SEPTEKH (Sweden) "The Seth Avalanche" CD EP review by http://www.axisofmetal.com

Image

By Fritz

Death’n’roll is one of those sounds that pull the listener in with its bouncy grooves, and strong catchy riffs. It’s simplistic in nature, and if executed with mediocrity it can be a complete disaster; and a very boring listen. Fortunately for Septekh they’ve executed this sound with precision, and coherence that will enthrall the listener throughout this six song EP!
“The Seth Avalanche” gets off on a good note with “Fucksluts From Hell” this is the perfect opener for a EP such as this. The tempo is on the faster side and has a very bouncy and groovy riff that will pull the listener in, and not let them go. This is what you want from a sound such as the one Septekh purveys.
Another great element that Septekh has incorporated in their sound is the use of varied tempos. The songs can start off at a crawling pace and then slowly build up to a faster tempo. This is executed perfectly in “Blunt Force To The Head”. This was something that also kept this one dimensional sound interesting. A lot of bands seem to like to stick to the one tempo, whether it be slower or faster, and not deviate from that.
Another element that makes death’n’roll so appealing is the use of memorable riffs. “Eating The Man Eater Master” contains one such riff. “Eating The Man Eater Master” has one of those riffs that will have all the bangers in the hall bouncing their heads along to immensely groovy riff. This was truly one thing that Septekh has mastered; the use of immensely catchy riffs and grooves.
On the vocal side of things; they are one dimensional. The vocalist sticks to his harsh burst style singing throughout the course of the EP. With a sound like this, there really is no need to have a varied vocal style. You want a vocalist who sounds big and will be able to fuse with the guitar to create an audile assault that doesn’t drown one another out. With death’n’roll you don’t want the vocals to be the focal point, instead it has to blend and add. Overall; these vocals were executed well and you’d be hard pressed to find a vocalist that could do this style any better.
As with the vocals the drums are simplistic and one dimensional and that’s exactly what you want. They are there to compliment the riffs and keep the groove bouncing along. They don’t sound weak or overpower the guitar. They are there when you need them, and really do drive the songs along. Overall executed with a true understanding of the style; well done.
Overall “The Seth Avalanche” is defiantly a formidable release that will compel you to listen over and over to Septekh’s brand of death’n’roll! Truly an enjoyable experience!

DESULTOR (Sweden) "Masters of Hate" CD review by http://www.stormbringer.at

Image

By Luka

The Swedes DESULTOR call their music "Murder Metal" (and have appropriate stage names like "Murder Mack" or "Ragnar Rage" is selected). This definition, we have time to be seen (and also that the band name DESULTOR people actually refers to the good of horses can jump down and up on horses ... not very deadly). Aside from such childish play the guys quite a typical mixture of death metal, blackened thrash metal easily and U.S. Power Metal. Mainly due to the voice of singer (and guitarist) Murder Mack associations are monitored with NEVERMORE. Mr Mack Murder seems to many of the melodic lines (ex-) singer Warrel Dane to have listened. Whose vocal power he does not quite reach, but it offers a strong performance. Aside from these pathways converts the rhythm section, which is probably more likely in Black / Thrash home. Rolling blastbeats are important here - and throughout the entire season has been raised in this regard, but a little fatigue. A little more variety would have been offered here. Despite these minor shortcomings, "Masters Of Hate" a strong, diverse album. Especially songs like "Insane Division", "The Luxury Of Pain" and "Caged" hits are from the Lord who deserves a wider audience.

FESTER (Norway) "A Celebration of Death" CD review by Battlepig

Image

By Claudia

English translation:

After believe it or not seventeen years the Norwegians FESTER release these days their longplayer “A Celebration Of Death“.
I approach the affair with mingled feelings. After all within seventeen years a lot of things happened musically. But my doubts are fast eliminated. I am confronted with a mixture of Black Metal and Doom Metal. Inbued with threnodial, darkness and endless hate here are built dense sound walls which immediately cast a spell over the listener. Riffs weighting several tons which seem to unite the burden of the whole world generate goosebumps atmosphere. A very intense album which is reinforced by the kept in the background drumming. Halting sound frameworks which build up a depressing atmosphere. Thereby the gents doesn't reproduce but find their very own way to put this atmosphere in notes and sounds. Accentuated by growls which strengthen the complete frame dark and depressive. The guys have nothing unlearnt in the course of the years! And a good thing, too!!! “A Celebration Of Death“ is a consistent continuation of the musical path of FESTER transposed in the year 2012. Highly worth hearing!!!

ETERNAL HELCARAXE (Ireland) "Against All Odds" CD review by scumfeastmetal666

Image

By SCUMFEAST METAL 666

What is lost on all those who say things like "Black Metal needs to progress in order for it to stay relevant" is that the genre already has innovative and creative individuals (past & present) who have added so much diversity. The genre is already vibrant without having to progress it out of existence. This Irish band is a perfect example since they take the influences of ENSLAVED's progressiveness and BATHORY's Viking era stylings to modern heights of epicness. Against All Odds is ETERNAL HELCARAX's debut release, they also have two short form releases as well (the To Whatever End EP from 2010 and the Palest Kingdom EP from 2008). On here the seven songs, and one lush instrumental intro, represent a perfect meeting between blackened pagan folk with washes of progressive elements via occasional use of synthesizers to add atmosphere. The cuts are melodic but carrying enough raw emotion as well as complex song structures to invoke visions of battles of old. Yeah I really like this release.

It's rare when a band can sound brutal as well as beautiful. The opening intro will fool most people into believing nothing harsh is going to happen but once through it then ETERNAL HELCARAX (who are Praetorian - guitars/vocals/keyboards, Maulgrim - guitars/vocals, Thule - bass and Tyrith - drums) blasts out like an army charging into battle. While the early parts of Against All Odds showcase more of this band's epic side like on the amazing BATHORY-esque "Claim Your Place With The Gods". The latter half exposes true war like wrath with "Shadow Of The Wolf" (an obvious favorite of mine) and admonishment to the true warrior spirit on "Echoes Through Our Blood" and the closing title cut. Everything about Against All Odds is amazing from Praetorian's harsh battle cries, the coldness of the riffs as well as the amazing drum work by Tyrith. It's a dynamic scale of harsh and atmospheric music which in the end had me wanting more. This will definitely find itself in my end of year favorites list as well as being played throughout the year.

FESTER (Norway) "A Celebration of Death" CD review by http://www.metalforcesmagazine.com

Image

By Duncan Geddes

If you’ve heard the music of Fester before, you’ll be as confused as anyone to see them releasing a new album – we’re dealing with a real buried gem here. Back in the early 1990s these Scandinavian anomalies made something that hung precariously between black and death metal, at a time when the former was all the rage and the latter was yet to settle in Norway. They bowed out to limited applause a few years later. But, as if from nowhere, founding member and guitarist Bjørn ‘Tiger’ Mathisen has brought the name back from the crypt and written a new album, and the results are an intriguing and unique listen.

The opening combination of ‘Rites Of Ceres’ and ‘The Black Tower’ sets out Mathisen’s desired sound – dark, gritty palm mutes, with atmospheric screams and outbursts of emotive harmony. As was the case in the band’s original stint, this album is carried by an individual riffing style that plugs away with simple effectiveness and refusal to commit itself to any particular genre convention – the key difference is in aggression. A Celebration Of Death rarely breaks out of middle pace, but the riffs dig deep and ensure the intensity is high at all times, thicker and more menacing than both the esoteric Silence (1994) and their 1992 debut, Winter Of Sin.

As the album rolls on Fester begin to explore a little, with the guttural rumble of ‘Metalized’ offering the album’s heaviest moments and ‘Last Day Of Battle’ going through several mood changes over a seven-and-a-half minute duration near the close of proceedings. The lo-fi, almost industrial clang of the drums provides snare stabs which are vital at times, breaking through what could otherwise be rather lethargic sequences of riffs. With clear parameters and no time for novelties, this album’s sound makes enough sense that it’ll take you until the end to realise that nobody besides Fester has really made music like A Celebration Of Death before.

This is a band that deserves to be heard, offering an eye-opening look at what extreme metal can be. To come back after almost 20 years and do this with the same unique voice, and with equal or even greater success, is incredibly impressive. It is, as they say, in the blood.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "The Seth Avalanche" CD EP review by http://www.metalblast.net

Image

By Anthony

It’s been awhile since I’ve gotten a chance to listen to something as fun as this album. Septekh‘s latest EP The Seth Avalanche is a straight up thrash album with a little black metal and punk influences thrown in for good measure; and it certainly helps add a little extra kick to an EP that was already good. Instead of your stock death metal grunts and growls, vocalist Nils Meseke sounds like he broke off a piece of glass and gargled it when he woke up in the morning, producing a sort of scratchy sound that fits in with the rest of the EP perfectly. Album opener “Fuckslut From Hell” grabs you right from the beginning and throws you onto a roller coaster ride that never stops – and that’s a good thing. The Seth Avalanche is only 20 minutes long, which means it’s incredibly easy to listen to the whole thing two or three times in one sitting before you move onto something else. This is great; some of the songs really get stuck in your head making you want to just hit the repeat button as soon as their over.
Being mostly a thrash album The Seth Avalanche is the strongest when it’s plowing full steam ahead, which certainly isn’t a problem for most of the album. There are a few sticking points however; like the beginning of “Blunt Force To The Head” which suffers through about a minute and a half of a rather monotonous slow beginning before picking back up with a much welcomed barrage of blast beats (which are nice, because they aren’t overused on this album at all). Drummer Staffan Persson absolutely tears up the drums on this album; they’re a lot of fun to listen to especially when you mentally isolate them from everything else and concentrate just on them. Plenty of crunchy riffs are also present on The Seth Avalanche; look no further then ”Shoot Them All” for some of the best riffs on the album, although from time to time some of the riffs sound a little too much alike.
Septekh‘s production on this album is great, easily one of the best things about The Seth Avalanche. The guitar tone is great, and guitarist David Wikstrom uses it to ingrain some absolutely stellar fretwork into your brain. The drums feel appropriately punchy, thankfully avoiding one of the big problems that many thrash albums have – weak drums. You can always hear them and they have a nice thump; it’s nice to see (or hear, rather) that they weren’t completely buried under the vocals and guitars. Overall it’s a very satisfying listening experience; plus everything has that great echo-y sound that only helps compliment their thrashy sound.
If you’re a fan of thrash metal at all you’ll definitely want to check out The Seth Avalanche. Septekh put out an EP that contains some seriously catchy and just great songs; I think I’ve had “Shoot Them All” and “Fuckslut From Hell” stuck in my head for about two weeks now. Yeah, seriously two weeks. It’s by no means a perfect album; but it is very good.

FESTER (Norway) "A Celebration of Death" CD review by http://www.time-for-metal.eu

Image

By Reaper

It is now whole seventeen years ago, that proof album, or let alone have a message from himself be heard. I'm more surprised that I now get to hear after all this time once again to a "new" album of the veterans. Was when I was a little boy about 14 years ago, I got over my best friend a slice of proof in hand. At the time I sank into a world I had never seen before ... and that's what I expect in today's hour of Fixed

Already in the intro my hopes are fulfilled. Even after all this time to understand Fester , it still feels wonderful to hold their audience in a spell. Rites of Ceres is gloomy, doomy and breathed a little rough, breathy voice of 'Tiger' binds. With the Black Tower I fall into an incredibly deep hole in the ground and sink completely into darkness. I was fascinated by this sound like I'm just completely resistant delivered. However, be difficult to achieve in a live show a similar result. Before you even more anticipated take of the very good album, I will express to you my general opinion.
Conclusion:
After so many years is it, as if proof never been away so long. This incredible atmosphere I've recently enjoyed with their last album. The sound is consistently excellent and for all friends of the founding fathers is a must.

THOUSAND YEAR WAR Endorsed By KrashBurn Guitars

Image

Guitarist Hiram Lohr of melodic death metallers THOUSAND YEAR WAR has recently hooked up with the makers of KrashBurn Guitars for an endorsement deal. The Redding, CA based company and Hiram are currently working together to design a custom, handmade axe built exclusively for the guitarist. For more on KrashBurn Guitars, visit http://www.krashburnguitars.com or on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/jimkrashburn.

In other THOUSAND YEAR WAR news, the band is currently working on a new EP to follow their full-length debut, Tyrants and Men, which was released last year on Abyss Records. The EP will contain six tracks, including a cover of the Misfits' "London Dungeon." All instruments and vocals have been recorded and the tracks have been turned over to Fredrik Lunneborg of Primecut Studios in Sweden, who will handle mixing and mastering duties. More details on the EP are forthcoming.

THOUSAND YEAR WAR's debut full-length, Tyrants and Men is currently available through Abyss Records.

Tyrants and Men

"Epic. Heavy. Dark." - Skull Fracturing Metal 'Zine

"Tyrants And Men is a melodic Death Metal album forged in the battle principles of AMON AMARTH, the aggressiveness of HYPOCRISY and the galloping riffs of IMMORTAL."
- Metal-Temple.com

BIOGRAPHY:

The history of Thousand Year War began in the winter of 2008 in Haines, Alaska with Hiram Lohr (guitar, vocals) developing ideas that would become the first Thousand Year War demo under the name Shadow of the Colossus. Former TYW member Kellen Sharp had joined on guitars for the EP and future full length Tyrants and Men. These four songs were recorded by Brett Wehmeyer at Runefire Recording Studios in Anchorage, AK. With the help of Brett and session drummer Mortaeus (Ax) TYW was able to get their first recording off the ground. After receiving good reviews and label interest from their self-titled EP, Thousand Year War decided to take things to the next level and record a full length album.

The EP is available for free download at http://www.thousandyearwar.com

Months after the first EP TYW went in to record with Ryan Brownell (Garden Studios). In a period of seven days they recorded vocals, guitars, and bass to found session drummer Fredrik Widigs (Angrepp, Desultor, The Ugly). After transposing all the songs to Guitar Pro they were sent to Fredrik to record the drum tracks at Prime Cut Studios (Sweden), in the summer of '09. Shortly after 10 tracks were laid down to what would become the full length Tyrants and Men

From the summer of 2010 and beyond, Fredrik Lunneborg of Primecut Studios came up with an amazing mix that sculpted and formed the final sound of Tyrants and Men. This mix was presented to Dan Ferguson of Abyss Records and Thousand Year War was offered to sign.

Kellen Sharp was removed from the band for personal reasons and Fredrik Widigs(Ex-The Ugly, Witchery-Live Drums, Ex-Angrepp) and Pablo Magallanes (Live guitarist- Demonical,Interment) was brought on for the recording of the upcoming EP Vulture Eyes The EP will feature six songs, including a cover of Misfits "London Dungeon."

ETERNAL HELCARAXE (Ireland) "Against All Odds" CD review by heavymetaltribune

Image

By Hong Rui

Having been around since 2003, this year marks the release of Irish black metal band Eternal Helcaraxe's debut full length album, with just a single demo and an EP under their belts prior to this. The amount of time the band has taken for the release of this album, and this being one of the first encounters with Irish extreme metal, certainly left me curious as to what Eternal Helcaraxe would sound like. With the Tolkien-inspired band name, it would be easy to expect this to be a folk-related release with a heroic theme.

As the album begins with Claim Your Place with the Gods, one is almost reminded of recent atmospheric black metal bands, such as those in the veins of Shroud of Despondency's recent releases, complete with the melancholic and emotional feel that has been put in place, both through the melodies and through the instrumentations that have been included on the album, though Eternal Helcaraxe does have a more epic feel with the slow build up on this opening track. As well, guitarists Praetorian and Maulgrim on tracks such as One Stand Still Here help to accentuate that heroic and somewhat viking element of the band's music, with the riffing on the track at times sounding almost like a blackened version of Amon Amarth.

Throughout the album, clean and acoustic guitars and keyboards are all fully utilised, often creating a nice soothing atmosphere, yet lurking amongst it all is a slight tinge of sadness that can be detected. The lead guitars on some tracks are melodic, and this brings about a nice contrast compared to the chaos that goes on around, and whether intentional or not, these tend to end up resulting in Eternal Helcaraxe sounding like a depressive black metal band at times, though this is certainly not a bad thing. The vocals on the album in particular help to display the constant shifting moods that occur as the album progresses complete with the usage of clean vocals at strategic moments like on As the Snow Gathers, and this is particularly enjoyable, though the gruff vocals on title track Against All Odds did sound slightly out of place, causing the track to falter slightly. Keyboards on tracks like Invictus are also charming, helping to bring out and emphasise the epic and courageous feel of the lyrics of the track. The orchestration towards the end of As the Snow Gathers is particularly rousing.

Another thing that helped to mar an otherwise flawless experience was We Assist Death, with that annoying, repetitive intro riff, sounding extremely awkward and out of place from the rest of the instruments, which fortunately lasts for only a short moment before the song begins proper. However, such awkward moments are few and easily overlooked through the consistency, the flow from song to song throughout the album and the quality of the music for the most part, making Against All Odds an extremely impressing debut release.

DISEIM (Latvia) "Holy Wrath" CD review by valkyrianmusic

Image

By Luke Hayhurst

Having been active since 2007, Diseim have had plenty of time to rehearse, perfect and record their sound. It took a little while to get their completed line up but once that was done they set about performing locally and tinkering with the bands dynamics. featuring quick paced drum beats, grinding guitars and poignant growling vocals, Diseim come armed with a dark sinister sound that has been moulded and crafted into a debut album entitled ‘Holy Wrath’. What I like about Diseim is that despite their heavy ominous sound, vast ranging breakdowns and deathly sensibilities, their vocal style is very audible and the lyrics easy to understand. indeed all of these points make their brand of blackened thrash very easy to digest and immensely catchy.
In ‘Pyromania’ you get a glimpse into the bands deepest darkest secrets, a shout out to all that is evil, brooding and sinister lurking in the darkness. Yet it is ‘Sinner’ that really pushes the boundaries of Diseims brutality and malicious nature. a slower paced track, ‘Sinner’ grinds down your senses into submission with venomous vocal work, crushing killer riffs and sledgehammer like drum beats. ‘Insanity’ is simply that, tremendously catchy and with some enormous breakdowns whilst ‘Son Of The Winter’ brings a Black Metal element into play as well as the Blackened Thrash the band usually play so well. Through the ever changeable but always grinding ‘Witch’ and into the finale of ‘Agony’, Diseim have produced eight quality blackened tracks of an evil nature and ill purpose. For a debut release this is strong, powerful and malicious, as well as being well worth your attention.

BANE WILL BURN THE ACAUSAL FIRE Posted by Pawel Palica

Serbian blackened death metal wizards BANE have finished working on their new, second studio album “The Acausal Fire”. Founding member, singer and guitarist Branislav told ZT the full-length is – surprise, surprise – their best recording thus far:
“‘The Acausal Fire’ is the follow-up to our debut album ‘Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness’. I choose to go with the same studio & producer – Honza Kapak & Hellsound Studio, Czech Republic, and I think we`ve definitely managed to create the best output yet.
On this album we`ve made a few different steps from all our previous works, some of them being the use of orchestral & symphonic parts in the songs, clean/choir vocals here and there, and this time we raised the speed bar up to 240 bpm meaning that this will without a doubt be our fastest & definitely most brutal material yet”.

“The Acausal Fire” is set for an Autumn 2012 release via US Label Abyss Records. The first single should be online within the next few weeks, while you can check out some samples of the album here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iw-VTB0e55c

ETERNAL HELCARAXE (Ireland) "Against All Odds" CD review by valkyrianmusic

Image

By Luke Hayhurst

With a stunning ambient introduction track entitled ‘Claim Your Place With The Gods’, I am already feeling very good about Eternal Helcaraxe’s debut full length release ‘Against All Odds’. Flowing nicely out of such a superb opener the album moves effortlessly into ‘One Stands Still here’, a dynamic unyielding song of epic proportions. Eternal Helcaraxe have been in existance for nine years if you can believe that, but if it takes nine years to perfect your sound to this degree then well-played boys, well-played because this is Black Metal with a real twist, including soaring harmonies, ebbing and flowing seamlessly into a crescendo of atmospheric pomp and splendour. Often viciously heavy, yet with plenty of room left for the bands frequent trips down long winding roads of melody, ‘Against All Odds’ is for lack of a better word, special!
I recently read a book about the release of Nelson Mandella and the impact it had on the Rugby World Cup, that as many will know was entitled ‘Invictus’ and was made into a major motion picture. Now I have a feeling that Eternal Helcaraxe’s song of the same name does not cover the same subject although the themes are somewhat similar in that they describe a fight, a struggle, and standing united through it all, something Mandela strived for. Anyway after that rather random interlude to my review, back to Eternal Helcaraxe. ‘We Assist Death’ is both chilling and vicious in sound throughout and gives an insight into the raw nature of Eternal Helcaraxe and the extremity that they are able to produce. As the album continues the harsher nature to the band emerges but always leaves room for their varied styles and melodies. Utilising great break downs, pace changes and even some cleaner vocals during ‘As The Snow Gathers’, Eternal Helcaraxe have created a debut album to be truly proud of. Powerful, epic, thought-provoking and deeply heavy, ‘Against All Odds’ is a masterpiece.

ETERNAL HELCARAXE (Ireland) Interview by http://www.thisisnotascene.com

Image

By Curt

Eternal Helcaraxe are an awesome fusion of black metal and melodic death metal. Their new album “Against All Odds” absolutely smokes and if you haven’t heard it, drop what you are doing and get it right now! I had the opportunity to talk to band member Praetorian and here is what he had to say:

Your new album “Against All Odds” is one of the best albums (metal or otherwise) that I have heard so far in 2012. Can you go over who you are and a bit of a band introduction for anyone who hasn’t heard of you?

Eternal Helcaraxe was first talked about in late 2004, Between then and mid 2005 we began writing for a black metal project based on raw emotion and atmosphere. After several line-up changes both founding members, Myself and Maulgrim decided to continue as a two piece and in march 2008 released the first MCD entitled “Palest Kingdom”. Shortly after this release in April of 2008 we were joined by our first drummer Tyrith, and the lineup was completed in August 2009 when were joined by Thule on bass, who both added a new level of atmosphere and intensity to our sound. Since then we’ve recorded two more releases,“To Whatever End” in April 2010 and our New album “Against All Odds”. Musically and lyrically, it was exactly what we wanted to achieve and the feedback has been great.

The album is so good, I am hard pressed to say anything negative about it. The songs are so well done, with so much emotion that I was actually stunned at times. Which tracks are you most proud of? I absolutely loved “As the Snow Gathers” and “One Stands Still Here”.

Thanks. It’s a hard one to answer because they all mean a lot to us! I think my favourite song changes from day-to-day, depending on my mood. At the moment I think it’s As the Snow Gathers”, But it was “We Assist Death” for a while there. Just love the way the song came together.

One thing that really impressed me is how you seem to meld the Swedish death metal sound (specifically Amon Amarth and early In Flames) with black metal. Was this intentional? Are you worried that the hardcore black metal fans will be pissed or do you not care?

No it wasn’t intentional at all! When we write, we only write for the song, we don’t think about any listener or anything like that, if you were to think like that you’d get nothing done. Besides most of the elite black metal people are total fucking idiots. Most didn’t get enough hugs from mommy growing up and think they’re gonna get back at the world by listening to crap under produced black metal. I have no time for them to be honest. They’re never going to re-capture the early 90′s Mayhem/Burzum/Emperor black metal so they may as well progress like the rest of the world.

I read that the band’s name came from a place in Middle Earth. How important is Tolkien and fantasy in general to the band’s music? And, why do you think so many metal bands are inspired by Tolkien?

We were all big admirers of Tolkien‘s work in the beginning of this project. The first release was based are his books more than our music these day, but with the “Epic Black metal” feel we go for, it really works. For me it’s the “Larger than life” feel that it brings.

Who are the bands musical influences?

Scandinavian Black metal was definitely a massive influence for us, bands like Emperor, Burzum, Immortal. Some other European bands like that, Ancient Rites and Amon Amarth would have also been big ones.

How do you come up with the lyrics? Is there a concept to the album at all?

The main themes for the lyrics on this album is very close to the last release: war, strength of character, having our backs to the wall but fighting anyway and standing proud beside your loved ones. A lot of the lyrics are from personal view points really, places I’ve found myself in the past few years, and the people around me that I am proud to have in my life.

A lot of metal fans (and music fans in general) seem to get scared off by black metal due to the perceived anti-social element in the genre with people such as Gaahl, Varg, Faust and others who all went to prison for serious crimes. Also there is the whole National Socialist black metal genre with racist overtones. Do you think black metal is music for the anti-social or do you think it can be used for other purposes than promoting hatred and violence?

I Don’t give a shit about this to be honest. For me black metal is about the atmosphere and feeling.I’m really not interested in all the other crap that comes with it. Most of the time for me when it comes to listening to music in general I listen to it for the song/song writing. The meaning behind it comes second.

There aren’t very many Irish Black Metal bands out there. How did you get into playing Black Metal and music in general?

We were all just big Black metal fans growing up really, so when I picked up a guitar or sat behind a keyboard it’s the music that always came out. We do pretty much all our promotion outside Ireland too so we never had any big links to the metal genre’s here. It would be a waste of time anyway cause Irish people don’t really support their own bands.

What albums have you been listening to lately?

The bands I been listening are 40 Watt Sun, Austere, Shining, Sigrblot, Warning, Altar Of Plagues, Hammers Of Misfortune, Wolves In The Throne Room, Thunderbolt & Gospel of The Horns.

What’s the bands plans to promote “Against All Odds?”

Abyss Records and Clawhammer PR have been doing an amazing job to promote our music, I have nothing but good things to say about this Label.

How are you able to keep the band going with illegal downloading rampant all over the world? Do you foresee being able to recoup the costs of the album at least?

Well, Abyss Records has put so much time and effort into us, and we’ve put so much time into our music it would be nice to see it worth our while. But it wasn’t the reason why I started writing/playing music: We’re just enjoying were we are now and when it becomes a problem we’ll think about it then.

What are the future plans for the band? Any touring plans or anything?

No touring planned at the moment, broke my collar-bone a few month’s back and I’m just waiting for it to heal. But a lot of other things are going on at the moment. We’re pretty busy with the new release coming out, getting the new T-shirt designs ready, website redone etc. . . A Tape Version of our 2010 EP ‘To Whatever End’ will be released in April by ‘Sword Productions’ from Portugal, and we’re talking to a few labels about releasing ‘To Whatever End’ on CD later on in the year, not going to announce names of the labels until everything is signed and ready to go.

THOUSAND YEAR WAR (U.S.) "Tyrants and Men" DIGI CD review by http://www.skullsnbones.com

Image

By Luther Lazaretto

Melodic Death Metal band Thousand Year War reaches out from the cold lands of Haines, Alaska to deliver a most exciting release "Tyrants and Men" to the metal world. From the start of this release the band unleash some angry riffs that just pummel you throughout the tracks. The anger at society and the political crruption seem to bring out the passion and crunching metal from Thousand Year War. Elements of early style thrash metal and even death metal stand out in influence. There is also that modern touch with the good production behind it that makes Thouisand Year War a great band to get into. Fans of Hatesphere or Detonation can relate to this band very easily. The emotion of head stomping anger is all over "Tyrants and Men" and nothing stops until the end. Sure there are a lot of bands playing the same style and manner as Thousand Year War, but the way these guys play brings out the likeness for me, and I like how they sound. Maybe this isn't the most original release, but the band can play their style very fucking well! Nothing about this release is boring at all, everything from each track makes a person want to go outside and kick sombody's ass! There are ten tracks totaling 40 minutes of Melodic tyranny and fans of the Melodic Death metal genre should enjoy this release very much. All the tracks are worthy of listen, but a couple did catch my attention like "Defiance" and "Open Casket" (not the Death song in 1988 from "Leprosy") Each track has a hard hitting metal madness with speed and ability. A great band to get into for the fans.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) Interview by beyondmetal

Image

By Glibert V

Staffan Persson Septekh drummer eager and dynamic answered our questionnaire for From Beyond Metal Fanzine, a Norwegian attracted us for good music and visual concept and way of seeing things augur well for the future of these Scandinavians coming to edit your full legth with Abyss Records label you bet on them again

-FBM: In your note you are categorized as a death-thrash band, I agree but also taking influences from death n 'roll too, do tell us of that?

Well, we've always had a very rhythmic style and frenetic. It's metal, of course, but our style of play is a bit looser, perhaps, that only a band strict technical Death Metal. This is something that just happens to be more than we do, rather than trying to meet some kind of death / thrash / black / doom style n'roll. I do not even know what that means. The only band that I can think of when listening to rock n roll 'add-on is the style of the Swedish band The Crown, which I liked. I sounded like a metal version of something like The Hellacopters!

And that's probably influences are rock bands that we're facing. The Hellacopters and Motorhead are two of the favorite styles of Dave, really is a blues guitarist trying (sometimes struggling) to play metal haha! So is this and our biggest influences are classic metal bands like Maiden, Priest etc.. The Who also has roots closer to the rock, is a great inspiration. Also, my drumming style is influenced by two metal drummers are sprayed and (in an elegant way), just attack them with relentless force, as Frost and stiffer oriented not blasting rock drummers like Jimmy Chamberlin, for example.

So the combination of these things is probably the reason why we are on the side a bit more rhythmic.

-FBM: Let us know of his latest production discográfica.Sí, our last record is the recently released EP "The Seth Avalanche" and edited by Abyss Records!

We also have another version ready that contains four songs really strong. Hopefully later this year. And we are preparing to record a full legth this summer. Twelve or more tracks. So far on the horizon!

-FBM: We can talk a little of their former grabaciones.

Sólo have our demo recording from 2009.

-FBM: Why do not they decided to record an LP instead of ep?

Eeehhh ... Yes ... This EP is pretty long right? O? I think it's in the middle between the maximum time to be an ep, and short fucking scam lp! (ED: not referring to a hoax) Everything is so different now anyway, when the physical is actually the alpha form. We just recorded the songs you could manage to play, he stops time and I really liked in general. It ended up being available tracks for "The Avalanche Seth." Nothing more than that!

-FBM: For now, how has been the dissemination and promotion of Septekh with Abyss Records? , How was the interest of the seal to Septekh?

The spread (I had to look it up in google the word!), (Ed: Note that there was a grammatical confusion to ask the question) so far has been pretty good. We are still in the middle of all that is a bit early to say. Mr. Ferguson seems to be a very passionate, congratulations to him for that! Hopefully the video can help a little to inspire people to judge by the loyalty of our label.

-FBM: How was the process of production and recording of his music video "Shoot Them All?"

We shot the video for "Shoot Them All" in our rehearsal room on the island of Mork. Everything was very low fidelity. Not There are luxury houses, the lights did ourselves, so we invited some friends and friends of friends, and played the song (live, not playing!) A couple of times and got drunk together. I think it turned out great!

-FBM: In the "eaten the necessary" is where most leave their influence death n 'roll, which does tell us about the lyrics and the song in general?

Hmmm. I guess you mean "eaten the necessary"? Just let the song flowed naturally all the time. I've never been this far in the boogie woogie territory before and probably never will again hehe ... The lyrics are a mixture sex, serial murders and some sort of sharp humor, I think that ...

-FBM: It is about the time of the summer festivals throughout Europe, are there confirmed dates?

Well what are the plans Septekh're going to play a few shows. No festivals confirmed yet. And as noted above, we will enter the studio in a couple of months! Stay tuned for our audio offerings have begun to take cabo.-FBM: We can discuss a little known South American metal?

(I had to check what boogie woogie sounds really good and now I'm listening to some really frantic piano. Mein Gott!) (ED: ha ha ha ha think the coach got a bit hectic and I am enamored with the boogie, boogie ...)

The first thing that pops into my head is the song of the powerful Aura Noir "" South American Death "" which is a tribute to the South American metal scene and I know there a particular legacy of metal from there with bands of historical importance as Sarcofago for example. Although the only band that actually has some memory in my Sepultura and is still maintained.

I have heard many good things about the scene there and I really want you to come here to play more!. Actually, it was the vocalist of a band called Madness Chile was invited as a guest and working for us. His voice sounds like a pile of rubble or a truck truck ... Indeed unique. This was a few days checking myspace and then never heard from them so ... siguiéremos waiting lol!

-FBM: Farewell Final

Saludos all!!

ETERNAL HELCARAXE (Ireland) "Against All Odds" CD review by misantropiaextrema

Image

By misantropiaextrema

With a storyboard and edited an EP in 2008 and 2010 respectively, the Eternal Helcaraxe aperfilavam as one of the great hopes of the Irish metal even before their debut album. "Against All Odds" solves this problem and give substance to the signs left on the short-term group Cavan. The early introduction of acoustic and melodic as well as issues such as the epic "Invictus," immediately put at the forefront of the inevitable comparisons with compatriots Primordial, but the similarities do not stop there. The character heathen and pagan black metal group is also comparable to the band's best known in Ireland, but later joined the Eternal Helcaraxe a recipe keyboards that give his music a more atmospheric, as well as the spaces, rock influences' and roll on the work of riffs reminiscent of the last album of Norwegian Keep Of Kalessin. With revenues of these Irish band can obviously be of interest to those with pagan black metal music in your diet. The group comprises long themes and fill them with different parts, all more or less interesting because of a sense of structure and refined attention to detail that this band should make a serious case of the European scene, and "Against All Odds' get attention deserving.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "The Seth Avalanche" CD EP review by heavymetaltribune

Image

By Hong Rui

Death/thrash metal is a genre that has a large spectrum for me, with one end containing the brutal and bestial style originated by pioneers such as Sarcofago, and the other end being the more ballsy, old-school heavy metal style that Japanese bands like Sabbat and Abigail prefer to play in. Fortunately, both styles happen to be stuff that I enjoy from time to time, and Septekh's new EP, The Seth Avalanche certainly captivates, with the running coyote theme that is present on the album artwork.

One might get the hint from the song titles on the album, with the likes of Fuckslut from Hell, that this album would probably lean more towards the perverted, drunken style of Abigail, but what Septekh presents on the album is more of a middle-ground between the two extremes. The riffs on songs like Fuckslut from Hell are ballsy and groovy as hell, and gives The Seth Avalanche a nice old-school, rock 'n' roll vibe that lasts throughout the release. Nils barks out his vocals with rage, at times alternating to more simple gruff growls and this helps provide and reinforce that anger in the music, while drummer Staffan gives a nice crusty feel to the music with his d-beat drumming style.

For the most part, the music on The Seth Avalanche is simple, and Septekh does not come across as overly zealous in displaying their technical flair, though guitarist David does litter the album with bits of flamboyance with his shredding. Songs like Shoot Them All are simple, straightforward thrash numbers, and at times almost reminds one of early Exodus stuff, though Septekh does so in a more simple manner and injects rock 'n' roll vibe with the lead guitar work of David. Not Quite What I Had in Mind also presents a slower, heavier side of the band as well, though the band never fails to put in that groovy element in the music, ensuring that the song is still recognisable as the band's. The short run time of songs like Shoot Them All and Eating the Maneater ensure that listeners with ADD won't run out of patience before having their face melted by the fury and anger of the band.

The Seth Avalanche is an extremely fun record, and I have to admit Septekh caught me off-guard with this EP. Also, it is certainly nice to hear a Swedish band not play their usual style of Swedish death metal for once, and The Seth Avalanche is hence a nice breath of fresh air.

DESULTOR (Sweden) "Masters of Hate" CD review by http://www.avenoctum.com

Image

By Andrew Doherty

Thrash metal is what Sweden’s Desultor are about. It’s clear from listening to “Masters of Hate”, their debut album that they don’t believe in messing about. Non-stop and like a whirlwind, it is also rich in technicality.
The spooky, extra-terrestrial opening soon turns to rapid-fire thrash with triggering drums before taking stock and without losing momentum, rumbling through a guitar solo. This is “Black Monday”. Our attention is captured. The fast and furious tempo is maintained on “Another World”. The expansive, supernatural vocals sound uncannily like Nevermore’s Warrel Dane. More triggering drums provide the drill for this emerging well of progressive thrash metal. It’s progressive just as I like it – heavy and deep-veined. It refuses to stand still. Controlled, lively and breathless, the epic drama thrashes its way into the ever lofty and colourful “Denied”. The “Nevermore vocals” – they’re so similar as to be modelled on them, not that this a criticism – work well which this music which thunders melodically and brutally like a burning funeral pyre. It’s like a riot zone with alarms out there and there’s danger everywhere, but it’s equally tight and epic.
We get a little breather on “Chapter 2: The Phoenix” – not sure why, really. It moves in a sinister and suggestively industrial way but only as a prelude to the screams and battery of “And So We Bleed…”. Majesty is once again evident in those vocals which accompany the furious wall of drum and guitar lines. There is a smooth transition into lush guitar work, followed by more violent hammering. “The Luxury of Pain” mirrors what has gone before – thunder, heaviness, passionate vocals, a sublime guitar solo, and subtle changes of mood and pace, but only between fast and faster. The gripping “Caged” sets us up for one last battle, the title track. “Masters of Hate” is as highly-charged as ever but by virtue of its chorus the most cheesy on an album which maintains the principle of taking us direct to the heart of the matter.
This breathtaking journey seems to be over very quickly. It becomes a little predictable perhaps but I’d rather they do this than something they’re not good at or something which destroys the ambiance. In any case, the tracks are colourful. They contain a multitude of elements but are well-rounded. “Masters of Hate” is big but not flashy. There’s no compromise to the brutality but heads rise above the thrashing parapet and there’s subtlety in the riffs. So the constituent parts which make up this amalgam of styles are not unusual but I can only describe the progressive thrash metal which is offered up here as exhilarating. I like it.

FESTER (Norway) "A Celebration of Death" CD review by http://www.metalhead.it

Image

By Alberto Vitale

I realized Fester "Silence" in 1994, so many years have passed before the band resurfaces alive with a new album. The band once again the staff blackened death metal, made of death, thrash and black metal, through this "A Celebration of Death", whose cover is Eliran Kantor (Testament, Sodom, Atheist, Sigh, Anacrusis). The album is wrapped in a dark environment, suffered, but always ready to merge multiple situations and elements. The show pieces like "I'll Hunt You Down" and "March of Death", with distortion, and electronic nightmare scenarios. "JEG Spytter Deg Pa" offers the most dynamic riffs and rhythms as is the case for "Last Day of Battle pt 2". The duration is of the songs is supported, The candidates makes a parade where they cripple and mix sounds together. Just The candidates, however, is also liable for conditions that tend to repeat themselves, straying into already heard. In fact, among the best things about the album is "A Face for a Funeral", a song short and overloaded with decorative and electronic distortions. "A Celebration of Death" is still a job that involves carrying and because it has its own character and atmosphere full of emotions. Bakker, Andersen and Mathisen again resume their own style and mix multiple items and ideas in their songs, while taking advantage of the aid of several additional musicians.

DESULTOR (Sweden) "Masters of Hate" CD review by http://www.metalhead.it

Image

By Alberto Vitale

They are Swedish and are published by the American label. I am Swedish and have only two, the guitarist and singer Markus and drummer Michael Ibrahim Joha. I am Swedish and until now had only made two demos. I am Swedish and have not only this. The Desultor have played an album of progressive death metal, where the violent brutality is typical Swedish tendency to know how to put songs in the ocean of nastiness. Besides, there is also a good dose of pathos, especially in the voice (and clean vocals) of Joha reminiscent of Warrel Dane of Nevermore. The songs are Desultor violence, chaos and high-sounding melodies that elevate each piece to incredible and this is because of the vocals, guitar solos and the various steps and changes that each carries within itself. Every single song is a scene of unprecedented power, as well of unbelievable beauty. Each song is an amazing metamorphosis of steps and wisely managed by swirling guitars (the ranges in thrash riffing, in the death metal solutions in Scandinavian and American) and a drumming perfect (pity about the sound too compressed). They are damn good and Ibrahim Joha and "Master of Hate" is a compendium of death metal, progressive and an endless pursuit of melodies and atmospheres that capture from start to finish. Also the songs survive on an average minutaggio 3 'and a half, this means to assimilate the pieces with ease, because they come to the point. wonderful!

DISEIM (Latvia) "Holy Wrath" CD review by http://www.scratchthesurface-webzine.com

Image

By Curt

I liked "Holy Wrath" way more than I should have. When I saw that the band was described as "old school sludge/death metal from Latvia" I thought that the album was going to be a painful experience to get through. Then when opening track "Black" came on and had some weird laughing snarling thing going on, I was sure the album was going to be horrible.
A funny thing happened though: The album got good. I don't mean like album of the year good, but good as in I want to listen to this album again and not delete it off my hard drive after reviewing it good.

After the first initial annoying minute with "Black" the song turned into a pretty decent, catchy song-Not incredibly fast but a good mid-paced opener that had me enjoying the song. The next song, title track "Holy Wrath" continued this trend of a nice catchy song with some really good vocals that crossed between the traditional death growls and more screechy black metal type vocals at time. The band has a good grasp of songwriting as well and I can see them doing quite well in the future with a couple more albums under their belt.
Highlight tracks of the album are "Witch", "Back" and "Holy Wrath". Check the band out and then pick the album up. I would love to see these guys make another album as this one was quite impressive.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "The Seth Avalanche" CD EP review by cosmosgaming

Image

By Chris Dahlberg

After releasing a demo and an EP independently, Swedish death ‘n roll/thrash metal band Septekh has signed with Abyss Records and re-recorded their EP under the title The Seth Avalanche. When a band has song titles such as “Fuckslut from Hell”, it is pretty safe to assume that this is going to be over the top material and that’s exactly what these guys bring to the table. It may not quite have the staying power that some of the more established death ‘n roll acts have, but there’s a lot of things that Septekh does right and they have definite potential.
Rather than going for straight groove for six songs straight, the instrumentalists spend a decent amount of time heading into thrash territory with some fast and blistering riffs. This does help the songs to feel different from one another, as one minute they’ve settled into a Motorhead style groove while the next they sound like an old school thrash band. It also helps that the production is well suited to both of these styles, as it has a raw feel while still giving the instrumentals and vocals enough room to breathe. However, despite the fact that Septekh has both of these styles down their riffs don’t always have enough of a lasting impact which makes it hard to remember specific tracks. The one notable exception is “Eating the Maneater” which offers a catchy as hell blues driven riff, but this is one area that the group needs to take a leap forward in to take the next step forward.

The vocals definitely fall into the over the top category, as the band’s singer has a distorted shriek/growl that has a fairly high pitch and is also enunciated well enough to make all of the lyrical content. Combine this with the fact that you can understand the entirety of songs such as the aforementioned “Eating the Maneater” and you have an album with content that is quite absurd and therefore memorable. Admittedly this type of barked/shrieked vocals are a bit of an acquired taste and they do sometimes overpower the instrumental arrangements but from my point of view that helped the group to be a bit more distinguishable from some of the others of this style.

It may not have the staying power needed to become a must listen to EP, but Septekh is on the right track and there are still a few songs that are quite catchy. With a little push forward in the songwriting department and a further combination of the groove heavy death ‘n roll and fast paced thrash I think this group could really impress. I’ll be waiting to see if that happens, and in the meantime The Seth Avalanche is likely to still warrant a few more spins.

DESULTOR (Sweden) Interview by battlehelm

Image

By Anders Ekdahl

DESULTOR from Stockholm, Sweden should not be confused with Desultory from Stockholm, Sweden. Musically you’ll never get these two acts confused. The one without an Y s extreme metal in the widest of its meaning. Anders Ekdahl ©2012

The first thing I thought when I saw your band name was that somebody spelt the name Desultory wrong. Why chose a band name that could that easily be mistaken for another band, still active?

- Because we didn’t know they existed and we still don’t care. We have asked them to play with us, so that the audience will be more confused.

What do you call your music and what is the major influence? Is there anything in particular that shaped the sound?

- Extreme metal. Because we take metal to the extreme. We don’t have any specific major influence, we are inspired by a lot of music. The major influence would be to create own stuff and not copy anyone else. Create your own scales and do your own awesome melodies, we recommend it!

You seem to be a two-piece. Is that a drum machine we hear or is the drummer that precise in real life? Is it easier being just two in a band?

- Yes, he is absolutely human. He plays that in his sleep, you should see him when he plays the “really” technical stuffs.
– We think so, yes. We think similar and every process just runs much smoother in every area.

What limitations are there to just being two in a band? Anything that you want to do but can’t?

- Only money but besides that, none. When we work with music it goes exactly how we want it. We love to play everything that has to do with the simplicity in the music as well the very complex. And a lot of musicians doesn’t think like that in metal any more these days, they are all traditional players. Mikael Ibrahim is the only person I know who can think outside the box like I do when it comes to playing metal. And that´s how we want it.

I must admit that you are a blank card to me. What’s the history of the band? What have you done before Desultor?

- Well we are kind of new in the business, this is our debut album you know. We have struggled among like all the other billion metal bands out there. We have played mostly in traditional metal bands both of us before Desultor. Ibrahim and I met for the first time 4 years ago when we played together in Goatsodomizer. At that time we where both session musicians and we kind of still are. We both happened to end up on the same gigs and tours all the time and play in the same bands so we kind of built up a lot of routine and chemistry between us. And when we write our own music and not play by others music we kind of feel like we can do whatever we want without any rules. And by that inspiration to each other we kind of built up Desultor what it is today. We have sacrificed a lot of time and money to turn down tours and music jobs in the business. We still work as session sometimes when we need some extra dollars to pay the bills. But that´s why it took us so long to release our debut album because it took us to pay the studio like two years of hard work. The album was finished already in 2011. What we play today is a whole another story. This is our debut album we have just released and we are very happy people seems to enjoy it. But we have more routine now on the new stuff and with the same hunger and fire like before. So it´s gonna be awesome to show you guys the new stuff as soon as we get some money from gigs and tours and maybe some from the album so that we can go back to studio and record again.

What intentions do you have for the band now that there is an album out? How serious is this to you?

- This is what we live for and have fought for. This is our dream. Our goal is that to some day to make a living on the music so that we can spend all our time and money on the music we love to play most, Desultor. That´s how serious this is to us.

How do you best make a name for yourself? Do you just let the music do the talking and trust it to be enough?

- Yes. When the word spreads around is the best and genuine PR you can get. We rather have few hardcore fans than a lot of brainwashed fans by the media. This our little secret how good this music is. The journalists are all about the finesse and structures in music and compares us to all kind of crazy artists and genres and we have no idea what they are talking about most of the times. But the fans are just glad they got something to headbang for. Some of them have said it feels like they have gone to headbanging heaven hahahaha! There is no finesse to our music, we just love to play what sounds good. It´s that simple.

I am pretty impressed with the album “Master Of Hate”. It reminds me of a harder and faster version of Oxiplegatz. How hard was it to come up with the stuff that makes up the album? What kind ofvision did you have for the album?

– It´s “Masters of Hate”. I don´t know why alot of people miss that… The vision for the album was to have the clean song to all the music me and Mikael comes up with when we are jaming. We have written like 30 songs for the album so we picked just some of the best of them and started to play with them and it was just plain fun and not hard at all to do it.

What is the hardest part; writing music or lyrics? How do you make the lyrics fit the music?

- Well, I don’t know. I don’t see anything hard or struggling with both parts, I see them as hobbies which I like to play with. And I think that´s why everything fits so well, because you can hear there is passion and it´s genuine. I think that´s why a lot of people appreciate it.

What kind of future do you envision for Desultor?

- Big stage arenas with a lot of party going on backstage and after parties and have a really great time with the band and play great music we love to do. And just everything that comes around the band is just we want to do. That´s our dream.

NOCTIS IMPERIUM (Venezuela) "Nihil" CD EP review by autothrall

Image

By autothrall

Primal, precision punishment

Despite the proliferation of underground acts that have sprung up in the past 20 years, Venezuela has yet to deliver a knockout blow in the metal world, and for that reason, Noctis Imperium is rather exciting, since they represent a strong possibility for success. Nihil is their third EP release in the past few years, and they've yet to commit to a full-length recording, but they've raised the ante and their visibility by wisely going back to the studio and re-recording some of their best material with international drum mercenary Nicholas Barker, who has performed with high profile black, thrash and death metal acts like Cradle of Filth, Old Man's Child, Dimmu Borgir, Anaal Nathrakh, Testament, Benediction, and more.

What the Venezuelans blaspheme across this 30 minute release is a series of taut, extreme black and death metal that uses pinpoint accuracy, evil streams of fibrous, melodic guitars, and a higher level of musicianship than the average act of this type: calculated through solid bass lines and sweet brushes of lead that can effortlessly cycle through arpeggios. Though the band is not a pure black metal outfit, at times they remind me of the more modern releases from Swedish giants Dark Funeral, who also practice this form of percussive, fast as a prize horse style which almost never falls out of a gallop or blitzkrieg. Beyond that, they've got a lot in common with Deicide and Morbid Angel, who must have been pretty big influences as the band were coming up. The vocals are a mix of your standard barked rasp and a more ritual take with multiple voices used in a more conversational tone, and are not a highlight of this recording, and the dearth of new material might be a turn off by some, but I'm sure the band would prefer to consider this the first 'real' effort since they've got Barker's enormous experience to back them up.

The EP contains an intro that the band have used before on both prior EPs, called "Ra-hoor-khuit", which is a simple swell of dark ambiance that hovers among the din of South American jungle mists. "Descensus ad Inferos", which had appeared on last year's Imperium EP, tears up the listener with its insane blast-work, atmospheric flourishes and striking if brief leads, as much occult death as black metal. "Bring Me Sacrifice" has also appeared on both the band's previous EP format releases, but stands out for good bass lines and uncompromising attitude, even if the actual guitar riffs swerve from blood-thirsty promise to forgetful familiarity ala Dark Funeral.

The band's namesake "Noctis Imperium" has also been recalculated for this, a pretty standard slab of forward propulsion which doesn't standout among its neighbors, and "Unus in Nihil", which takes a lot more room to breathe in, using slower rhythms and vaulted clean vocals to its benefit as one of the most immersion-heavy tracks here. Rounding out the short form release are a cover of Morbid Angel's "Maze of Torment", both loyal and worthwhile, as well as a live version of this same song, and "Through the Fire and Cosmos" from the band's Evil Philosophies EP. The live cuts probably feature another drummer, but he's not bad himself, accurately delivering the blasts and double bass that the songs bolster. They sound decent, though they're never really a highlight on any recording such as this.

Nihil is a strong selling point for the band to pick up attention from both fans of the incessant black/death tirade and the labels and distribution that Abyss Records offers excellent visibility towards. Clearly the concern was not to craft new material, but to polish up primarily preexisting songs, structure them with Barker's insanely accurate drumming, tack on some added value that proves the band sound just as tight on a stage, and see what gears would turn. I don't feel like Noctis Imperium are quite on the level yet as far as writing songs that call out to my attention. They are not exactly the best of riff writers, and the means through which the songs flow from one barrage to the next do not entirely impress, allowing the atmospheric segments to stand out more than they might otherwise. But there is no doubt that their precision and unforgiving speed will win them the heart of many black/death heartthrobs seeking the next big thing, and this EP should gauge their position, a step forward along the cobbled path of gruesome execution.

DESULTOR (Sweden) "Masters of Hate" CD review by yathblog

Image

By Yath

Over the past couple of years, Abyss Records have become one of Metal’s best underground suppliers of new bands. You know, the kind of label that will make you discover unknown and interesting acts, no matter how much time you spend on reading underground 'zines. And as people seem to be fighting globalization, one must admit that in this particular case, it’s a blessing. What a pleasure to discover a new Stockholm-based band on an American label!
And obviously the pleasure is even more intense as Desultor are a very promising band. There are 2 guys presented as “permanent” band members here: Markus Joha handles guitars and vocals and Michael Ibrahim takes care of the drums. They describe their music as “Murder Metal”. Could someone please tell them that this label is already used by Macabre – the US funny -but not so good- Death Metal band??!!
Anyways, forget about the damn labels, since describing Desultor’s Metal is one nasty challenge. I often like to look around the web and read reviews for records I listen to; especially when a band is that difficult to characterize, I like to read about other reviewers opinions.
In their case, Desultor are mostly described as prog’ or technical Death/Thrash Metal. Why not? The thing is, although they seem to be a pretty technical band, their songs are very catchy and built on a very “classic” extreme metal scheme. The best way to describe them is probably to mention 2 other bands: Nevermore and Into Eternity. From Nevermore, take the vocals; as they really remind me of Warrel Dane's style. There’s this intensity and the constant melancholy in the clear singing, and even though Markus doesn’t have Warrel Dane’s untouchable talent, he does a really great job transmitting dark emotions. They big “chunky” riffs also reminded me of Nevermore but the Extreme Metal (meaning very fast riffing and drums) mixed with the melodic singing; has to be credited to Into Eternity, one of the first bands, if not the very first one, to use clean and high-pitched vocals on insane blast-beats.
However, make no mistake, this very young band has it’s own personality, and definitely displays a huge ambition and talent. There influences may seem obvious, but they really don’t sound like any of the bands cited above.
Masters Of Hate is a brilliant first record from a band that sure is going to shine in the near future. I’m not sure you understood what the music REALLY sounds like, which is a good thing, because it shows how original Desultor are. The best way to discover these guys and to fall for their charm is to click on this link: http://www.reverbnation.com/desultor and to listen to some songs online.

[b]DIE HARD (Sweden) "Evil Always Return" CD review by Phuling

Image

By Phuling

I’d never heard of Die Hard before, probably ‘cause I’m generally not a fan of the death/thrash metal style. Evil always return is an older recording, well not that old; it’s from 2008, but they’ve released two EPs and a fullength afterwards. When they recorded this one they had the drummer from Watain in the band, and nowadays they’ve got the guitarist from Ondskapt and Valkyrja. So it’s obvious they’re no newcomers when it comes to peddling metal, but I was still skeptic towards the chosen style.

Fortunately this is nothing like the polished, melodic death/thrash thingie that oh-so-many half-arsed acts have peddled after the success of At the Gates; this predates all of it. Predominately thrash metal, infused with a buttload of old school death metal, it blends together so well you can’t imagine thrash metal to ever have sounded any different. Venom, Slayer and Possessed have probably been put under a microscope to create Die Hard’s sound, flavoured with a touch of Sodom. It’s 80ies thrash metal all the way, and damn it they really make it work. Evil always return isn’t a throwback to the old day, it’s as old school as old school gets, the world simply never made it to the 90ies. The tempo changes, going from somewhat blasting at times to slower chugging is always right on the money, and the gnarly squealing vocals that occasionally take over are oh-so-sweet.

With energetic riffing, catchy guitar leads, the evilest of vocals and varied drumming Die Hard induces hallucinations of sweaty moshpits filled with adolescent men who just discovered the new sensation of thrash metal. They manage to convince even me, and I generally despise thrash for its sloppiness. But this is slickly performed, skillfully written and above all else utterly kick-ass. I don’t know what else to say, there really isn’t anything else to be said. I don’t know how they did it, but they manage to sound so true to the old sound they could easily have convinced me it was in fact recorded back in the days.
