Mindrot is awesome. They can be both crushing and carve out a unique atmosphere.

Both those QOTSA albums are very different, as they all tend to be. Atomic Bitchwax kind of reminds me of the first release. Got it for my brother as a gift because I know he's really into QOTSA and he really likes it. As for Rated R (one of the best albums of all time in my opinion), do you know of Nebula. I mean, Rated R is so diverse that its hard to recommend a band that sounds like that album, but I definitely see a few similarities. Also, do you know of ex-bassist Nick Oliveri's band Mondo Generator (not sure if they are going to continue because of Nick's legal issues)? Some really great stuff, Tension Head from Rated R is a remake of a Mondo Genrator song, I think its called 13th floor. Does anyone else think that Boris's song "Statement" sounds like early Queens:

Start with Black Tusk and Bison B.C. Two stoner/sludge bands that play a quicker paced style similar to the likes of HoF. Check out early Mastodon if you haven't either as well (i.e. Remission, Leviathan, and their compilation release of demos)

I'm digging Mastodon's The sparrow, pink floyd influence there.

Gotta love early Boris. Way heavier than Sunn.

Pretty good instrumental doom/stoner. A band to watch. Also a very nice blog for doom fans.

IIRC I recommended them in another thread a couple of months ago but they deserve to be mentioned again. Horse Latitudes, men! Bandcamp link in the name. This band is brilliant in my opinion. The heaviness brought by the two bass guitars is mindblowing and the songwriting is most excellent considering they only use two basses and no guitars. Soundwise I would say it is Reverend Bizarre committing polygamy with Om and Ride for Revenge. This band deserves to go places.

Give us some good samples so we know what the band sounds like first.

Just checked it out, awesome stuff for sure. Vocals would make it even better, though.

edit - Checked out that blog and discovered another really cool band, Caltrop: http://theobelisk.net/obelisk/

Any more suggestions for Doom/Thrash hybrids. My band plans to (hopefully) release an EP in this style this summer, so it would be nice to hear other bands that play this type of music.

@Ludo74500

The song "Evil" has a total Electric Wizard riff, heh.
As for actual recommendations... Perhaps Datura and Craig Williamson's follow-up band Arc of Ascent are of interest?

Take a peek in Witchcraft's similar artists section. It's on their page. Some nice bands for you to discover there.

Looking for some trad/doom like Briton Rites or The Gates of Slumber. I'm pretty unfamiliar with the genre so feel free to recommend more obvious bands.

Looked at the similar artists for both bands on the site yet? Some great suggestions there.
I would personally recommend checking out Witchfinder General, Iron Man and Hour of 13, if you enjoy Briton Rites, and Saint Vitus, Lord Vicar and Black Pyramid (at least the Stormbringer comp), if you enjoy The Gates of Slumber.

This is a great suggestion but I just want to specify you'd probably enjoy The Ritualist more than the s/t debut. The debut gets by on atmosphere and mood a lot more than riffing. I mean don't get me wrong The Ritualist has atmosphere but he really outdid himself with the riffing and song construction on that one. Soldier of Satan...god damn I love that song.

Check Graveyard too, they're not on MA though, it's hard rock, but they're very great.

Not bad, but I'm not the biggest fan of the overbearingly heavy guitar tone - something that Ghost and Witchcraft and Graveyard, etc. don't utilize.

Looking for some Doom Metal heavy on melodies. I can't recall any exclusive albums that fit this, but I have listened to samples here and there. Any album by any artist that sticks out specifically to anyone that fits this?

I'm looking for something trippy and dark. Maybe even a bit droney. Like early Electric Wizard, Ramesses, Sleep, early High on Fire. Vocals or vokills. Hell, even something like Cathedral's first album.

Something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcfbItvEHqg or this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkuzJMZ8 ... re=related

Am I the only one who thinks Mournful Cries is the weakest Saint Vitus album? It just seems to lack any redeeming factors or standout songs.

I actually prefer Mournful Cries to V by a great deal. Dragon Time is one of my favorite songs of the Wino era. He has such a great voice for that one, and the story sounds like an awesome metaphor for Chandler being a gnarled old smoke-breathing bastard. Actually, I probably listen to Mournful Cries more than Born Too Late these days, just because I've worn that one out a bit. Hallows Victim is still my favorite of the material I own BY FAR. Need to pick up COD and Die Healing at some point. Chandler is just one of those guys who can't do any wrong as far as I'm concerned.

"Dragon Time" is one my favorite Wino-era songs too. And I love Mournful Cries. I would rank it just behind V and Born Too Late but it's not far from either of them in terms of quality. C.O.D. is easily the weakest Vitus album, because of bad production and too many fillers.

Chalk it up to personal taste, none of those songs grabbed me. I think Reagers is a much better vocalist than Wino though. He was amazing on Die Healing.

FUNERAL DOOM METAL

Where to begin with? I am familiar with bands like Ahab, Thergothon, Skepticim and Shape of Despair. Any recommended bands that would be a good start to continue my long of interest in exploring more on doom metal?

First two albums of Mournful Congregation for the dark and peaceful type.
Both the first demo and full length of Worship for CRUSHING DOOM.
Funeral's Tragedies is quite a strange one, classical guitar interludes here and there, a female singer that seems devoid of the will to live and everything tuned in standard (?) yet the music is demolishing. I would say it's kind of goth but not really.
And my favourite one: ASUNDER, there's no words to describe such a beast, it's one of the best bands not only in funeral doom but in the whole genre of metal itself to me.

And that's as far as I go, taking away Ahab and SoD which I don't like at all, the ones I posted plus your list pretty much sum up all I like in the funeral doom genre.

Well, do you prefer "prettier" or "uglier" funeral doom? For the former I would personally recommend Comatose Vigil and for the latter Wreck of the Hesperus. Now as for Comatose Vigil it doesn't matter which album you choose but for WOTH I have to say Light Rotting Out. While there certainly is an abundance of keyboard-driven, easy-on-the-ears funeral bands it can't hurt exploring the more morose side of the genre as well.

They are a little harder then QOTSA but have similar spacey melodies
