Ive been using my brothers old ipod for a few years now but its starting to tweak more and more, but before I run out and buy a new one I was just wondering if there was any other good mp3 players that can hold a large amount of files.(15GB or more)

Also, my brother currently has a Zune but he says he hates the software it uses and it runs very slow so I'm not getting one of those.

I have a 16GB Sony Walkman S series mp3 player and it is more than perfect for me, and what you're looking for too.

I use an Android phone as my portable music player. I sold my iPod because I hate the iTunes software and didn't really like the hardware much.

Does it have any software that needs to be installed to the computer or do you just drop the files onto it?

Stupid post to a decent, albeit done often, subject.

I'm a fan of the ipod classic myself, even if I have some problems with it on my ubuntu laptop. I'm hearing good things about Archos, might switch soon.

Yeah, I'm fine with the ipod as is but I'm worried that if I get a new one it will fore me to download a bunch of useless software, that why I'm looking for an alternative. I haven't herd of Archos, I will check it out.

I have seen lots of Sony recommendations from all the topics i've seen here. I sadly use an Ipod...I hate Apple :(

Nope, just drag n' drop.

Archos is decent from what I've heard, but the thing's virtually a brick in your pocket. Then again, it's really the only viable alternative in terms of high capacity media players (lol, there's always Zune ). Prices aren't that bad either from I know. Usually between $300-$500 on eBay. Depending on the model.

EDIT - Here's a link for all the features and shit for the 500GB model

Sansa Clip+, best mp3 player around, you can install the Rockbox firmware to make it more customizable and awesome and you can expand it up to 64gb with a MicroSD.

Sony seems to definitely be where it's at - I've got a 32gb touch-screen one (the name escapes me) which has seen me through a good three years, because unlike the works of Apple, they don't break every fourteen-seconds. There's nothing fancy, you just put music on it, and it plays it, freeing me from the tyranny of Itunes.

I'm currently saving up for a 64gb one of a similar design, so I don't have to make the choice of what music to put on it.

I mostly listen to music using my Iphone since I've got a Spotify premium membership, but I also have a Creative Zen 8GB touch mp3 player which works awesomely :)

There exists a MP3 player with a micro SD slot in it to expand memory. I'd recommend getting one of those, from what I recall they're pretty cheap, I use an iPod myself though. It works OK but Apple are assholes so I wouldn't recommend buying anything from them.

Classics aren't that bad. I have yet to go through any problems with it in the 2 years I've had it. As for software, I could care less. iTunes is a syncing tool for me, nothing more.

For the past 6 years, I've gone through 2 Zunes; 5 years with a 30GB one, and just under a year with a 120GB one.

Make of that what you will.

I had a 120GB Zune before my Classic. Lasted about the same amount of time, then the battery took a shit and died completely.

I strongly believe that this is all because of the growing trend of companies building products with planned obsolescence so we as consummers have to buy again.

Yeah this, seriously. I had one iPod die but that was due to shit luck (me dropping it on concrete a few times too often), since then I've had this same 120gb Classic for like seven years or so and it's had precisely zero problems. Same with iTunes, no problems with it ever. The only alternative I have any experience with is Zune and I found it cumbersome and unnecessary when the ubiquitous iPod works just fine. Unless it's just a price thing, I've never recommended anything other.

I should also point out that I'm a stereotypical Apple hater too, iPods are just that good.

My 80 gb recently died, so now I am stuck with my girlfriend's pink one. Try listening to Gorgoroth while knowing your using a pink 8gb, you feel like less of a man.

I second the Sansa Clip+, from testimony. I had a Sanza Fuze (the original), and it did fine. The only thing was videos had to be converted to a special .avi format. I don't know how this is on the Fuze+, though.

I currently have an Ipod Touch (sigh). I would suggest a Sansa product if you just need something to suffice, or if you want to go for something high-grade (from testimony), go for a Cowon (like I will).

I use a Cowon X7. 160GB of storage and Cowon is known for having the best-sounding MP3 players out there. Also the battery is god-like. I've gone weeks of daily listening only to find the battery half-way drained.

Downside is that it's a bit bulky since it is HDD-based. Still fits in a pocket though. Lots of user reviews also mention that it's unreliable as shit and prone to bricking, which made me hesitant in purchasing it, but I haven't had any issues.

Don't use a portable MP3 player, myself, but I bought my friend a nice Sony one a while back and she says it's been excellent. It was one of the more high-end models that also plays video, but I don't recall which one. Seems they've already had a recommendation in here though and make good products.

I was disappointed with the RCA player my girl got. It has an annoying touch screen and the volume spontaneously alters! I thought they made good audio products, too, but apparently it doesn't apply here.

A lot of media players have terrible UI's. My Sansa Fuze needed a firmware update before it worked quite right, and even after that it had a few glitches. I suppose that in a few firmware updates, that should be remedied on your RCA.

Get the Sansa Clip+. It's cheap, small, and durable. You can Rockbox it and the sound it outputs sounds phenomenal, much better than the Ipod and Zune. You can use as many micro sd cards as you want, and you can use up to a 32gb micro sd card. A rather interesting choice to consider.

I had that one for a week. I first had the zune hd 32gb, but wanted more memory, so I got the 80gb, mainly cause of the price. They were actually very different and it didnt sound nearly as good. Half the music wouldnt even sync. I ended up returning it and getting the 64gb zune, which Im really happy with. Every now and then, like once a month, it locks up, but I just hold the button down, where it turns back on.

I have a 120 GB Zune and I am fearful of the day I must replace it. It's held out for a long time, longer than any other MP3 player I have (although I have a Sansa 8 GB that I only stopped using because I got a Zune, it still works and would serve as a decent back up if I can find the fuggin' charger for it)

I despise iTunes. My nephew has an iPod and wanted me to put some of my metal on it and I had to install iTunes on my PC, which crashed every five minutes. So as soon as putting Gwar, Goatwhore and Satan's Almighty Penis on it along with as much brutal shit as possible onto his MP3 player I removed iTunes from my system.

It's truly a shame that Zunes are no longer made. I hope Microsoft releases another Zune or at least continues making some models because it is still a solid device.

Got to have a look at this Archon but if it's heavier than the Zune it'll be a no-go. Still, 500 GB? Sounds big enough to almost fit my entire music collection... but are there devices that are NOT an iPod that hold more than 80 GB of music out there?

The MicroSD slot is awesome. Depending on where you live, MicroSD cards are pretty cheap (16gb for $9 in the states) and you can just add more when you need too.

Growing trend? I think I can hear Harley Earl in the corner of a cigarette-smoke-filled 1950s auto design studio, laughing his ass off. Planned obsolescence is an old, old, old marketing technique.

Oh I know, but we've been seeing it more and more in electronics. Take consoles for example, the first ps1 I ever got still works, but I've gone through 3 ps3's.

I have a Sony Walkman 16Gb - shapewise it looks like a sleeker, more "space-age" ipod, can drag&drop without the NECESSITY of installing itunes (seriously, fuck apple for ever for this) and is just generally cooler. And like half the price of an ipod, for a better-quality brand.

I'm using a Cowon iAudio 7 for about 3 years now, and I can really recommend it to you (or rather the iAudio 9, newer model). They cost a little more than most other mp3-players, but the sound quality is great (some say they are the best sounding music players), you have lots of options to alter the sound quality even more (customizable 5-band equalizer, BBE, Mach3-bass, mpEnhance,...), the battery is almost oversized :D (depending on the model 30-75 h battery time) and the handling is great, too. Once you are familiar with the controls, it is easy and fast to use. Unlike any apple products, they play most audio formats (mp3, ogg, wma, wav, flac, acc,...) and don't need software on your computer; just drag&drop.
The only downsides would be price (but they are totally worth it) and the design. They aren't really elegant, but cowon improved on this with the newer models, though.

Probably incredibly dated by now, but I used a Sandisk Sansa for the longest time. Durable little thing, put up with two years of gym workouts and had a simple interface and was plug-and-play with Windows Media. No iTunes bullshit.

Can buy them for around $30 new online.
