Necro, check out the song "Kingdom of the Fearless". If that doesn't convert you into a VS fan, you can't be helped.

As far as the DeFeis vs. Adams argument, DeFeis blows Adams out of the water completely. Well - in his prime, anyway. His ability to flawlessly transition from pure aggression to soothing care is amazing, and his range is absolutely fantastic. Eric Adams is definitely a good singer, but as FSM said, he's not nearly as versatile, and I don't even think his aggressive tone is as good as DeFeis' - just compare Hail to England and Marriage II and see who sounds better to you. If your answer is Adams - you obviously aren't capable of grasping the beauty of David DeFeis' voice. :-P

And speaking of DeFeis, am I the only who used to think that those wordless vocal lines in Prometheus The Fallen One's intro were done by a woman? It's just that I was really suprised to later find out that there were no guest vocals on that album......

That song was good, Jopherlex, and David sounded somewhat better, but I'm still not a fan of his vocals. The solos were blistering though.

And hey, while on the subject of Manowar, I'll ask; what do you people think of the debut? Sure, it has it's flaws (mostly when it comes to the production), but so far it's the only Manowar album I can listen to as a whole without feeling ridiculous. Besides, it has great stuff in it, of course, and it just sounds so much more sincere than their later work.

It is flawless. ;)

I can sort of see how you might not be too enthused with DeFeis after hearing, say, the title track to Invictus - his vocals there are intentionally very different from his normal midrange (though they're brilliant in context). He's certainly not "shrieky," though, and the fact is that while DeFeis certainly has a thunderous midrange to compete with the best of them, he also has a great many other facets to his voice and he's not afraid to use all of them. I can't imagine classic VS working if he weren't as versatile as he is.

The question is wether those notes weren't actually pitch shifted. I read somewhere that's a G6 (!) means it's in the whistle register. It's possible, but it's rather questionable wether David is/was capable of doing it live. Still a nice vocal intro however.

I think the Marriage series feature David's best vocal lines. He does a bit of everything there; wether its soft singing, using his proud midrange vocals or shrieking the hell out. ''I Will Come For You'' has some of David's best singing for sure. CAST OUT FROM EDEN BAPTISED INTO TREASON WITH SIGHTLESS EYES. LOST CLOUDS OF REASON FALLS HOPE BURNING SEASON - A GODLESS LIEEEE!

A shame he kinda blows nowadays.

Can you guys rec me some stuff along the lines of Stained Class, Iron Maiden's s/t, and Melissa? Just good ol' classic heavy metal. Not super picky about vocals though I definitely like falsettos and stuff that's a bit over the top. I also love Rainbow/Dio. Nothing is really too obvious as I've never delved too deep beyond the big names of the style. Thanks!

New Satan's Host? Awesome! As long as it follows By the Hands of the Devil's footsteps, I'll be happy, although I wouldn't speak out against a less clinical production and just slightly shorter songs.

It's just him using whistle voice. He does it in the beginning of "Immortal I Stand" as well but briefer.

I always had a copy of Eidolon's Nightmare World sitting around; I never really cared for it at first. I'm listening to it now and it's interesting, really aggressive and heavy stuff.

Looking for some sick NWOBHM from the late 70's/early 80's. Sick solos, awesome vocals and cool riffs. My band is trying to be like G.I.S.M. so instead of blatantly ripping them off I feel if I need to listen to more heavy metal because I've listened to so much punk already. No beginner recs like Iron Maiden or Judas Priest.

Bloodbound's Tabula Rasa is such a catchy album. I don't like the album that much even but I can't resist singing along to most of the songs.

Really now? Manowar's early albums are all exceptional... Into Glory Ride is perhaps the best for me, but those first 4 albums are all exceptional. I'm really going to refuse to judge him as to whether he can use his "whistle range", too. :P I don't see the two as that similar, to be honest, and - as for vocal style alone - I might give the edge to Adams. Certainly he's still good live, but on the last Manowar album he sounded pretty crappy (not that it matters, anyway).

Well in a way I agree to a point there, that Manowar has never fully utilized Adams in the best way possible. He's been great for ages and one of the best, but if he were in a better band, he would've been even better. He's a legend, but could've been so much more in my eyes.

The only Manowar album that really does it for me anymore is Battle Hymns. The other original three are good too and they've had some cool songs elsewhere, but eh, all Battle Hymns for me otherwise. :p

Found that album also to very meh tbh.

Manowar are a band that have grown on me the last coupla years, i find my favourite tracks to be more the longer epic tracks such as Battle Hymns, Revelation & Guyana. but most of their albums suffer from the fatal flaw which is obligatory bass solo track which are all absolute torture to listen too (especially the one on Hail to England, what in the name of fuck is that?)

Also any good Power metal been released in 2012? found it to be quite a slow year so far but there might be stuff that ive missed. What i have up to know:

Blind Guardian (Compilation)
Firewind
Luca Turilli's Rhapsody
Pathfinder
Primal Fear
RAM
Sabaton
Sonata Arctica
Steelwing
Unisonic

so any help here?

Not strictly Power Metal but...

Axel Rudi Pell - The Circle
Herman Fucking Frank - Right in the guts
Iron Fire - Voyage of the damned

But you're right, 2012 has been a slow year for Power Metal so far. Are there high-profile albums expected for the second part of the year?

The new Pharaoh, Sonata Arctica, Iron Fire and Herman Frank albums are all very good. Still got Hellwell and Satan's Host too - but yeah not as many clear stand outs as the last few years, for sure. Maybe some gems will pop up.

I'm still enjoying all the first four albums but when I put some Manowar on it's Into Glory Ride with 90% probability. Ok, the first song is kind of stupid and doesn't sit well with rest of the album but other than that it's flawless and to me really the album I compare all epic metal to.

Plus we're still expecting a new Satan's Host and Mark Shelton's Hellwell project too.

Also, just survived a tornado to see Manilla Road and Helstar this weekend. Totally fanboyed over both, they both killed live. Unfortunately Manilla Road had to cut their set a bit short due to the tornado having knocked power out to the venue earlier in the day, but they still played a lot of great songs and did a generally awesome job. And Helstar played "Towards the Unknown", so I basically shit everyone's pants with delight. A bunch of other bands played too, but I ended up missing Borrowed Time due to shitty traffic. However, lead singer JP did get to come up onstage later along with James Rivera to sing guest vocals for Manilla Road's encore ("Necropolis" of course) and nailed it despite totally fanboying over being onstage with Shelton. Argus were excellent as well, they're really getting very good at the trad doom meets epic doom meets NWOBHM thing.

Anyway, yeah, Warriors of Metal was a blast. Definitely going next year.

Yeah, Helstar are a blast live. I saw them a while back in a tiny venue, playing for only 30 people or so - great performance, full of energy despite the tiny audience. Even their newer material which I don't like so much was enjoyable by virtue of how enthusiastically they played.

That Tornado was pretty crazy. Some guy said he was living in Ohio his whole life and never saw anything like it. At least we got to see some Manilla Road compared to none. The only downside was no Twisted Tower Dire but all in all a great weekend and I'm going back next year.

Ultra jealous. I need to see Helstar sometime, being close to Houston.

Yeah new Steel Assassin keeps getting better with each listen of it, really. It's very much 90s/2000s Maidenish in my opinion. Now, that's good and all unless any of you fans of the last two albums are present.

Battleroar's Age of Chaos is pretty cool. Typical epic metal stuff, ala Doomsword or Atlantean Kodex if they were better in the studio. Plus, Mark Shelton pops up on two songs!

There were something like 100-150 at Warriors of Metal, though it was hard to tell as everyone was spread out and didn't go to see every band. This was my first year, but according to veterans it's been getting steadily bigger. Hopefully it continues to grow.

Manilla Road put on an amazing fucking show, its a shame they had to truncate their set but they played a killer list. A lot heavier on the Open the Gates than I would have expected but since its my favorite I'm not complaining. The highlights for me were easily Astronomica and surprisingly The Riddle Master. I never would have picked that as a "must-hear" live song but it was powerful.

We missed Borrowed Time but I became a huge fan of theirs anyway. Grabbed the Arcane Metal Arts demo with the 2 newer songs tacked on. Really promising stuff, I can't wait for them to put out a full-length. The two newer tracks actually sound older and more NWOBHM inspired so I'm curious to see how a full album is going to sound. I've got the feeling they put on a pretty serious show, just from watching them in the crowd.

The whole thing was definitely a lot smaller and more intimate than I was expecting. Hopefully they catch a break with the weather next year.
