hey whats everyones favourite black metal riffs?

I was listening to Quintessance-Darkthrone today and it's gotta be one of my favourites, it has a great heavy pissed off sound to it.
Transylvannian Hunger is amazing too.

I also love Treibend im Menchenstrom-Wigrid
Endtime Sermon- Sterbend
Der Wanderer-Bergrizen (only like the first riff, the rest of the song kinda gets crappy)

I cant remember everything, there are soo many, just curious as to what you're fave riffs are

The first actual riff for Immortal's At the Heart of Winter is certainly up there for me.

Taake - Over Bjœrgvin Gråter Himmerik IV - 4:05

I don't know if I have a favorite riff, but that one, that one is something special.

Immortal - One by One; I love the main riff. I love a lot of Immortal's riffs actually, and I decided to look it up and learn it. Fuck that. A lot harder than it sounds for me.
The opening riffs from Wolf and Fear by Ulver are also fucking classic.
As well as several of the riffs from Curse You All Men! by Emperor.
And the most memorable to me is definitely the riff at 1:24 from Sons of Wisdom, Master of Elements by Blut Aus Nord. I love a lot of Vindsval's guitars to be honest.

If you want some riff madness try Tales of Eternal Dark or Profane Genocidal Creations by Dark Fortress. Those albums are just chock full of amazing, epic riffs.

i also always loved the riff in My Journey to the Stars by Burzum. Ye Entranceperium by Emperor has that one riff that leads into the end of the song and it is freaking unbelievable.

Satyricon- Nemesis Divina, the title track at the end when the song fades out and that heavy as shit part comes in, man, gives me chills everytime!

No love for I Am The Black Wizards? I don't even like black metal much and I can really appreciate that riff.

Might as well sort these by band and avoid repeats...

Mayhem: Chainsaw Gutsfuck, Freezing Moon, and Dark Night Of The Soul
Immortal: Tyrants, Beyond The Northern Waves
Burzum: Ea Lord Of The Depths, Lost Wisdom, Burzum, Beholding The Daughters of The Firmament
Darkthrone: Summer Of The Diabolical Holocaust, Crossing The Triangle Of Flame

Sadly I'm still not very well-versed in black metal beyond the basics...

Bathory-"Born for Burning" and "Raise the dead"
NME - "Louder than Hell" (It has that NWOBHM style feel to it that I like)
Tormentor - "Elisabeth Bathory" (Love the main riff, so dark and cold)
Mayhem - "Pure Fucking Armageddon" (The Ultimate blackest black metal riff imo)

Whenever I hear any of the riffs in Immortal's Withstand the Fall of Time I get the chills. Emperor has some really great moments too, like in Into the Infinity of Thoughts, Cosmic Keys to My Creations and Times, and Ye Entrancemperium.

The main riff from "Heaven's Damnation" by Dissection always gets me. I don't know why; it's not too interesting. I'll give a shout out to "Hans Siste Vinter" by Darkthrone, and "Alfadr Odin" by Enslaved.

The opening riff for Dawn's "The Knell and the World" is one of my favorites. The melody sounds mystical and cold.

All the riffs from the album Into the infernal regions of the ancient cult by Inquisition are my favorite.

The Codex Necro by Anaal Nathrakh has a main riff that encompasses so much of the essential black metal riff I feel it would be a crime not to list it. Granted, the other elements of the song may not, but this one is so chromatic and evil and buzzy.

I really like the intro riff to "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas". "Cursed in Eternity" also has a killer opening riff, as does "Freezing Moon". Man,this whole album is just chock full of great riffs. I love it!

Another one of my favorites has to be the one in Dark Fortress' "Stab Wounds" after the vocalist shrieks and the song really kicks in.

Agreed on Immortal - At the Heart of Winter is just one giant memorable riff-fest. And i'll second the Dawn song - "Falcula" and "The Aphelion Deserts" have some pretty top-fucking-notch riffs as well.
I'd also add the 'second' verse riff in Dissection's "Unhallowed". the one that begins "with lifted dreadful swords we swear allegiance to our lord..."

I agree with Adriankat on the Dawn riff (though I really like chorus riff too).
I shall put forward Burzum's Jesu Dod; it's hypnotic, and just dark.

this song is criminally underrated when it comes to riffing. Not very melodic or complex, but goddamn it sure makes for good headbanging black metal
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mAh_NSe9gY

also Marduk, Anaal Nathrakh, Belphegor and Necrophobic are some of my favorites when it comes to black riffing.

Here's a few of my personal favourites:

Marduk - Throne of Rats
Darkthrone - Dance of Eternal Shadows
Emperor - I am the Black Wizards

Absolutely brilliant songs with great riffs!

Getting beyond the basics, though some would surely consider greek band Varathron a basic, there is a stunning Celtic Frosty riff in their song Nightly Kingdoms from the album His Majesty at the Swamp. Actually the whole album is filled with amazing riffs, but this one just makes me cum.

Varathron is also criminally underrated, especially compared to its other Greek black metal counterparts

Not too sure about that. Rotting Christ surely are elsewhere when it comes to popularity, but other 2nd wave bands like Necromantia, Thou Art Lord or Zemial are on the same boat with Varathron. All great bands needless to say.

Probably the opening riff of Horna - Liekki Ja Voima. Blissful, hypnotic, atmospheric and vaguely sorrowful. The name means "Flame And Power", which I think describes the atmosphere of the song quite perfectly.

Sargeist - Satanic Black Devotion opening riff is a classic aswell. It's in the same category both stylistically and quality-wise as Transilvanian Hunger, and in fact I like the Sargeist riff more.

But "Sons of Northern Darkness" offers a bunch of amazing riffs, anyway.

Burzum - "My Journey to the Stars" is full of the absolute best riffs I've ever heard in Black Metal. No matter how far I got into the genre, pretty much nothing competes. Burzum's first 2 albums are pretty much full of excellent riffs.

The last two riffs in Emperor's Inno a Satana is epic beyond all human rationale. The way it all flows together is amazing and shows a great sense of compositional skills. I am the Black Wizards's "main" riff is also fantastic, especially the way it's used at the end of the song.

Freezing Moon is probably the quintessential black metal riff. Eerie, cold, majestic, it has it all.

No love for Sacramentum? The introductory riff of "Cries From A Restless Soul" basically showcases the band's ability to write all sorts of multilayered, polyphonic melodic riffs. More importantly, it's the riff that sold me on the band.

Other black metal riffs that particularly stand out to me are the main riff of "Norvegr" by Enslaved, and the first one from Necromantia's song "Black Mirror".

Drudkh's "Eternity", very simplistic, but I find it to be very catchy and a bit of a distinctive folk element.

And of course the aforementioned Rotting Christ. "Sorrowful Farewell" and the majority of the album Triarchy of the Lost Lovers have some pretty fucking epic riffs, great medieval atmosphere when mixed with the aesthetics (am I the only one that thinks that album sounds like it was recorded in some big cathedral? :P)

There are a bunch of riffs that I enjoy. too many to count. But since I just happen to be blasting this song right now, I thought I'd throw it out there:

Mgla- Gorza IV
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9T6ST0RsHFc

Come on.... How can anyone not think that riff is fucking awesome?
