Sodom's "Remember the Fallen" from Agent Orange was always a good warm-up song I used to practice back when I was a beginner, pretty much got the entire song down the first day I tried learning it. Agent Orange was also the first album I bought too, so it just came naturally.

But other then that I would reccommend learning "(Under) the Pagan Megalith" by Gorgoroth off their Pentagram album if you don't mind a bit of Black metal, it's a great song to work up your ability to hit basic power chords at a fast rate. It's helped my picking/strumming endurance for some songs and even has that one riff towards the end that I always thought was Slayer-like, so it just sorta came to mind. Sepultura's "Inner Self" is also another good song to give a shot at, and its another song you can play in standard E. And as for death metal, I would reccommend any Death album really. Just pick any song, learn what riffs you can from it then move to the next song and keep practicing, hacking through riff after riff, song after song, etc. 'till you got 'er down and then soon enough you should be able to play songs by Possessed, Bolt Thrower, Sentenced and Autopsy with little to no difficulty.

I hope that helps, it's basically the path I took a few years ago and it's been good practice, just keep your ears open and don't take shortcuts, it'll only slow you down in the end. Stay Metal and Hail satan!

... Also now that I'm listening to it, "Let there be Death" by Onslaught is another good song. Very simple, yet catchy at the same time.

I play a lot of early Lacuna Coil to warm up. Doomish gothic metal is just fun when you want to smack the shit out of your drums.

For Whom the Bell Tolls, the one song me and my 2 friends can Jam and do a respectable job at. Thank you Lars Ulrich for your easy drum pattern! Haha.

When I started drumming, I remember jamming with Death's Leprosy and Sepultura's Morbid Visions.
Even Six Feet Under's Haunted.... easy easy tracks :p

Good call on this one.

Bored or Mistress Of Pain by Death Angel are fairly simple. Slayer songs like Black Magic or Chemical Warfare you might also try. Walk from Pantera or Metallica's Am I Evil are some others.

Judas Priest - Grinder
Exodus - And Then There Were None
Megadeth - Symphony Of Destruction/Peace Sells/Sweating Bullets
Carnivore - Predator/Male Supremacy/God Is Dead
Sepultura - Inner Self

All easy and really fun songs to play imo.

Symphony Of Destruction wasn't hard technically, but It was impossible to be played with a metronome, I mean it has hell of timing difficulties, maybe I am too used to simple timing, but I'll try to do it with a metronome.
Edit : I am talking about the chorus part, it's just so hard to get .

If you like playing in D Standard, learn these riffs. these will help your timing a lot

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5OhmXKsxOc

make sure you use pull offs from 2 to 1. 2ˆ1, 0 2ˆ1 2ˆ1 etc etc.

obviously the insane licks aren't that simple :P

all of the old napalm death stuff is pretty simple. it's basically punk but way faster. you could also try to play some cock and ball torture songs. shit is heavy as hell but all very simple and primitive. the band jungle rot also has a lot of very easy songs to play.

oh, and pretty much any song on morbid tales by celtic frost. PRAHCREATION - OV THE VICKET

Autopsy - Ridden With Disease

probably my favorite warm up song to play, there's a lot of room to improvise rhythmically with it too if you are that kind of guitarist

Wintersun - Death and the Healing.

The solo isn't that easy but the main riffs and chorus are typical and easy to learn

Testament anything in between The Legacy and Souls of Black

Sometimes with parts like that, instead of trying to figure out which note lands on which beat(a very mechanical way of learning songs, which is supposed to be fun), just listen to the riff without a guitar and tap your foot to it. Get the 'feel' of the riff rather than the precise timing, and you'll have it down much easier.
