Spirits, and others, though it's extremely kind of you to drop a link with the name, it would be great if you shared an opinion and wrote a descriptive word or two for each name and link you drop. It would save a lot of time for us who haven't heard a third of the bands named here.

I don't mean to argue, but how will it save any of your or anyone else's time? I mean, what sort of information would you like to see, and why do you think it's useful before even listening to a band?
I have not read a single description or opinion in this thread before clicking respective links and listening, because it's all about the music to me. All of the names are also in the m-a database, so you can get additional info if you come to like any of the bands listed.
Horns up!

1. When unable to listen to the music, for example, when browsing the forum with a mobile or a laptop with shitty speakers, a short description might pique my interest, and I could write the name down for later.
2. I don't have the time to go through every link to see if it's the kind of OSDM that I like, so a few words on each band would save time.

Even something like this might suffice for a description: "Incantationish riffs, lots of doomy breaks, really heavy production" or "Suffo-clone, raw production, screamed and cupped vocals, very fast drumming". Pointing out why it is an OSDM gem as opposed to being some rather average release would be a plus aswell.

I got rick-rolled so many times when buying stuff with "Incantationish riffs, lots of doomy breaks, really heavy production" or "Suffo-clone, raw production, screamed and cupped vocals, very fast drumming" in the description. It's just so very subjective, and in many cases inaccurate.
I understand your point though. When contributing here again I might add a short note below the link.

Sorry I was short on time and just posted what came to the top of my head. Edited my post to include some short notes.

Alright, here's a couple I'll be working on the next several months:

I'm not going to put a description next to these because I'm pretty sure some of you have heard these (or maybe not in the case of Necrophile and Fulmination)
Image

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKusos8netQ

Necrophile (Japan) compilation...this one is out now. Early Japanese stuff from the late 80s early 90s with members of Anatomia, Transgressor, Criminal Christ and Messiah Death

Image

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80pyOzOE ... re=related

Fulmination compilation - four sick demos, no full-length. One promo was 45 minutes. Featured members of Uncanny.

Though, they planned and recorded a Split LP with Obscure Infinity (best stuff ever from O.I.) that never materialised :( Pain in the ass to find the original Fulmination demos.

Hopefully you can do something with O.I. as well. The band is too good and would justify a 2-CD release of all their recordings.

Peter, I would love to do OI stuff and have looked into it. You're right, it deserves it.

The unreleased Fulmination split will be included on this comp.

What about Necropsy (Fin)? They have some really good material and they deserve some attention as well. They seem to be totally forgotten despite having a split with Demigod.

BTW in case anyone is interested (and who in this thread wouldn't be?), the Abhorrence (Fin) material will finally be seeing the light of day through Svart records, hopefully some time over the next few months.

What Abhorrence material are you speaking of? I expect a demo/EP compilation because I never heard anything about them getting back together.
As far as Necropsy goes, their early material was awesome. However, the new album is not really my cup of tea. I imagine many people aren't bothered to check their demos after listening to "Bloodwork".

Yeah I meant the demo compilation. Sorry I wasn't more clear. I figured that was implied.

Just wanted to say, amazing thread, thanks everybody. Old school death metal is the most consistently good genre of metal.

Newish Polish band out called Throneum, they know how to play. Deathmass of the Gravedancer is a sick album. Slugathor are pretty sick as well.

Incubus' albums Serpent Temptation and Beyond the Unknown are amazing slabs of old school Death/Thrashery. I've yet to hear anything that can match tracks like the battle of Armageddon or Certain Accuracy. Best Christian band ever.

I've always categorized that album as somewhat more death/thrash than progressive DM. It's a weird type of death/thrash, still sick though.

Grotesque - Incantation EP

Features Tompa Lindberg (At the Gates) on vocals, Alf Svensson and Kristian Wahlen (AKA Necrolord) on Guitars.

This is the most gutteral and brutal death metal, Lindberg ever performed on and has little to nothing in common with his and Svensson work in ATG. Highly recommended listen for fans of classic Swedish death metal or of old school death metal in general.

Image

Image
The break up of Grotesque spawned ATG & Liers in Wait. The latter released only one fabulous EP named "Spiritually Uncontrolled Art".

No shit idiot, this isn't about current bands that sound like they were playing from a different era, otherwise this thread would've been 200 pages long.

Necrotomy - Orectic Awakening : Lovely Australian (Not to be confused with the Hungarian band, which is also good) demo band that has great intros and splashes of death/doom. Their first Demo, Cranial Dismemberment is also worthy of checking out.

Fermentatio - Felülnézet: Very crusty Hungarian death metal. Bass is really up in the mix (and really good too).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uS3AG6LlRt0&feature=related

Frikh is an old-school Greek band that's demo is presumably self titled. A punk band, Arxi Tou Telous, is in some way related to them, so I guess it wouldn't be too off to recommend them here as well.

Ossuary - Pennsylvanian death metal band with blackened vocals. May or may not have had black members, not that it really matters.

Graal - (1998) Sigullum Naturae: Weird Ukranian avant black/death metal. Odd production, vocals, instruments, everything.

I think Bolt Thrower deserve an honorable mention, War Master was an excellent album in my opinion. Not to mention that the album artwork is awesome, and they're also from the city I live in :D

Already know and love em', one of my first grind bands. Actually discovered them before Nasum.

VERMIN - Plunge Into Oblivion (1994): Lots of variation in riffs with a vocalist that sounds like Chris Reifert on steriods. Not gonna link to any specific song. Youtube it.

Love History - The Astral Silence of Blooming Virgin Beauty: Kind of odd death/doom. I don't fancy it all that much, but it's an honorable mention.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QlyVi0wxgg&feature=related

Sermon - From Death to Death: really good Russian prog.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bm367IIOcso&feature=related

Obscenity - The 3rd Chapter: German band that mixes a few technical elements, without losing brutality at all.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YasNlUb-yu0&feature=related

Atrocity - Hallucinations: German stuff that gets really quirky, kinda like carbonized.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=207Uyu77U5Q&feature=related

Also, I know that they've been mentioned plenty of times before, Check out Monstrosity. They aren't obscure by any means, but fuck are they good.

Sorry for the lack of pics, my computer is acting up.

Just in case any of you guys is interested...

I've just put out this:

Image Image
Original cover art (left)
Reissue cover art (right)

MANGLED TORSOS - Drawings of the Dead CD [MEMENTO-VIII]
Official reissue of their debut full-length, originally released on Morbid Records in 1994, slightly remastered for an even more pleasurable listening experience and featuring their "Anatomia Reformata" EP as bonus tracks. Thick, gruesome Death Metal with a distinctively bizarre, surreal and decadent atmosphere comprised of slow-to-mid paced passages and grinding overtones sublimated by some gargling, guttural vocals, like the impossible combination of early Pungent Stench, diSEMBOWELMENT and Demilich. The 12-page booklet features a brand new cover art & layout by Patrick Wentz, the band's drummer.

Feel free to visit http://www.memento-mori.es for further info on other available or upcoming reissue CD's (Centinex, Acrostichon, Burial, Sempiternal Deathreign, Mourning...).

I thought I would make another addition to the thread, and goddamn is this a good thread. I just recently discovered this band, which hopefully haven't already been mentioned, Supuration from France who play a progressive style of old school death metal which is fucking remarkable. I've heard a bunch of their early demos and their debut album that I instantly became hooked on from my first listen.
