I haven't really explored this genre. The only band I listen to is Nuclear Desecration. So if there are any bands similar to them to start off with, let me know. And also, good Morbid Angel/Slayer-type solos would be a plus. Thanks.

Youve misunderstood what he means by war metal bro. Those bands are just metal bands with lyrics about war. the op means bestial black metal. As for where to start with that stuff:
Blasphemy are like the Death of that scene. Start there. The associated bands Revenge and Conqueror are also good. The 2 war metal titans of finland, archgoat and beherit are also good starters. Only other introductory band i can think of is Goatpenis

Holocausto, playing 'war metal' in 1987 and possible use that label first. Very strong influence to Blasphemy and Beherit.

Ok, you did not specify if the bands lyrics had to be about war, as so called War Metal is also often called Bestial Black Metal, or Black/Death or whatever. So I am gonna separate the rec's into two categorey's: bands with lyrics about war, and bands that sound like War Metal bands but have lyrics about Satan and what not.

Bands with lyrics about War:

Goatpenis(3rding that rec): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQoPRa_c ... re=related

Iconoclast Contra: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9IadODEcdc

Zygoatsis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcqFk9HYvI0

Amuptator: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJn9dt9IToY

Niden Div. 187: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsTytc1OugM

Conqueror: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaIM45GZn0A

Truppensturm: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFP19FUZMAA

Bands with the same sound as the bands above, but with lyrics about other stuff(Satan, Gore, etc.)

Archgoat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLtmrSa6iSs

Morbosidad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tGrutLTv-w

Antichrist: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbOkR668YxU

Impious Baptism: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pD4ypCx5miU

Bestial Warlust(they also have songs about War): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaYjn32J ... re=related

Profanatica: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntetQnpwPmU

Blasphemophager: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSXlEn4bPL0

Pseudogod: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RV0je1stuSM

I think Blasphemophager is a good place to start, as their full lengths are really well produced.

I've always wondered if Von count - I seem to keep them in my head in the same general notion as Blasphemy, but they don't seem to be considered war metal by many.

I suppose it's because they have a similar "bestial" feel, what with the growled vocals and completely primitive style they play. Musically, they're barely anything like what's considered war metal though.

Bestial Raids-Desolation Temple

Most of the bands I listed lack the grindish element of bands such as Revenge and Black Witchery, war metal usually has a massive sense of chaos songwriting in terms of just randomly violent riffs but from the examples I've listed bands that include discernable riffs that make them just as brutal if not more brutal than the Blasphemy clones. Also I second Sadistik Exekution even though they are more thrash.

If you're just getting into the genre, then Sarcófago's album INRI is pretty obvious.

I always imagined "war metal" was more like Progetto:ChaosGoat.666, having a literally war/apocalypse-oriented (as opposed to just angry-sounding) atmosphere. On the song "Extirpation of Life . . .", for example, there is a whole minute of warning sirens and explosions, and then the black metal kicks in. Or "Deus Nobiscum", which has people screaming, and some kind of crashing sound.

Besides the potential genre discussion there, that also counts as a recommendation, especially if the OP doesn't mind sound samples. They only have (I think) one metal song on MySpace right now ("I Morti Cammineranno Sulla Terra") , but it's a good example of what's going on.

Bolt Thrower are better than both of them so, so check them out,
even though they are not chaos black metal.

Where's the Nunslaughter at, guys? I've always considered them to be "Bestial", as it were. More Thrash that Death/Black but still: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jtkAOXWBGE

Also, Bestial Mockery anyone? More of the same, really: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_uRjFbeqi0

Hmm, I'll throw Hellacaust in here. Not really your typical, chaos ridden BM, but definitely some areas featuring that dirty, suffocating, "bestial" style.

Seconding Cobalt. Great fucking band. Check out either of their newest full lengths. I still spin Gin on a fairly regular basis. Good stuff.

What is "War Metal"?

Ok, then I apologetically retract the Cobalt suggestion and add that the parameters of "war metal" seem utterly frail, subjective, and defined completely according to the individual's taste--flimsy even by metal genre and subgenre standards.

Not entirely. There's usually a certain set of features that make something war metal, including:

Downtuned grinding guitars.
Old school death/black metal influences apparent in the music.
Almost zero melodic content and the complete absence of anything that's meant to be soft and pleasing to the ear, e.g. clean/acoustic guitar breaks.
Consistently high tempos and blast beats till the end of days.
Very rough and abrasive production.
And that little touch of underground satan cult 666 war goat antichrist.

Compare Colbat's Gin with this. Really, once you've heard it you know what it sounds like.
