Suspiria doesn't totally work for me, neither does Inferno, but I really appreciate the eerie atmosphere and excellent lighting - enough to say that I do enjoy them both. The Beyond however, is a classic, bona fide. So is every other Fulci movie I've seen.

Just watched Silent House from this year. Crap. Long, meandering and mostly wasted potential of what coulda been a good story.

I watched Antichrist and Candyman with two female friends last night. LOL to Antichrist, Jesus, gotta love insanity. Candyman was more fun. Thinking of watching Hellraiser next, need to see more Clive Barker. I enjoyed reading his Imajica books. I should also show them Texas Chainsaw if they haven't seen it, classic. And maybe High Tension/Session 9.

Oooo I love Session 9! One of the best psychological horror movies from the past decade. If you like Session 9, you should check out the movie Absentia. It just recently came out, I believe it's available on Netflix. It's another great psychological horror that doesn't need blood or gore. Kind of a slow burn, but definitely worth it if you like the kind of horror that makes you think and actually use your brain instead of a bunch of blood being thrown on the screen.

Anyway, I'm a huge horror genre fan, I wish it wouldn't have taken me so long to venture into the Tavern and find this thread. I'm not huge on the 80s slasher flicks that so many are posting in this thread, I mean, they're good movies for what they are, just not my personal favorite.

my absolute favorite horror's are the obvious classics:
The Shining (1980) - the perfect horror movie? i think so
Alien (1979) - more sci-fi than horror but whatever, it's probably my favorite movie of all time.
The Thing (1982) - never has a movie given me the overall claustrophobic feeling of isolation like this one. love the atmosphere. oh, and of course the gore and the graphics are still awesome to this day!

my favorite more modern horror movies:
Session 9 - already talked about it above. one of the best psychological horror films i've seen
Absentia - already talked about it also. in the same vein of Session 9 as far as psychological horror that's kind of a slow burn
The Mist - kinda surprised I didn't see this one mentioned yet... instead of the movie focusing on the terror of the actual "mist", the real terror is the people and what happens inside the grocery store they are all locked in. This is a must watch.
Martyrs - you'll either love it or hate it. i personally loved it. some may write it off as torture porn, but it's so much more than that if you can stomach the violence
High Tension - say what you want about the ending, I thought it was fine, even if it doesn't really make much sense when you rewatch it lol. I can still remember the first time I saw this movie, it was the movie that really got me going into the horror genre so i'll always love it
[REC] - never never never never watch Quarantine, the American remake of REC. this movie, the original, puts most of all "found footage" films to shame.
Antichrist - well, I liked it. most won't. a beautifully shot and directed film for such a dark movie
A Tale of Two Sisters - good atmosphere. very creepy movie with a wonderful twist
Grave Encounters - i know i know, it's one of those "found footage" films and I know I just said [REC] puts most of them to shame, but this one is actually pretty good. i'm a horror veteran and it takes quite a bit to creep me out, but this one did
House of the Devil - awesome 80s throwback. kind of a slow burn also, but definitely worth it
A l'interieur (Inside) - french horror. very very gory. very very good lol.

not necessarily my favorite, but some enjoyable ones that have recently come out within the past couple years:
Dream Home(the 2010 foreign film, not the crappy Dream House with Daniel Craig), The Theatre Bizarre, Stake Land, Kill List, Cold Sweat, The Shrine, YellowBrickRoad, Amer, Kidnapped, Dread, The Signal

I guess I should stop now lol.

Anyway, I know most of the talk in this thread is about the older horror flicks but I figured this would be the best place to talk about modern horrors as well.

Cool, I'll definately watch it soon. I was wondering what movies were scariest in peoples opinions, as I've seen all the basic ones, but the last time I was scared by one was when I saw Halloween when I was 8.

Nice list, nosferatu, all good shit, except Martyrs which I find an absolute piece of dog shit. I actually coincidentally just found Absentia on Netflix and am about to check it out - hope it's as good as you say!

Been watching some more horror movies in the last few days. Here are my impressions.

Alucarda - Fantastic! After only one viewing, I think this is already one of my favorite horror movies ever. There's something so haunting about this movie; it's pure, visual poetry - and evil as fuck. The two leading actresses are beautiful, and you see a lot of them, if you know what I mean. This is also one of the few Mexican movies I've ever seen. There must be something down there that inspires such twisted art. I already knew that they've produced some outstanding death metal, and now I see that their contributions to film must be taken seriously too. This may come off as bit hyperbolic, but damn, I'm still excited by this!

The Omen - D'oh! I expected to like this a lot better than I did. Compared to The Exorcist and Rosemary's Baby, this just seemed rather overwrought. A lot of it's the music. It builds up to nothing, because right from the start, it's blaring at you, screaming, 'This is scary!' I'm not convinced. Now, this is a decent movie, and worth watching, but very overrated, in my opinion.

Nosferatu - This is the second time I've seen this movie, and my opinion of it has risen considerably. Max Schreck's portrayal of the vampire is, visually, by far the creepiest I've ever seen. Everyone's seen the famous shots from this, so you know what I'm talking about. It's also quite artful in its building of suspense. By the time the climax arrived, I was on the edge of my seat. I tend to get a little impatient during silent movies, so this is high praise from me. A true classic.

The Human Centipede - Um. Torture porn is not my thing, but this wasn't too bad. The actor playing the doctor was perfect for the part; he seemed truly cold and cruel. Once the 'centipede' is 'made', prepare to settle in for a lot of the same thing, because frankly, there aren't many places you can go with this. Nevertheless, the climax was pretty good, and probably as good as it could possibly have been. The ending is appropriately bleak. If you're curious about this movie, go ahead and watch it, but don't expect to be blown away.

The Human Centipede 2 - Fucking boring. They spent the whole movie trying to be so shocking and gruesome that it just comes across as tired. The main character is well-played, in the sense that he's supposed to be slimy and vile, and the actor portrays him as exactly that. That's about the most praise I can muster for this pointless affair. Avoid.

Edit: Derp. I just remembered this thread is about favorite horror movies, not just random horror movies and what you thought of them. Also two of my movies are too recent to fit in the time frame requested. I'll leave my post as is for now, but if asked, I'll delete the gratuitous stuff. Sorry about that.
