Forgot how cool Sonne Adam was. It seems like really conventional stuff from far away but the songwriting is full of all sorts of unorthodox little twists and turns. Maybe I just don't listen to enough doomy DM, but this stuff sounds very fresh to me.

Sonne Adam are fucking incredibly good. The two 7" eps are great as well, especially Armed With Hammers.

Really...? Tried to give Transformation another listen the other day and couldn't even sit through the whole thing. They've got some interesting aspects to their sound, but overall I don't find it very convincing somehow. I'd be curious to see what their next album's like, though.

Yep, I didn't find their sound very convincing, and their production works against them. But like you said, I'm interested to see where they go next, as it WAS just their first album.

I've heard that the EPs are better than Transformation, but only given the full length a go myself. Not bad at all, but it isn't a top level release to me.

Each to their own, but I see it as a top level album (Transformation...), their sound is somewhat unique and has a twisted, dark magic to it which holds my attention. I really like the way they construct their songs. The Armed With Hammers ep is some great stuff as is the latest. But if you no like it, then you no like it eh?

So I was checking the websites of local venues to see if any shows that I cared about were coming up. Apparently Agalloch was here a couple of hours ago. Fuck.

I don't know why, but my interest in power metal has grown exponentially over the past few days. I've been listening to Iced Earth, Gamma Ray, Mystic Prophecy, Imagika, etc. non stop.

Am I turning into a nerd?

Hmm.... I gave Transformation a try because it seemed to be an awesome new putrid slab of doomy death metal, boy was I wrong. The production absolutely slaughters all credibility and power, and that's a shame because the actual songwriting is quite good.

The production is one of the best things about it. It actually sets them apart from the legions of other retro DM bands and gives them their own identity. Nice atmospheric sort of sound.

I found the production to be a deal breaker also, don't get me wrong 90% of the scene is way too muddy and indescript, but Sonne's melodeath guitar tone is disgustingly ill fitting for a doomy death metal band. There are many better examples of how to do a modernised and easy to distinguish version of the old OSDM sound.

I thought it was really dry and flat. You know, the stereotypical "not dirty enough" opinion. Then again I didn't like the songs too much in the first place; the production is more of a nitpick than anything.

Anyways, I'm currently hooked to Liber II. It's got the beefy production of the 777 trilogy (the best that BAN has ever had so far), the general vibe of Sects and the harshness of TWTTG. The silences between sections don't even really bother me anymore. Definitely going into my top 10 this year (standing at #5 right now).

Well lord_ghenghis, I think you and I have exactly opposite taste in DM anyway...me, I'd put Sonne up there with the top of the crop. It's funny exactly how different our tastes are under the same genre head, even.

Seconding/thirding the dislike of Sonne Adam's dry production; that's part of what kills it a little for me. I feel the various instruments sound much too separated in the mix, as well, and if anything the sound is kind of anti-atmospheric. It causes what could be a very creepy, ritualistic affair to fall somewhat into the mundane. I do appreciate the fact that their sound is pretty recognizable and stands out as something genuinely different, that's neat, but even apart from the production issues I find their songs to be rather weak in the riff department and they tend to lack a certain momentum. Compositionally things sound a bit halting a lot of the time and the tracks never seem to build into anything as particularly grand as the presentation of the album would seem to promise.

Productions are rarely a deal breaker for me, it needs to be very atrocious that it's burying the songwriting qualities and that's not the case with Sonne Adam in my opinion, it's dark, spooky and awesome. Can't wait for their 2nd album.

Sonne Adam's production is awesome. It makes the instrumentation sound like an engine made of bones and sinews, although the off-kilter songwriting admittedly helps when it comes to convey such a feeling.

For some reason I'll never understand, this song frequently gets stuck in my head. I haven't listened to this album in full in probably two years, but this pre chorus always manages to sneak it's way into my brain when there's no other song playing. I love dorky revivalist metal I guess.

I don't think I'd ever watched the video before that post, holy crap that was stupid. I guess I like it when bands don't take themselves too seriously, but only when I can't see them

I quite enjoy a bit of White Wizzard every now and again - I still need to listen to their second album properly though. I find them frustrating though, not musically, they often sound good, but there's just... something which gets to me, probably how comically unstable their lineup is.

Their second album is leagues better than their first. The promo song they just released with their new members is shite though :(

Just listened the promo - it's not too bad, but it's got far, far too much lead-guitar/general melodic wankery - White Wizzard do tend to neglect the humble riff, I feel.

Keep in the mind that the song is just a demo. The lead work is laid on a little thicker this time around, but I think that's a counteraction to the very basic solos on Flying Tigers, most if not all were performed by Jon Leon who recorded them out of sheer necessity. He's still the primary songwriter, but is probably more than a little content to the new guys show off what they can do for right now.

I know nothing about this band, I was just busting your balls. I'm not 'butthurt' little friend. Expect sarcasm when you post something as useless as "X band suckkss"

Now you can all gang up on me for picking on Empyreal.

 I don't really think that's gonna happen.

I heard the song "Over the Top" ONE time over two years ago and I still remember it perfectly. It's almost eerily memorable. I have no interest in that band, though.

I agree with Empyreal though. (For once?) White Wizzard are quite generic and lame.
