I don't know if this kind of topic has been done before since I searched for it but didn't find anything, but yeah.

Who was your first Metal band that you listened to and got into? That band that gives you nostalgia when you dust off that old CD and play on your computer or radio for old times sake? For me, its Black Sabbath.

Metal-Archives is almost a decade old. What makes you think that this kind of thread hasn't been done before?

Anyway, Blind Guardian. Friend sent me songs through file transfer on AIM.

This first metal band that I was interested in was Napalm Death, but I don't really remember why I got into them.

I used to listen to literally nothing buy Greenday and The Pogues (the latter, I still consider good) until one day, a friend of mine who was an immense Megadeth fanboy, sent me the song "Peace Sells" with bluetooth. My reaction was "Wow... this was on Vice City" and fairly soon after that I bought the album. It took me a while to progress through the obvious channels - Testament, Metallica and oddly Gammacide, before diversifying fairly exponantially from there on in.

Consequently, I feel a strong loyalty to thrash, and I still feel a lot of enjoyment listening to the Peace Sells album, but other than the early four albums, I don't listen to much Megadeth anymore.

My first was Motorhead; I'd just gotten into professional wrestling and found out that they had made entrance songs for a wrestler known as Triple H, and a team the latter wrestler was in called Evolution. I heard more of Motorhead, and liked what I heard so I kept investigating. My grandparents said both my interest in wrestling and heavy metal were both a phase and I would stop by the next year; that was in 2007. I still listen to metal proudly, and still watch a bit of wrestling (mostly the hardcore and Japanese promotions).

Iron Maiden.

I was about 15/16 and mainly listened to rock music from the 60s/70s like The Beatles and The Doors. Then one day I was in HMV and saw an Iron Maiden greatest hits CD on sale and decided to pick it up, it blew me away and I slowly got into metal from there.

I would say for me it was a combination of Metallica (One specifically) and Bullet for My Valentine. I still listen to both.

Accept, in 2004. When I've heard 'em I've thinking that it's heaviest music ever created.

Probably Black Sabbath. In elementary school I was mostly into classic rock and hard rock until some friends got me listening to Sabbath and later Metallica.

First things in the general direction were Europe's "The Final Countdown" and Bon Jovi's "Slippery When Wet", of which I liked the latter significantly better than the former (less keyboard wank). Then "Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter" became somewhat of a hit, so my brother bought "No Prayer for the Dying" and copied it on tape for me, and I listened to it to death. Then I got my hands on "Powerslave" and "Piece of Mind" and again listened to them to death. So, short answer: Iron Maiden.

Is not a metal band

Is all you want to do on this forum is debate metalness and crusade against bands you deem not worthy? BFMV obviously have metallica qualities and if they led him to get into metal than he can still credit them.

Personally, I started to get into metal during middle school, I guess that would be around 2006-7? My friends suddenly started wearing Iron Maiden, Motley Crue and Death shirts to school (complete with denim vests... pretty goofy-looking for such young kids, actually). Not wanting to be left behind, I started checking out the bands they were listening to and it was all downhill from there! I remember many nights spent watching old Maiden videos on Youtube in awe, and listening to all of Master of Puppets repeatedly as well. I guess my first metal albums were that, Number of the Beast and the Black Album.

Rhapsody, Holy Thunderforce blew my fucking head, before that I listened to punk because it was the heaviest stuff that I knew. But oh boy, that song, Holy Thunderforce, it's awesome.

And Manowar's The Gods Made Heavy Metal, made me a fanboy til this very day.

Suuuuch an old thread. Anyway, Iron Maiden for me. My brother in law showed them to me, and since them I've loved them so.

Can't say which one came first, because between 1986 and 1989, I bought the following cassettes and I can't remember which one I got first...I just remember listening the absolute fuck outta them all. It's like they all landed in my lap at the same time.

Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet
Poison - Open Up And Say... Ahh!
Gunners - Appetite For Destruction
Motley Crue - Dr Feelgood
Aerosmith - Pump
Metallica - ...And Justice For All
Slayer - South of Heaven

Still hold these albums dear to my heart and crank them all the time.

There's no debating it, it's simply a fact. Also what qualities do those bands share? And if by 'deeming not worthy' you mean 'judging music objectively' then yes.

Anyways the first metal band I found was Slayer.

BFMV were here on the Metal Archives back in the day. Food for thought.

Anyways, the first indisputably metal album I heard was either Metallica's self-titled or Skid Row's Slave to the Grind, but honestly Slipknot's music made more progress towards turning me into a metalhead than either of those two albums did.

My first metal band was either Black Sabbath or Ozzy Osbourne (minus Black Sabbath); my mom used to sing me Ozzy songs as lullabies when I was a baby, and her boyfriend always played Sabbath and AC/DC in his truck. He also played some Drowning Pool. I wasn't even 10 years old and I was singing "LET THE BODIES HIT THE FLOOOOOOOOOOR!!!"

They lead me into metal, and they have a few metal songs. But whatever, I'm thankful for the music they provided me, and that's why I brought them up.

One of my teachers in freshman year of high school let us bring music in to play occasionally, some dude brought in Dragonforce and I was like "Holy shit, what is this?!" Of course this led me to be a complete power metal junkie. Yeah, the shitty popstars of PM, but then again, there's worse bands out there.

BFMV were on the archives briefly which means they aren't too far off. Besides they are a gateway band and has some association with metal, so next time you may want to think before leaving little stupid comments like "They are not metal."

I've said this in a few other threads over the years but for me I got Metallica's Reload for Christmas one year after hearing them on mtv 2 or something and then I got into nu metal as that was the heaviest stuff I could find on tv, and I discovered some nu metal magazines like America's Rock circus or something. I heard Sepultura's Roots and Satyricon's Fuel for Hatred on mtv 2 one day and then through Kazaa I downloaded all the other stuff users shared that were sharing these bands. Then buying magazine's like Revolver, and later metal hammer and using search engines and forums I began my quest into metal.

Sadly I never knew anyone who listened to this stuff so if it wasn't for the internet I would never have discovered metal. A lot of people have really been missing out, simply because they were not exposed to metal.

For me it was Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, (maybe) Kiss, and unfortunately Slipknot (though i stopped listening to them around 2005). I first heard the Sabbath back in 2000, that's when i got really interested in this kind of music.

I listened to a lot of the more popular 90s metal bands, like Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and Kyuss. I liked their heavier stuff the most and wanted more but I never really knew where to go about finding that. My real gateway band that led me to getting more and more into metal was Electric Wizard. My brother heard them on Youtube, I think it was a related video to some Kyuss song. Thought it was absolutely massive and crushing. We both signed up for MA and got really into stoner doom.

Metallica in middle school. From there to Metal Church to Megadeth to Dream Theater to some power metal (Kamelot, Symphony X, Sonata Arctica), until a friend showed me Agalloch. Eventually I accepted the vocals, with the help of a friend showing me Wintersun. Tried to get into death metal, but failed, ultimately ending up as a fan of primarily atmospheric black metal, blackened doom, funeral doom, etc.

So, I started with Metallica, but now I don't listen to any thrash. Indeed, I find most kinds of metal to be seriously wanting when it comes to artistic sophistication, and then I become bored. There are relatively few connections between my current tastes and my "original" metal tastes, e.g. Metallica.

I think I started off with the heavier grunge bands like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, then a friend made me listen to Kyuss. That was a good move. Metallica and Iron Maiden soon followed. etc etc.

The first metal band I've ever heard was probably something like Ozzy or Metallica or Def Leppard--something that would've been on the radio. I was only barely aware of metal as a genre of music, and even then, I thought it was interchangeable with rock.

The first metal band that I was introduced to by someone I know was Iced Earth, after Horror Show came out, and my sister was geeking out over "Wolf" (because she loves wolves and it was a match made in heaven for her). I thought the song was kinda cool, but I never explored the genre any further.

The first metal band to outright get me into metal was Nightwish about 3 years later. I loved classical music and I enjoyed hard rock, so when I heard those elements come together for the first time in the form of "Dead Boy's Poem," I nearly fell on my face from sheer joy and I HAD to find more. I HAD to find more of this stuff.

I was developing a taste for fast and noisy music throughout high school, and found my way into a lot of metal related stuff. By the strictest definition, it was Metallica, specifically through "Ride the Lightning", although I heard tinges of stuff like Dragonforce and Judas Priest before then. Electric Eel Shock bears some note - while their metalness is up for debate, I'd say their album "Go USA!/Go Europe!" (different names depending on release region) was a crucial step in this direction for me.

System of A Down and Slipknot when I was 12. Though they're not metal per se. But basically everything else followed from there. Dunno how I got into metal first. Just started listening to the Kerrang channel one day. Back then it was some way decent.

Either Obituary or Necrophagia. Danzig, Metallica, and Black Sabbath followed very shortly. The rest is history.

The first real metal band I got into was As I Lay Dying (their most metal album, An Ocean Between Us). They're Metalcore, but metal enough to be added to this website. After finding As I Lay Dying I waded around in that scene for awhile, until I found Crimson Thorn which began my path down Extreme metal lane.

The first ever metal bands I heard were Lordi and Dream Evil. The first extreme metal bands I heard were Amon Amarth, Behemoth and Gojira.

I'd of course heard a smattering of different metal songs before, but Metallica's "Kill 'Em All" and "Ride the Lightning" and Megadeth's "Peace Sells..." and "Rust in Peace" were probably the four albums that really piqued my interest and turned me into a true blue metal fan.

First metal bands I listed to were Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Black Sabbath, from the local library. I don't remember the first metal album I listened to that made me really interested into metal.
