I only know of two that fit this description (Satanic Warmaster, Goatmoon) which both happen to be finnish, so maybe what I'm really looking for is finnish black metal. Low quality is a must of course, it needs to be both melodic and aggressive as fuck (especially the vocals).

examples : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dew2ll4l ... ntrinter=1

Excuse me if this is too general and belongs in the black metal help thread.

Maybe Baptism will suit your fancy. Not sure if it has enough melody though.

Baptism was quite good, I'll listen to more. Horna was a lot more melancholic than what I was looking for but still, really good stuff - I'd heard of them before, usually paired with sargeist whom I will probably also listen to soon enough. I had never really listened to impaled nazarene past their later thrashier stuff, but I liked what you posted. Perhaps I'll look into more of their earlier works.

Most finnish black metal bands fit this mold. It's the national sound.

Is Behexen too obvious?

Seconded. By the blessing of satan is really blistering, fast and strewn with a ton of tremolo leads. Also has a few solos thrown in. Their third album is a a bit more atmospheric but still having the trademark aggression and tremolo melodies that define them. Their first album is kind of more generic 2nd wave bm, which i gather is not what you are looking for.

They aren't finnish, but you'd probably like Lja. Fairly raw, lots tremolo leads and agression:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Evg1pvWBcK8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrAgAgd3 ... re=related

Not finnish again, and maybe a tad too raw but S.V.E.S.T.'s full length is quite good. Hypnotic, catchy melodic riffs repeating in long pieces:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mc4ugWL_-YE

yeah, I've put off listening to a full behexen album for too long, will check out by the blessing of satan very soon, idk why I haven't .. Other than that, I seriously liked infernal war, those blast beats are staggering. The second Lja song was pretty cool too .. And just to clarify, being from finland is not a requirement at all, I just said that as I thought most recommendations would come from there, which many have.

Vitsaus, Sargeist, Warloghe, Mustan Kuun Lapset debut album Suruntuoja, Teloch and a couple of others.

In a different style but matching your description, Inferius Torment. Intense, fast, melodic, but not nearly as hideous and terrible as Behexen can be. Pretty clean production. Somewhere between Svartsyn and Aguynguerran, I'd say.

Do you really think IC Rex sounds anything like Goatmoon or SW? Especially the songs OP posted were pretty energetic, riff-based and straight-forward whereas IC Rex is really dark, oppressive and profoundly melancholic (and not in any beautiful, dreamy sense of the word!).

Some songs on Valonkantajan Alkemia have fast blasting passages (Väkivaltaisten Tulien Hehkussa), but even those sound nothing like the self-assured, forceful Satanic Warmaster.

Horna is certainly what OP is looking for, especially the Corvus era. Great song pick, germandeather.

Musta Surma is (ahem) a must.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2ZjNAHwL20

The riff that plays at around the 1:50 mark is black metal perfection.

VITSAUS without any doubt embodies those qualities you seek
The demos/double-CD compilation are probably just what you're looking for.

Also try some of AZAGHAL's early/mid works and everything from PREVALENT RESISTANCE

Vitsaus is magnificent. Prevalent Resistance isn't that aggressive, but otherwise recommended (not the third full-length though, it's sub-par). Azaghal is definitely aggressive enough, but only a couple of songs are melodic in the same way as SW for example.

Clandestine Blaze!!! Maybe a bit too Burzumesque, but anyways.. Try Youtube for Winter of White Death, one of the best songs by them if you want a quick initiation.

Not that melodic, but recommended, especially Deliverers of Faith.
