Yeah, Fragile is a classic too. What the hell?

CRUCIFY HIM! Haha naaahh I think he must have just been in a hurry to get to his real point about Tool and that sort being lumped in.

Whatever, it inspired me to put on some Yes which I haven't done in awhile. I'm a huge fan of Relayer but its in my car so...Close to the Edge it is.

You could set your watch by FSM schoolin' people on Swedish heavy metal and their vocalists. Its true though, In Solitudes vocalist sounds really reminiscent of those old Swede bands. Charmingly flat? Is that a thing?

Coolest thing about prog rock: the super layered sound leads to always finding new bits to appreciate. I always considered "I Get Up I Get Down" the low-point of Close to the Edge but those swelling organ sounds at the end are so damn dramatic and really build the tension for the next part that crashes in.

(Sorry to post instead of edit, for some reason if I try to quote or edit on my phone it loads everything except the submit button)

Oddly, I bought Close to the Edge a long time ago but never listened to it... huh.

Part of the reason I have trouble breaking into other music, even though I want to, is that there's no site like this one for other genres. Also, when you know nothing about a genre of music or it's sub-genres, how do you know where to start? How do you know what's considered good?

Back in the '90s, when I was first really trying to delve into electronic music, pretty much the only option was to actually go to a physical record store ( :o ) and endlessly flip through albums, looking for things that seemed interesting, then using your guesswork and intuition to the best of your ability. Sounds kind of masochistic now, describing it that way, but it was actually good fun. I also built up my collection a lot through trades on the Ambient Mailing List, where I could actually discuss this and that with other fans. It's funny how crude and stumbling that sounds now. Well, this was back in the internet's earlier years...

MA is fantastic, and it's frustrating there isn't something akin to it for other genres, but there are still ways. Discogs.com is a really great resource for certain fields, and YouTube can lead you down some productive roads pretty easily. If you hit upon something you really enjoy, use Discogs to look into the artist's entire discography, related projects, and associated record labels, and just build from there.

@Metal_Detector: Haha I've done that with a lot of stuff, it really drives home what a whore I can be for accumulating music faster than I care to listen to it.

Well, obviously, several of us would endorse CTTE as a certified Yes classic. All killer no filler as far as I'm concerned, 3 awesome songs in less than 40 minutes. Obviously you'll want to be in the mood for prog rock but you should check it out and let us know. I dig Fragile to a point but those short "interlude" songs have always bugged me. Relayer is kind of under rated I think, since its sans Wakeman, but that drove them to make it even more guitar oriented than normal which is awesome. I remember reading somewhere that when they played the opening track as their concert opener people thought they had completely lost it.

Chris Squire will always and forever be the highlight of Yes for me. He plays bass like a man possessed and uses such a fucking MEAN tone.

lol I didn't make out with a chick until like two years ago (age 19). I ate her out but she ended up puking alcohol into the toilet and we called it quits... she got pissed at me for something I said and I never got to third base :(

But yeah, you're still young at 17.

Will do.

Probably not a classic, but what can you tell me about Drama? I bought it at a record store for a dollar a long time ago. Still haven't heard it.

Is Drama a Yes album? Sorry if I accidentally passed myself off as a super-fan, I pretty much just listen to The Yes Album, Close to the Edge, and Relayer.

FSM: I don't care for your tone! I was just trying to speak playfully, I definitely think charmingly flat is a thing. Its exactly how I would describe the girl who sings for Christian Mistress.

Haha, yes it is, but I don't think anyone considers it all that good. It's the album that came right before 90125.

I think the singer of Christian Mistress is far more interesting though. She reminds me of a more metal Johnette Napolitano.

She's very hot and Christian Mistress is rad.

Bassistneeded, your story is quite BastardHeady lol

Jonpooo, I like Chris Squire a lot, but Steve Howe is amazing as well! Have you heard Jon Anderson' first solo album, Olias of Sunhillow? Quite good.

I find it disconcerting how often random posters tell everyone about their lack of ability with women. I never thought of metalheads as doing any worst with women than anyone else.

I think there's more of a correlation between the type of metalheads this forum draws (obsessive, I'm not exempt) and being virginal than just being a metalhead. Take that as you will. I lost mine when I was 25. (I'm 25)

Toni Tony Tone: Nah man I haven't taken a leap of faith with anybodys solo albums in prog rock. I'll definitely look into it if you're vouching for the quality, although I'll say that his voice was never a highlight for me.

Get Em Out By Friday is so incredible. How cool is Gabriels delivery on this shit? And its sooooo groovy in the hook.

My main problem is just that I live in a pretty remote area and I don't have a car... that and I'm just fucking awkward around certain hot chicks.

Yep, pretty much. I harbor a serious fear of rejection and don't have a license/car even though I could/should.

Do you hit up your friends for rides a lot? Because I'd be nagging you too...

I've always fucking loved your user name, but people bring up their terminal virginity in the FFA on a bi-weekly basis and its just a fucking tired subject at this point. You're not going to get quality advice here.

Metal_Detector: Haaah that's awesome! You into Rush or King Crimson by chance? Two compleeeeetely different sounds and also super popular, I'm just curious and in a prog mood now.

If you don't need a car don't bother getting one. Getting a license always is handy though.

Rush is actually my favorite band ever, pretty much. I absolutely love everything they did up until about Hold Your Fire. Yes, I even consider Power Windows and Grace Under Pressure classics. 2112 is one of the first albums to get me into music.

Never tried to get into King Crimson though, but I definitely will.

Nah, not really. I only ask for rides to concerts and in that case I'll offer to buy a ticket for whoever drives me. And I know it probably gets annoying hearing about chronic virginity. Shit just gets frustrating and I thought the "wrinkly ballsack" joke would be mildly amusing.

I've got four Rotting Christ full lengths in the mail right now, I'm thinking I might just round out their discography. The only full length I'll be missing is "A Dead Poem" and the Non Serviam DVD looks really cool.

I was just curious about some of their lesser known releases since they have a lot of pre-Thy Mighty Contract material. I own a copy of Passage to Arcturo with the Dawn of the Iconoclast 7 inch as bonus tracks and it was decent, though obviously the band grew a lot.

Basically, does anyone have any input on the following? What the music's like, any redundancies between releases/if there's anywhere else to get these tracks, what they go for pricewise, etc, etc:
Decline's Return (Demo)
Leprosy of Death (Demo)
Satanas Tedeum (Demo)
The Other Side of Life (Split)
Ade's Winds (Demo)
The Mystical Meeting (the release w/ Apokathelosis and the Kreator covers)
Der Perfekte Traum (EP)

FSM: You MEANT it! I could see it in your eyes!

Haha, man, I don't think I could take tithead serious, even if I wanted to be mad about it. But I also can't listen to youtube links on my phone because my shit is like first generation "smart phone". I've never seen this band come up when discussing old Swedish heavy metal though so I'm definitely curious to check it tomorrow. I'm assuming its an extreme example in the vocal department?

M_D: Oh very nice! Yeah I got way into early Rush a few years ago and it made me curious to check out other prog acts. Nothing compares to them though. I don't much fuck with anything after Permanent Waves but I am obsessive over Hemispheres, 2112, A Farewell to Kings, and my favorite Caress of Steel.

King Crimson have honestly become my most listened prog band these days. They're not riffy at all but they still manage to sound reeeeaaaally heavy to me at times, but they can also be lighter than air, and switch between the two in a breeze. Everyone starts with the debut, and it IS great, but I've really grown attached to Larks Tongue in Aspic, Lizard (my god the "percussion" is so over the top, he's listed as playing "all sorts" and that's damn sure what he does), and In the Wake of Poseidon. Cat Food might be one of the "coolest" songs ever. Makes me feel like I'm strolling through a crowded city just looking dipped and fresh like some old pimp from the 70s.

Well...tonight is raping my somewhat respectable below 2 posts-per-day average.

Cool, Ill be sure to check King Crimson out. Yeah, today's doing quite a number on my 1.03 posts per day. I think I've posted more today than on any other.

Serious question: does anyone actually read or find value in my reviews? Lately I've been thinking of hanging it up after 400+ reviews after I get done with my remaining promos for some amount of time.

Serious question: does anyone actually read or find value in my reviews? Lately I've been thinking of hanging it up after 400+ reviews after I get done with my remaining promos for some amount of time.

Yeah, man, I like them and would miss them. They're pretty fair and level-headed, and we share a lot of the same tastes.

Why don't we just go ahead and make a 'Lonely Virgins' sticky thread?

We'd max out the post count and create a rip in the space-time continuum.

Well...tonight is raping my somewhat respectable below 2 posts-per-day average.

I post too much these days! DAMN, I'm posting again!!

About Rush, I like their stuff till 1982, Signals is a great album and I like Vapor Trails and Snakes and Arrows. Can't wait for the new one this year, it will be awesome, Caravan is a great song. But I feel they should do a prog epic song again, it would be amaziiiiiing. I'll say that 2112 and Hemispheres are my favorites though. I also have plenty of their dvds, Rush In Rio is simply amazing, one of the best live dvd ever in my opinion. I like that there's always something fucking special and absurd on the stage (Rio : washmachines, Snakes and Arrows tour : roasted chicken...). And they also play 3 hours, not every band can do that. Rush is baws!!

Razakel: who'll be the moderator??

BTW: I'm almost 22 and don't have a license and do not care. Fuck cars!
