Sarcodes sanguinea, a plant, its parasitic on mycorhizal mushroom mycelium.

Up until about three weeks ago I was a Photography Student and pretty much hated it, the way it was taught took all the fun out of it. The only upside was that I could use the Darkroom whenever I wanted. But this topic has made me want to restart my hobby. As soon as I can get my scanner working i'll put some of my Pinhole camera images up, well the "negatives" of them at any rate. Although they are no where near as good as some of the images in here.

Ok:

It`s a polished cross section of Labradorite. It was first discovered in Labrador, Canada.
Eskimo`s say they are the remnants of stone which hold the aurora borealis
lights before one of their ancestors smashed the rock with his spear, releasing them into the sky.
Looking at the stone one way it`s almost dull, until it catches the light.

Forestcorpse: the top two of your last post, did you go to my summer cottage for the photos? I know two places there that look exactly like the ones you photographed.

OscarRio, that would make an awesome album cover. How did you take that picture? Or does it look weird because of editing? It slightly recalls a photo taken with one of those self made cameras that are essentially a box with a tiny hole and blank film at the back of the box. Although you could'nt have take that with a camera like that unless you were extremely patient since I think it takes days to get a picture with one of those.

Finnish and Norwegian nature is and can be very similar then!

I was surprised to find it's so during my visit. Admittedly I didn't go to a whole lot of places in Norway, but it seemed to be particularly true in eastern Norway near the Swedish border. Is that where you live? Our summer cottage is in eastern Finland, where all the lakes are, near this beauty.

Ah I see! I am located on the opposite side of Norway, out by the coast.

More photos of Oregon's back country paradise. Some cool stuff out here, and some downright wierdness. Here's a little of both.


The "Fingers of Fate"


Eastern Oregon's "Rivendell."


This might not look that interesting but the wierd thing is...those black things on the ground that look like rocks: Those aren't rocks, people. They are wierd chunks of black glass! The strange black glass is everywhere out here, just littering the ground. Nobody's really sure where it came from; it's not man-made, evidently! This was just north of Burns, Oregon.


I know; pictures of screaming death skull cave formations are kind of cliche but...I'm gonna post this one anyway. This is in the same valley as the "Rivendell" picture above, ironically- its located at the far eastern edge of Malheur County, Oregon.


and finally...we call this place Minas Morgul, for obvious reasons. (in keeping with the Tolkein theme) If you drive the interstate east from Portland towards Boise you pass this ruined cement plant, located high in the mountains about a half hour southeast from Baker City.

(Dang I keep forgetting how to post pics! Hope it works this time; I feel like a total mallcore kid!)

I was reminded of glass being found in the Libyan desert and geoligists speculating it was sand which had turned into glass due to a meteor impact?

yeah, it's Obsidian. Burns is about a two or three hour drive east of Bend, and Glass Butte is about halfway between the two towns. There's really not much else between those towns actually. Human settlements are few and far between in that part of the country. The picture I took was just a couple miles north of Burns, though. There's an Indian Reservation nearby, probably no coincidence; the native Americans used to carve spearheads and knives from this stuff apparently.

Just got back from Cliff Island Maine where I've been going every summer for the past 12 years. Here are some pictures:

Erickg13, is that Sunset photo taken in Richmond, California by chance? If so, I was just out that way- I even snapped some photos from the opposite side of the bay in fact. (maybe I'll post them later.)

Really digging Necroghast's photos by the way- including the sunsets. I have never been able to figure out how to take good sunset photos with my camera.
