In my case, my favorite argentinian non-metal band is Sumo (post punk /reggae).

Sumo - Breaking Away

Sumo - El Ojo Blindado

Guns N Roses, no question. One of the few non metal bands that I listen to. It's just classic hard rock, and actually very close to metal.

Ummmmm..... hmm..... there aren't too many bands or artists from Australia that I like, period. I really don't know, I suppose AC/DC since they are the only non-metal Australian artist I somewhat like, but even then, I only listen to them if it comes on the radio or on T.V.

What kind of Aussie doesn't like Midnight Oil? I'm starting to doubt that you're even an Aussie, mate - do you eat burgers with egg and beetroot on them or do you not?

Actually, I'm English who happens to live in Australia. So no, I'm not a "true Aussie" not that I would ever want to be either. The whole image of people in singlet, shorts and thongs, with a beer in one hand and a hamburger in the other, and using a ridiculous exaggerated accent and slang language is really not my thing at all.

Sonic Youth. Been listening to them a lot lately. Probably Kyuss would be high on that list as well.

Can't it be a composer? He sort of had a "band"... so I guess it counts.
Astor Piazzolla, that guy was made of win.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-NJ4ukWiiw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtMk5vAplbc

If not, then definitely Euroshima, a darkwave/goth band from the 80's in the style of early The Cure

Clutch, easily. Yeah. I'd consider myself borderline raging fanboy about Clutch.

Another worth mentioning is Monster Magnet. They've actually from the town I was born/grew up in.

Seven Collar T-Shirt - Malaysian equivalent of Radiohead with a lot of ambient influences. Some of their songs are pretty dark sounding and I could actually imagine a black metal track exploding at any moment. Some of their tracks are pretty soothing too.

http://youtu.be/BbVKgpp8odc - Here's one of their more Radiohead influenced track

Qings and Kueens - Some hard rock band and at times sounds like they're from the Guns & Roses era. Rocking guitar riffs, cool hard rocking vocals, excellent for singing a long with friends on a road trip.

http://youtu.be/JMZq7YJw1Vc - The 1st track that introduced me to them

Disagree - A Pearl Jam influenced band but more to PJ's later era. They have saxophones in some of their songs. I love how it's melodic, grungy and still has it's integrity despite the pop-rock like structure. Definitely one of the best rock acts I enjoyed from the modern Malaysian rock scene.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldU8CLJcxd4 - A soothing rock/grunge song and wait for the sax solo towards the end. :D

There's this hip hop group I really enjoy called The Rebel Scum but couldn't find their good videos over youtube. The ones in youtube are pretty typical.

We got more than our share of great metal here in canada but we also have some greats in the non metal side of things too.
The Tea Party-They dropped the ball on their last album but they put out several really incredible albums with Transmission being among the most exciting canadian albums ever.
I remember watching this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFzQX2i6mwo on muchmusic when i was a little kid and thinking it was pretty awesome.
Front Line Assembly/Delirium/Skinny Puppy/The Tear Garden etc.... Industrial wise we have some of the most legendary acts and these 4 are just the most famous, tons of great industrial stuff to be found.
Post Rock Stuff-We got Godspeed, Silver Mt Zion, Do Make Say Think and others that are the best and most original stuff the genre of post rock has to offer.
Classic Rock-We got BTO, we got the Guess Who, April Wine, Rush, the list goes on... Just pretend Kim Mitchell doesnt exist and you'll have lots of classics to check out.
Newer Indie Stuff-Some very promising indie bands from here like Metric, Land of Talk, Islands, Wintersleep, Death From Above 1979
I could go on forever and this doesnt even cover how much fucking awesome metal we got. Canada owns your country's music wise! Not even a competition, as long as you dont mention the barenaked ladies.

For the last few years The Drive-By Truckers have been, for my money, one of the best rock bands in the U.S. They combine Southern rock, soul, and a touch of country. They also write some great lyrics:

"The Righteous Path" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CyNabyA4lA

"Decoration Day" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDODEj1gkS4

"Let There Be Rock" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LptOc6OK ... re=related

Second that. I love a lot of non-metal bands from the States, but GnR takes it. Debut album is perfection

has to be a band from belfast here in ireland called And So i watch you from afar, their new single was released about a month ago its beter than mostly anything these days, metal or not, really high energy post rock type stuff, all instrumental, but there would be no nplace for vocals with songs like this.

USA is home to every genre of music, and if it wasn't born here, we do a damn good job carrying it on. There's literally thousands of bands from the States that are worth mentioning. It's ludicrous to narrow it down to one. Seriously? RatM and Monster Magnet as BEST from US? Kurwa, man.

Well, I live in America, and I know a lot of people say no good music comes from here, but that's where they're way wrong. They only say that because they only see the pop shit that gets blasted all over the radio and MTV.

Tom Waits
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
Supersax
Charlie Parker
Candlebox (only their self-titled)
Clint Mansel
Kronos Quartet
Corrosion of Conformity (back when they were hardcore punk/crossover)
Johnny Cash
King Crimson
No Doubt (but only the pop singles, not that ska shit)
Opiate for the Masses (just their album "The Spore")
Robert Johnson
Russian Circles (but only live, the albums don't do them any justice)
System of a Down
Mindless Self Indulgence

Yeah, that about covers it, there's others that I like, but it's only for like, one or two songs (example Goo Goo Dolls - "Iris").

I like a fair few non-metal bands from Aus, here are a few:

Rose Tattoo - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZZnhBQXRaI

The Angels - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CW-tza2Job4

Powderfinger - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9Hn1Xxy0uI

Billy Thorpe And The Aztecs - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sSDrDQ0VEU

Paul Kelly - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OE9b_Qu6Cco

Cold Chisel - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inKlN0ScObA

And of course, the unforgettable kings of Psychobilly...Zombie Ghost Train - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaM19vkZXVs

There are others, but yeah. Aussie music is where it's at.

Modest Mouse and The Doors are both from the US, and both bands have been equally as addicting to my ears. Fuck, both bands are just amazing. The Doors is, in my opinion, the greatest rock band ever. Modest Mouse is just plain awesome, simple as that.

Ratos de Porão.

even though they're on the archives they're pretty much a hardcore band.
Also, Raimundos. They had some hardcore influences but their sound was pretty original rock music.

I'm gonna go with Raubtier, industrial "metal" from the far north. Powerful and heavy, yet poppy and incredibly catchy stuff. Of course, it's Sweden - we got plenty of greats if you do a little digging, metal and non-metal.

Cool to see them getting mentioned. A friend of mine might actually join them since the guitarist is getting tired of playing guitar and singing at the same time or something.

Anyways, mind will always be Local H. Songs like "Hey Rita" are just amazing. It's an absolute tragedy that they were considered a Nirvana ripoff band and lumped in with all that. There's so much more to them, from hardcore punk, to classic rock, to indie rock (of the Chicago variety), to weird experimental synthy whatever. Don't let "Bound for the Floor" confuse you, they're a lot more than that.

Good stuff. If you're into bluegrass and such, check out The .357 String Band, which I can't recommend enough. I think you may dig them: http://www.myspace.com/357stringband

If you get the chance, check them out live. Absolutely fantastic.

Given the size of the US and dozens of choices, I'll narrow it down to California. What immediately comes to mind would be Black Ice. Playing some sort of icy deathrock/experimental soundscapes with an excellent sense for creating and sustaining a nervous tension in their songs. Their releases just seem to be getting stronger and more unique as well.

The Smashing Pumpkins by far. I would be interested to see how many people here honestly cannot find some enjoyment or appreciation in at least one song they have done.

King Crimson: they are from England

Crap, for some reason I thought they were from California. Well, sometimes it can be kind of hard to remember what country every band is from when you listen to well over 1,000 bands/artists.
