I was bored, so I just recorded this. I'm trying to iron out issues with vocals, the main problem being that I have no decent place to record them, an oversensitive mic, no pop filter, and a mic cable that's way too short. haha. Plus, I love the original version of this song except for the horrid vocals, so I wanted to improve on it. Anyway, enjoy:

Oh and also, since I don't have any decent monitor speakers, can some of you more recording-savvy folks critique my mix? I'm mostly concerned about the kick drum and bass guitar levels.

got the production right! The vocals are pretty cool too. Overall, I'd say this is a pretty successful cover. Albeit, I like covers a bit more "original" but as far as remaining faithful, this is really good! Shows your mastery of all sorts of crafts.

Thank you. That guitar sound was completely free, by the way. I just ran my guitar straight into my computer and used amp sim VSTs. I used the JCM900 and tubescreamer for the amp, from the Simulanalog guitar suite:

And the speaker sim VST was the Poulin LeCab:

All free, and highly recommended.

This is an amazing cover! I like it better than the original to be honest, the vocals in this make it way better. What drum program are you using?

Great cover. My best advice is to keep using the same format for recording vocals as they sound fine.

This is a quality cover! I never had a problem with the original vocals but yours were better I'd say, haha. A question about your guitar recording: how did you do it? Were you plugged directly into your computer through the mic-jack? The sound is great.

To expand a little on my comments, I ran my guitar into a countryman directbox, then a presonus audiobox usb, then into my computer. But essentially, I just ran it into my computer.

For how you did it, I can't imagine making it better. I will say though, the whole amp sim thing really bothers me. You just can't beat the sound of an actual amp. I've had limited experience myself using them, though I can understand the versatility aspect. For recording though, I will always use real amps. Vocally, not bad, though I would 1. Tone down the distortion you put on it, or take it off all together and replace it wit ha bit of reverb, and 2. Push a bit more with your vocals. Part of why I like Tomas Lindberg, and particularly on that song, is that he sounds like he is screaming his fucking head off. Im not saying change your style, but it has that unmistakable sound of the fake scream, if you know what I mean.

Believe me, I would like to use real amps, but that's just not a possibility right now due to me living in barracks. I actually don't have much distortion on the vocals, the knob's on 1. I do need to push it more though, as you said, it's just a matter of more practice. And again, once I leave this shithole and live back in the states with my wife I can be louder, then I'll be yelling a good bit.
