I was going to post this in the musicians' forum but I figured non-musicians can still discuss.

What would be the ideal sound for a band you're in? And what would you play? For me it'd be these two sounds

1. Old-school occult death metal. Something along the lines of Morbid Angel, Incantation, Disma, Disembowelment, Autopsy, and Leprosy-era Death. Music that reeks of coffins, graveyards, rotting corpses, and Lovecraftian muck. Writing true death metal riffs seems like a challenge (for me at least) to make sound authentic but when I do, it comes out awesome. I think I'd have a few cool tricks up my sleeve that would be interesting for the genre.

2. Hardcore punk, black metal, and heavy metal hybrid. This band I would play drums, this is just something I can do to play hard and fast, yet fun and easy drum parts. It'd be the perfect medium between catchy and ballsy to excite a live crowd and play some fun shows. We'd be influenced by the more punk side of black metal like Carpathian Forest and later Darkthrone as well as bands like Motorhead and Venom. But we'd also have the melodic hardcore and tension build/release sensibilities of bands like Kvelertak and Trap Them as with a touch of sludge like old Mastodon and Baroness.

1. Doom metal - I would either sing or sing and play guitar. Easy to play, heavy, goes well with being stoned, and I enjoy singing in this style

2. Some multi-instrument jam band - I love just jamming; would love to be in a band that isn't afraid to bring all sorts of weird and random instruments into the fold. All my buddies are very orthodox though, so it wouldn't happen with my current group of music-friends. You ever see the 1970ish video for 'In the Summertime' by Mungo Jerry? That kind of thing.

3. Atmospheric black metal - Love the sound, but am the only one I know who likes this shit, so I do it by myself. Would be awesome to have two parts playing live and not have to play over myself.

1. Black Metal/Atmospheric/Post-Black - I've already considered starting up a solo project, but time and money are both issues that have delayed my foray into BM. I'm just entranced by the flexibility this genre offers with so many bands implementing different elements to its sound while still retaining the core atmosphere of the genre.

2. Thrash/Blackened Thrash - I could just see this being particularly fun to be in, I just don't have any friends who share similar enough musical tastes to form a band around this musical style (they are all into this Post-Hardcore garbage).

1- Progressive Death metal strongly influenced by bands suchs as Opeth, Edge of Sanity, Katatonia, Phantasmagory,Rotting Christ (melodic material) and stuff like that. Powerful music but with a gloomy side. Lots of tempo changes and jazz influences as well. Maybe some Pain of Salvation reminiscence (the more sad, slow songs).

2-Im currently looking for people to play some kind of deathish progressive sludge/stoner rock. Weird mix. Something between Baroness, Kylesa, Kyuss, Down, Rush, Eyehategod, Orange Globin, Pain of Salvation, Mastodon, Led Zeppelin with both harsh and clean vocals. Variety of textures and rythms but with a strong and dirty sludge influence keeping all together.

3- Thrash metal (actually im working with some friends at a project like this) with Voivod,DBC,Nocturnus,Vektor and sci fi shit influences. Not so proggy not so generic . In your face sci fi thrash with a good amount of disonant chords and tempo changes.

Tbh I'd feel comfortable playing doom, black, dark, OSDM/death, thrash, sludge, ambient/black, death/doom, funeral doom, hardcore punk, melodic DEATH, speed and prog. I can bs trad, power and folk but I can't say I could come up with good riffs for those genres as well as the rest, even though I prefer those genres to some of the ones I can play. I currently play in a death/doom band.

I dont actually play an instrument, so if I was in a band I would be doing, vocals, lyrics and album art. It would probably wind up sounding along the lines of: Experimental Noise/Black/Death/Doom. Or more like power metal with harsh vocals kind of like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQPqbjcpI18

I think it would be cool to do some sort of concept album but because I would rather draw then practice music it probably would never happen unless I found a musician with similar taste and ideas I could collaborate with. My brother is a musician but do to are radically different ideas about music (He hates metal) and the fact we dont really get along anymore he refuses to collaborate on anything with me.

I can't play anything, but for a long time I've wanted to start a band that mixes old school, traditional (that is, structured) Grindcore (as opposed to completely chaotic Noisecore) with harsh, spastic cut-up noise.

I can make noise. :)

...but I also think it has the potential to sound really cool. I also realize it has even greater potential to sound like boring shit. It's still something I'd like to try.

When I was in highschool, I used to want to start a band where I "played the radio". It seemed too far-fetched to try back then though. I really can't play a damn thing, and it isn't for lack of effort, but I still think I could make a decent "background noise/noise interludes/weird textures guy" for a more traditional band... without being totally useless.

If not Grindcore, then Sludge or something like that.

...

Or just a pisstake "Indie" band where we all dress like tools and make music on Smartphones...... That could be fun/obnoxious too...

I've had an idea in my head for a band called Hellcharge for some time now. It will obviously be Discharge/ Hellhammer worship.

1. Brutal/Technical Death Metal- Part Krisiun, part Cannibal Corpse, that is all. . . (I already tried that once but it failed because I hadn't acquired the proper equipment.)

2. Black/Death Metal- Basically Belphegor-style blackened death metal with lyrics about Hindu philosophy, satanism and anti-christian themes. The Hindu thing seems lame but I think I could pull it off pretty well, especially since I'm studying it right now.

3. Progressive extreme metal- Basically Enslaved with more of a death metal twist, possibly Ne Obliviscaris influenced.

I'd like to make some kind of power/speed metal band that does concept albums about awesome video games and stuff....like Baldurs Gate, Planescape Torment(might be a better subject for a DM band) and the Ultima series.

I can't play or sing for shit, but if I could I would play some sort of black metal that is part Burzum's Filosofem and part Ildjarn.

Other options would be atmospheric, trancelike death metal much like Darkthrone's Soulside Journey and Gorguts Obscura(without all the weird shit), or electronic music like, I dunno, a harsher Burial with Klaus Schulze elements.

I'd also like to try some melodic but raw and intense as hell hardcore, or a My Bloody Valentine clone, just for the hell of it.

Upbeatish traditional doom metal, like Witchfinder General or some of Reverend Bizarre's stuff. I would sing or play guitar. I can't do either of those very well, but I think I could pull off that style of music adequately.

Same here! I am working on a melodic black metal project that has rock, power metal, and goth influenes! The lyrics help set for black metal ballads! With both raspy delivery and clean singing involved!

1. im working on an experimental viking doom sludge sort of thing, its been hard trying to decide on genres, because i play alot of different kind of stuff, so i look at boris for inspiration and have decided to combined my styles into one. I guess my ideal band then would be a blackened doom style band.

2. I would enjoy a noise grind project, something along the lines of melt banana, but i dont have much experience in that playing style.

3. A neo folk project would be enjoyable aswell, with what im doing with my viking doom stuff, alot of my riff's sound good played in a more folk style.

1) Technical death/thrash. I love technical thrash stuff like Coroner and Atheist, and I think mixing in some early death metal riffs would be a perfect blend of intensity and musicianship.I have yet to play in a band where I really challenge myself and my musical abilities.

2) Bass-only powerviolence/power electronics/noise. Very similar to Man is the Bastard/Bastard Noise. A lot of bands can capture the sound of Man is the Bastard (2 bass guitars, one low, one distorted/high) but don't have the riffs of MiTB/BN. I love playing bass and I want to play bass more and noise/power electronics is something I've been getting heavily into that stuff lately so combining the two would be rad for me.

1) Heavy Metal.- In my Folk band, i play more the style of Thrash Metal, fast and heavy riffs, but i want to do something like Black Sabbath, that kind of Doom/Heavy riffs, extremely catchy, loud and heavy. I really love that sound and i want to put that in the sound of my band. :)
2) Neoclassical.- My favorite style of guitar, i really want to play that to put the style in almost all my songs, hehe, because is something really amazing for me.
3) Pop Rock.- :-D Yeah well, it's not Metal, this is something i'm working on my own project, not a band really, but it isn't the stupid sound of these modern Pop Rock bands (if they deserved the name, they sound totally like Pop) but the sound of 80's rock bands, like The Cars, Tears For Fears, Hall & Oates, Aldo Nova, Michael Bolton, Rod Stewart, Air Supply, i'm focused more in the sound of these bands than in it's lyrics (if so (80% of my songs will be about love) and i'm making my own songs, playing the guitar, the bass, the drums and the vocals all for myself, it's a very difficult task. And why not? Some hints of some Rock & Roll riffs here and there.

If I were to start a band, I would play one of the following:

1. Power Metal: I would play the keyboard and do backing vocals
2. Thrash Metal: I would probably sing (if I can) and I was thinking about learning how to play bass so I might stick to that
3. Heavy Metal/Hard Rock (even though I don't listen to that much Hard Rock): I would play the keyboard and probably sing.

phew, there would be some possibilities if I had the opportunity to start a band.

I would either start:

- a Street Rock/Oi-Punk kind of band. Nothing complicated, just infectious, catchy songs to shout along and raise some hell. Something along the lines of Discipline (NL), Dropkick Murphys etc. Many gang-shouts, you know that stuff ;)

or

- uprising (no ballads!) and again catchy-as-hell AOR in the vein of Stan Bush (Dare, The Touch) with lots of synth layers and biiiig chrouses. That however would mean I first would have to learn how to actually sing :p

or

- stomping BM with lots of martial influences. Combining BM with marching drums, horns and trumpets would be a fine thing and exactly my cup of tea. No noisy, industrial stuff but proud sounding and hymnic.

Power/Symphonic/Melodeth band, my brother's already said he'd like to do a melodeth band, but he likes power metal too, so it might work out. I'd be on bass/vox/programming till we get a drummer, and he'd be on guitar/keyboards (and maybe additional vocals, since he can sing and do thrash vocals really well).

I'd be pretty happy to be in a heavy rock band that experiments with weird sounds too.

Heck, I'd be happy to join any band, if I didn't live in a town full of indie musicians.

Damn, I have plenty of ideas and songs written for many styles, but I haven't found the people to make it real. I play guitar, bass, some keys and drums (but I don't have a kit anymore), but I can't sing even to save my own life.

Some of the things I've written and/or have all the intention to develop somewhere in time:

1-Neofolk. I have like a full length written which should be released under the Forestfather name. I need to find some time, a pianist and someone to play cello/violin/flute.

2-Progressive 'jazzy' and/or death metal alas Cynic, Augury, Atheretic, Spiral Architect, Aghora, Death (ITP), Obscura, etc. I think I'm a good bass player and I play exclusively fretless, so I would kill for recording an album of this kind of stuff where the bass has a lot of room to shine and make all kind of wicked things.

3-Avantgarde stuff like Ved Buens Ende, Virus, Code and Arcturus. Again, I could play most of instruments but I guess I'll need a dedicated drummer, a good keyboardist and a versatile vocalist (I think I know someone who can and would like to sing over that material).

4-'Hellenic' black metal, like Varathron, Rotting Christ, Necromantia, Deviser, Kawir, etc. I love this style of black metal! I would probably add some more early Samael influence on it.

Death/doom metal, influenced by Rippikoulu, and with elements from Incantation, Disma, etc. to Disembowelment, Obituary, etc. I will be doing vocals, but also will be doing most of the songwriting and lyrics.

I already have two solo projects (one doesn't have anything finished yet), and I've been in the process of forming some kind of Black Metal based band with a friend for a while...but here are some "ideal band" choices (I've also got ideas for other solo projects too).

1) Black/Sludge (with outside influences from Industrial, Noise Rock, Post-Punk, elsewhere)
This is probably the direction I'm gonna steer the band me and my friend end up creating (I'll be on guitars). Something like Tukaaria, Tombs, Wolvhammer, Atriarch, Neurosis, mashed together, with plenty of non-Metal influences.

2) Psychedelic Sludge/Drone/Stoner-Doom
I just wanna do something in that whole (early) Electric Wizard vein- but never clone them. Here I could combine a number of my major Doom loves- from Sleep to Rwake, Burning Witch to...Witch- into one lysergic, hellish monster. Plus it'd be music I could still play find no matter how stoned (hard to play tremolo BM riffs baked for me haha), and that's a definite plus.

3) (dark) Post-Rock/Drone/Sludge (instrumental?)
GY!BE filtered through Neurosis, little or no vocals. Maybe I should just do this as another solo-project some time...

4) "Blackgaze" + Sonic Youth guitars
Got some stuff written that would work for this already- I've had this idea going around my head for a while now. Kinda hard to describe what I've envisioned here...

5) Post-Punk/old school Goth Rock ala Bauhaus (at their darkest)
Just love this kind of stuff so much, and like using its influence in Metal, so why not play it on its own eventually? That guitar style is just one of the best ever.

6) Raw Black Metal/Noise/Crust/Hardcore Punk
It would be really fun to play something in the vein of Bone Awl, Martyrdod, Iskra, Akitsa, etc. This is the other possibility I've been thinking of for the band I'm in the midst of forming.

My dream band would be just like Impaled Nazarene.

In all seriousness, I'd love to write music like Anata and Intestine Baalism, bastardised by Finnish black metal à la Behexen and Horna, with appropriately sloppy performances and completely unpolished sound. I don't have the talent for the songwriting, though.

I had always wanted to start a "blues metal" band but I know Psychic Faith is about to get to that point with the newer songs I've been writing. Other than that, a few of my dream projects have been a dark power metal project in the vein of just about everything Roy Z has ever produced (Bruce Dickinson, Blaze Bayley, modern Helloween, etc.) and a more laid back project similar to Alice In Chains' Jar Of Flies EP or Anathema's Judgement. I've also thought about doing vocals for a death metal project but I don't think I've mastered the technique properly enough to do anything more than a song here and there.

1. Fantasy black metal. Something of a combination of summoning, and nattestid era taake. This would be a solo project.

2. Brutal death metal. something groovy like dying fetus or vomit remnants. Lots of groove and slams.

3. old school death metal. Really thrashy like early death, morbid angel.

My band would be kind of a combination of Opeth, Obscura, and Disarmonia Mundi. Modern progressive death metal you could say. I would want to do everything, have complete control, but most likely play guitar and sing alive. Unfortunately, I can't do any of that...

I have just one more and then I'll let you guys play.

The Bruise Brothers would make an excellent Powerviolence band name.

1. Technical/brutal death metal- Ala Nile, but no Egyptian influences. Brutal, amazing music that's just a whirlwind of power. Think Fleshgod Apocalypse

2. Nu-metal ish death metal- Bare with me here. Think Slipknot's Iowa album. It would be fun to sing I think, downtune the guitars and just make some simple caveman music. This would be a great project with friends in a garage to just improvise a whole album-worth of music. The end result would be similar to Jungle Rot, but not quite exclusive death metal

Singing in something gothic/doom, thoroughly enjoy listening to and singing in a deep and saddening manner. *Tear

When it comes to playing and writing music I'm completely useless, but I have had some ideas for the kinds of bands I'd like to play in if I had the talent.

1. A black/death/thrash metal band influenced by Absu, early Celtic Frost/Hellhammer and Australia's "War Metal" sound (just a little bit more technical)
2. A black/heavy/folk metal band combining black/heavy metal with Australian bushdance music. Think Venom/Mercyful Fate meets The Bushwackers.
3. A covers band called "Covered in Blood" that would do epic heavy/thrash metal covers of well known rock songs.
4. A raw anti NS black metal band with a sense of humour. Song titles would include "I went back in time and fellated Hitler", "Mainlining Aryan semen", "Circumcised penises frighten me" and "Circle jerk of the tyrants".

I always think I'd love to do vocals in some sort of death n' roll band with a hell of a lot of Venom influence. I'd just love to let loose on stage in that kind of environment. That, and my lyrics would probably suit that style of music the best.

Doing the vocals in a power metal band sounds like a lot of fun, and it's also challenging. I can sing, and I'm pretty versatile (that is: I can pull off softer stuff imitating Kakko and more harsher stuff a la Defeis) and I enjoy singing and writing lyrics, I have trouble with the volume of the falsetto, though, got to work (a lot, haha) in the projection of my voice I guess.
Other than that, I would love to do black metal, like a mix of Taake and At The Heart Of Winter-Immortal (not very hard, I don't really know a thing of music theory, but I reckon that they are very similar, being from the '90 and from Norway and all) but can't do black metal vocals for shit (weeeeell, a danifilth-esque rasp, not very kvlt) but maybe with practice I could give them a shot.

I like martial stuff too, and mixing that with a Manowar sound to achieve new heights of sounding even more triumphant and over the top would be awesome for me.

I use to be in a techy- grind/experimental band a few years ago but that fell through, so something almost a step up from that as in this time having challenging arrangments but not the point of it not being fun to play would be ideal.. Im really huge into music like Sleep Terror, drumming wise, i can't pull off the guitar but drums are an option, but with almost a groovy Dying Fetus/ Abysmal Torment sort of feel, but with more dynamic vocals. I've always wanted to start something like that but i can never find a guitar player that is either good enough or has the time to commit to something like that. Fuckin' guitar players!

I didn't really think so personally. Those titles lack the cleverness of subtlty (it seems to always be the case for everyone trying to ape later-day Anal Cunt's approach to lyrics/titles, which I actually find fairly smart, believe it or not. Imitators not so much), and that just makes them seem dumb. It's just a personal turn-off, and I tend to think that's a bad approach for trying to make a joke of something besides yourself. Especially something that deserves ridicule.

Granted, those suggested titles are certainly not at Psychostickian levels of painful, cringe-inducing inanity (who could possibly ever be lamer than those retarded frat boys?), but the titles alone still make me go :ugh:

BTW, I love all makes and models of the human penis. I am not sympathetic to NS types either. I don't want my opinions to misconstrued this way, I am simply giving my honest opinion about it.

Call it "constructive criticism" if that makes me seem like less of a jerk.

Something similar to Witchcraft and Black Sabbath. Tone down the distortion a bit from Sabbath but keep the doomy riffs, with up beat melodies and vocals similar to Witchcraft. Throw in some trippy psychedelic keyboards from the '60s and some awesome bluesy jamming throughout each song. Heavy, audible bass and sloppyish drums.

Somebody start a band with me!
