Hey, a mate of mine liked some of the folk metal I showed him (minus the metal, surprisingly), so I'm wondering if there are any folk-metal bands out there (preferably with Norse/Norwegian/Swedish folk influences) with a minimal of metal and a maximum of folk.
Odd request, but cheers!

There is pretty much an entire genre of music like this, the Swedish 'vikingarock'. Most of it is punk and RAC influenced, but some bands put heavy metal leads and other elements in there too, resulting in pretty much what you are asking for.

For example:

Enhärjarna "Odin"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpPnes2XXVs

Hel "Förfall"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Je_gDyjmLNc

Nidhöggs Vrede "Kvaseras blod"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgVTXLCcYCc

EDIT: Note that there are other entirely different bands with the same or similar names as these...

Hey guys! I'm looking for some great folk/viking/pagan/celtic/idontknow metal, within these criteria, as I've heard a lot of folk metal albums which are said to be so cool, but for my taste they didn't do anything.

I like:
-catchy melodies
-nice choruses, especially where the whole band sings simultaneously (sorry, actually I have no idea how these elements are called)
-clean vocals (even female vocals are okay), maybe some death metal-like vocals are tolerable
-accordion
-Slavic languages, but that's not a must, of course (in fact, I don't really care about the lyrics that much, since, most likely, I won't understand them, except they're in Hungarian)
-some real folk songs and/or "metalized" (does this word even exist?) folk songs on an album are also a good idea

I'm not at all looking for:
-overlong songs
-progressive metal
-black metal (well, the thing I like the least in folk metal)
-melodic death metal (OK, this one's the worst)

Here are my album ratings on RYM, if you'd like to see some more accurate imaginations about what I'd like to hear.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks a lot for the recommandations guys. I liked all of them except Moonsorrow but I already knew of them anyway hehe. And I saw a thread that was very similar to my request so if anyone is seeking the same kind of stuff when the thread will be forgotten here you go: http://www.metal-archives.com/board/vie ... hp?t=63500

I'm new to the band Ancient Rites. Which album of them should I hear first and what do they sound like? I should note that I'm more interested in black metal than folk metal. Considering their genres, do they sound similiar to Bathory or something?

Troll Gnet El - Their old albums are just really bouncy beer-folk (lots of flute, semi-clean male vocals). New album (1516 - Presvetlogo Hop Order) is their best by far, pretty catchy stuff, metal is limited (which is why they got deleted from the archives I am guessing), vocals range from clean to semi-clean (both genders, mainly male), fiddle and flute used. Keep in mind I am terrible at describing and the album is actually way better than this description. There are some songs on yt of them (the most popular is pornopolka, but it is not nearly their best, it is actually probably the worst on the album)

Hmmm..Kalevala from russia has the accordians and the female singing. Echo of Dalriada/Dalriada has Female vocals, it is damn catchy and their chorus's are very very good.

@Pagan_Death_Sceam
Yep, I know and like both bands.
@kale100
I've heard already about them, but haven't checked them out.

Thanks for both of you!

They were pretty good, but with a little practice, I think they could be even better! Any more recs would be appreciated!

PIAREVARACIEN is a pretty unknown but also pretty fantastic band from Belarus. While possibly being labelled as Pagan/Folk (blackish) metal they just sound other than the usual bands of the genre:

Does anyone know of a distinguished and accessible band from Brazil? I think it would be interesting to see what the brazilians can come up with.

Tuatha de Danann
http://metal-archives.com/band.php?id=993

They are some really different folk metal, but they are really good in my opinion. Very...upbeat I suppose. Trova di Danú is a brilliant album! :)

Delenda Arcana - Last Breath of a Dying Enemy
http://metal-archives.com/release.php?id=198043

Described in the review as a Brazillian XIV Dark Centuries, I would have to agree. Some solid stuff!

I don't know if they're still around, but there was a Brazilian band called Canis Lupus that released a good album several years back. They're called black metal here but the album is more Viking metal.

I've done a bit of research lately but just can't find *quite* what I'm looking for.

A bit back a friend introduced me to Mago de Oz. I got pretty hooked... feeling like the songs varied from real catchy, upbeat folk with tons of hooks, or more metal songs with powerful riffs. Regardless of where individual songs placed in the genre, I really dig the clean vocals (dude's got a pretty awesome voice too), songwriting, and the level of emotion.

I was really looking for something very similair to Mago, but I'm at a bit of a loss. Many of the folk metal bands I've seen recommended around seem to be a bit on the death side (Ensiferum, (still awesome though)) or just don't quite have enough balls (Elvenking). It also seem there are many bands that just seem they threw in a violin or something... and it doesn't really fit or sound that folky... it's just rock with a violin.

But ya, something similair to Mago would be awesome. I don't speak a word of Spanish btw, so I'm not really looking for anything "culturally specific." Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Try Saurom Lamderth and Lándevir. I think these bands might be what you're looking for. :)

hmm, I assume you're familiar with Manegarm? Ok, they are far from new but if you somehow missed them till now it would be fatal not to mention them ;-)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSDUJDk-Aqs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icj3NKngKus

Here are some other not-so-well-known (yet not totally new) bands you could try:

SIG:AR:TYR (brillant Bathory influenced stuff)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HE0k7Z3aLuA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjrMFfENXSU

MUNRUTHEL (ukranian Pagan Bombast Metal stuff w/ harsher vocals, great!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BF3ZMFHIIGY
(take care his first two albums are purely pagan ambient, this song is from his third album)

SORGSVART (highly Isengard/Stor influenced)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqPG_l4JUFA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-zudG7n ... re=related

SVARGA (slavonic folk metal with a melancholic tinge - wonderful)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtIYFGKgiAs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvmHxfZbxWg

Ok, most of these are 1-3 years old but are more or less unkknown in terms of the "standard" viking/folk/pagan bands...

They are not underground, but are new(2007). Alestorm is called "Pirate Metal", but its folk metal. They are relativately new, but, not underground. Anyway, they have some great songs.

Bump so that those who just tried to start a new folk rec thread see this one.

I'll follow with a request. I discovered Crom's "Vengeance" not long ago, and I crave more folky/viking powerish metal with clean vocals. I have and know bands like Falconer, Trelleborg, etc., and have heard of a lot more. Anything a little more obscure but good that I haven't caught onto yet?

Cant think of many to be honest, maybe Argentina's Skiltron, interesting stuff with a good use of bagpipes! Great melodies and the singer is very good, worth a try. A more obvious band im sure you would be aware of are Tyr.

I've heard of Skiltron, and will look into them, love bagpipes!

Yes, I'm well acquainted with Tyr as well, though they're much more proggy than power metal-ish.

Anything else? :P

Gunther of Ancient Rites had a side project called Iron Clad that was pretty good:

I don't care for them myself, but you might check out Rebellion:

^Wow thanks a lot, mate. That'll do just nicely.

While I'm at it I forgot to respond to a few other responses :P

@Crepuscular: Thanks! Tuatha de Dannan is a good band thanks for that. And I'll certainly check out Delenda Arcana. Always a 'might as well' decision whenever Kris Verwimp does the artwork. hahah

@samekh: I'll also check out Canis Lupis, so thanks mate.

I know, but I'm going to stick by 'hardly'. It is mainly pm.

Also the new Highland Glory album sucks balls. It just sucks, not advisable to check out.

I'm wondering if anyone can clue me in on some quality [preferably early] 90's bands. I don't know a whole lot about the scene from that time, if you could even call it a scene. I don't care what genre really, as long as it is good haha. Just trying to fill in some of the gaps and whatnot, yea

I already listen to Eluvietie, I like their use of actual instruments as apposed to keyboards, the use of a female singer, and their more Melodic Death metal sound as apposed to Black or Speed metal

I do not like Korpiklaani, as they sound too happy and I don't like Ensiferum because they just sound plain light-hearted

What I would change about Eluvietie is lyrics more concerned with nature and aren't anti-Christian, long bridges that have a more subtle feel, and more melodic guitars (ideally like the ones found on In Flames' Jester Race)

^Abinchova is a band I actually just stumbled across after a search. They are pretty good to be honest. (I didn't feel like double posting your thread, so why not bump up my rec help at the same time right?hahaha)

Thanks Slag, the use of an accordion is very interesting. They're good band and they're unsigned? I feel so cool listening to indie Folk metal

I'm looking for some good Folk/Viking metal bands that do not use death growl. I want clean, Dickinson/Dio/Halford styled vocals.

Anyone?

hahah yea, well you'll find a lot of the newer underground bands take some time to get signed now that the scene's big boom is slowing. But glad ya liked them and I would personally love to see more melo-death folk influenced band. I think it could create a cool mixture.

Try Saurom. A pretty cool spanish heavy/folk metal act. Irae Dei It isn't their folkiest song, but it shows a lot of different styles that they blend together.

Also in case you don't already know about Skiltron, I'd def advise checking them out because their vocalist sounds like a Dio one off.

I'm looking for some viking/black metal with folk elements along the lines of Manegarm. What do you recommend?

Thanks in advance.
