So a couple months ago Billy Talent put this out

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swAcNLxkrSE

and instantly, I am reminded of some kind of folk or power metal, though very watered down

the song sounds really close to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCu_jrog7E0
Jerusalem by Edguy,
am I wrong?

Eh, I don't hear it. Maybe there's a bias for me because I really don't like Edguy while Billy Talent's II and III are two of my most listened-to non metal albums over the last few years, but apart from the vocal melody being close in a spot here and there, they sound rather different. The new BT song basically just sounds like a darker Billy Talent song, not a hint of metal influence if you ask me. They've been getting darker and heavier with each album and this continues that trend.

I also like how the Billy Talent songs is infinitely more aggressive than the Edguy song. The rock band has more metal attitude than the metal band.

Pretty much what BastardHead said. Maybe a bit of trad influence there, but that's about it. Anyway, I'm actually kind of excited for this album. Just got back into listening to them a couple weeks ago and forgot how much I enjoyed their last two albums. II was always my favourite from them, but I enjoy III more and more with every listen.

I do hear what you heard, the vocal melody at the start sounding similar. Also enjoyed the Billy Talent one more. Their guitarist has a cool style.

I like Billy Talent in general because they are consistent and they do sound good live. I'm a fan of BT #1, I wasn't so amazed by 2# so I do like #3. From the sound of the Viking Death March they are going to bring another good album that would have 3-4 tracks that would be stuck in your head after 1-2 listens of the album.

Been a fan since Try Honesty came out. Though I must say, I'm not so big on the first album anymore. I was a teen and that was the target audience. A few songs have stayed with me, but only a few. II and III were more mature, musically varied albums. Great band. The new track is solid enough, nothing mind-blowing but the album is sure to be a fine effort.

Why did you bump this thread just to say that? Coulda just let it stay with the other forgotten July topics. Anyway, this IS a good band. I'd like them a lot more with a different vocalist, but their guitarist makes some killer riffs, plays lots of unconventional chords and rhythms. They're not trying to be anything they're not; they're just some dudes that have been grinding for a long time. I'm glad they've found some success.

I got that vibe as well, mainly from the marching rhythm of the song probably though. Also, I don't feel they'll ever top the raw, punkness of their debut, but this new album was actually decently promising.
