Sod off Ed. Don't be so quick to lump em in as a glam band. They were commercially successful, have some catchy songs and whatnot but there is a considerable gulf between this group, and shit like Faster Pussycat & Poison. Skid Row has balls, attitude and is about heavy metal, not histrionic, over the top candy ass lyrics about chasing cooz and saccharine, cliched balladry. Poison, Faster Pussycat etc are nothing like Skid Row.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't 'I Remember You' a saccharine, clichéd ballad? I didn't call 'em glam, either, they're probably more like a more metallic GNR, I still don't like 'em, though.

Listening to Tyrant again. Too Late to Pray is sweet, I wish more heavy metal had a guitar sound like this.

I'm only familiar with the Spanish Crom from the 80s.

Ed: Yeah i was just addressing general criticisms of the band, don't get touchy. "Needles to say"

Tyrant is rad but christian :nono:

Don't be blue, Peter!

I need to give Legions of the Dead another listen, but I actually like the Christian lyrics on Too Late to Pray. Has anyone here heard their mid-1990s album? Apparently, it's surprisingly good.

I've never heard it - but i love the first two hardout. I completely forget about band's later stuff a lot of the time. Have they ever reformed? They need to be playing Europe.

Legions of the Dead is a classic. I bought it on vinyl when it came out and never knew they were christian.

"King of Kings" is alright, but not nearly as apocalyptic as the second album or catchy as the first.

Their approach to Christian lyrics is pretty amazing though. I didn't even think of them as Christian for several years... dark armageddon stuff done right. Not preachy in the least.

They've supposedly been working on new material for years now. I've been waiting impatiently forever, I'm pretty curious to see how Glen May's voice has held up...

I find myself listening to Legions of the Dead a lot more often than Too Late To Pray. They're both great, but TLTP is just one of those draining albums that I don't want to put on unless I can give it my full attention and then crash afterwards. The debut on the other hand is just super catchy heavy metal with touches of doom influence here and there. Rocky fucking Rockwell...how can you not love that guy?

I ain't crazy about his solos, but his riffs are superb. New Tyrant would be cool, they should get out there again, they seem like the sort of band who'd do well at KIT. Today was the first time in about a year that I listened to Too Late to Pray and it really kicked my arse.

Yeah I can't say the solos stick to my ribs for any great length of time, but you're dead-on about the riffing. They were kind of late to the game to be playing straight up heavy metal, but I LOVE how pure it is, with no hint or trace of thrash leaking in.

Speaking of Tyrant, I still can't believe an old lady recommended them to me..... But yeah, they're pretty cool, and quite unique to boot. Don't think I've heard anything quite like them in the whole reign of classic heavy metal. Actually, you know what? That's what I'm gonna ask for now; stuff that resembles Tyrant (especially Too Late To Pray). The more similar, the better. Also, TYRANT ARE CHRISTIAN?!

Can't speak for the rest of their discography, but at least Slave to the Grind isn't anywhere near crappy AOR. Just balls to the wall heavy metal with only a tinge of sleaze in it. Recommended.

See this is what people always say - about Christian bands like St Vitus or Pentagram especially - and to me, it just sounds incessant, insidious and preachy. People say how "dark" they are, but all i hear is a bunch of hamfisted cramming of biblical evangelicalism, misappropriating heavy metal to preach their pathetic religion at us longhairs who "need to be saved".

Could you link to some lyrics you find "preachy" from Saint Vitus? Pentagram play both sides of the fence, just like any good doom band should. They followed right in Sabbaths footsteps with that, although maybe taking it further with songs like The Ghoul and Sinister.

Saint Vitus is far from preachy in my opinion, Griffin of Pentagram in Place of Skulls IS preachy.

Yeah, there aren't really any "preachy" Vitus songs. Nor Pentagram songs, as far as I can remember. Place of Skulls is more overt, definitely, because Victor found god after he left Pentagram. Trouble were certainly the most overtly christian of the original doom bands.

Hell, it's probably a bit of a stretch to call either Vitus or Pentagram (!!) "Christian". Tyrant and Fifth Angel's stuff is much more loaded with christian ideology, I reckon. But at the end of the day it really doesn't matter so much to me, I don't like any of them more or less because of their religious views.

WOlf's vocals aren't great either, iirc. You might want to check out the bands Steelwing, Katana, Metal Inquisitor and Enforcer (SWE).

Same here. Besides christian metal tends to be great anyway and this is coming from a total atheist. :-P

Well, I'd say that depends on the band, really. There's a big difference between, say, Saviour Machine and Underoath. Hint: one sucks, the other doesn't.

Speaking of (ex-)christian bands, the new live album from the folks of Stratovarius is actually very good!
Kotipelto nails all the songs, and the balance is very well done : the bass is crunchy without between overpowering, and the crowd is just loud enough.
As long as you like Strato without Tollki, this is a must-have! Even their cover of Burn is among the better ones.

Just outta curiosity I checked that cover of Purple's Burn, and it feels..... Lacking. I don't know, it's well executed and all, yeah, but it just doesn't have any heart if you ask me. I think Riot's cover of that very song is much better.

I loved his vocals on the last two Wolf albums. I feel he's vastly improved if you compare those records to the older stuff. Not to say he was terrible in the first place, The Black Flame is my favourite even though the vocals sometimes go out of tune.

I second Enforcer. Diamonds was fantastic, not a bad track on that album. I can't wait to hear their new stuff.
