What are the best songs you can think of that are about metal itself? Basically metal "pride" songs or any song that fills you up with a sense of "metal patriotism". I don't want anything ultra-cheesy like 3 Inches of Blood or Manowar but tongue-in-cheek stuff like Skullview is okay. :)
Songs like this:
Metalkill the World - Skullview
Birth of Steel - Skelator
Arguably, this fits too:
Youth Gone Wild - Skid Row

A song about metal that's fucking amazing without being cheesy, quite on the contrary, the lyrics are actually good.

You think Manowar and 3 Inches of Blood aren't tongue in cheek?

On topic, Metalucifer. This song for example referrs to some great metal bands.

Totally cheesy, over the top, and awesome.

Helloween - Heavy Metal is the Law.

And yeah, Manowar is the most self-ironic and tongue-in-cheek metal band ever. I don't get how people don't get that.

Here's a few metal songs about metal I like. A couple of them might be cheesy to some but I don't care, they put a smile on my face and make me love metal even more and that's what matters.

Grave Digger - Headbanging Man
Venom - Black Metal
Iron Angel - Heavy Metal Soldiers
Manilla Road - Metal
Heavy Load - The Guitar Is My Sword
Mercy - Don't Stop Heavy Guitar
Brocas Helm - Here to Rock
Dawn of Winter - The Music of Despair Doom metal song about the greatness of doom metal. But that counts, right?
Running Wild - Chains and Leather

And then my personal favorite, which is Reverend Bizarre - Doom Over the World

Doomsday, why did you not mention Manilla Road - Crystal Logic? :)

Lyrics:
Spoiler: show
For all the sorcery that we have told to thee
They call us demons from Hell
But they refuse to see being of Satan's league
They'll never drink from The Well

I'm not burning, look inside
Crystal Logic's what you'll find

God's Magik shines so bright with Sword of Fire and Light
The madness never can win
If thee be pure of mind never give up the fight
And thou shall not burn in sin

I'm not burning, look inside
Crystal Logic

If Satan comes to thee then thou should call on me
And I shall be at thy side
For if thee do believe thy soul will be set free
God's words ring true in my mind

I'm not burning, look inside
Crystal Logic's what you'll find

We never ever will die 'cause Heavy Metal is life
And not eternal hell
We always will believe destroying Satan's league
We take a drink from The Well

I'm not burning, look inside

We live in confusion
A sign of the times
A morbid illusion
We deny thee Belial
The Holy Mother
And the Father of Light
Will never refuse us logic
Crystal Logic

O masters of darkness
Beware of our songs
For they shall destroy thee
And save only the strong
There's good and there's evil
There's no in between
For we shall slay evil with logic
Crystal Logic, Crystal Magik, Crystal Logic

Behexen - Black Metal Baptism
Spoiler: show
I chose the blackest robe
Shadow, darkness before the light
I threw away the false life
artificial and worthless
I kept only the deep mysteries of Satan

Black metal baptism opened the gates
to darkness and gave me the powers
of sorcerers
The sign of black pentagram
burned deep in my heart...

Satan! come forth...
in this black metal night
Master! bless this art...
dedicated only for you

The new cult has risen
from the ruins of the failed
The true black metal spirit
has never died...

One song per band was enough, I thought. Also the lyrics on "Metal" are more...prideful, shall we say?

Yes, Metal is a mandatory mention, but Crystal Logic deserves a place here for its lucid and reasonable perspective which is fairly uncommon in metal songs about metal.

Well, this one is not like "We Are metal, Metal we Are, for Metal we Die", but, Wizard - Iron War is a great track.
There is another too, but its kinda like about Hard Rock, but yet a GREAT song. Gotham City - Born to Rock Hard.
I won't make you suffer trying to guess out what Ohlsson is singing, so here are lyrics =)

There's also Viper - H.R.(Heavy Rock) and lyrics here.

Well, obviously if you're seeking lyrics that say about 80's Hard Rock/Metal, you can always have some Twisted Sister hahaha.

That one I've always found a bit weird. Firstly, why "Heavy Rock" and not Heavy Metal (maybe they called it that in Brazil? Viper was obviously a metal band, at least at the time.) Secondly, why the abbreviation (my copy doesn't have the full title, at least)?

To be honest, I always ask myself the same! But its because here in brazil, in early 80's, as far as I know, from early rock like Elvis to Extreme stuff like Vulcano(brazilian band also), they were all called Rock, at least here. Nowadays, most people still reefer to all genres of Metal as Rock. So I guess, as Viper kind of music was heavy as shit for their time(at least in brazil), they did Heavy Rock. But thats pretty questionable, as in some interviews, they stated they were heavy metal 'n stuff, and so I get confused.

Now bout the abbreviation, I don't really know much about it.
The song is pretty damn good tho!

Now bout the Songs about metal, I had this one in my mind, but didn't knew if you were going to like it, as it is sung in portuguese, but here it is!
Kamikaze - Na Trilha do Metal ("On Metal's trail" would be the translation or something like that)
And also, as I was listening to my "Good Ol' Swedish Metal" playlist, I stumbled upon this GREAT classic, Heavy Load - Heavy Metal Angels

Van Canto's "To Sing a Metal Song" is fun and catchy, but the lyrics are too much at times.
