On their official website, Summoning announced:

"After a longer winter-sleep summoning is back again and ow works constantly for a new release. We promise that in the near future we will regularly update the homepage again, so it will we worth the costs to check the page in regular intervals.

The present situation of Summoning:

In the past years we have worked on new material just very rarely because of different reasons (partly personal, partly being not motivated enough) but since the last months ,we intensified the work for new material and realised, that the old spirit is back again and we are very motivated for a cool new release and we are very committed in every terms of composing.

Meanwhile there are two songs which are fix starters for the album. 4 or 5 songs are in a more advance state and we composed riffs for at least 10 or 15 songs in a very early state. Btw. we still have one finished song from the last oath bound session which also will be in one or another way. so probably this time we are in the luck situation that we have more songs left, so maybe there will be some special limited fan releases beside the normal release, but this is of course just a wish right now.

We hope that until the end of this year most of the material for the new album can be finished. In the moment we have no concrete conception about the lyrical concept. All we can say right now is, that Summoning is still alive and middle earth will awake again."

With all the rumours going on about Silenus's (confirmed) heart attack and the band losing motivation to carry on, no words can say how stoked I am.

I think I'm more pumped to see what the artwork will look like than the music. The music I know will be great, but I want to see what adorns it.

So glad to hear that Summoning are back in action! Hopefully Silenius has made a full recovery and things will move quickly. One of my favorite bands ever, I hope that they continue to crank out stellar albums for years to come!

Not really. There are tons of great landscape or scenic artworks to choose from, and the last album is proof that you really don't need LOTR art to make it happen. Each Summoning album has an identity and the artwork is, of course, what plays the biggest part of that identity (at least to me).

Excuse me while I find the nearest mountain to stand atop and shriek my thanks so all may hear.

Wow, THIS is some excellent news. I was beginning to worry that they'd thrown in the towel, but damn, this is some juicy news. I hope it doesn't take them too long to finish off those songs. Still, just knowing that they're hard at work on a new album is enough for me right now. Hail Summoning.

Whatever new material they compose, I really hope it sounds like the Nightshade Forests EP.

I'd rather not. It's my favourite release by those guys, but I'm skeptical as to whether a band that is long past that phase could again write material of that style of equally good quality. My sole wish is that it will be less like Oath Bound; more material like Across the Streaming Tide and Northward is by all means welcome, but songs like Land of the Dead and Mirdautas Vras should never appear on a Summoning album again.

Those sorts of tracks give awesome contrast in small doses, but an entire album of that sort of thing might get kind of cloying. Still, good music is good music, so if Summoning theoretically ever did write an entirely non-metal album, I'd still greatly enjoy it if the material were stellar enough. Say if they crafted a masterpiece of dungeon synth scaled to absolutely incredible proportions...I don't think I could bring myself to be unhappy about that.

"Across the Streaming Tide," by the way, is one of the best songs they've ever created, and it kind of baffles me that I rarely hear anyone mention it. It's always OOHH SHIT LAND OF THE DEAD BRO.

And Nightshade Forests is indeed worship-worthy. It's probably my overall favorite release by the band, as well. "Habbanan Beneath the Stars" is another one of those incredible tracks that people rarely seem to touch on.

I'm probably the only one hoping for this, but I'd gladly welcome something that is a good contrast between Lugburz and Stronghold/Minas Morgul. A real drummer and some more of their old BM sound wouldn't bother me at all.

This is wonderful news! And I don't care what it sounds like (well, except I wouldn't want it to sound like Lugburz), I know it will be great. Though if it sounds like Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame, I won't complain about that, either.

This is good news, and certainly news I've been hoping for. But, I'm not too surprised either, since it seemed like more of a question of when Summoning will resume. To be honest, I'd be even more excited over an announcement of a new Ice Ages album, but I'm most certainly in the minority on that one.

Every Summoning album sounds very different to me. I don't compare them, and I don't expect to compare the new one either. Even if I think they did sound similar, comparison wouldn't do me or anyone else any favors.

He did not say that, John. He said they sounded very different to him, which is a long way from claiming that there is absolutely no likeness.
