I have found myself listening to a lot (I mean A LOT) of hip-hop lately, and couldnt place my finger on why. Metal was my first musical love, and I still love it now. I still research new bands, read reviews, go to shows, etc. but I rarely just sit down and listen to it anymore, unless Im with people with metal listening inclinations. And now I think I have come to realize why. For the last few months I have been smoking marijuana much more frequently than ever, and frankly, I just don't want to listen to metal while I'm high (unless it happens to be stoner/doom sort of stuff). Tonight I sit here sober as can be, and find myself just wanting to listen to metal all of a sudden.

I suppose figuring this out is sort of nice, but I do find it a bit odd. Does anyone else find themselves feeling similarly to this?

(Note, this is not a discussion for or against drugs, this is about listening habits, Im not looking to argue with anyone.)

Nope. Maybe because I don't smoke marijuana? Am I uncool for this? :(

I don't do any drugs but have noticed when I drink I like to listen to Khanate a lot more than I do when sober (I listen to it a fair bit when sober) also I tend to listen to a lot of goth music when drunk like Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Cure etc.

I havent really tried it out when I drink, since when Im drinking Im usually with other people and cant choose the music. But I have been told grind is pretty choice for being drunk.

I tend to listen to really simple, dumb genres that I dismiss when sober when drunk. For example, I absolutely despise brostep, crossover thrash and punky thrash metal when sober, but when I'm drunk I find it really to be really simple, dumb fun.

You're uncool for plenty of other reasons.

There's some music that's really fun when you're stoned, be it metal or other stuff.
Like this, fucking trippy

I listen to what I feel like listening to and state of inebriation or sobriety doesn't really factor in much. Metal is my first love, but not my only one, and these days I sometimes go a week or two without really listening to much metal at all merely because I feel burnt out on it. Just the way it is, I guess.

I listen to metal when I'm sober. I listen to metal when I'm not sober. So, no. But if you like some rap, listen to it. What's your problem?

That I find it odd that my listening habits change so much due to if im sober or not (or what im on for that matter). It has nothing to do with the fact that I listen to hip-hop when im high, it could be any other genre. The point is that I generally dont have any inclination to listen to metal while high, even though I would consider metal to be my favorite genre.

Just the way you are, I guess. Listening habits go hand in hand with personality. So, pretty much an individual thing.

I have it the other way around. After I quit drinking I've started to like more intense, technical, chaotic music. So energy, and clear headedness has a lot to do with what you enjoy I guess.

Studies indicate that being stoned greatly increases someone's chances of listening to Kyuss.

I listen to a lot of technical death metal and progressive metal when I get stoned. Obscura's Cosmogenesis album is always in my CD player on a smoking night.

I can't smoke anymore because of my job, but when I did I was a classic Pink Floyd guy. I also LOVED watching Emperor's Live Inferno, so incredibly intense.
When I drink my taste is pretty much the same, I just make sure to play it louder :)

the few times i found myself drunk i felt like listening to old rock and roll, mainly stoner/sludge stuff like The Melvins,Fu Man Chu,Kyuss, etc i guess your state of hapiness (?) relax and tranquility makes you wanna listen something like rap or reggae.

I find REALLY strange the fact that you listen to metal while not drunk and hip hop while drunk. That's sort of bipolar.
Maybe you just need more musical variety in your life (drunk or not) and start listening what you REALLY want.

I find music I hate even more intolerable when stoned, and it makes metal sound even more awesome.
When I'm drunk, on the other hand, there's very little music I enjoy for some reason. I prefer socializing, maybe with some music I really REALLY love in the background.

I find that, especially at shows, it's easier to enjoy bad music while stoned or drunk, especially if it relies on B.D.H.s or formulaic songwriting. I guess it needs a certain level of mental clarity to recognize meaning in art or whatever. In contrast I experienced that listening to bad music while being stoned can actually make me really uncomfortable if I realize it's bad music.
Because of that I prefer to listen to music I'm already familiar with after smoking cannabis, but I rarely smoke which might be the reason why I get uncomfortable relatively easily. Apart from that it's pretty much the same array of bands I listen to when sober... except maybe nothing too complicated...

Everything sounds fantastic if I'm sufficiently drunk, but when drunk alone I find that I listen to more ambient, post-hardcore and depressive black metal than I usually do when sober.

True dat. Also Orange Goblin I find.

When I'm drunk I really want to listen to fast music, with really fast loud drums especially - Absu, Deathchain, Cryptopsy, Exhorder, Demolition Hammer, Vader etc. As someone else mentioned earlier, it has to be stuff I'm really familiar with too.

Have never had any change in my tastes from being drunk or sober. I'm rarely drunk but the only thing it had changed was probably the volume I was listening to it at. Louder obviously cause you need to feel your bones vibrate.

I tend to listen to what could be considered "drinking songs" when drunk - although the causal order of the two things is questionable.

I tend to listen a lot more to different types of Doom Metal (especially on the experimental side) offshoots, highly experimental Black Metal, and assorted non-Metal (usually something kind of unusual in some way) in general during periods where I'm smoking weed more heavily than usual (which is pretty much my usual music habits anyways, if only because I love my ganja). Bands like Neurosis, Rwake, Jesu, JK Flesh, Blut Aus Nord, Enslaved, Oranssi Pazuzu, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Pink Floyd...just all go perfectly with being stoned in different ways.

Im not sure what youre trying to say here. Of course I want to listen to metal. Why the hell would I listen to it if I didnt want to? And regarding the whole "musical variety" comment, I have plenty of that. It just happens that I listen to particular genres more often than not.

Also, I was talking about being stoned, not drunk, not that it changes much in this discussion.

For me, it was never about metal or types of metal, but speed of the music. I often listened to slower stuff on depressant drugs and faster stuff on stimulant drugs. I don't do drugs anymore and I barely drink, so it's not really an issue for me at the moment.

I dont understand whats the point here. Of course your musical hunger changes when your state of mind changes. Sometimes i listen my own farts when drunk, sober, high or not. Problem?

I listen to Hip-Hop a lot more when high as well, but the same goes for ambient, post-rock, neo-folk and atmospheric/slower/trippy metal(Doom(all round), prog, death/doom, ambient black, dark metal, post-metal). Then when I've been drinking thrash, death, black, power, folk and stoner(funnily enough) become more enjoyable. It's all about your attention span I suppose, I have way more attention when high as opposed to when I'm drunk

Don't do drugs, but when drinking nothing beats old school Amorphis, or Emperor, also Ulver's Perdition City.

My tastes wouldn't change just because I was intoxicated. If I am wasted and I hear something that I would hate when sober I hate it much more when I am drunk/high.
