Well this is big news. Nice work, I think it will come in handy.

Meshuggah has got to be the most infuriating band on the planet. I want to hate them. I really do. The way their fans mindlessly slather pseudo-intellectual praise all over their material raises a level of sycophancy second only to Tool fans. Jens's monotone scream is the sort of thing that should have me frothing at the mouth in rage. The stupid chugging where guitar riffs should go should only seal their fate in my book.

So why, then, when they release a new album, do I feel compelled to buy it? And furthermore, why I do ENJOY it so damn much? Just when their style seems to have run its full course, and I fully expect to be bored to tears by yet another album full of polymetric chuggery, they release something that SOMEHOW ends up being even more awesome than they ever were. And yeah, I'm talking about Koloss being a sweet-ass album. By a band I have no real excuse for enjoying.

Gods do I hate their guts for this.

Haha. Everyone knows my feelings towards this band so welcome to our side.

Also I agree with everything Calusari said.

Meshuggah Fans® usually only appear on YouTube, which is good because it makes them easy to avoid.

This new forum will probably work poorly for me, usually bands touring aus get threads in the metal forum or brought up on the FFA which I always check, I can see myself checking this new board rarely due to it only having relevant content to me half a dozen times a year.

Rachel Maddow mentions Deicide and Morbid Angel in an excerpt from her show.

See people, liberals aren't entirely useless :-P

She's done that before. I remember her once making fun of Republicans in 2010 or so, for rallying in Florida when that was where a bunch of the early DM bands who go around talking about hatred and Satanism formed.
Namedropped Deicide and a few other bands I can't remember.

Who knows, maybe she does like metal. *shrug*

EDIT: just wached the video, I see she's basically doing the same thing there. Maybe that's just her go-to below-the-bet line for making fun of Republicans in Florida.

Hey, I've been willing to defend Meshuggah since Catch 33 and I as a band that at least does something different. But I've definitely met people in the meatspace who talk about them like they're musical gods only to be understood by the highest intellectual titans. And that's obnoxious.

But no, Koloss takes a huge step towards more melodicism in their music, which they desperately needed. And so now it's like they're becoming a real band. And dammit this album has me enthralled.

Funny thing is that 'Kolos(s)' means 'ass' in Greek. Therefore '...I'm talking about ass being a sweet-ass album.' I find that mildly amusing. :-D

Oh man I wish I could take credit for that being an intentional pun. But hey, you learn something every day!

New forum seems like a cool idea. Just one question: if we're in a band and we've got an upcoming gig, can we pimp it there, or should that strictly remain in the promo forum?

Why is being "different" (read: playing technical nu metal) worth defending?

Technical nu-metal sounds like it'd be amusing. I'm imagining the chunky riffs of Limp Bizkit's "Break Stuff" with the usual nu-metal "pounding" sparseness filled in with pianos and Brain Drill noodling.

I honestly noticed the capitalization of the subforums ("Metal discussion" > "Metal Discussion", etc.) before the new subforum. It's been bothering me all morning.

In other news, my pet rats have once again reinforced my desire for a save/reload system for my life, by peeing on and testing the palatability of the cardboard sleeve on my copy of In the Nightside Eclipse. Not that I particulary care about that album, nor is it their fault, but I'm scared to imagine what would have happened if they had commenced their piss-eating further up the shelf, where my copy of Disaffected's album resides... :(

Yeah, I thought that was a good pun even though unintentional on your part. :-P

I have that question as well, about the new sub-forum.

I would rather, in most cases at least, listen to a band that does something different poorly than a mediocre band that adheres to traditional conventions.

Bulldozer's Dance Got Sick EP may be full of bad ideas, but at least it has ideas, compared to Slayer's Christ Illusion. And by that metric, I will defend DGS over CI any day.

And for the record, I think Chaosphere and Nothing blow chunks. DEI has some good songs, some bad ones. Ditto for Obzen (Combustion just straight up kills). Koloss shows that there is some value in the stuff they were playing, as it helped the band develop into something unique that doesn't suck. So yes, I would prefer that bands offer us another Chaosphere than another Municipal Waste album. We don't need either, but if I had to choose...

Damn I've got some issues, I finally get some guys to be in a band and thats when I had startling revelation, the guy I got to drum for us seems to be on the same page as me, pretty metal orientated (at least enough to know KSE is metalcore and not death metal) but my singer (who is also my best friend of 4 years) only sings clean vocals, which isn't going to sound right over top of the blackened death/grind shit I've been writing.

It'll at least be interesting.

Clean vox + extreme metal can work! Just take the Anaal Nathrakh formula and go totally overboard with it.

So the new Dead Can Dance album is.... good. It's a Dead Can Dance album, and that's pretty much all I can say about it. The song writing is almost impeccable but they haven't done a single thing they never did before and the world wouldn't be different if they'd never made this.

Maybe power/deathgrind? Like Raintime or Skyfire + grind?

I kinda like how Crescent Shield's music in some odd way seems to echo the sort of "graphic novel" spirit suggested by their cover art. Not really sure how that works, but it's neat, and also puts the theatricality of power metal in a slightly more interesting context. Should look into more of their stuff.

I know what you mean .. It works for both ablums oddly well. At first I was doing what I could to ignore the artwork, but the toob wouldn't really let me do that. Both covers ended up working surprisingly well and giving the music a textural- and color pallet I found improved things.

I think they're pretty hit and miss, but their good songs are satisfying.

Yeah but he probably cross-dresses with Sunn O))) blasting in the background. Which is much less gay than enjoying Kiss.

I think Tony's cross-dressing is pretty rad, but Sunn O))) are just awful. Sexually, I'm quite confused about the whole thing.
