MAAX (U.S.) Unholy Rock & Roll DIGI CD review by http://www.blistering.com

Image

By Justin Donnelly

Twelve months after releasing their stop-gap EP Six Pack Witchcraft, Indianapolis-based black metal rock ‘n’ rollers Maax are back with their sophomore effort Unholy Rock & Roll. Much like the progression shown between their debut full-length effort (2009’s Dawnbringer) and subsequent EP, Unholy Rock & Roll showcases another step up for the band, with their latest effort filled to the brim with ungodly rock ‘n’ roll anthems, presented in a suitable blackened manner.

The five piece outfit get straight down to business in a menacing and speedy manner with “Coldest Steel.” It’s immediately clear that production values have improved greatly this time around, with the layers of suffocation heard on the EP being lifted to make way for a more cutting and clearer sound. But despite the better production, there’s still plenty of rawness heard in the guitars and Tim Green’s vocals to please fans of death ‘n’ roll. Song-wise, there’s a nice array of riffs within “Coldest Steel” to keep things interesting throughout, and the level of aggression on offer at the start is sure to please listeners to no end.

Shades of Venom with a little more musical ability can be heard in the straight forward attack of the follow-up track “Fight With Fire,” while on the title track the band tone down their satanic edge enough (even if it’s just a little bit) to allow a bit more of their rock ‘n’ roll tendencies (which is obvious given the song starts with the sound of a revving motorbike).

Whether it’s deliberate or not is hard to tell, but the riff structure within “Do What Thou Wilt” does remind me of Mötley Crüe’s “Too Young To Fall In Love” in places, while “Maax” brings to mind Motörhead in both construction and lyrical content. “Rot ‘N’ Roll” boasts a lot of lead work which is well done, and is by far one of the album’s catchier efforts, and for that very reason stands out as a favourite, while the blackened thrash-like “Overthrone,” “Black Thrash Em’ All” and the mid-paced closer “One More Time” are the best the remainder of the album has to offer.

There are a lot of bands on the death ‘n’ roll scene these days, and while many of them claim to offer up highly energetic death metal with a genuine rock ‘n’ roll drive, few actually deliver. Maax is the exception to the case, with their Unholy Rock & Roll album more than living up to its name.

HAT (Norway) Vortex of Death DIGI CD review by pestwebzine

Image

By Adrian

This is the first time I'm listening to Hat's music, although they have released a quite well acclaimed debut album in 2009 on the same Abyss Records, and the band was founded in 1993, but I guess back then they were only teenagers trying to get to know their instruments as they have released the first demo in 2008 only.
Anyway, although their name could sound pretty funny, especially for English speaking countries, it really means "hate" in Norwegian, and what I like about it is that they are expressing this in their music also. Their music is full of hatred, raw, razor-sharp, as all bands playing this genre should sound. There is nothing innovative or groundbreaking on "Vortex of Death", but the guitar riffs are creating a perfect ground for an overall dark and freezing cold atmosphere that Hat delivers. There are not so many tricks used on this album, no influences from other genres, no compromises, only pure raw Black Metal skillfully composed. An album recommended to all Black Metal fans.

BODYFARM (Netherlands) Bodyfarm CD EP review by hellridemusicforums

Image

By Janet Willis

Expect classic old school death vocals with the obliterating down tuned riff assaults and machine gun fire percussion…and the classic death metal signature pig squeal here and there to bring in the classic but not simply reinvent the wheel. This motherfucker is a semi automatic in the hands of a bullied 15 year old suffering from a psychotic break, in other words it’s a: violent, ultra destructive, high energy, quick, brutal experience that turns humans and surroundings into dust when the structures and bodies collapse into mush and dust because of the amount of holes blown through them in a mere few seconds. It racks up bodies like a true massacre should and is absolutely intense to the point of inspiration to create a random afternoon of bloody chaos. “Handle with Care”, in the hands of the stupid and weak this might instigate an act of horrific violence!!!!

There’s something very dark and ominous in these tracks that induces fear even in those of us who scoff at it. It’s almost as if hearing the insane urges and emotions of a violent psychopath told through sound as they bounce back and forth between all out fury and obliteration and dark introspective silence and preparing to draw out some act of inhumane and unspeakable torture, especially in some of the screeching voices in the background on “Chaos and Wrath” echoing through.

Just looking at the titles of the tracks like: “No Place for a Human”, “The Smell of Blood and Iron”, and “Chaos and Wrath” and it’s not a huge step to guess that the contents are comprised of bloodbaths and concentrated hate. Imagine decapitating someone and standing over them while their body twitches, holding the still blinking bloody head in your hands, and what you’d possibly feel flow through your veins could be described accurately by any track on here.

MAAX (U.S.) Interview by heavymetaltribune

Image

By Hong Rui

Maax started out in 2006 as a black metal band, but over the years have grown to infuse more and more old school, rock 'n' roll influences into their music, with their latest release, Unholy Rock & Roll being the definitive release of their new sound. We talk to Brett, guitarist of the band to learn more about their transformation over the years, the writing of Unholy Rock & Roll and more.

HMT: Greetings Maax! The band was formed back in 2006. How did this drunken collaboration come about, and what made the band decide to start off as a black metal band?

Brett Schlagel: MAAX arose from the ruins of another band known as “Dyngyr” (pronounced Die-in-gear), which was also a Black Metal band. Everything about Black Metal we like; lyrical content, musical configurations, and overall sound so there wasn’t a doubt what type of band we would forge.

The band recently released the second full length album, Unholy Rock & Roll, and musically speaking, it is a far-cry from where Maax started off with. While Dawnbringer leans more towards traditional black metal, Unholy Rock & Roll presents a more fun side of the band. Was this an intentional move by the band?

It was very intentional, we have many influences and decided it was time to let those shine through on this release but still keep that edge and element that is characterized with black metal. We fucking love Black Metal but we also hold old 80s riffage on a high pedestal as well. We are all influenced by bands like Motley Crue, Ratt, Kix, Judas Priest and Motorhead but were holding those great aspects back in the beginning. “Six Pack Witchcraft” bridged the gap from “Dawnbringer” to “Unholy Rock & Roll” and did so quite well, it gave the listeners an idea where MAAX was heading. We still keep a firm grasp on our Black Metal roots, which can be found in several tunes on “Unholy”. Black and roll is what we have seemed to have evolved into to and it’s a fucking awesome thing to witness.

What was it that made the band decide to shift from a pure black metal style to one that incorporates elements of black metal and rock & roll?

I came into the band midway through the writing of “Six Pack” as a bass player, it was during that writing process that we just started to venture in this direction of old schoolery. Just because we played Black Metal doesn’t mean we hung out in the woods all day ha ha! We found this formula and it worked well. We enjoy the playing and writing the music definitely. “Six Pack” was the stepping-stone to what is now “Unholy Rock & Roll”. It gave our listeners a good inclination as to where we were taking MAAX. When it came to “Unholy” I put down the bass and grabbed the Les Paul. We unleashed the floodgates on our old school riff lockers and hammered forward with it. The turnout was unfathomably awesome. We still have our Black Metal ground but have gained that dirty sleazy rock and roll sound and vibe with big hooks, big leads, and frost bitten vocals.

Why the shift in direction rather than having a band set up with a different name to pursue music in different directions? Does this mean that the band will never go back to its black metal days again?

We are still MAAX and we will never lose touch with Black Metal. Black metal isn’t just in the music but in the lyrical content as well. We are currently writing some blackened tunes but are writing black and roll jams at the same time. It is safe to say that MAAX will never venture too far off the mark of Black Metal.

The music on Dawnbringer can be said to be more carefully crafted, while songs on last year’s Six Pack Witchcraft and this year’s Unholy Rock & Roll has a more reckless feel in the music. Were there any particular reasons behind this?

We are a live band and that is what we have aimed to capture on the last two recordings. There is still quite the effort that goes into crafting what is we do; writing, rewriting, rearranging, rephrasing, etc. We enjoy a lot of things about the “Dawnbringer” days but we also enjoy seeing a bigger response with this route as well. You know you’re doing something right when beers are flying, bones are breaking, and there is blood all over your guitar at the end of the night…but it isn’t any of our blood. We put a lot of blood, sweat, and more blood into what we do and with this newer style of MAAX it seems to get noticed ten times more. We enjoy playing the music and the crowd enjoys rocking to it, all in all that’s what any musician wants at the end of the day.

Image

Also, with the shift in musical style, how has it affected the songwriting process of the band? What was songwriting like before, and what is it like at present?

Before hand a skeleton of a song would be brought to the table and we would hammer it out and tweak it until it was just right, sometimes spending weeks and months on one song. Now there is a lot more involvement with each one of us. I may have a piece that really fits with something Kyle has written, we put them together and shave off the excess crap and develop the skeleton together but not without input from everyone, we all have our own personal influences and experiences that can better one another. Back in the day, if a drummer told me to try “this” instead I’d be less apt to try it, now with the line up we currently have, every suggestion is taken very seriously which has really opened up the doors for our future recordings. We still record our own things at home and hand out a cd to everyone at the next meeting so we can all dissect it to see what could be done better. Constructive criticism is key.

The band’s music currently reminds listeners of bands such as Barbatos and Abigail, with the perfect fusion between black metal, old school rock & roll and thrash metal. What are some of the influences that the band looked at when deciding the direction to go after Dawnbringer?

We didn’t look at any band or style specifically. We have big influences from the 80s; Motley Crue, Judas Priest, Skid Row, Slayer, and so forth. Honestly we aimed for as much as an original sound as possible even though some things are comparable. We know black and roll has been done before but MAAX hasn’t and this is what you get, a brutal sound that is gnarly, black, heavy, and balls to the wall just plain evil.

Purge of Depravity also sees the band presenting a more serious side, with the heavy mood that is present in the song. What is the intention behind the inclusion of the track on the album?

If you picked up on the more Lucifer-esque tone on this track you are correct. Good ol’ Aliester Crowley speaks over the haunting guitar work with “The Pentagram”. It is a look into our more serious side for sure. It is a segway into “Overthrone” which is one of the blackest songs on the album with an opening line of “We are wolves, satan in the flesh”. The intention was to remind our listeners that we are still the same MAAX from “Dawnbringer” and although we have a more “fun” feel and add humor into the mix here and there, we are still very serious with what we do.

The production quality on Unholy Rock & Roll is markedly polished compared to last year’s Six Pack Witchcraft, and the members’ playing has sharpened considerably. Was this an intentional effect on the part of the band?

The production quality was intentional, “Six Pack” was meant to have that low-fi sound familiarized in the Black Metal genre. With “Unholy” there were more things that needed to be pronounced so a low-fi mix wasn’t too much of an option unless we wanted to sacrifice certain aspects of the tracks. I did most of the lead work on this album and wanted to bring a more precise 80s solo element to the album specifically trying to capture the styles of Slayer, Randy Rhodes and Zakk Wylde, as well as Mick Mars.

On top of the usual Satanic and Luciferian themes, the band has also incorporated a sense of drunkedness in the music on Unholy Rock & Roll. How does the band balance the themes present on the album, and where does the band draw such inspirations from?

I feel we keep that balance in check. We draw from our own experiences on every aspect of this recording. We love booze, beer, bitches, and good ol’ Lucifer. The balance on the album is what we do in everyday life.

Some of the band members have mentioned bands such as Motley Crue and Ratt as personal influences. With the black metal scene mostly being “anti-trend”, has this affected the fanbase of the band?

For every fan we lose we gain 15 more for the reason that the 1 left. You either like the music or move the fuck on, that’s the bottom line. Yeah we definitely have our influences but if you liked the music before you found out what we jam to daily then it’s your loss, not ours.

We have come to the final section of the interview, the last words are yours!

I just want to raise a few MAAX beers to all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes of MAAX. Dan Ferguson of Abyss Records and Dan O., Clawhammer PR, and all the MAAX Bastards out there keeping us afloat by picking up our merch and cds! Without our supporters we wouldn’t be able to do what it is we love to do. Thanks to all there at the HMT and the interest in MAAX! Check us out at Facebook.com/maaxmetal and give us a “like” to keep informed on MAAX news. Also visit officialabyssrecords.com for official MAAX gear! Cheers and beers!

Diabolical (Sweden) Ars Vitae CD review by cosmosgaming

Image

By Sergio Fernandez

DIABOLICAL is without doubt one of the bands of higher quality in their extreme style in the old continent, but unfortunately, since 2004 his appearances have been few and drabs in large part due to the hard work of its lead singer Sverker Widgren in their other bands and his own studies Necromorbus.

In addition, these Scandinavians turn 15 years since its inception back in 1996, and celebrated with the release of new material after his excellent "The Gallery of Bleeding Art" three years ago.

Well, DIABOLICAL return with "Ars Vitae," an album consisting of 17 tracks that mix the new recordings and songs recorded live.
All the songs sound better than ever, with production of course, has been made in studies of Sverker, so the band has known how to adapt their powerful sound to new technologies like a charm. A good example is that the live songs have a sound that seems to have been recorded in a studio.
Of the new tracks we highlight "Eye", an outstanding issue that we can enjoy DIABOLICAL pure, while in the last three issues of "Ars Vitae," we can enjoy an interesting change in their sound with a voice and a style closer to Black Metal.

DIABOLICAL always clear what is a band that never disappoints, and although it does not take too much stuff, all you create is a sublime quality in an aggressive Swedish Death Metal without any palliative.

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) Rot.In.Pieces Demo review by metalteamuk

Image

By Paul Maddison

Swedish band Corrosive Carcass were formed in 2004, and guess what, these guys are another of the current wave of bands playing the classic rotten old school death metal. But to all the cynics, hey, who cares, this is good authentic stuff!
The production, the vocal style, the attitude and overall feel has you thoroughly rooted in 1989/1990. If you have the choice of going rotten, then this is probably the closest you’re going to get to an old recording. The guitar sound is thick and meaty, the drum sound a little thin, a vintage recording for sure. Of course when it is produced in the drummer’s apartment, what else can you expect? The songs themselves leave nothing to the imagination; there is chaos and groove, like the wonderful breakdown during ‘Self Mutilation’, which does not give you much time to recoup to when it goes mental. ‘Awesome Nuclear Power’ displays much early Autopsy hero worship; in fact this would be the closest comparison to this cool racket, or even the demos of Nirvana 2002.
This release is raw, fast, aggressive and authentic to the max.

BANE (Serbia) Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness DIGI CD review by Zlabog

Image

By Zlabog

A more than decent start!
After hearing this album, it is no wonder why so many labels cooperated to release this album on CD, Digi-CD & MC version. BANE, a rather unknown Serbian Extreme Metal band in the underground scene, with this album might turn everything 180 degrees.
Since this is the first review for this album, let`s start off with a quick introduction. From their formation in 2006, after one Demo in 2007 and a short EP in early 2010, the band finally presents us their first full-length album, and it was well worth the wait.
“Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness” was recorded in HellSound Studio (Czech Republic), and was recorded/mixed/mastered by Honza “Butcher” Kapak, who is previously known for his works in Judas Iscariot, Nargaroth, Maniac Butcher, (etc…) and for being the mastermind behind Avenger (CZ). The artwork is done by Marcelo Vasco (Belphegor, Gorgoroth, Satyricon, Vader, Keep Of Kalessin, etc…), so there is no need to comment that part of this release, as it really is perfect.
Since the album concept is divided in 3 parts, let`s review them separately.
Chapter I – CHAOS:
The album starts off with a rather typical sounding intro – orchestral instruments, choirs, melodies and harmonies that predict evil is near. After the intro finished, and the second song kicked in the 20th second, it was indeed – Chaos. Clear production, pummeling double bass drumming, razor sharp guitars, with various growls & screams all over the place. Fast, furious & precise, a perfect mixture of Black/Death Metal, the band clearly combined elements of early Dissection, Dark Funeral and Behemoth to create a unique atmosphere and sound of their own. Generally the first third of this album is the most aggressive part of the album, and perhaps the fastest, with not too many tempo changes but yet no monotone parts – just “straight up your face” music – lots of blast-beats, fast double bass, evil guitar lines, and tones of various vocal types which covered everything from the more standard growls & screams, up to some shouts. The end of this era has a rather “creepy” ending, and without any blank spots leaves use to the next chapter…
CHAPTER II – DARKNESS
Starting of with a nice short acoustic instrumental, the band simply continues to bring good ideas, and the album continues without any unnecessary elements. Full of catchy melodies and various vocals, this chapter is much more richer tempo changes, combining furious Black/Death Metal with, this time, slower acoustic elements, which really has a nice ambient, specially after the first part of the album which was more about intensity and aggression. This part for some listeners may be considered a less “commercial” one than the previous, but nevertheless is very digestible and totally fits in the context and description – Darkness. It is slightly more dark and moody, yet retaining the atmosphere of the whole album, keeping it still very compact, but different than the rest. Musically a quite pleasant trip the band brought us.
CHAPTER III - EMPTINESS
The last part of the album starts of, contrary to the first two, immediately with a full song. This would definitely be the most melodic part of the album, with less various vocal lines, and with a more “standard” approach the songs, concerning the arrangements. By hearing only this part, the impression of a Black Metal band gets almost totally lost, as with the clean production and melodies played here, it sound too “commercial” for anything to be called “Black Metal”. Mainly this parts main focus is the simplicity of creating very nice and easy-listening songs, which have more of a Doom/Death Metal approach. Before the outro, the last song is more or less a Doom Metal piece – relatively slow and Melodic, very pleasant to hear after all the Black/Death insanity. The album finishes with another instrumental track, where only the keyboards slowly fade away in the cold depression…a perfect ending for this album. Again totally fitting everything into the concept of this masterpiece, the perfect word to describe the ending of the album – Emptiness.
Conclusion:
This album may not be the most original Black/Death Metal piece of art, but it is most certainly one of those albums where there is absolutely nothing bad to say about it. Absolutely everything is put in it`s place, where it should be. The production is perfect for this genre – guitars cover widely all the frequencies so they are neither too low or too high, the drums have a very natural sound yet the bass drum is high pitched/triggered, the bass can be heard in some parts where it plays some sort of lead. The length of this material is just enough to represent everything what should have been said and played in those 40 minutes of music. The diversity of vocals added a special “charm” to this recording which make them easy to follow and very interesting, and to have them combined so well with all the different musical elements really makes it unique, and ready for another listen.
All in all, “Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness” in an album which will positively surprise many Black/Death Metallers, both old school oriented and modern fans. And an extra bonus it that this album is available in different formats, which allows us collectors to purely enjoy the Underground in it`s best form.

CHRIST BEHEADED (U.S.) Open the Gates of Hell CD review by occultblackmetalzine

Image

By OccultBlackMetal

Christ Beheaded are a band from Indianpolis, Indiana that haves some members from some well known midwestern bands and this is a review of their 2008 e.p "Open The Gates Of Hell" which was released by Abyss Records.

Drums are very fast with alot of brutal blast beats mixed in with some slow to midpaced drumming, while the bass plaing is all rhythm bass with fast riffs that follow the guitars.

Rhythm guitars are mostly fast black metal riffs with some midpaced and slower heavy parts that have a blackened death metal feel and a small amount of evil sounding melodies on the last song, while the lead guitars when they are used are noisy and chaotic sounding black metal guitar solos.

Vocals are all high pitched black metal screams while the lyrics cover Anti Christianity, Satanism and death, as for the production it is very raw and primitive the way black metal should be.

In my opinion Christ Beheaded are a good black metal band and while this is not the most original sounding black metal that I have heard Christ Beheaded still put out quality Satanic metal and this is a band that I would like to see in concert, if you are a fan of true satanic black metal you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Open The Gates Of Hell" and "The Cleansing Ritual". RECOMMENDED BUY.

FESTER (Norway) Silence Remastered DIGI CD review by metalteamuk

Image

By Martin Harris

Having reviewed this bands debut album reissue earlier this year I was expecting more of the same, but it turns out that at the time the band was going through all sorts of trouble with their label and musical differences. Like “Winter Of Sin” this is released as a digipack with a bonus live track from 1991. It is a fair to say that Norwegian death and thrash acts in 1991 to 1995 were severely neglected due to the feuding black metal scene at the time. Interestingly enough Euronymous was killed during the recording of “Silence” catalysing interest from mags and zines for the wrong reasons hoping for some sort of scoop on the Euronymous incident, which at the time the perpetrator was mystery.
Anyway enough history back to the album. “Silence” was a departure from the doom death oppression of the debut as this remastered album has a cleaner sound though the chilling atmosphere is here in huge proportions. Quite why the original cover artwork has not been included is a mystery as the cover was more fitting than the new one. Beginning with “Dream” the acoustic guitar and bass kick/hi-hat work is eerie as the song shifts into a slow double bass kick that reminded me of the debut album by The Gathering (“Always”) before they brought Anneke in. The vocals by Rolf Simonsen are like a harsh whisper with a drifting echo effect on them creating a surreal and despondent feel, especially with the excellent lead. Bjorn ‘Tiger’ Mathisen takes on vocal duties for the harsher style used on “Silent Is The Raven” and are very reminiscent of Rotting Christ on their “Thy Mighty Contract” and “Triarchy Of The Lost Lovers” albums which is interesting as this album came out the same year as the former and three years before the latter. The pace of the song is slow but not doom slow by any means. Rotting Christ comparisons abound on “Frustrations” which is damn fine by me as the vocals have a spoken quality and lots of riff trickery and very subtle changes.
“The Maze” exemplifies why this band was unique at the time and I am slightly annoyed with myself for not picking up on them in the early 90s as I really did miss a treat. The song is as dark and oppressive as the debut and if anything there is an intimidating feel as each track makes you sit up and listen very intently. I know this was out before “Triarchy…” but the beat, emotion and delivery of “The Conformists” is so like that album it makes me wonder if RC got any influences from Fester. “Voices From The Woods” has some synths on it which add to the creepiness but as ever Fester surprise you with a tangential change to double bass that seems like its in slow motion creating a gloomy and moody ethos. “Growing Thirst” has some great riff switching as the song is the quickest on the album and again matched by ever changing riffs and beats. “Nar Noen Dor” was added originally because their label said the album was short on playing time. This song was put together by Tiger on keyboards with only guitar and a spoken vocal line in Norwegian (their only one without English lyrics). The song has a poignant feel matching Tiger’s mood after losing a friend to suicide. The song is a sombre moment on an album packed with solemnity and sadness. The live track is out of kilter with the rest of the album and whilst bonus tracks are needed for selling purposes I’ll never listen to it with the rest of this album as the two are just too disparate to compare. The live song is “Persecution” and sounds better than the live stuff on “Winter Of Sin” and is as you’d expect, gritty, raw and unfettered by modernistic sound engineering. I would strongly urge you to check out this bands music if you’re into old Rotting Christ, early Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, old Katatonia, old Opeth, early Anathema, I’m sure you get the picture now.

MUNICIPAL WASTE Frontman To Guest On PASADENA NAPALM DIVISION Album

MUNICIPAL WASTE frontman Tony Foresta makes a guest appearance on the new album from PASADENA NAPALM DIVISION, the band featuring members of D.R.I., DEAD HORSE and VERBAL ABUSE. Tony wrote lyrics to, and sang, one song and added backing vocals to many of the other tunes on the CD, which was recorded in Austin, Texas.

D.R.I. frontman Kurt Brecht, who sings in PASADENA NAPALM DIVISION, asked Tony over six months ago if he would consider helping out on the PASADENA NAPALM DIVISION CD. There has also been talk of Brecht making a guest appearance on an upcoming release from Tony's side project IRON REAGAN.
"I had one tune on the album that I was really having problems with," says Brecht. "I was not happy with my lyrics or the delivery on the studio recording. I knew the song deserved better. Tony wrote new words and changed the phrasing to really save the day."

The release of the PASADENA NAPALM DIVISION album should coincide with the arrival of the new MUNICIPAL WASTE LP as well as the 30-year anniversary tour of D.R.I. Talk about perfect timing!

PASADENA NAPALM DIVISION is:

Kurt Brecht (D.R.I.) - Vocals
Greg Martin (DEAD HORSE) - Guitar/Backing Vocals
Ronny Guyote (DEAD HORSE) - Drums/Backing Vocals
Scott Sevall (DEAD HORSE) - Guitar/Backing Vocals
Bubba D. (VERBAL ABUSE) - Bass/Backing Vocals

THOUSAND YEAR WAR (U.S.) Tyrants and Men DIGI CD review by http://www.brutalism.com

Image

By Death8699

This melodic death acts' debut here features a lot of innovation and creativity in songwriting. Their lineup on the release feature Hiram Lohr on guitars/vocals, Kellen Sharp on guitars/bass/vocals, and Fredrik Widigs on drums. An unknown band right now that needs to be well known especially within their genre. All of the songs are good and the whole CD clocks in about 40 minutes in length featuring 10 awesome songs. Amazing band and I'll tell you why. But first of all, I was stupefied by this brilliant debut. They caught me off guard into how wonderfully creative this album is.

From a musical standpoint, this album sounds a lot like Hypocrisy's latest release, but maybe even better. The songs entail unimaginable melodies that shine in triumph. A lot of palm muted riffs with gallops galore and high quality tremolo picking by Hiram and Kellen. The solos could use some brushing up, but the rhythms were unimaginably impeccable. Every song deserves praise. The vocals vary between heavy throat outputs that make it sound more like a death metal release, but also feature screams as well. Both fit the music intelligently and augment the guitar riffs in unison.

I liked all of the songs on here because of their impeccable design and music that's played out with vigor galore. No letting up here. They really nailed it even on this debut. It seems like this band was around for a while, but their origin was dating back to 2008. The guitars to me are what stand out the most. Not the leads, but the melodies. The leads were poorly performed unfortunately and I would've given the band an even higher rating if they stuck with only the rhythms.

The production/mixing was brilliant. Everything was well heard on here. The vocals both screaming/hoarse fit in well, the guitar was highly audible, and the drums well meshed in together also. They really did a high quality job on here with the music. Nothing is left out or needs to be fixed. I figure that this band as described has enormous potential and it shines through this album. Really mature musicians even though they're quite new to the melodic death metal genre. Definitely worth checking out for sure.

In summation, I conclude that Thousand Year War has like I said before has enormous potential and it is shown here on this release. I'm hoping that the band would continue to dish out quality music and needs to come out from the underground and be better recognized. If you heard this album and scored it below anything like a 65% out of 100%, then melodic death isn't your forte. This debut shines strong and is amazing as previously mentioned. If you're a melodic death freak like me, then "Tyrants and Men" is a definite worth purchasing. You'll be amazed by the riffs, especially if you're a guitarist like I am.

Rating: 9/10.

NOCTIS IMPERIUM (Venezuela) Nihil CD EP review by http://www.metalcrypt.com

Image

By Pagan Shadow

Venezuela is not a common country from which we hear extreme metal bands, is it? Well, Noctis Imperium is one of those different breeds of cats, bringing us their EP Nihil .
On this disc you'll find six studio tracks and two live ones. Noctis Imperium is a trio with Isaias (guitars, vocals and keys) as the band leader. Their musical direction is death/black metal. They also have a certain adventurous edge while playing a technical type of metal. The tempo is fast, the drums pummeling, tremolo-picking leads galore – that type of music. It makes no doubt that these are good musicians. I would have hoped for less overwhelming drum sound though, especially from the snare. They have some industrial/keyboard patterns here and there, and many songs come in with a solo. Noctis Imperium sounds as good and tight in their live performances, another proof of their musicianship. "Through Fire and Cosmos" is especially tasty and the sound quality is very good for a live recording. My overall favorite tune is "Unus I Hihil", for its moderate tempo, distorted arpeggios, keyboards and crunchy riffs. Then you also have "Maze of Torments" with its numerous crazy solos, crushingness and varied paces.
For those of you into technical death/black metal, a blast is awaiting you.

TORTURE DIVISION (Sweden) Evighetens Dårar DIGI CD review by possessed.ghul.org

Image

By Meden

Yes, the demo "With endless wrath ... ..." I liked very well by the Swedes. Whoever owns it can not, the download on their website. Yes, that's today. Now has the label "Abyss Records" and called the boys are back there. The Swedish Triple Trouble offers here but apparently to no new stuff, but summarizes three demos on a CD, but it also has it in himself. The nice thing is that Dr. Dan Swäno the sound has improved which, as it were metallic Schönheitschirug. The songs you have downloaded anyway from the side, but it's worth buying, because as I said, the sound is much better. And the tunes is simply great, because I love this direct, no-frills, but no boring moment to Death Metal. The basic structure is, of course, Swedish Death Metal of the early days, how come he is now back on, but TORTURE DIVISION bring us this much harder and faster over, cool. Who here does not shake the hair, you should stop listening to death metal. Songs such as "inhumane Traumatic severance" or "total death punishment" are total Skullsplitter. Who cares about all this modern shit, if there is still so great bands like TORTURE DIVISION, making it all really fun and believe, the next demo will be out in 2011, of course, to free download on their page.

CHAOSSWORN (Sweden) Chalice of Black Flames CD EP review by http://www.metalmaniacs.com

Image

By Janet Willis (Defecation of the Divine)

Another fireball of melodic brutality set aflame by Abyss records, this Swedish black death metal band releases a piece of rhythmic and melodic yet brutal metal EP. I’m not a huge fan of EP’s, but on a very rare occasion like this one it’s totally worth it. I’d like to say that hints of the brutal occult melody found on classic Dissection i.e. “Storm of the Lights Bane” comes to mind for me, but that’s up to great debate as are most comparisons. It’s been sadly quite a few years since I graced my ears with that album and the likes of Amorphis’ “Tales From The Thousand Lakes”, as I’ve been going more into my classic death metal days of gore and blood, blasphemy, and good old fashioned doom sounds. Every so often a band comes across my path like a blessed black cat and inspires me to revisit those sounds, maybe I gave up after Jon’s death and their final album, it felt a bit lost from what I’d been accustomed to, but nothing will undo that initial powerful presence as Emperor’s “In The Nightside Eclipse” or Mayhem’s “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas” also had on my ears. Some things are immortal to a certain extent, and Dissection is a band that falls into that realm.
This review is obviously not about Dissection, but there is a definite hint of that black/death melodic feel of the great days past felt strongly on here and that seems to be what memory struck me. Regardless of the accuracy of my memory, which might be as flawed as any, memories are very inaccurate and unreliable, but mark my words “This band brings that dark melodic feel back”. You can feel the blizzards blow, the frozen wasteland, and the rising of the eternally condemned. There is something as catchy and memorable with Choassworn as with the classics mentioned, you can feel the life swell within the sounds as the supernatural within your veins. For those who yearn to recapture that classic Dissection/ early Emperor sound and continually live frustrated shall be ultimately relieved to hear this band.
Chaossworn holds the torch to the majestic and awesome sounds of the past and Abyss Records seems to release albums with the intent to re-awaken that era. Maybe some have moved on, and rightfully so, but once an impression that deep has been left it’s very difficult to resist those nostalgic urges to hang on. Those catchy phrases and distinctively unique and evil, yet inspiring moments, will always tug at us and leave us in that state of permanent reminiscence. Shit…if the opening and main riff on “Crowned” doesn’t instantly make you drool and boil your heathen blood, than you clearly don’t belong here. I hope to Fucking Hell this band releases a massive full-length soon. If anything will resurrect the glory days it’ll be a band like this. I know a few friends of sorts from within my circle are reading this right now and will grab at the chance to check this out, hopefully they will and many others. If this shit sucked and wasn’t worthy of my time and words, it wouldn’t be here.
Do yourselves a favor and give this one a spin, it may be three songs, but it’s three songs of pure old-school joy. Nothing here is cliché, stale, borrowed, or uninspired, this is electrocuting and exhilarating menacing metal played the way it should be, so get off your spoiled pathetic asses and listen to something worthy for once, as opposed to a barf fest of knock off crap form a bunch of pussies with a hard-on to be scary and “brutal” or “cult”. This is fifteen minutes of your mundane existence that will actually count for something so get off your ass and check this stuff out!!!!!!

FESTER (Norway) Winter of Sin Remastered DIGI CD review by http://www.canadianassault.com

Image

By Patrick

Winter of sin was originally released in 1992 but thanks to the US label Abyss Records it is now being re-released so both old and new black/death metal fans can bask in the greatness that is Fester! Fester comes out of the legendary Norwegian underground and lets face it back in the early 1990's no other country came close to releasing great black metal like Norway. Fester was definitely ahead of their time and went against the norm {remember this was originally in 93 before black/death was blended together by so many} instead of the raw, primitive style that Norway was known for Fester played fast black metal but their guitar riffs/chords were a little thicker and even had a few solo's intertwined with the riffs to give them a death metalish feel and sound. Fester even went a little further to make Winter Sin a "classic" within the black metal scene by adding some avantgarde and melodic interludes to their already gloomy and grim sound. Even today in 2011 this still stands out as a great and original masterpiece. Definitely get this if you like original and dark black metal.

MOTORHEAD - RECORDED LIVE 1978 12" LP - $23.00 + S/H

Image

Limited Edition Gatefold of 1000 copies on 180 gram black vinyl
What's Wordsworth? is a Motörhead live album recorded in 1978 but not released until 1983. Wilko Johnson organised a charity event on 18 February 1978 at The Roundhouse to raise money to help preserve some William Wordsworth manuscripts. The Count Bishops and Motörhead were also on the bill, but for contractual reasons Motörhead needed to perform under another name. Lemmy came up with the name Iron Fist and the Hordes from Hell, which would later be used for the name of a studio album. During this performance Mick Farren joined them onstage for a version of "Lost Johnny".

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) The System of Nature review by http://www.metalpsalter.com

Image

By Chris

The Gardnerz spouts a Swedish brand of death/doom metal that makes the most of its melodious meandering within a slow-paced offering of well-crafted tunes that are fully sanctioned by the morose fan boy in us all.

While not as technically sound or diverse as fellow countrymen Opeth, The System of Nature squeezes out very last drop of solemnity from its saturated satchel of dark tunes. The vocals are the typical growling in the lowest of registers, but the mixing of throaty gasps and occasional breathy yells over music that defies conventional doom metal really makes the album. “Lady in the Grace” is a terrific song that has one hell of a main riff that really sets a sorrowed tone through the entire song. The vocal keeps drawing me back by switching from a somewhat black metal feel to a textbook death metal moan, which is perfect for this very moody album. I can’t even call this straight-forward doom metal because its position jumps from time to time. “Your Final Solution” actually reminds me of Slayer slowed to a virtual crawl, and that alone makes for an interesting blueprint.

I like the crawling-through-barbed-wire feel in these tracks as it seems to really carry the band over the anticipated pigeon-hole many bands of the genre fall into by either lump comparison or personal influences. Very rarely does a band ‘get into’ this style for hope of financial windfalls or delusions of grandeur; it’s a labor of love all over and The Gardnerz seem to be very good at what they’re currently doing because they believe in the music whole-heartedly. I usually steer clear of the lower registered vocals simply because I enjoy hearing the words enunciated at all points, but Niclas Ankarbranth manages to encompass both discernable vocals and a death metal attack that finds the perfect medium and passes the muster.

It’s a good thing to see Sweden on the map for some music of this style; the black metal exporting has to be tiring for that country by now! One listen to “Shift in Thought” and the odd vocal in it makes you realize that The Gardnerz may not be perfect, but they are most definitely interesting and warrant inclusion in your thought banks. I don’t think you’d be disappointed by expected the expected, yet reveling in the surprises and subtle nuances that set The System of Nature apart from the mundane or generic bands regurgitating the same thing.

PASADENA NAPALM DIVISION (U.S.) P.N.D. EP CD review by http://www.mariosmetalmania.com

Image

By Mario van Dooren

PASADENA NAPALM DIVISION is a new band featuring members of D.R.I., DEAD HORSE and VERBAL ABUSE and they releasd their debut EP at the end of 2010 via Abyss Records. PASADENA NAPALM DIVISION is: Kurt Brecht (D.R.I.) - Vocals, Greg Martin (DEAD HORSE) - Guitar/Backing Vocals, Ronny Guyote (DEAD HORSE) - Drums/Backing Vocals, Scott Sevall (DEAD HORSE) - Guitar/Backing Vocals & Bubba D. (VERBAL ABUSE) - Bass/Backing Vocals.
It's a long time ago that I reviewed a crossover band because normally I only focus on power/true & progmetal. Than why this review?? Simply; when I was reading the bio and I saw the name of Kurt Brecht it was clear for me that I had to review it myself; simply because his other band D.R.I. is just one of the few hardcore bands that still have a small place in my (once big) crossover heart!
Also after listening to this MCD is was clear by which band this new society was influenced; D.R.I. and a bit of Verbal Abuse. Maybe also by Dead Horse but im not familiar with this band. This MCD contains 6 songs in the oldschool crossover tradition. Only difference between PND and D.R.I. is the fact that PND has much more guitarsolo parts. So if you're into real oldschool hardcore than you should check this band out!! Looking out to see them live someday! For fans of D.R.I., Verbal Abuse, No Mercy & Attitude Adjustment.

BODYFARM (Netherlands) Bodyfarm CD EP review by http://www.slugmag.com

Image

By Bryer Wharton

Bodyfarm = Vader + Pestilence + Bolt Thrower
Sometimes we all have the need to go to a fancy restaurant and dine on fancy goodies, but really, all you need is a good old burger to satisfy. Bodyfarm offer up simplicity in good old 90s death metal, heavy in the groove department and not fully focused on blazing speedthe band's debut runs in at around 17 minutes, though it's quite the fulfilling 17 minutes. The self-titled album offers some boisterously beefy death metal riffing, pounding drums and straight-up death metal guitar soloing. There is always comfort in what you know, constantly looking in music to find something new and exciting is eventually going to get you lost. The production on this EP is damn fine and the bass is tuned in perfectly to give the songs the heaviness they need and showcase the outright riff-machine Bodyfarm delivers.

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) Rot.In.Pieces Demo review by http://www.nocturnalhorde.com

Image

By nocturnalhorde

The new wave of Swedish Death Metal keeps on rolling and that might taint the picture of reviewed releases here in a little while, at least if the releases keep on coming in as lately and if they keep the quality! Corrosive Carcass was formed in 2004, hailing from Storvik, a good deal North of Stockholm, and this is their first demo showcasing some grim and raw Death Metal.

Grim and downtuned riffing is powering the beast and is kicking the music ahead, a good blend of buzzsaw riffing and a more melodic approach, the bass is present up front and it really suits the music and adds to the quite dirty almost punky atmosphere. The drumming is kicking it off with blastbeats and a good dose of cymbal blitzkrieg - the backbone delivers controlled chaos, again a fitting dimension to Corrosive Carcass' universe. The growled, at times puked vocals is again spot on in this raw universe. The tracks are a good mix of shifting paces, straight on madness and chaos and controlled pieces and guitardriven melodies - quite good work. On top of that a unique and disturbing atmosphere, that makes me think of old Necrophagia and Autopsy.

This is a pretty serious demo with some really good music on it, Corrosive Carcass do have an attitude no other bands have right now, and on top of that they are delivering some stable and hardhitting Death Metal with a nice twist. Believe me when I say that we are going to hear a lot more from this band, unless they use 6 years on writing material for their next release that is!

HAT (Norway) Vortex of Death DIGI CD review by Extremonia Zine

Image

By Carlos Rendo

It's been several years since the formation of these Norwegians in 1993, but were inactive during the period of 10 years (1996-2006). Interestingly, his productions were released after their reunion. these are Ut Ebber Livet" demo 2008, "The Demise of Mankind" his first CD and "Vortex of Death" at hand. while are many exponents of the style, Hat has always developed its raw black metal act with a Total old school and classic Nordic. Here we have a good nod to the above Satyricon, Emperor, Immortal with issues which become angry concise and dark halves representing a declaration of chaos destruction and death. With great simplicity, total black atmosphere and corrosive guitars and vocalization Hat An integrated product achieved without ignoring the excellent cover art and all your booklet.

This review was originally written in Spanish and has been translated using Google Translate. The original review is listed below...

For those as yet uninitiated into this Swedish black thrashing cult, Ars Vitae is a nice neo/retro sampler for Diabolical, one of the more intense bands you’ve never heard.
Since 1996, this talented Swedish outfit have been delivering the black thrashing goods on a high octane level, combining with excellent, maniacal glee the best elements of melodic blasphemy and razor sharp speed metal goodness.
Ars Vitae opens up with a handful of new tracks, recorded in the Watain/Funeral Mist home studios Necromorbus, and it shows, providing a pitch black presentation of Diabolical at their ever-top form. In addition, the album contains an entire live concert, as well as a remaster of the band’s Deserts of Desolation debut from 2000.
All in all, Ars Vitae is an excellent way to be exposed to Diabolical, a band who really should be bigger than they currently are, given the consistent level of quality delivered by the band for so many years. Grimly produced, musically involved and more serious than a heart attack, the proficiency of Diabolical shouldn’t be denied any longer by the legions of longhairs who really should be more aware of this Swedish quintet.
Hopefully Ars Vitae will change this fact.

After six years of demos ,Entrench released their debult album "Inevitable Decay" ,Pure old school thrash metal to the vein ,the trio does a great job with killer riffs ,hard and fast sound , you won't be dissapointed with this maniacs ,i can notice some influences of destruction and sodom ,with a lillte bit of progressive sound as well, definitely this cd is one... of my favorites ,it is convincing in all aspects .
More important it is a solid proof that Thrash metal is still going strong .A powerful release ,Thrash 'til death!!

ERUPTED (Sweden) Faces of Death EP review by http://www.steffmetal.com

Image

By Steff

I’m having a bit of an “old school” death metal homage week here at Steff Metal HQ – first, the Finns Sadistik Forest and their album Death, Doom, Radiation, and now this absolute gem of an EP from Swedish death metallers Erupted.
It’s called Faces of Death, and it’s only three songs long, but it gives enough of an introduction to make me eager to hear their upcoming release. The album contains two studio tracks, “Faces of Death” and “Hell Recreated”, as well as one live track, “Blazing Fire of Heaven”. The live track didn’t really do it for me, the vocals being a bit too gurgly in places, and – although there’s a killer classic death riff, it’s punctuated by a bunch of hyper-fast, scalding distorted noise that’s more grating than satisfying. The studio tracks more than make up for these minor failings. “Faces of Death” blasts out riff after catchy riff in true death metal style, with deep, punishing vocals and muted, trigger-free jackhammer drums. “Hell Recreated” reminds me a bit of Aborted – especially the vocals and the dynamic structure, switching from mid-paced to slaughterhouse in a matter of nano-seconds.
Lyrics deal with occult and philosophical topics, and the impossibly heavy, throaty growl of vocalist Daniel Ocic Sundberg raise Erupted over and above the death metal mediocrity.
You might have heard these boys before, but under a different name. Back in 2010 they were gigging as Carnivore, but they changed their name to avoid confusion with the late Peter Steele’s Carnivore. Said Daniel: “Back when we picked the band name, we actually had not heard of the earlier Carnivore, and once we did, we guessed that a local band using the name really couldn’t be such a big deal, we didn’t expect the promo to get us signed or that we would get a chance to actually record a full-length. But, as things have worked out far beyond our imagination, we want you to wave goodbye to Växjö’s Carnivore and give Erupted a brutal fucking welcome!! Same shit, new name.”
Erupted have signed to Abyss Records and are due to release their debut full-length this year. You better believe I’ll have an ear out for it.
Stream Faces of Death on Erupted's Faceboof page or Soundcloud page, or check out their Myspace page for regular updates.

THOUSAND YEAR WAR vox/guitarist HIRAM LOHR interview with sincityanimal on podcast

Image

Members:
Hiram Lohr- Guitar, Vocals
Fredrik Widigs- Battery(Session Drums)
Pablo Magallanes(Session Guitars, Bass)
Genre: Death/Black Metal
Hometown: Anchorage, AK
Record Label :Abyss Records
The history of Thousand Year War began in the late winter of 2009 in
Anchorage, Alaska with Hiram Lohr (guitar, vocals) and Kellen Sharp
(lead guitar, bass). While hashing out ideas they began to write songs
that would become their first ep. This was comprised of 4 songs and
was recorded by Brett Wehmeyer at Runefire Recording Studios in
Anchorage, AK. With the help of Brett and session drummer Mortaeus (Ax)
they were able to get their first recording off the ground. After
receiving good reviews and label interest from their self-titled ep,
Thousand Year War decided to take things to the next level and record a full length album.
Hiram and Kellen raised enough funds to record with Ryan Brownell (Garden
Studios).In
a period of 7 days they recorded vocals, guitars, and bass to found
session drummer Fredrik Widigs (Angrepp, Desultor, The Ugly, Live Witchery).
After transposing all the songs to Guitar Pro they were sent to Fredrik to
record the drum tracks at Prime Cut Studios(Sweden) in the summer of ‘09
Shortly after Kellen and Hiram layed down the tracks to what would be
the full length “Tyrants and Men”
From the summer of 2010 and beyond, Fredrik came up with an amazing
mix that sculpted and formed the final sound of "Tyrants and Men".
This mix was presented to Dan Ferguson of Abyss Records and Thousand
Year War was offered to sign.
Since then Kellen was removed from the band and Hiram continued to work with Fredrik W. and
took on Session member Pablo Magallanes(Live Witchery) for the upcoming 6 song
EP Vulture Eyes which TYW plans to release in Summer 2012
The first pressing of "Tyrants and Men" is available as a
digipak. All Album art, and websites are designed by Luciferium War

HORDES OF NEBULAH (U.S.) ...And Blasphemous Night Shall Fall CD review by occultblackmetalzine

Image

By OccultBlackMetal

Hordes Of Nebulah are a band from Crawfordsville, Indiana that has been around since 1999 that plays a very raw form of black metal and this is a review of their compilation album which was recorded between 2002 and 05 known as "And Blasphemous Night Shall Fall" which was released by Abyss Records during the year of 2008.

Drums are very fast and brutal with alot of evil sounding blast beats, while the bass plying which is low in the mixing sounds very dark with the riffs following the guitars and on some of the songs there are some ambient style effects thrown in that gives the music a depressing feel that also adds a little bit of an avant garde sounding piano.

Rhythm guitars are mostly fast and primal black metal rhythms in the riffing with a good amount of midpaced playing mixed in with some distorted reverb effects and a small amount of a death metal influence, while the lead guitars when they are rarley utilized are fast and raw black metal guitar solos that only appear briefly.

Vocals are all high pitched black metal screams with some deep growls thrown in on ocassion that bring a death metal feel to the music and on one of the songs there is some female vocals being utilized that are very dark dark and esoteric, while the lyrics cover misanthropy, war and nihilism with a true hatred for the nazarene and some of the infernal names being called upon in true left hand path tradition, as for the production it is dark and raw in the true black metal fashion.

In my opinion Hordes Of Nebulah are a very good US black metal band, and this cd proves that even in the early 2000's there was some great quality black metal coming out of this country, if you are a fan of true primitive black metal you should add this album to your collection.
RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Black Canonization" "Moontide" "When The Sun Was Bled Of It's Light" and "Reign Of Impiety". RECOMMENDED BUY.
