I hate my cubicle.

But going for drinks after work makes it feel ok for a while.

So does playing drums, for that matter.

Anyone seen Negura Bunget on this tour? I'm going tonight

Well, Jonpo, you need not work hard. You're Jonpo. Things will undoubtedly come to you in bounties!

Abom: Yeah, I'm actually right there, haha, going for drink with some mates then I'm playing live tonight. So that really does make the week go by quickly. Plus, having money is awesome. Also.... >:O

I'm jealous of you getting to see Negura Bunget

Frog, you sure they aren't coming anywhere near you? Seems this is a pretty big NA tour for them.

I'm wondering though, since the lineup is completely revamped, how good this will be. Mind you, it's not like I have seen them live before, and I think they're a rare case of a band that's actually ggotten more interesting as they went along (I think their old stuff is pretty crappy), so I bet they know what they're doing...

Wow, that's oddly insightful as to how I live my life. I don't need anything bountiful to be happy I'm a pretty easily amused guy, but I definitely have a way of letting things come to me. I don't think we've ever had a conversation unless you're in the chat under a name I didn't recognize. Pretty impressed with your perceptiveness, even if you were being feces-shush.

I haven't heard any material from Negura Bunget since Om and the members splitting. I always thought of them more as a "record" kind of band though, you know? Just pure atmosphere channelled through the headphones. Should be interesting to see if they can carry that off live. Good luck man!

Yeah man, it really is cool. I've been posted up in Cleveland for a little while now, and I haven't left just because the market for writers is off the charts here. But, it's cool just being able to uproot and go wherever. I'm off to DC this summer for some Migrant Worker's Legal program, then I've got some work for a paper out in Baltimore lined up. You just gotta put your shit out there and keep pushing. I love it. Especially cause my girlfriend is doing a career in politics in DC, and has been very supportive of me moving all around. However, if you're single, just go for it.

Yeah, my main issue has just been balancing schoolwork with professional writing - the pro writing and career stuff always takes a backseat to doing my coursework right now. Once I'm out of college for good I have no doubt I will be able to do something related to writing in some capacity. I'm out on summer break right now and plan to spend time on my freelance journalism blog and just looking for any kind of paid work.

I'm actually getting a reasonable following for my movie blog too...hard work does pay off, ha ha.

The closest to me is Columbus or Pittsburgh. Which isn't bad...but it's a three or two hour drive respectively, and driving after concerts blows, especially at like 3AM. However, if I can find somebody in either city and crash there, I'll prolly go.But, yeah, I've never seen them, and I'm with you, the newer stuff is a lot better in my opinion, I can't imagine the live show being weak. Even if they are a record band...something tells me they'll kick ass live.

@Jonpo: Nah, I dun think we've chatted, I'm rarely in the room (ancoconuts) just because my schedule's been requiring me to get up around 6AM. Call it a lucky guess, haha.

EMP: Right on dude, yeah as long as you're writing you're golden, even if you gotta work some convenient store job to help foot the bills. That's cool news about your blog getting a following though! I've always enjoyed reading your reviews.

I love mine. It's the power behind the thrones, the misty grey eminence of unlimited influence, and has its tentacles intertwined in the structures of power. Also, the piles of stuff on the desk make it repulsive to everybody else, so they leave me alone when I'm there. Also, coffee.

No. Stormblåst is Norwegian for stormblown. There's no space between the words, and it's not a blast.

Out of curiosity, how do you pronounce that a with the circle over it, and what's the proper name for the circle? I've seen it in a couple of places, and I'd prefer to minimize my chances of sounding like an idiot in the future.

I can't think of a name for the circle itself. The letter is essentially 'o', as pronounced in 'overkill'. We call it the "swedish o". In Swedish and other similar languages the letter o is pronounced differently (close to the double o in doom).

Å isn't actually pronounced like the o in overkill (ou), but like the o in 'storm' except long (oo). At least in blåst. I think. Might be short too. I can't remember if it's different depending on where it is in the word.

The worst thing about missing that gig was that you missed out on fucking Portal. Absu were good, but Proscriptor wears so many shiny silver things, he looks like either the silver spandex Dennis wears when he wants to be a musician in It's Always Sunny In Philidephia, or the Mirror Ball Suit from the Mighty Boosh, depending on whether you've watched either show. I mean the music was good, but the ridiculousness of it all kind of took away from it a bit, too silly for my tastes.

 I can imagine what that looked like; I love both shows, actually. And Portal is another one of those bands that I got into soon after missing their gig - I get a little mad every time I see someone with a shirt from that tour. At least there's a good chance they'll be around again, given their location. Right? Right? Oh, dammit.

If it makes you feel better Portal weren't selling any merch and Absu's shirts were bright silver and glittery, so I'll never wear it haha.

I forgot how good Sigh were at writing riffs. Trying to go back and revisit their discography to put the new one into context.

Yes. Or rather, in Swedish the letter å is pronounced as a long /o/ usually, if you know phonemes, while the letter o is pronounced as /u/.

I've always thought Å was "aw" or a cross between "oh" and "aw"

But it's sometimes pronounced more like a long o, sort of like the oo and book.

åka is pronounced ˈoːka

Apologies, cognitive dissonance on my part. I thought the u separate of o in the ou. :durr:

The a in "water" is close, I'd say. Not quite Mah-ne-garm but not quite Moh-ne-garm either. There, a Swede told you. :D

Also, I'm drunk. Hi, non-drunks!

EDIT: Unless you pronounce water like a fucker, obviously.

You mean an American or Canadian? :P British pronunciation is closer to "woh-tehr", American English closer to "wah-tur".

So it's... hmm, Muh-neh-garm?

I was pissed about this, I got there early and there was no Portal merch to be seen. Stoked and still stoked to have seen Portal, although the malfunction of The Curator's hat took away some of the impact. I asked all my metal friends to see it and no one wanted to come, that just goes to show you. Or they'll do the last minute thing and miss out on tickets. Seriously, buy your tickets early, you're not being cool because you get them late. Absu were really tight musically but hilarious, the vocals the drummer did between songs.. Couldn't help but think it was for a laugh.

Closer to the British then, that generally being closer to how I speak it myself. "Uh" is generally closer to ö. So more like "woh-tehr".

Yeah that sucked, I really wanted a Portal shirt. Yeah the hat falling off at the end was disappointing, but I was already pretty enthralled so it wasn't a huge issue. Oh god, the banter, so cartoony. I never liked his vocals either, so I was happy the bassist sung most of the songs. The worst thing about the Absu shirt being so gay is that I still don't have anything black metally for Inquisition, I'll have to go all ill fitting again.

I've heard "water" pronounced with a more 'o' type sound and a 'd' instead of 't' around here. Turns out to be a distinction of the Philadelphia dialect. Though English has lots of regional dialects in North America I think Pennsylvania has the most, since there is a distinct dialect for Philadelphia, New York, Pittsburgh and the Pennsylvania Dutch region - possible something different in the Northwest corner by Erie. An example being the words "cot" and "caught" are pronounced differently in Philadelphia but the same in Pittsburgh.

Linguistics is another hobby of mine, even worked on my own constructed language that used VOS ordering.

I've never heard water being pronounced like "woe-tur" until I heard a Brit say it. So weird.

Vigh-tuh-mun wah-tur

Vih-tuh-min woe-tur

Yes! This is arguably the earliest funeral doom band, though Thergothon's demo came out in late 1991 it is very certain that this band didn't start out influenced by Thergothon. In fact they sound almost nothing like them. I've always gotten the impression that they were more like Celtic Frost + Black Sabbath slowed drastically down.

Never understood why they were removed in the first place, but information on them was really difficult to find other than their album appearing on many blogspots. Glad they are back though!

That kind of reminds me of something, around a year ago or so, there was some discussion here about an early band playing funeral doom. From what I remember, the band was largely considered to be a hoax. Anyone remember what band that was?

Not a hoax but nothing resembling metal either. That band was Flittering and I later managed to dig up some sound samples from their release "Gloom"... was basically ambient drone.

The worst thing about the Absu shirt being so gay is that I still don't have anything black metally for Inquisition, I'll have to go all ill fitting again.

It wasn't a major issue, it was just awkward, one of the band members should have told him or something. I was way into their set by that point to care. I kind of lost track of what songs were being played, do you know what the setlist was? I went to the Melbourne show.

So I heard Therion is working on a new album!

And they'll be going on a 25th anniversary tour to support it, so hopefully they play in the United States this time! I do realize Christofer doesn't like playing over here though, but damn would it be sweet if they were somehow booked at Reverb.

I've never heard water being pronounced like "woe-tur" until I heard a Brit say it. So weird.

I'm pretty sure they pronounce it "War-ter", or "War-ta" if they are less posh.
