I saw St. Anger for sale at an HMV today for 15 dollars.

I don't shop at HMV.

No, of course not. You were just browsing to be ironic.

Well no. I browse there whenever Im around because there's a serious dearth of CD stores in my area. I have to take what I can get. Yet I've only ever bought two Deadmau5 albums from there. Were HMV and me a couple, we would repeatedly try to get together only to fail repeatedly.

Yeah I'm just joking. I do the same thing if I'm stuck in a mall for a bit, but never end up buying anything either. Well actually I did buy Jackie Chan's 'Rumble in the Bronx' for 5 bucks last time I was there. It was worth every penny.

Been watching Carl Sagan's Cosmos, and hot damn is it ever amazing. Does anyone know any other awesome science themed shows?

Dark Matters is pretty cool. It talks about scientists going too far with their experiments, like Thomas Edison inventing the electric chair, and Duncan MacDougall finding the weight of the soul.

On a more cosmic scale, I look to Through the Wormhole and The Universe on H2.

St - Anger is awesome. Easily Metallica's catchiest album.

So I have a "growing up" kinda question for some of the older posters. What happens to the kids in high school with all the piercings and shit? One of the public schools near me has some a cliche of kids who are pretty into body piercing and stuff, and they've got some pretty wild stuff (one of dudes I know, his gf has 7 rings on her face alone). Perhaps the only reason I'm asking this is because I'm from a more upper class background, but seriously, I've never seen an adult with all that kinda stuff. Is it just where I'm from? And like, what kind of places do these people work at when they're older?

For the record, I'm not judging people into this kind of stuff. I think it's neat, albeit definitely not for me. I'm just generally curious.

A buddy of mine runs Holey Body in Saginaw where he does body modification; as you'd expect, he's pretty heavy duty on that. As for what those people do? Well, generally if you're into body modding, you're probably not looking to do some sort of office work. A lot of them do just stop doing it and let the holes close up too.

I believe either most piercings can, despite everything, actually be removed when it's necessary, and it's not like you're left with a huge void in your skin wherever you put it, holes like that are hard to see unless you look at least somewhat closely. So there's that, but it could also be that you don't really see any "older" people like that because such heavy piercings with the exception of a few very rare cases still isn't an old enough trend to have become noticeable in ages above like... 25.

I think my first explanation is the more reasonable though.

Damnit, Hammerheart is a beautiful song. I'm not really feeling the rest of the album; but this song is powerful.

Tonight I bore witness to a Trans-Siberian Orchestra show, all from the quite close vantage point of the second row.

Contain your jealousy I beg of thee, though my night was awesome and filled with glee!

... Damn, that black guy narrator has had quite an effect, for now I'm miming his nuances whilst I reflect, that this has raised my overall affect, and my evening was damn near perfect.

This made me think recently...Is Saxon's 'Strangers in the Night' based on a real event?

Gonna have to check that out. Sounds like it'd be right up my alley!

And yeah, Necroshine is pretty sweet. I like that they bust out the title track live on this tour. Everyone loves the first five of theirs... and for good reason... but it's not like they fell apart after that. Misstepped, sure, but I Hear Black wasn't Risk levels of suck, and W.F.O. had a couple cool tracks on it. But that's it for "bad" albums: everything else has been FUCKING SOLID, even worthy of competing with the classics at times. And where they're going now... shit, I don't think they can be stopped.

Or maybe I'm just a tremendous Overkill fanboy WHO KNOWS?

The title track sounds like a bunch of songs tacked together by acoustic interludes. There's some cool sections, but it's way too long. The rest of the songs aren't bad. I'll give it some more listens. It's no Hammerheart (album).

Probably the latter. But yeah, Necroshine is a staple in their setlist, I think. They played it on the Ironbound-tour as well and it appears on Wreckin' Everything as well as Live in Wacken 2007 (that's Bloodletting and Immortalis-tours respectively). I would throw From the Underground and Below as well as RelixIV on the crap-folder as well. Actually, I'm more fond of W.F.O. than those: At least it has Gasoline Dream and Bastard Nation. Not too keen on Immortalis or Killbox 13 either. Personally, I find Under the Influence very underwhelming as well. Maybe it's overshadowed by the two monsters afterwards or the quality of the best songs on the first two, but it's a really lackluster album with nothing on it that I actually want to listen to.

But Voivod's Phobos... Now that's a spectacular album.

Yea, I had blast seeing them a few weeks ago. Great show.

Sounds like a good show - I'll be seeing them later in the year, and look forward to hearing songs from 'Torture' live; that album has really got me into the band again, after not really paying them much attention since high school. However, I've honestly never heard of anyone falling asleep at a gig. Is this a common phenomenon?

I almost fell asleep once at a band I cannot remember... that ought to say more than it might sound like at first, if you think about it for a minute. ;-)

Well, yes. Still, I'm very impressed at gig sleepers' ability to block out the noise around them. And ignore the people shoving and shouting around them. I will have to learn this skill - seems like a great way to make use of time otherwise occupied by annoying support bands.

Haha... Under The Influence is probably my favorite of the first five albums, or at least a close second to Taking Over. Shred's a classic opener, plus you've got Drunken Wisdom, Hello From The Gutter, Head First, Never Say Never... well, I can keep going. But it also probably says something that Years Of Decay is my least favorite of those early albums. The first three tracks are brilliant, but after that I tend to lose interest.

But hey, at least we can agree on Phobos kicking ass! Have you checked out Negatron at all? I feel that one pairs with Phobos particularly well.

Well, you know, the first three of The Years of Decay are good thrashers, but where the album turns into a monster is the four consecutive songs from Playing with Spiders/Skullcrusher to the title track so yeah, looks like we're on opposite sides here! Mind you, the last track is pretty bad though. I like to pretend the album finishes with the title track.

Yeah, I've heard Negatron a few times. It's good, but not something I really listen to that much and certainly has nothing to the progressive and weird, metal-in-opposition stylings of Phobos. It does have that same alien otherworldliness to it as Phobos, but not as strongly.

So yeah, I'm a little behind (no cable tv, you know) and is watching the first season of Game Of Thrones, am up to the last episode, Fire and Blood, and I'm a little pissed, both literally and figuratively. Goddamn Lannisters are annoying the hell out of me.

I still haven't caught up with that series either; just don't have the time time at the moment. But the Lannisters annoy everyone - even in the board-game version.

We got Shangren too. And I remember hearing about a Chinese metalcore band, but I don't remember their name of if they were any good.

That would be perfect. Although Solstafir no longer plays black metal, their sounds would totally suit each other. "Masterpiece of Bitterness" and "Kold" are just perfect. Enslaved have way to many good albums to name off the top of my head.

Anyone else into the French atmospheric/experimental death metal band Aabsinthe? Really unique sound, listening to them a lot lately. Heres a link if anyone wants to listen, although its one of their least experimental songs:
