Hmm. I'm shocked someone else on here is familiar with that lingo.

Just today I realized I really don't like Woods of Ypres. I listened through 5 all the way and it comes off as really sappy and one-dimensional to me. I get why people like it but it kind of reminds me of Novembers Doom without the doom.

Woods of Ypres are a really weird band for me. Its like their albums are horrible but usually have one amazing song. For Pursuit of the Sun... the album isn't really all that good, but "Dragged Across a Forest Floor" is awesome. Woods III is absolutely fucking awful, but I really dig "Your Ontario Town is a Burial Ground." I may be a bit biased because I connect with the lyrics, through most of my life I couldn't wait to get the fuck out of Ottawa.

So last night, despite having a monster of a cold and it being a weeknight and the venue being an hour away, I went to see Overkill for the annual day-after-my-birthday concert. I last saw them in '07, so I was definitely excited to see what they'd done with the set list with Ironbound and Electric Age kicking ass and all.

But first, a run-down of the openers:
Diamond Plate - you should all know my feelings about this band by now. But notably, they played a new song, so that was cool.
Suidakra - Much better live than on album. The setting really added the needed oomph to their sound. So that was cool.
God Forbid - This band sucks. Like, really bad. Instead of dealing with it, I went outside and got to meet Bobby in person. So that was cool.

And then, of course, Overkill. I swear to Xenu, this band can do no wrong. They even played fucking NECROSHINE, of all songs. But it was awesome. And it made me realize I need to get all of their albums, not just the first five + the newest two. GOTTA CATCH 'EM ALL. Their set had the obligatory classics (Elimination, Hello From The Gutter, Rotten to the Core, Fuck You, Wrecking Crew, and Deny The Cross), but they also played a couple post-Horrorscope songs that actually worked really well live. And, much to my pleasure, they packed the rest of the set with Ironbound/Electric Age material. Have I mentioned how much ass Overkill kicks? Because the answer is all: they kick ALL of the ass.

Also strobe lights. Still with the strobe lights.

I'm seeing Overkill a week from Saturday. Saw them once two years ago, but I hardly knew any of their songs. Now that I'm familiar with pretty much their entire discography, it should be much more enjoyable-not that it wasn't the first time.

No, but it's definitely a set with a couple eyebrow-raisers:
http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/overkill/ ... e5a2e.html

Notably, From the Underground and Below, W.F.O., and ReliXIV all get a representation. Because I guess they don't want to get suckered into only playing stuff from the first five to round out their sets. I dunno. But the point is, they're awesome, especially live.

'ReliXIV' is really boring from what I recall. 'Ironbound' and 'The Electric Age' are on a totally different level.

There may be bad Overkill albums, but there is no such thing as a bad album by Overkill, if you catch my meaning. Old School is an... odd pick from that one, but hell, Overkill's always had a hit of punk in them, so sure, why not?

Just looked up Woods of Ypres for the first time and had to shut it off after barely two minutes. It's like Nickelback trying to be "meaningful."

Whoa there! They're bad, but Nickleback bad? No way. I've never met a single person who likes Nickleback.

I obviously have, but no dice. It's always puzzled me. They're a relatively "big" band, they sell out concerts, yet every single person I've ever spoken too agrees that they are pure, unadultarated shit.

Can't get over how annoyingly loud the drums are on the new Fear Factory song, headache inducing-ly loud. Try to turn it up so I can hear the guitar and all I get is louder pummelling. Does anyone else notice this? It's a really good song too so it's making me sad face.

Oh man I love those kidns of people. You can say anything to them, and they'll one up you with some story about how awesome they are.

I'm serious, I mentioned that I was considering getting a cheap mini-fridge and this guy at work started going on about how he has several minifridges in a spare bedroom he turned into a bar and has a pool table and he's really badass at pool so nobody ever wants to play him.

Yeah, we'd all just laugh at him. This guy kept telling another worker he could keep his new dirt bike in his shed if he wanted. No idea why somebody would do that if they had their own place to keep it. We just assumed he wanted it at his house so he could tell people he owned it.

Ugh. Why are there so many psuedo-Rock bands from the mid-nineties that are utter garbage. Heroin, perhaps?

I blame the tar sands in Nickelback's case. They're probably using it in syringes too!

I wouldn't be surprised, Nicklebacks lead singer looks like a meth baby that was dropped on it's head, from a second floor window. They take the concept of the shitty, unoriginal rock band and crank it up to 11. They transcend lameness. To become something much much worse.

Believe it or not there actually devoted fans of that trash where I'm from. If we get into a conversation about music I just show them Ride or Slowdive and they like that at least.

Intense hatred of Nickelback is nothing more than an internet meme, and I'm surprised that people here care about them at all, whether positive or negative.

Nickelback is kind of like the Conservative Party. I don't know anyone who likes them, but they seem to do quite well for themselves.

Dunno about any other place, but here in the southern US they have quite the fanbase, mostly comprised of wrestling fans, fraternity douchebags and rednecks.

EDIT: Come to think of it, most of those people are also the bulk of the Conservative Party.

EDIT #16: Call off the hunt folks, google's advanced image search is pretty amazing. Just had to tell it I was specifically looking for .gifs and boom...first page.

If anyone cares, probably not: http://30.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ltad9 ... o1_500.gif

Nickelback sucks but it's far from the worst music ever created...

I would definitely pick Nickelback over Nicki Minaj if I had to choose between the two.

Don't think I'll ever be in a situation like that so fuck both of 'em.

This must be how the mods feel when we try to have a gentlemans discussion on hair care products and dating advice. Skin is crawling, and it has nothing to do with how good or bad Nickelback is.

Heh, I love feeding my mantises...

They sit on my desk, roaming around under supervision... most of the time they stick to one spot and sit there, sometimes darting their head toward either the text I'm typing on the screen, my mouse, or my fingers moving.

Then I just hand them a cricket with forceps.

This is what I have:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spLTueSSr8c

Two of them, especially my sub-adult female named Vex, has those eyespots - it's rubbed eye syndrome and is a sign that their habitat is too small, but some species are especially prone to it even in large terrariums. I might move Vex to a larger container though, just to give her more molting space for her last molt.

My other two mantises are named Astrid and Aela. If anyone knows what inspired those names you will win a giant black dildo metal cookie!

Having a mantis as a pet seems like it'd be weird. Wouldn't it be all too easy to accidentally step on one, or lose it? :???:

Also, those names are major people in three factions in Skyrim. Can I have the dildo as a prize, instead?

Not only 3 people, but 3 "sexy chicks", my favorite being Astrid of course, her husband is a fucking werewolf and she's an assassin. But yeah, Goatfangs wins the lonely Nerd award of the year!

Notably, From the Underground and Below, W.F.O., and ReliXIV all get a representation. Because I guess they don't want to get suckered into only playing stuff from the first five to round out their sets. I dunno. But the point is, they're awesome, especially live.

Only one song off Years of Decay, no Horrorscope, Under the Influence or Bloodletting? That is an extremely questionable setlist, and quite frankly a little disappointing. Thanks for the link though dude, I appreciate it.
