I really got into black metal, and I'm always trying to discover and detect some atmospheric quality black metal. Now, I need recommendations for worthwile black metal besides the mainstream. I'm familiar with the pioneers of the genre. Bands such as Mayhem, Burzum, Gorgoroth, Darkthrone, Satyricon, Dark Funeral, and all that. Now, I'd like to get to know the more underground kind of the scene. For example, I got my hands on Isengard, Nargaroth, Beherit, Behexen, Satanic Warmaster, Horna, and some material in the vein of Xasthur, Watain, or Wolves In The Throne Room. I'm pretty much looking for that kind of stuff. I have no certain expectations, and there's no certain criteria, but I'd be happy if you'd just post some of you favorite black metal bands for me to check them out. So, I'm actually looking for insider tips and bands that are actually pure gold, though they don't really appear in the more mainstream black metal scene. So, I think you got the idea. Thanks in advance, everybody.

Varathron, Necromantia, Mortuary Drape, Dawn (swe), Ancient Wisdom, Dodheimsgard's Kronet Til Konge up to Satanic Art, Vreid, Taake, Nokturnal Mortum, Sirius, Enochian Crescent.

A few of my favorites from recent years:

Mgla from Poland. Nothing really groundbreaking, but very well composed and played Black Metal:

Angantyr from Denmark:

Grimm from The Netherlands, specifically their "Heksenkringen" album, which mixes in clean vocals and Traditional Metal moments:

Here is some stuff i discovered during the time ...

Morkekunst (sounds very "old school" but i like it alot more than the ordinary Darkthrone ripoff´s)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSYEhV0qvos

Öde (It is subjectiv what´s gold and what´s not - but this is gold for me. It sounds alot better if you have the real CD)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akxzbjXD ... re=related

Mortuus

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vi9lWSC55RI

Raate

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbUn5xiL1DM

Kilte

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmP2Rbg23JU

Armagedda (The "Ond Spriritism" album is their best)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PK7LCbEt ... re=related

Leviathan (from sweden, faster music but with atmosphere and some "groovy"(?) parts)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cq9jW9x8 ... re=related

Samael (Their older stuff - i haven´t seen this mentioned during the last time, so i guess it´s not too mainstream)

Kvist - For Kunsten Maa Vi Evig Vike
When it comes to raw, atmospheric, melodic black metal, this is one of my favorites. Kvist's only release to date is a classic of Norwegian black metal that's as good as any of the more well-known releases from the early-mid 90's. The riffs are very well composed; like the classical/melancholic sound of early Gorgoroth with the majestic, nocturnal essence of early Emperor and Satyricon.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mndcpIhjqJo

Nehëmah - Light of a Dead Star / Requiem Tenebrae
This excellent French band plays a very tasteful second-wave Norwegian style that's dark, grim and straightforward. This may not be very original, but this is the kind of band that once you get into, it just doesn't matter because of how highly competent and well-executed their music is.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiwzwfDkwiw

Frozen Shadows - Dans les Bras des Immortels
There's a lot of bands that closely emulate that early-mid 90's Norwegian style, but this is one of the best I've heard and a huge personal favorite. This album is 100% perfect from beginning to end. The atmosphere, songwriting, riffs, melodies, vocals, speed, every aspect of this band is absolutely top-notch and cannot be missed.

OP, check out Asgaroth - Trapped In The Depths Of Eve

They're labelled here as black/doom metal but they sound more symphonic than doom to me. One of my favourite bands that I've found through this board.

I really love Necromantia and Thou Art Lord, especially Necromantia. They've always been different and their songs seem to reflect a more mature black metal sound. Thou Art Lord is more like early Rotting Christ.

Deathspell Omega and Nehemah sound great, going to be listening to both bands for a while.

Dead Shell of Universe, from Serbia. Inspired by DsO, some of the best, most memorable riffs I've heard in a long time. This song is very long, so only a portion is displayed here, still, gives you an idea (the riff that plays at 1:48 is the best thing since Burzum's Jesus Tod!)-
http://www.youtube.com/user/ArkhonParasite?blend=3&ob=5#p/u/0/GKYbK1NRoSo

Myrkr, from Ireland. Very inspired by the Swedish Orthodox BM scene.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNXEWOVoce4&feature=related

Cursed 13, probably the best new band to emerge from Sweden. Extremely fucking heavy sound, sort of similar to Craft.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUjn4m3FiwM

Svartrit, again from Sweden, similar to the mighty Armagedda.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PszMAdJ2b9g

Simple Existenz, new band of former Nagelfar member Zorn, so you know it's going to be good. At 1:22 it totally turns Alcest-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OT-ZgyVF2Mo

Midnight Odyssey, amazing band from Australia. Similar to Darkspace, and bound to become as popular.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEaREjLqxjg

Let me know what you think!

Forgjord - On the same label as Behexen (Hammer of Hate) so pretty awesome
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrDYf-xFbZo

Trelldom - Gaahl on vocals
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfgmLr8CtLA

Vesania - You probably already know them but they're worth mentioning. Fronted by Orion from Behemoth.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sn4uqoHB75o

1349 - You probably know these guys too, but here you go just in case

You need some Blackhorned. Danish black metal that I haven't seen mentioned on here, but they have a few albums out. They are quite dark sounding but not overly raw and the melodies are quite eerie, almost melodic. I also love their cover art.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MckhZRJt ... re=related

Asmodeus is one of the best fast and chaotic black metal bands if you like that style. Much better than Enthroned and 1349 in my opinion.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSYjUAvI ... re=related

Svartsyn have always been one of my favorites. This is from their new album.

Before asking, yeah I'm going A-Z and picking out my most listened to black metal bands hahaha.

Absu- Thrashy as hell black metal. Seriously, it's probably the best black metal United States has ever produced. I would start with their first album because it's honestly the most accessible and sounds the most basic, but if you want something that has more of a individual sound to itself check out Tara. This is from Tara

Animus- This is somewhere between being a basement black metal project and a straight cut Burzum-esque black metal project, meaning that while it has that basement-like quality to it there's still plenty quality to be found. Poems for the Aching and Souls For The Infuriated is by far one of the saddest most depressing albums I've heard in a really long time, so I'd definitely check it out. This is from Poems for the Aching Souls For The Infuriated.

Basilisk- This is from the United Kingdom. It has a really unique tone to the guitars and unique sound tot he vocals. Honestly, it's hard to explain without using the words "raw and grim", which is pretty fucking nebulous when discussing black metal hahaha. This is from A Joyless March Through the Cold-Lands

Cobalt- Black metal from my hometown of Colorado! Seriously great shit, sort of along the lines of Marduk or norsecore, but it's hard to pigeonhole it into a certain style because these guys really do have their own sound going for themselves. This is from Eater of Birds

Deathspell Omega- They've already been recommended, but I'm stating them again just to emphasize how amazing they are. Honestly, I've had a bit of an off period from "metal", but I'll still listen to this band quite a bit. It's the darkest music I've ever heard produced, and that's true even in the realm of black metal. I'd first get "Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice". This songs from Si Monumentum Requires.

Drudkh- Although I'm not a fan at all of their newest release, all their stuff before was absolutely fantastic. All their music is based on eastern Europe, and they do a fantastic job bringing out the atmosphere of such a place. I would start with Blood in our Wells or Autumn Aurora as a first album. Song from Blood in Our Wells.

Limbonic Art- Simply put, Limbonic Art is Dimmu Borgir if they were an actual black metal band. It's highly symphonic based music with standard black metal backing it. I'd start with the album In Abhorrence Dementia as it's the most accessible, but then I'd get Moon In The Scorpio. This is from In Abhorrence Dementia

The One- A raw black metal band from Greece. Definitely follows the sound of bands like Darkthrone or even Dark Funeral. Check out their album I, Master. This is from the album I, Master.

Ragnarok- If your in the mood for norsecore definitely check out this band. Heavy as hell, straight forward, and never stops. This is from their album Diabolical Age.

Samayoi- Samayoi has gone completely unrecognized from the black metal scene, and it's a shame. This was music that made the whole depressive black metal scene in the United State look like absolute shit. Seriously- check out the album Kanashimi. It's great music. This is from the album Kanashimi

Taake- This band is the perfect blend of the norsecore sound that bands like Marduk have developed and the more romantic side of black metal such as Burzum or Drudkh. It's really pretty music that it's surprisingly aggressive a lot of the time. Check out Nattestid Ser Porten Vid first, as it's probably the best album they did. This songs from Nattestid Ser Porten Vid.

Ulver- Although I would regard them as far more mainstream then not, the fact you didn't mention them means I have to recommend them. They're FAR from their black metal sound anymore, but what they did with the album "Bergtatt - et Eeventyr I 5 Capitler" is fucking amazing. It's one of my favorite black metal albums ever and nothing else has ever been created like it. This is from "Bergtatt- et Eeventyr I 5 Capitler".

Nokturnal Mortum is unbelievably great. Was already recommended but check out especially Lunar Poetry and Goat Horns. Weltanschauung and Voice of Steel are incredible too but not as black metal as their first stuff.

There's the French "black legions" bands like Mutiilation, Vlad Tepes, Belketre, Torgeist, etc.

There's bestial black/death bands like Blasphemy, Bestial Warlust, Blasphemophagher, Bestial Raids, Necrovomit, Embrace Of Thorns, Proclamation, Von, Bestial Summoning & Anal Blasphemy.

There's also chaotic black/death/thrash like Sadistik Exekution & Martire.

There's black/thrash like Aura Noir, Sarcofago, Necrodeath, Nifelheim, Bestial Mockery, Sathanas, Anal Vomit, Vulcano, Holocausto, Sextrash, Tormentor(Hun), Nocturnal(Ger), Bestial Holocaust, Destroyer 666, Gospel Of The Horns, Slaughter Lord & Poison(Ger).

There's black/doom bands like Goatlord & Necro Schizma.

There's also killer black metal bands like Master's Hammer & Root from the Czech Republic.

Lja play raw but melodic black metal that heavily employs tremolo melodies:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Evg1pvWBcK8

Blood stained dusk is a somewhat emperor influenced band with pest from gorgoroth on vocals:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0jTqPal ... re=related

If you like Isengard Sorgsvart is a good bet, imagine Isengard with a little more folk and more strangeness; though on some tracks they stay pretty close to orthodox black metal:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5sBlUyA7vq0

S.V.E.S.T. Plays dirty, claustrophobic black metal revolving around a small but hypnotic riff base:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mc4ugWL_-YE

Odal from germany plays folkish pagan raw black metal using haunting melodies and vocals:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVGsMb4zru4

Horn is an interestnig band that gives an open, vast atmosphere with heavy use of distortionm delay and viking-esque riffs:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiSlvqRSY1M

Bekhira is a band that has gotten a lot of praise but I don't see whats that great about them, but others seem to like them:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwCmVGTKkPI

Finally lake of blood have an atmospheric take on fuzzy, raw and drawn out black metal:

A lot of good ones have been mentioned, but I'll add a few more that have not been noted.

Brenoritvrezorkre- Extremely raw, low-fi and alien. The sound of descending into madness.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7054Xk9c5ds&feature=related

Grand Belail's Key- US black metal with groovy melodies and punk edge.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCbiZWxVocU&feature=related

In the Woods- Pagan black metal with folk and prog influences. Extremely dynamic and moody.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IREHKv2tQ9I&feature=related

Ludicra- Melodic black metal band with an amazing female vocalist.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MZcyfgz_Lk

Mutiilation- Raw, violent, nihilistic black metal with amazing melodies.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrMGZpP4C04

Velvet Cacoon- Lush, atmospheric black metal that sounds like it was recording under the ocean.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVCtXINRuNU

Weakling- Epic, progressive black metal

I thought that album was never released.

It was released, just hyper limited. The band is working on trying to get a wider re-release. I tried to think of the most obscure (and good) but still attainable thing out there since he specifically asked for something outside the mainstream realm of BM. ;)

This is pure art. Some of the most obscure and sinister music I ever heard.

Altar of Plagues. Slow build up, but the atmosphere is immense over the course of the album. Probably my favorite band on this list.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qxB3tZscZM

The Axis of Perdition. Silent Hill goes black metal, or something like it. This is supremely fucked up stuff right here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxEkpOq8JZU

Bishop of Hexen. More symphonic and in the vein of Emperor, but damn good as far as trying to re-capture that glory of Anthems... goes. Clean vocals are even reminiscent of Ihsahn.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3GzWUsjOHE

Fen. It's basically "Tonight's Decision" era Katatonia (Epoch album) if they decided to play black metal instead.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AHtaeNC0lM

Gallowbraid. Folkier and in the vein of Agalloch. Rockier and less atmospherically inclined than Agalloch. Great riffs here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gte6yF5irIA

Sear Bliss. Atmospheric black metal with brass sections. Their past three albums have been great, particularly this one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnhYsG5bl-E

Stormlord. Power metal meets black metal. The clean vocalist that comes in on some tracks of this album is killer. Peter Steele-esque, almost.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6GDZyDAkfw

Thurisaz. Fantastic melodies here, if more melodic black metal is your thing. Some death metal influence here too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eK0pSiZH1c

Finally, we have Winterhorde. Melodic, proggy, symphonic. Huge sound with a great concept to back it up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsYa8_r_zZs

And that's everything in my collection that hasn't already been recommended here. Hope you find something you like! : )

This guy made WONDERFUL recommendations, but the mention of Sear Bliss reminds me to recommend Forest Silence's third demo.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsbwKLVrqo8

An absolutely unique band meant to be recommended is Verdunkeln. I know no band that sounds alike.
Not even their two albums sound alike - they are both great, however.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpTxJBbLISg First album
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBG6f1Mj ... re=related Second album

With Horn mentioned above, I must recommend Licht Erlischt - I discovered them not too long ago, but they certainly are worth checking.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgMNUY07u34

Though I guess it is fairly mainstream and you don't want them to be, you haven't mentioned it yet.
Alcest's Souvenir etcetc. is a rather... bleh. I won't even finish that sentence, it's way overrated.
However, the 2010 album Écailles de Lune is worth checking out.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TlajUeu ... re=related

Also I don't think they're that mainstream, so I'd have to mention the pagan black metal Wyrd, especially the album of Heathen.
The song is quite long so I can't post a link to that. Teehee. You would just have to believe the reviews.
http://www.metal-archives.com/reviews/W ... then/8780/

Hmm... what else is there... of course!
The canadian black metal scene - especially Gris and Miserere Luminis, but also Sombre Forets. And I guess Sui Caedere.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwLw1twqz1w Gris
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmu-QAxK ... re=related Miserere Luminis
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZM-PiYEEoU Sombre Forets
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21brhV4gvLE Sui Caedere

Once you've had enough of the darkness, there's always the somewhat uplight and synthy-folky Vordven
(note: don't think of it any less, it's an amazing band. one of a kind. The 1999 album is the best.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkAPb_XlYOE

Liked Burzum? Then you'll like Veil - Dolor!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khmWPf7Da-4

And the moment I've been waiting for:
Potentiam, Years in the Shadows album. This is one of the most unknown yet one of the greatest albums of Black Metal I have ever found.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIE56IaSlWo

..I should also probably add Zuriaake from the chinese black metal scene....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YaI66jw ... re=related First Album
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kg1n_rgj ... re=related Second Album

Kroda as a black/folk band is quite an epic addition indeed. They even made a cover of Burzum's Jesus Tod!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZvAlK2Xyao

Now, for something truly Finnish! Häive and Kyprian's Circle.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTSdO7bA ... re=related Häive
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFKSrmtHtxM Kyprian's Circle

Looking for some instrumentals?
Forest of Fog's Rabenflug album is then indeed in your alley! So is Vorgrow's "Black Metal is Elitism".
And Bardo's album I, and Blutklinge - Reflection of a Bleak Mind.

Well if you want something else, there's always Ambient Black Metal. Space, winter, or just cold? Sure!
Paysage d'Hiver (especially Schnee from the Split, and Winterkälte album), Darkspace, Sun of the Blind, and also Ethere.
I also shouldn't forget to add Coldworld though that's not as noisy as the ones just above. :P

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
End of my primary recommendations
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I guess I should also mention Black Lotus so it won't be left out...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXMrOhTW-TE

People used to mention Altoriu Seseliai a lot. I never understood the deal, but..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7x-mVCwo4g

I didn't end up liking them, but many people praise A Forest of Stars for its emotional vocals and uniqueness.
Well, I can't argue with that. The first song God is pretty neat, I must admit.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6V7OmV4nFI God part 1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6e5J7gq ... re=related God part 2

Well I guess that's quite the list you got there. Hope you'll find the time to check them out! :P
Also there have been some great recs already, like Mgla and various others - have fun! :)

Sir, you have lost, for I have ruined that for you.
This thread is now worth to have been created.
