So, we all know that Pop, Rock and Metal are genres dominated by tenors (that is, guys with high-pitched voices), and even though I like many a wailer such as the Dickinsons and Tates of the world, being a baritone myself I particularly have a thing for the deep crooning of people like the late Peter Steele (R.I.P.), Johan Längquist, Matt Barlow, Warrel Dane (love him or hate him, he's got a mean lower register) or Dan Swäno when he does cleans. So, due to that I would say that it would be great if you guys could recommend me some bands that have baritones as lead singers. You can mention any genre, as long as we're talking about clean vocals and it's not anything Gothic. See that I say "Gothic" especifically (cause I already have Goth Rock for that matter), but Doom Metal recs are more than welcome. It won't bother me if the singers also go ocasionally for high notes such as in the cases of Längquist and Barlow, AS LONG AS THEY STAY ON THEIR LOWER REGISTER MOST OF THE TIME.

That's pretty much it, and thanks in advance for your sugestions.

Fields of the Nephilim. Rock/metal band with deep vocals, mostly clean (Karl McCoy). But remember, they're not that cheesy gothic music, these guys are definitely unique!

Go with Tiamat's Wildhoney, it's rather psychedelic, and Edlund's voice is amazing. All the other albums after that one are as good and the voice might even sound better in A Deeper Kind of Slumber, but those stray already in the goth genre.

Or, if you want some epic sounding heavy metal rooted in black (that's what they started playing), check out Root's Kärgeräs (might as well be one of the best concept albums ever) and The Book, an really dark and sinister sounding album; Blackie's riffing is comparable to Iommi's on the first Sabbath albums when measuring it's awesomeness, and Big Boss' voice is out of this world.

...aaand I'm sure there's more but I can't remember right now, I'll update if I come up with anything else later.

You mentioned Dan Swäno, are you familiar with Godsend(Nor)?

I am familiar with Godsend indeed, but I don't care a lot about them. I'm much more of a Nightingale/Edge of Sanity guy (and I also love Moontower, of course).

Cool to see another Nightingale fan (love thier music!) and for the purpose of this thread - the band Another Life is some kind of "Nightingale-clone" (Dan also played synth on the album) with very similar vocal style so you might check it out. Not as great as Nightingale but def. worth checking out.

Also I personally like Tarneli Jarva's deep vocals on Sentenced's "Amok" album and esp. on the first albums from his later band The Black League. Might be sth you could look up, too...

This looks promising. I'll try to listen to the band's back catalogue in the near future. Anything that you especially recommend?

PS: Yes, Nightingale is lovely

Well, the best albums to start is Zoon, Revelations/Forever Remain and Elizium. Zoon was originally released under the name, The Nephilim, but is now considered a FOTN work. If you like those, then get the rest. Revelations/Forever Remain is a live dvd, and one of the best live performances I have ever seen. A very classy release.

I'll write that down so I can start research tomorrow. Really appreciate it, man.

Also, Eroteric; I'm yet to listen to Sentenced's gothic albums (I have only heard North from Here up until now), but if they're anything like Nightingale, then I'll make sure to check 'em out along with Moonspell.

Crimson and White Light are probably their best two Gothic/Suicide albums

RaHoWa also has nice vocals (though people more knowledgable than myself say he can be pretty off-key)

"The Snow Fell" (Skrewdriver cover), "When America Goes Down", "Ode to a Dying People", "Might is Right" ...love those songs so much that I'm willing to mention these bigots.

oh, and this oddity in Dark Tranquillity's discography might appeal.

never got into those guys, but "Allure of the Earth" should have been a hit song with all these folk who dig S.O.A.D/StoneSour/Staind/etc.

I'm not really a Funeral Doom person (regarding Fallen) and I do know Dark Tranquillity (who doesn't?). Also; believe me when I say that I do not like Woods of Ypres. AT ALL.

I second this. The cleans on this album rule! The best DT album for you to start with, based on your requests. Projector to me, is one of the very few metal albums (that works) that has a perfect micture of Dead Can Dance and melodic death metal. AOh, and that reminds me, even if they're not metal, you might like Dead Can Dance, one of the two singers is Brendan Perry and he has a voice just like you're requesting. His solo work is really good too!

AWESOME! Then let me recommend the mandatory albums by both bands. For Dead Can Dance, the best ones are Within the Realms of a Dying Sun, The Serpent's Egg, and Aion. If you really like those, then check out the rest of their material. They never released a BAD album, you know? And by Brendan Perry, I would recommend his second album which came out last year, Ark. the first album wasn't as good.

But "beware" - after the first two albums and one EP, their sound changed quite a lot from the heavy, doomy stuff to some more rock'n roll/country metal style. Not abd at all but in no way as awesome as said early albums (Ichor, Utopia A.D. and the Doomsday Sun EP).

Paradise Lost will do it for you. From their third album till their fifth their singer Nick Holmes used a deep clean vocal style mixed with a harsh rasp. Some of the later bands era features low/mid vocals.

If OP is asking for doom metal maybe one of the following bands work.

Jack Frost, the Austrian band.
Stillborn, the Swedish band.

I'm already into Paradise Lost, Colin. They're not my favorites, but I find some of their records to be a great listen.

And Doomsday; appreciate the Doom recs, especially Jack Frost. Cool, laid back stuff.

Tristitia might be up your alley. The vocals are a mix of deep clean, and blackened rasps. It's been a long time since I've listened to them, so I can't remember if they use one more than the other.

don't know if the music of Ulver suits you but Garm/Trickster G has an amazing, deep, mellow and warm way of singing. However if Ulver's music doesn't suit you, you might like his other more song-focussed project Head Control System.

I've heard him in Arcturus. Awesome, awesome singer. Might have to listen to this Head Control System thing of his then, considering Black Metal's not really my thing...

Well, I got a rec for you. It's power metal, but the singer has quite a deep voice. It's not the usual style that is often associated with the sub-genre either. It has a darker vibe to it.

Disregard the video footage in the video... The music is what matters. If you do happen to like it I highly recommend their album entitled "Crimson Frost"

November's Doom (vocals typically have an Opeth duality of rough/clean, but the clean is low-register and rather pleasant at times)
