Enjoy getting this thread locked in a hurry by one of the mods, haha.

But can you blame them? I love Katatonia, but your post is utterly pointless and no thought was put into it.

I'll attempt to save this thread by actually talking about what I assume you wanna talk about. I've never really been a giant Katatonia fan, but Brave Murder Day is still a classic. I suppose that when it comes to gothic or doom-y metal, I'll always choose a band like Paradise Lost over Katatonia. Even if they played all my BMD, I don't know if I could ever really sit through a live show, I feel like most of their stuff is boring. Maybe I haven't given them a good chance.

I always tought they were boring too, but about two months ago I decided to give them a proper chanse and I kind of started loving them from then on. I prefer the newer albums over the older ones tho, becouse they just sound more right.

Ah hell no, Katatonia is amazing. Seriously still in the higher echelon of music for me both new and old. Night is the New Day was fantastic and I look forward to the new album; I'm sure it'll be yet another masterpiece.

Indeed. Their newer albums are amazing, especially Night Is the New Day. The atmosphere is just amazing. It's pretty much my favorite album to listen to at night.. I thought of taking a very early morning walk (like 3/4 Am) while listening to this album, but I never did. Maybe I should finally do it this summer, those warm, quiet summer nights are the best.

I have heard from so many people that Night is the New Day is really good, and I have yet to check it out. I really ought to. Henkki, you got a favorite song off that album?

That album is indeed amazing. Probably one of my favorites of all time, actually. You weren't asking me, but I'd probably say "Liberation." That chorus kills me every time.

The whole thing is amazing, but I especially like Day and Then the Shade , The Longest Year, The Promise of Deceit , and Onward Into Battle. But really, all the songs are amazing.

Edit. Indeed, Metal_Detector. That chorus is spine chilling.

 well then, I'll just check out the whole album via youtube methinks. Thanks for the suggestions though, my interest is definitely piqued.

Katatonia amazing band, though I thought Night is the New Day was merely good (something missing).

Two of my favourite tracks,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y389T7iaBH4

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zg8cJy1Yqk

so fucking bleak.

To answer the statement: no, however Dance of December Souls>many albums for sure.

Honesty, Katatonia are really a band I don't care about except for their debut. BMD sounds dull as hell and their rock albums could have been enjoyable if it wasn't for the vocals.

I always really wanted to like this band. I remember on another metal forum about 10 years ago there was a "music to listen to during the fall" thread. Katatonia kept coming up, particulary Brave Murder Day. I ended up buying it and it was a grower for me, but in the end I accept its classic status. Their later albums haven't done anything for me, although I confess I didn't really give any of them the same chance. I don't really think they do the cold, bleak metal thing nearly as well as My Dying Bride.

Hehe, the vocals are part of the reason their new albums are so good. :-P Vocals are a very tricky thing to judge anyway. Like, I know you absolutely love Paradise lost, and I don't like their vocals.

That's ok. Honesty, I didn't mind Jonas Renske's cleans at first but got tired of him quick. Had, say, the guy from Anathema done clean vocals on Katatonia's albums then I would have liked their non metal albums for sure.

I picked up Night Is The New Day on a whim, as a friend had been raving about them for a while.
It was totally not what I had expected it to be, but I like the album.

Why does everyone here have such a hard-on for DoDS? Brave Murder Day is clearly the superior album, and contains some of Blakkheim's most emotional riffs.

Their post-doom/death slit my wrist depressive rock crap is pure garbage, but Brave Murder day and Dance of December souls make up for all of the 'woe is me' crap they've done.

Can't really argue with this. Night is the New Day is one of the greatest albums I've ever heard, whether you can call it metal or not. They were a hell of an outfit before that, but Jonas really came into his own on that one.

I love every song on the album, so it's hard to pick one to post here. I'll go with Nephilim.

I haven't heard Night is the New Day or even much other Katatonia (two albums I think, neither of which I particularly liked). However, the "X is the new Y" formula of titles was worn out way before that album. I thought it was lame even on Quiet is the new Loud. Even if this was, for some reason, an exceptionally witty exception to the rule - which I doubt it is - it would still be an exception to a boring rule.

Come to think about it... yeah, I get it. Night is the new day, obviously. Still not witty.

This reminds me, they're one of the early death/doom groups I still haven't listened to.

I like Katatonia but they're remarkably inconsistent. Every album has a handful of good songs, and some insipid filler. Not one of my top bands at all.

Yeah, they're a bit up-and-down for me... don't like DoDS at all, love BMD, don't like DO, like T'sD (though it has some duds), like LFDGD a lot, like VE (though with some duds), love TGCD, and liked NitND (but had some duds). So, yeah...

o_O My experience with Katatonia is pretty limited outside of this album, but I honestly don't think this album has any duds, except for maybe "Black Session". The rest of it is near-perfect, to my ears anyways.

Some of the tracks get boring in their depressing-ness. TGCD is my fave from them anyway.

Just wanted to say thanks to you two. This album is fantastic. It really is just wondrous, and gothic without falling into any cliche's of the genre and without becoming too self-aware. Just an amazing record on the first few listens.

My love of this band has been well documented (probably) throughout the last 10 years on this forum. I'm looking forward to the new album greatly, and Last Fair Deal Gone Down is my all time #1 album (with Tonight's Decision and Viva Emptiness both likely making top 10 if not top 20).

Discouraged Ones is my favorite by them, though BMD is of course a classic. After Tonight's Decision something bad happened though and I don't care about their modern stuff.

Got into them around the time of Dance of December Souls and loved everything up to and including Tonight's Decision. Last Fair Deal Gone Down was the last one I really enjoyed. I stuck with them and bought Viva Emptiness and The Great Cold Distance, but never really got into those last two beyond it being inoffensive background music that I could take or leave and it sounds like their latest is yet more of the same, so I'm passing on it and giving up on them now.
