Sorry for the potentially confusing title :)

I noticed that in the web address for a band's page on the metal archives there is a number at the very end of the address

for example:
http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Black_Sabbath/99

Does anyone know what the number means, and does anyone know which band, if any, has number 1?

It's the number the band was added, so Amorphis has number 1 because they were the first band on here.

Well, it actually means when the band was added, even if it is still in the user's draft, like this band. The number is 3540346934, yet the stat counter at the top of the homepage of MA reads 85150.

The name part doesn't even matter, only the number. You could open a link to http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Mar ... y_Bunch/99 and it will still take, you to the Black Sabbath page.

That's handy - I was interested in which bands showed up at low-numbers, and now I know.

It's the band's internal ID in the database.

While I'm aware of most of this stuff, there is one thing about this I would like to know, does anyone know when the number system shifted from direct counting to the lengthy ones that aren't in obvious order? I always liked the sequencial system.

I'm sure it predated the shift to V2, I'm sure I remember seeing those massive numbers in the old days when there was no band name in the address.

Could be right. I only noticed them after V2 and assumed they were connected.

It's not v2. There was some weird glitch in the database a few years ago and the auto-increment counter got messed up. I have no explanation for it, literally.

Ah ok then, I would have been a little disappointed in you guys if you did it deliberately since it's such a fun little detail. Any idea what was the last band to be in the old count?
