Been on the archives for awhile now, it's literally been my homepage since the day a college DJ for the local metal radio show showed it to me one night when my buddy and I were hanging out at the studio. Before that I got all my info from metal-observer, anus.com, cdnow.com (haaaaaaaa) bnrmetal.com and satan stole my teddybear, but of course nothing beats Encyclopaedia Metallum!! I thought I was going to be the most "senior" user or whatever to post on this thread but looks like I got beat! :(

So if we can assume a steady addition of new bands, how long do you think it'd be until we reach 100,000? Maybe around three years? I remember an announcement was made when we reached 70k, but I don't remember how long ago that was off the top of my head.

Edit: It was in October of 2009.

Hell yeah. I get so much use out of this site it's unbelievable. I have a few metalhead friends who don't use this site, and it baffles me. It's easily the best metal resource ever created, given the huge catalog of bands on file, the typically insightful (and critical) reviews, information given about each band, and - not least - the V2 'Similar Artists' tab! If it were possible to wear out a link, I'd have done it with that tab. It's led me to so many great bands. As long as I have a web browser open, one tab will always read 'Encyclopaedia Metallum: The Metal Archives'. \m/

Been here for six years and the main page still isn't my home page. I ought to do that sometime, because this is the most important site next to google for me.

Assuming nothing changes with the number of bands being submitted, and the number of bands being approved, it's about 481 bands per month.

15000 / 481 = ~31 months or 2.6 more years. We "should" surpass 100,000 bands at the end of 2014 or in early 2015.

Well, I suppose you have to take into account the fact that the rate of accepted bands probably *is* decreasing, due to there being more obscure 80s/90s bands to be located and submitted back in the day. Now, with the opportunity to submit many of those taken up, it seems like a large chunk of the recently approved bands have just released their first album within the past two years.

How fitting that the anniversary of MA should fall on that most metal of all days, the 7th day of July (cue King Diamond sing-a-long). Epic congratulations are in order, as are many thanks for the insights into metal and metalheads that it's offered me. Here's to many more decades of brilliance

May the next ten years prove to be just as heavy!

Yeah, this website is usually one of the first three things I open whenever I get online - it's addictive, and it sure beats the hell out of the competition. I may still be a relative newbie here (and to metal generally), but having an active community resource like MA is really invaluable.

You do know that jail and prison are two different things, right? I'd hope you at least know that much. Second, all prisons have internet access. They're usually in the library. Of course, two-thirds of the sites on the web are blocked out for obvious reasons, but don't be fooled into thinking that any prison you see resembles Oz in any way. I mean, fuck, the local prisons in the area have the same catering and same food that you get at Citizens Bank Park. (literally, they're the same company doing both..)

I love MA and I have been following it practically since its appearance on net. If weren't for this great site, I would hardly meet such quantity of interesting metal bands.
Thanks and long may She live!

Lately I haven't had a whole lot of time to post on here. I try to drop in the Now Playing Thread every so often. I didn't realize this thread was even made until today. Just wanted to take the time and post. I have been posting on MA since 2008. Before that I was one of those silent lurkers for a long time. My old account got banned because I use to love making an ass out of myself regularly. Looking back, I am quite embarrassed by it. Well Since then, This website has expanded my metal musical taste in ways I could of never imagined. The expansion of my taste for extreme music has now carried over to other entire genres of music. I have gained a whole new respect for other types of music. I purposely dig for music with more value then just your typical force fed face value artists. In a weird way it all started because of this site. I have met a lot of great people on here as well. Regardless this being the internet. Regardless of metal being just loud teen angst music. I am not too cool to say I love this site and it has affected me in some way even if it is so insignificant on the priority list of life.

Just like the band Anvil, Encyclopedia Metallum: The Metal Archives is one of the greatest things to ever come out of Canada. It was because of this site that I managed to learn and discover awesome bands, epic & influencial Metal musicains, and Metal Legends.

LONG LIVE METAL ARCHIVES!!!!!! :metal:

I've discovered Nadja, Summoning, Darkspace, While Heaven Wept, Celtic Frost, Cirith Ungol, Damien Storm, Burzum, Verdunkelt and a few million other bands many of which I'd class as my favourites thanks to this site. I've stayed with/met people from all over Europe, made a bunch of friends some of whom I think will be bros for a long damn time and caught a big travelling bug thanks to this site. I've gotten hatemail and free promos thanks to this site. Wasted a lot of time, thanks to this site. I've probably drifted a lot further left wing thanks to this site...

Thinking about it, the archives have really influenced/helped define me over the last 8 years, way more than any website should. Looking forward to the next ten years bros

Obligatory praise post here. Definitely enabled me to explore subgenres/scenes and bands, and find out about a tonne of killer bands/albums/whatever. Pretty sure i wouldn't be listening to Liege Lord or Screamer without MA. Also: at times, it's provided me with yet another hobby. Discussions on every minute detail of H/S/P, album art, comeback albums, and of course, the opportunity to read/write reviews. One of my favourite websites of all time, i'd suppose. Cheers for the hard work Hellblazer, Morrigan, et al.

At least half the metal bands I listen to have come either from the Encyclopaedia or the Rec Forum. Needless to say, this is the best metal... No, the best music-related website I know. Cheers and a huge thanks to the founders and contributors

Like many of you, MA has been a constant in my life for close to 8 years. I lurked around the database for a year and then thought "Hey, I think I can contribute a bit". So I created my account...and soon enough, started following the forums from time to time. MA is such a brilliantly simple yet powerful tool for all of us and it feeds our curiosity with everything metal and I love it. Before MA (read before the interwebs), I relied on just the local music store and generic music zines for music. Now, for every new/old release, MA is a click away. Wish I posted more on the forums though.

Keep up the good work guys <3

Fuck... How do I missed... Congrats to Hellblazer and Morrigan for creating the greatest web I've seen, great display, cool topics, cool people, great organization and fair rules. I've learnt a lot from this web, not only about bands and metal culture, but music theory, differnt cultures and other handfull stuff (Even I think my english has improved, so fuck you Toffel)... So Cheers to the M-A family and best regards

Love this website. I know I haven't had a huge presence on the forums but I'm on this site all the time, scouring for new stuff to listen to. I owe nearly my entire metal knowledge to this place. Crazy to think I was 14 when I joined; I'm practically a different person now than I was back then. Not to mention, my brother is now 14 and I can't imagine him on a site like this

Anyway, cheers to the ten years! I've only got 3 more years to get my doctorate from the University Metallum!

Well as you can see from the info to the left of this, I've been coming here for a long time! I only recently started posting here again, but if I really think about it, I've visited this site for one reason or another at least twice a week since it started 10 years ago. A truly awesome invention, only metalheads would think to create something so nerdy and epic. Happy belated birthday M-A! Morrigan, HellBlazer, and the rest... thank you for creating the ultimate metal resource! I hope to be wishing you a happy 20th birthday in 10 years!

I remember around 2001-2003, I was a major supporter of http://www.bnrmetal.com and http://www.anus.com

Those were pretty much the greatest sites in the world.

Then one day, I was trying to find information about a band called Embrionic Death and after scrolling down, I saw a page with a band photo and release information! I was blown away, went into the IRC chat a few times. I pretty much left the Internet for 3 years after that or didn't use the site at all, but now I am lurking and posting a little bit more. The site has significantly improved since 2003-2004. I remember it being down several times in those days, but I guess over the years the financial situation improved for the owners and technology improved as well. Now this site has an overwhelming amount of content to a point where I don't even use the archives themselves. I have pretty much started to only listen to the things I've collected over the years. However, I feel the forums contain several people that I can relate to, which is something that I do not have in real life.

Anyway, happy belated birthday and thanks for keeping up with this site and leaving it ad free throughout all these years.

Definitely this. I used this site for band info years before I came a member and I think I lurked the forum for about a year before joining. Anyway this is an indispensable resource for information regarding bands and the forum is awesome, a lot of cool dudes on here. Reviewing here has helped me develop as a writer and reviewing here is a great way to get your writing out there. Here's to many more great years for the site  .

Wow, now it's the best on-line Metal Encyclopedia ever! Never forget those days when I went here in 2005 and see Manilla Road, Omen, Pokolgep and many unknown metal bands for that time... how it helps me to dig all 80's metal music that I like so much now! I'm very happy that I found it and I don't need another metal-related sites, really. And I've never seen such loyal staff as here... you know if you're gonna be with some Russian forums and metal-related sites there are always bad narrow-minded elitist administration... and poor information... I leave 'em all and although MA is not written in my native language I'm appreciating it ten thousand times more!
Thank you all for all of you! ;)

Hopefully there will even be some MA children around by that time!

Ok it's on, race for the first MA child begins now!

I'm actually surprised the site has only been around for 10 years, I've been here for like 6, and I'm kind of shocked to know I joined when it was still so young. Oh well, hooray for the best site on the internet.
