I have been listening to heavy metal forever really, and recently started to really get into death metal (melodic mostly). I'm even going to the Death show in SF. Can you guys suggest some great bands to me to look into? I really like Obscura, Septic Flesh, Children of Bodom, Arch Enemy, Ablazer, Morbid Angel, Possessed, In Flames, and Unleashed to name a few.

You should use the similar artists function on the main site too.

Check out Kalmah if you don't know them

Maybe you'll like the melodic death/doom scene from Finland, bands like Swallow the Sun, Insomnium, Barren Earth...

Part of branching out in Death Metal is exploring all the different sounds. A list of bands you should check out that will give you a sense of multiple Death Metal styles.

Incantation
Angelcorpse
Anata- I think you will really like this one.
The Black Dahlia Murder- don't let haters sway you on this band... they are right up your alley.
Deeds of Flesh
Intestine Baalism- Another one I think you might enjoy.
diSEMBOWELMENT- the name is very misleading.
Impaled
Immolation

And one more: Portal... this one might be interesting for you :P

Saw Swallow the Sun and Barren Earth live. Not really my taste even though I now like death metal and I love doom metal.

Try Bloodbath - Nightmares Made Flesh. Fast, straighforward death metal.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sBYyedW ... re=related Yes, for some reason, someone uploaded the entire album as a whole.

Gotta agree with most of these recs. You gotta realize there are two majors camps in death metal. The old and new school. Possessed and Morbid Angel are very much part of the old school, you're on the right track with them. Also you can't go wrong with Death. Also check out Autopsy, Gorguts, Suffocation (the last old school band imo besides retro bands), Necrophobic, Nocturnus (Morbid Angel with keyboards), Obituary, and Exhumed.

As far as the newer sound goes, Black Dahlia Murder is one of the best. Also check out Dying Fetus, Misery Index, Gorgasm, Defeated Sanity, Cerebral Bore, Devourment, Hour Of Penance, and Cattle Decapitation.

I'm sure you'd love Before the Dawn, I've really started to love them in the past weeks.

Bolt Thrower is essential when getting into Death Metal
The Absence is one of my favorite melodic death metal bands

Your list of death metal bands you like are quite various so it is hard to pinpoint a particular style you would enjoy.

Since you are just starting then I suggest beginning with the big names.

Entombed, Dismember, and Grave from Sweden.
Obituary, Cannibal Corpse, Immolation, Incantation, Deicide, Autopsy, Death, Suffocation from the USA.
Demigod, Convulse, Funebre, and Purtenance from Finland.
Bolt Thrower, Pestilence, Kataklysm, and Krisiun are some more from various other countries.

Figure out which ones you like and what it is about them to narrow down which style you like. The only brutal band I mentioned is Suffocation as I pretty much dislike brutal death metal universally. Just search the band pages to check out reviews to see which albums you think would be the most appealing to you for those that have numerous albums.

I guess the main reason I love Children of Bodom, Ablazer, and Obscura is for the actual musical compositions of it with mainly lead guitar parts and harmonies. I like some old school like Possessed and Death but I seem to focus more on the melodic part for the music. The singing/lyrical content is not that big for me. Thanks for all the suggested bands. I heard of of many but I have not quite looked into them and then heard some I didn't know existed.

Since you like CoB maybe you should try Blood Stain Child and Whispered.

Liked Whispered but not Blood Stain Child (it was too electronic for the vocals, still has to be like true metal for me)

Well, BSD started off with no electronic elements, and started incorporating more and more. In their first two albums they were known for sounding just like Children of Bodom.

Since you're only now getting into death metal, I'll assume you haven't yet listened to Carcass?

Check out Necroticism and Heartwork.

Necroticism is a death metal album with some very melodic parts and Heartwork is one of the first melodeath albums, maybe one of the few actual melodic death metal ones.

Also check out Finland's Scum. I personally think they're quite accessible, though not exactly a typical death metal band.
