That reminds me a festival last month which featured all of those bands and other atrocities. Needless to say I didn't go and waited for sideshows to see bands I actually liked, saving money, time and energy in the process.

So... It's been a few days since Soulfly's album was released... Are they going to end up being added to MA or not? Would be pretty silly if they weren't.

Yeah, when I saw that list of bands my mind went straight to Soundwave (said Australian festival) as well. Egads. Avoiding the 'festival' and hitting the sideshows (which were pretty good) was the only sensible thing to do. What really annoys me about those festivals is that the few half-decent bands they do bring out are buried in the line-up and treated as obscure. Limp Bizkit, of all the awful pieces of raw sewage present at the concatenation of awfulness, headlined. Meanwhile, bands like Watain, Meshuggah, Gojira, Kvelertak, Paradise Lost, Turisas, Cathedral, etc, were so far down the list of acts that you couldn't even read them on the posters. These are all mainstream metal bands, yet the organisers acted like they were revealing arcane underground sounds. Worse, the music press claims the festival truly represents all that the metal scene has to offer, with B-grade journalists putting together lame op-ed pieces about the concerning state of 'today's youth', accompanied by footage of SOAD. Wrong on so many levels. :fuck: Okay, rant over. Soundwave needs to die.

They'll only get on MA if Goatfangs sacrifices himself to Max Cavalera's shitty dreads.

I don't know about you guys but I prefer not knowing what musicians do for a living. It ruins the mystique. As good as it is to know they are down to earth people, like you or me, if I had a choice, I'd rather their personal lives being kept a secret. I think what they do in their own time is nobodies business but their own.

Some of us are aspiring (extreme) metal musicians. For us it can be helpful to know how the musicians we look up to are getting by, and what kind of decisions they have made in their personal life in order to be able to support themselves. The Immolation interview was quite enlightening in fact.

I agree that it's their business what they do, just like every other individual. But for some strange reason some metal-heads needs to be reminded that a band like Immolation (just an example...) is not rolling around in money earned from playing extreme metal.

It's metal from start to finish - not the best metal you may find around, but the metalness in undeniable. Also, it's a huge improvement over Soulfly's legacy in my ears.

In other news, Borknagar - Urd leaked and it kick ass and blows away Universal, probably it's their best since Empiricism. The addition of Vortex and the greater involvement of Lazare on vocals instilled so much energy to the band. Also, the songwriting is more fluent and more focused on the riffs and vocal harmonies/layering. The production is excellent too.

I just realized that a part of my aversion towards the extreme overuse of redundant capital letters in Genres, Instruments and Random Words is due to the fact that most Spam is written in that way.

But what if you're referring to Metal as an abbreviation of "The Glorious People's Nation of Metal"? Then it becomes the name of the place, and is acceptable to capitalize.

The new Soulfly is pretty shitty. ''World Scum'' got me a bit excited but the rest really doesn't do it for me. Yeah it's metal, but it still blows. :p

Anybody knows that feeling of satisfaction after a successful public presentation. I'm having that feeling right now, warm and fuzzy.....

EDIT About the new Soulfly album. Yeah, it isn't anything special. Just your average tough guy metal formula. World Scum got me interested, but not excited. But after hearing a couple more tracks, I can safely say that I'm not impressed. Metal needs hooks. And Enslaved doesn't have any.

Yeah, its not bad, but its just kind of... Eh. Some cool moments, but it failed to grip me. They'll be added for sure I think, though. I dont see anything wrong with adding them based on that album.

Easily the best thing Max has done in more than twenty years though. I know the bar is pretty low, but it's nice to see him writing metal again. There is the occasional nu-esque moment but overall it is metal through and through

Dunno, I'm not a big Sepultura fan myself so I'm not really surprised that I don't like this Soulfly album, even if it's the best thing Max had put out in years. Also not a fan of the tough screamed vocal delivery. Give me the vocals on Schizophrenia over this everyday.

True. Besides, most peoples' day jobs are really boring and shitty. yeah, I have a couple of friends in a field that they really like and they do interesting stuff, but they're by far the minority. Why would I want to think of my favourite musicians as plumbers, or pushing papers around a desk, or bickering with their department colleagues via e-mail? ugh...no thanks.

I got a free ticket to a show tonight, full of bands I've never heard of with names like One for the Butcher, Get!wise, Renounce the Throne, My Hollow and Blacktop Recess. I've never heard anything on the bill, but nothing sounds too promising. The guy who gave me the ticket is in one of the bands, and he was so enthusiastic and friendly that I feel that I should go, just to drink and say hello.

Caesar's last words have also been interpreted as "To hell with you too, lad!" I like that one better. And it still fits the context. :-P

It's like the Death Magnetic syndrome: they released a metal album and just cause it's metal people are praising the shit out of it. DM is one of the most mediocre thrash albums ever, pure shit from start to finish.

It'd be kind of hard to describe Death Magnetic as thrash. Songs like "Cyanide" would fit better on Load or something.

As for the Soulfly, yeah, it's bad. It makes even the most Dark Angel-plagiarizing revival thrash band look worthwhile in comparison.

I may go and see them in April. Past few times I've seen them though they've been very consistent, in a good way. I'll also be seeing Despise You the day before, so I'll probably end up not going.

Indeed. Which means Vlachos is busy booking his plane ticket to Montreal for this summer, I think... ;)

Genres of Metal music should be capitalized out of respect to metal. Genres of other kinds of music should remain uncapitalized. Also write band names in ALLCAPS, album titles underlined, bolded and italicized, and song titles in zalgo text.
