Hi, I'm looking for instrumental post-metal. preferably something atmospheric with some sludge mixed in as well. I can't get too specific because I don't really know any great instrumental bands, so any recs would be great.

One of my favorite instrumental band is Explosions in the Sky:

God Is an Astronaut is another good one:

Pelican is an obvious one:

Although I don't think EitS and GiaA has Sludge mix.

Parabstruse released a very solid 10 minute track years ago entitled "And I, the Cape of...". Perhaps to this day, one of my favorite "post-metal" songs. The follow up album is pretty much straight forward post-rock with out any metal but worth a listen if you dig God is an Astronaut or Explosions etc... Anyways. You can listen to the track here on last.fm:

Also This Will Destroy You's last album "Tunnel Blanket" had a very dense and heavy atmosphere. You can certainly here influences of drone and sludge throughout the album.

Liam is excellent as well. They remind me at times of Pelican (already mentioned) but can get pretty doomy. Excellent source of melancholy.

Seconding Shadowcast Sun and sleepmakeswaves. great bands. i'll rec Landforge. they mixed post metal and post rock quite well, and have a nice ethereal sound at times. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5M3wuWwlGVg

Seconding Pelican. I really, really like their stuff. I got their new EP not that long ago. It's short, but it's damn good.
