Are re-recordings really not the same as re-releases? Gorgoroth re-recorded their album Under the Sign of Hell, and after I reported it, Azmodes said that re-recordings are not the same as re-releases.

Re-recordings are valid albums, yes.

Re-releases feature the same album material, often -but not always- released again by another label than the original (or released by a label after the band self-released it the first time) and/or on another medium. They can come with bonus tracks, new cover art, bonus-DVD or some other additional material, but the album itself is identical to the original (well, there are remasters and such, but I'm not really knowledgeable enough with this to tell what else is possible). The gist is that it's the same music in theory and performance.

Re-recordings are more or less based on the same material like the original, but -as the name tells you- newly recorded from scratch. You could say it's the band covering themselves, be it with the same or a different lineup. The degree to which re-recordings differ from the source material can vary, sometimes the song structures are re-arranged, new instruments added, sometimes it's just exactly the same. As opposed to re-releases they are (mostly) the same music in theory only.

And yes, while the former goes into the additional info for the ur-entry, the latter can be added as an album of its own.

If someone wants to add the correct tracklist (or make a new entry and I'll delete the old one):

It does happen. I see it all the time, and have accidently added an album twice a couple times myself. But what showed up from yours i have never seen. Not a big deal.

Quick question: I noticed this today. Is this a valid, "official" Metallica album?

http://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Me ... tal/328635

I hope I'm asking this in the right place, if not then I apologize; there used to be a thread that dealt with less-than-legitimate releases but I couldnt find it. I don't think this is an "official" Metallica release, and like most such releases (e.g. "Bay Area Thrashers" and "Live USA") probably shoudnt be listed in the official discog. But if it is legit then, I apologize for wasting people's time.

I have no idea if this is the place to ask, but I guess if nothing else someone can direct me to the appropriate topic.

I have stumbled over a few cases where bands have information regarding albums with unknown release years entered in their "additional notes" as well as the exact same album entered in the proper fashion. Normally I'd just remove the additional information as redundant, but in some cases I STRONGLY suspect that whoever has added the release has merely parroted the "additional info" and made a guess in regards to the actual year of release.
In particular a major red flag goes up for me when bands with no other releases, no active links, no bio and no entered year of creation suddenly has an album entered with the only new piece of information being a year of release stating "2004".

Here are two examples that I still have handy;
http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Cra ... 3540297906
http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Vul ... 4rn/127161

So... I guess my question is... is there any way to confirm the validity in these cases? And if not, what should I do as a user? Report it? Bring it up on the forum? Delete the additional info? Ignore it?

That Indonesian band has a myspace. You can get in touch with them. If you cannot contact the band, just get in touch with the user who added the album.

Fair enough. I was just curious towards "the procedure" in cases like that.
Personally I am probably going to leave it alone. I am a bit uncomfortable about bringing it up in the first place; I don't really want to go around second-guessing everybody.

Here is your new list of splits:

If you sort it by date - starting from the oldest - you've stopped at page 71, on the "Simbiose / Agathocles" split.

I will take a look at it later ...
Thanks...
I added the re-releases and such, but I think it might be best to do a new search; again: later.

Could you edit your first post and add that link and page to it? The Agathocles / Simbiose is on page 36.

Err, you can also remove:

Quote:
Moreover, the links posted below (split albums) are those of the old software system and may need to be transfered to the new version as well. Maybe Morrigan or Hellblazer can clear matters up on how long the old links are still accessible.

All splits checked up to split #301100
>>> http://www.metal-archives.com/splits-list.php?page=135 <<<

The new list is a response to that.

How about CD + DVD combos? Should them be added as a double-disc single entry, in case the CD and the DVD have different tracklists, and just add one disc if they have the same tracklist??

That seems like a good way to deal with such releases.
