I feel like i'm at the point where all the CDs I want only show up for either really high buy it now prices on ebay (like 20-50+) dollars or competitive auctions. I believe the most I ever spent on a CD was 50 dollars for cianide - the dying truth first press. I have like 100 CDs but right now all the ones I don't have are expensive.

It depends what the CD is. I am tempted to buy Life is Pain's Bloody Melancholy album for $50 which would be on the top end of what I would spend on a CD (especially as it is only 25 minutes!)

Eh, it really depends on the money I'm holding at the moment. I wouldn't mind buying a great record for 50 Euros if there's no other way of obtaining it.

Generally depends on how badly I want something, how long I've been looking for it, and whether or not I just got a huge cash infusion (tax return season, Christmas, etc.)

Last year, after years of searching, I finally came across a copy of Nightingale - Nightfall Overture that I actually bit the bullet and paid something like eighty dollars for, which I would normally consider an absolute no-no, but I figured I'd never get another chance to own the physical copy. (and then it turned out to be a false positive and the seller didn't actually have it, but yes, I did get the money back.)

But under ordinary circumstances, it's different. HMV regularly sells unlimited CDs for twenty bucks a pop, which steers me away from impulse buying when I know for a fact that I can find them cheaper elsewhere.

The most I've ever spent was $200, for a rarity that I really wanted. I'll likely never do that again, though I do have one want (non-metal) that if I ever find a copy of it, I'll pay almost any amount. But the used market for that particular item isn't likely to demand as high prices as the metal one does... probably.

Apart from that exception, I'm going to try to never again spend more than maybe $50 on a single CD. I have most of the stuff I want that is out of print, and the reissue trend is still going strong enough that I imagine the few things I don't have will get reissued eventually.

Probably no more than 60 now depending on the album, more than that would be just wasting cash for something I could just download instead of filling some moron's wallet for kvlt points.

Never more than $30, and that almost never happens. If a CD is going for insane prices, I'll either wait for it to get reissued, or if that has no chance of happening, bootlegged.

I sold all of my metal CD's since I had most on digital or vinyl and the most money I got for a single disc was $90 for an original, no barcode copy of Mayem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. So anything more than that amount, unless it's something like Burzum - "Aske" with the lighter, is excessive. I'd spend up to a couple hundred bucks on a rare vinyl, but never a CD.

I try not to pay more than 10 Euros for any album because apparently I'm cheap as hell. The most I've ever spent on a CD is 20 bucks.

£20, and even that's pushing it (a more conservative estimate is probably around £15).

OP, you say you're running out of in-print CDs to buy and yet you've just got 100 CDs?

$150 for a first press of Purtenance "Member Of Immortal Damnation". I know, I know its been reissued later but to me there's no substitute for owning a real piece of metal history and finest DM album of once awesome scene from Finland. No regrets here.

But its all really depends on an album. Some of them that I worship more often than not I'll seek for an original press. But more than $200 prolly would be pushing it.

Most I've paid for a single CD was AUD $40 or so for those mini-digipak versions of the Burzum albums. Wouldn't recommend them - the edges started to damage after just a couple of times taken out of the rack.

I think the most I ever spent on a cd was around 90 dollars for a Current 93 suscriber copy of Black Ships Ate the Sky. That was in part because World Serpent had dissolved and the post about the upcoming release by David Tibet seemed to give me the impression that he had no actual money available to release any more music. Turns out it was not quite that way (Current 93 had all the money the needed) and the music on the album is not entirely worth the price to me in the end :(

There are SOME cds I obtained for little, but I would have been willing to pay a hell of a lot more. Madoror's "Ars Magika" I paid $25 but would have gladly paid $250. It is simply the most perfect black metal album ever made.

I threw $30 via ebay at Lunar Aurora's "Elixir of Sorrow," though I later found out some company had reprinted it for quite a bit cheaper. Also bought the original version of Ars Moriendi by the same band via ebay for around $20.

I don't have many qualms about spending rather high amounts on CDs - the most I've spent on any one album is $55. I think I'd be willing to go up to about $100 for something that means a lot to me, like the full-length albums of Wormphlegm and Dripping.

$20. I rarely spend that much, unless it's one of those CD's that comes with live recordings or extra music.

I know, I'm cheap :P I just don't have the kind of money to justify a $50+ CD right now. Perhaps one day.

I got that Dripping cd for my boyfriend for a cool 8 dollars XP He adored that album and he was very happy about it.

If I had the money, I wouldn't mind spending enormous amount for a cd I really want, money is not really important to me.

I mean I've spent over $40 for an album on vinyl a few times, but for a CD I'm not so sure I'd do that. It would have to be some really special limited addition or really, really rare for me to spend an upwards of $40 on. I usually won't spend more than $25 on a CD unless I have a really good reason to.

Generally, 50$ for a single one, though I can make exceptions. Since I have to import a lot of stuff that isn't avaliable here, I usually spend a bit more than usual on each cd. I don't buy that many cds though.

Unless it's an import (talking about stuff from Japan mainly since those prices are outrageous), I don't think anything beyond $35 for a single CD is worth it.

I spent $75 on a Sonata Arctica Unopened single (misprint with the slow tempo), and then around $50 for the Live at Provinssirock Festival.
Granted, I'm collecting their material, so that's the absolute MOST I'd ever spend.

It depends on the CD. I factor in how much I want it, how rare it is, and if I think I'll have another opportunity to purchase it cheaper at a later date. I have no problem dropping a decent amount of cash on something really rare that I want, but I try to pay reasonable prices as often as I can.

you got that for $50?! whoah, i almost got a signed original copy of a descent into hell for $100 [i think?] but the seller changed his mind after i paid for it and refunded me.
100 cds is bugger all, i just topped the 1125 mark a couple of weeks ago and still have untold numbers to acquire, my collection is still relatively small compared to some of the dudes in here, one of you guys has a 10,000 cd collection from memory.

i'd say an average maximum for me is $50 for a wicked album that's out of print and/or hard to find like obscura or realm of chaos

About the same for me. The most expensive CD I ever got was a copy of Hirax's New Age Of Terror for about $22. Still one of my favorite thrash CDs of all time but I didn't spend it lightly.

I'm going to tell you a magical story. Once there was a little savings account that could. The end.

Also, about the cianide CD. You get lucky sometimes in an auction.

It depends, if its a new release I dont mind paying around $30 to $40 for an import. If its an old album and the cost is too high (more then about $25) then I usually just buy the mp3's on amazon. If its an old/rare release the I might spend around $50 to $70, but it has to be something I really want.

Keep in mind, the amount I'm willing to spend has to do with my financial situation. (There is a piece of duct tape covering a hole in my shoe right now.)

I feel like this has already been asked/discussed a whole lot here, but I like inserting my opinion everywhere I can, so...

I tend to hate buying new CD's from "commercial" music stores (chains like FYE and independent stores that only stock boring crap) because the cost seems highly inflated in a lot of stores. Blame whatever you want to blame. I am not interested in discussing why, I just know they seem to cost way too much new... I will pay/order new CD's for around 15-18 bucks if I can afford them and desire them badly enough.

$20 is really pushing it for me, and it's kind of my limit.

It's the same with used CD's. I fucking hate paying a lot of money for used stuff, even if I really want it.
I'd rather wait for a deal than pay bullshit money for something I don't actually "need".

I try to find the cheapest prices possible on used stuff and it's extremely rare that I will even bother with prices that go far beyond the $15-$20 range.

So $20 is basically my limit for any CD, old or new. or record, for that matter. I have been spoiled on scoring rare stuff for dirt cheap at my local shop, I suppose... Not that I haven't always been a cheapskate.

Most I've spent on a cd is $40... don't have many CD's left now tho... maybe 20... had over 600 but sold them all as I don't play CD's anymore... only listen to my iPod and the occasional vinyl... spent over $200 on a vinyl before tho so I can understand someone paying an excessive amount for a CD if that's what you collect...

The most I spent was like 20. I normally buy CDs around $10-15. Though $15 is pushing it.

Why?

A prostitute wouldn't even do that for $12, and you only get to use them once unless you keep paying. :|
