I remember a thread like this a long time ago, so i think I'll restart it. This thread is for anything psych related. Favorite bands, recommendations, general history, links, whatever. I may as well start. Frijid Pink is a pretty awesome band: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t40INnb6DnY They do the best version of House of the Rising Sun ever. I would mainly like to stick to obscure stuff here, mainly cause I don't want ten pages of Pink Floyd trivia, but other than that, post anything.

If you are looking for good psychedelic rock, then this Australian band is simply the last word.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NONaxCjTsnc

This is a fairly recent recording by the way; this band is from the late 2000's but seriously, each and every single song on this album is just amazing. One of those CD's I just can't stop listening to.

I'm really into Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix and early Hawkwind, but I won't talk too much about them because you wanted to stick to the more obscure. Blaak Heat Shujaa is probably my favourite psychedelic thing going on. Fans of psych doom band Naam should probably dig it. It definitely has a slight doom metal influence, but generally sticks to the more rock side of things. Their from France but they flew to America to record with Scott Reeder (Kyuss bassist.) This would be absolutely perfect for driving through the desert:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njYf72fCOAA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRnnrtOjjuk

I'm also digging Crumbling Ghost, who mix british folk and psych rock with a hint of doom metal:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZKiAZBTFrc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9U7P69SeIv4

I also love it when Queens of the Stone age lean on the psychedelic side. I think some of their best songs have been in this style. They've changed a lot and the psych elements haven't been consistent with each other, but its definitely worth a listen:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7t4TRDUvFZE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhFIJkMz508

I've always found Flower Travellin' band's "Satori" album to be quite psychedelic. One of my favourite albums of all time, the guy in it plays a cross between an electric guitar and a sitar (or something similar to that):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jspySKgj ... re=related

Theres also a tonne of great psychedelic doom metal, as well as a few good black and death ones. Its really a style that can be added successfully to nearly every genre. Also, would it be appropriate to post about psychedelia that doesn't really have to do with rock or metal here? I know the thread is called "psychedelic rock", but you also said in the description anything psych related.

I'll post some of my favorite's:

Amon duul II's yeti album is a great unusual sounding psychedelic krautrock masterpiece.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-qP8w5VGW0

Os mutantes are one of the best tropicalia bands, mixing brazillian music with psychedelic rock:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIGGk05DWYk

Gong is one of the best bands from the canterbury scene, playing an extremely jazzy version of space rock, extremely trippy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEgZeZgZ248

Dr john's gris gris is a psychedelic gumbo voodoo masterpiece straight up from the swamps of new orleans.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWvdO3l4_P8

Can is one of the best krautrock bands, some of their material is very trippy, the screeching violins, the odd voices and instruments in this song would probably make this a fun if insane thing to trip to.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7l73SD7PnL8

Along with can, Faust is one of the best krautrock albums, their debut is extremely schizophrenic and trippy sounding, this song reminds me of the beatles revolution 9 in the way its put together.

I've been getting into quite a bit of psych rock lately so I guess I'll post some of my favorites.

anyone who's a fan of Hawkwind will probably enjoy Litmus. I've seen them described as a 21st century version of Hawkwind, which is actually pretty accurate.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65l_V6klZ2s

Another one of my favorites is Dead Meadow, started out as more of a stoner rock band but have added copious amounts of psych into their sound.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHgemYZ852A (sound quality isn't the best on this video, sorry)

If you're more into the really trippy jam stuff I'd highly recommend Electric Moon, they sound like they've got some doom influences as well.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLbOqipO3uM

In a similar vein as Electric Moon there's also The Cosmic Dead, a band I enjoy a little bit more probably because they're heavier.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdPeEUB0p-w

This album is actually a free download on their bandcamp page so check it out http://thecosmicdead.bandcamp.com/album/psychonaut

I'm not extremely knowledgeable about krautrock, but I recently found out about Hisko Detria and would highly recommend them, you can download their 2012 demo on their bandcamp page for free.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lX5hlR9m_dc
http://hiskodetria.bandcamp.com/

The last band I'll recommend is the Austrian psych/space rock band Interkosmos. If you're into strange effects and spacey atmospheres you'll dig this.

I don't think they've been mentioned yet, but Porcupine Tree are definitely worth a listen. Their early stuff was psychedelic, but nowadays they're just um... prog.

Here's an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Yn0Emhadok -- the extended version of "Synesthesia."

Huge props to Astra and Orne, very cool modern psych/prog rock. Orne has members from Rev Biz, it's very occult psychedelic rock.
Astra is a really good American band, sounds like Pink Floyd at times.

Amon Duul II is pretty well agreed upon as the most innovative Rock band ever according to this board, and your really missing out if you haven't listened to them already. I would start with Yeti and Phallus Dei then work your way through the rest of their discography. It's really, really great stuff.

Funny this thread pops up, I've been digging a lot of Ozric Tentacles lately. You guys got any recs for similar stuff and maybe what albums of theirs to really check out? So far I dig the newer ones a lot, "Yumyum Tree" and "Paper Monkeys".

I'vr been a huge Ozrics fan since 1993, such a fantastic band with a vast discography. You definitely need to check out their classic albums: "Erpland", "Pungent Effulgent", "Jurassic Shift" and "Arborescence", basically their 1989-1994 period. The pre-1989 albums are more like demo quality, but still great. Personally, my interest in them started to wane with the later albums, but I still cite them as one of my favourite bands.

For similar stuff, check out Quantam Fantay (pretty much an OT clone) and Paperhouse (much simpler, more straightforward)

Elaborating on my previous post, I have a bit of an obsession with the UK psych/festival/squat scene of the 80s and 90s, of which Ozric Tentacles is perhaps the best known act. The scene came out of the post-punk DIY scene, and was a melting pot of psychedelia, space-rock, prog, punk, dub, folk and rave. Some of my favourite bands from this scene:

Crow:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lg40lwzOiA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7OD-nmSj-M

Dead Flowers:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_b7wST8ZI0s

Iowaska:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofGgBodnZLQ

Mandragora:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dv-U77jgzTM

Moondragon:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92zAMHUldZM

Paperhouse:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZ2XuWD4y5Q

Soma:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6pjXiEW_DQ

Plus a multitude of other bands like Here & Now, Ship of Fools, Sons of Selina, Webcore, Ring, Omnia Opera, Mind Octopus, Elemental (my first band!)

OK, nice job guys... but how has Coven not been mentioned yet?!? Anyway, here you go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bioDjGRCccs
And while I'm at it Suck (1970)- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M81LItngUUU
and The Maze- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbKqAuOogT4
Figured I'd throw some more old school in the mix.

Nektar put out some seriously trippy stuff, especially in the early 70s. I love their first album.

I love Nektar's "A Tab in the Ocean" album, but strangely could never seem to get into the other stuff. Maybe I'll give it another go.

Checking out Quantam Fantay... yeah this is amazing, guess it's the "space rock" I should really look into? I'll have to check out the other stuff you mentioned. I especially love how this stuff can be pretty fast sometimes, on top of a very dense and "full" sound... almost heavy in a sense, so it's pretty awesome. Loving it! Any pointers for Quantam Fantay? "Autumn Landscapes" was the first song on youtube, totally loving this.

Listening now, and I like what I'm hearing!

Anyway more recs from me:

If you like Hendrix-esque psych rock that's not super tripped out I'd encourage you to check out Comets on Fire
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1Rzi8pt6QU

Of course we can't let this thread go too long without a mention of Acid Mother's Temple I'm not quite as into them as the other bands I've mentioned, but they are an important band to the genre.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSJnhpmuuhc

If you like heavy, trippy jams with lots of guitar solos check out Earthless It's actually really cool stuff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNsmRDUoMyQ

Wooden Shjips sounds a bit more krautrockish, but regardless of what they are its worth checking out.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KBM40KAn1U

Some people might disagree with this since this band is on the Metal Archives, but I really feel that Earth's newer stuff is worth mentioning in this thread.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWrg3hgH4Jg

Finally I cannot recommend Mammatus enough. This band used to be on MA but was removed for not being metal enough, but you can tell that they're hugely influenced by Sleep. So if you're a metalhead who's looking for a gateway band into psychedelic rock check this out now!

Sorry, no; I don't listen to them myself, because they sound so much like Ozrics. Normally, when I like a band, I like to hear other bands playing the same style, but I think Ozrics' vast output satisfies my needs in this respect.

Another band that gets mentioned a lot in respect to Ozrics is Hidria Spacefolk, but again I don't listen to them so I can't help you any further.

Wow, discovered some really cool music in this thread. Heres some I forgot to add the first time:

Quest for Fire is a pretty awesome psychedelic rock band from Toronto. Its not abstract enough for their songs to feel formless, with just the right combination of conventional songwriting and experimentation:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wyv5JDNO3KY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdzPzR95Q-Y

I also found some stuff from Grinderman's second record (aptly titled Grinderman II) had overtly psychedelic vibes. Its too bad they're not together anymore, but I never saw the point in making a separate band for it, as a lot of it reminds me of the Bad Seed's record "Let Love In.'' Anyway, here are some examples:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1km7-SEFWP4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hR0JUZER ... ure=fvwrel

Also, Ufesas are pretty trippy. They definitely have some metal influences, but I would say they are more of a rock band. Definitely have a stoner vibe:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XWxPDXb ... 9517893FCC
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLp-F83_ ... 9517893FCC

By the way, found out about a lot of psychedelic bands on the blogs stonerrobixxx and lifeispsychedelic. I also like a bit of non-rock psychedelia, usually electronic. Shpongle are great, really unique psychedelic electronic:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2LK-zGfdUU
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQyR-FXJCLk

Also, for trance, Protoculture is pretty good:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69fgNJ5hGYM

Oh, and Portland instrumental band Grails can be quite psychedelic at times:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3yw6897F_A

Here's another great underground UK band from the 80s, South London's Normil Hawaiians. They emerged from the post-punk scene sounding somewhere between A Certain Ratio and early Killing Joke, before slowly evolving in a more psych-orientated direction. This is my favourite track of theirs which nicely treads the post-punk/psych divide. Hawkwind's Dave Anderson supplies some of the bass for this album:

I'm gonna go uncharacteristically on the beaten path and mention one that's topical with the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame induction that's been happening -

Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man" from '68:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lKCUuyojDI

Captain Beyond's "Myopic Void" from '72 is in there somewhere:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91Mix3lRrIs

Velvett Fogg's "Lady Caroline" from '69. Love the twizzling cacophony in the background and the lack of a chorus. The story's pretty darn cool. So's the album cover:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSIZK2CLMR0

Writing on the Wall's "Buffalo" from '72, a lonely little song with an odd, American Indian/rain dance-style beat and celestial flute. It gets more psychy as it goes on. This is actually the shortened version:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oilPk4TKpaM

Kak's "Lemonaide Kid" from '69:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gddotLV2gI

^^^ Mmmm, that Writing On The Wall track is very nice. The flute just jogged my memory about another band -- Quintessence. They played the very first Glastonbury Festival back in 1970, and were very much into the eastern philosophies that were sweeping through hippy culture at the time. This is my favourite song of theirs:

There's some pretty sweet stuff in this thread. Much love for Ozrics, for example. Allow me to chime in with some stuff:

Colour Haze, great German stuff, totally going to see them in September when they do a goddamn 3 hour set.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXOVrqVvtnM

My Sleeping Karma, again German, I think, I'm loving III at the minute:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvomC3Q_ ... re=related

Farflung is some excellent American space rock, their vocalist/keyboardist looks scarily like Eddie Izzard, and they're fucking phenomenal live.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPp9VNbwnxg

Samsara Blues Experiment is more goodness:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TnNb3cB ... re=related

Dragontears, featuring members of Baby Woodrose, Danish cool stuff:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Onu8yBDFxOw

35007, White Hills, Hollow Mirrors and Sungrazer are all really good bands, too that you guys should get on.

I've just uploaded to Youtube a couple of tracks by Mind Octopus, a 90s UK band I mentioned briefly in an earlier post. I thought some of you might like them:

(although the second video fits the music only partially, cool that a fan uploaded the song though)
