Flying around Denali (Mt. McKinley), North America's highest peak (20,320 feet).

From the nearest town, 50 miles away:

That's the 14,000 foot north face of Denali on the left. Too big to get a decent picture of...

Awesome photos, Meganerd! Alaska is a place I'd really like to live someday (along with Scotland), but is it really as full of rednecks as my liberal coastal state of Washington would have me believe?

Well... It's different (I grew up in Seattle). If it makes you feel any better, most of us can't stand Sarah Palin or those godawful reality shows. You won't find many football, nascar, light beer types up here, but you'll find lots of huntin' fishin' guns n' booze... You'll also find very few pretentious, faux intellectual hipsters. Politically, the state ends up going heavily republican, but in reality everybody's a pot smoking "don't tread on me" libertarian. And we all LOVE bluegrass for some reason... VERY few people into extreme music, but we're a tight knit, friendly group all across the state, and there are fun local bands, but nothing of national caliber. Alaska's heavily xtian unfortunately, but a little adversity does us good right?

Since the place is such a outdoor sports / scenery mecca, there will always be left wing strongholds if you know where to look. Homer, Girdwood, Talkeetna, Midtown Anchorage, west Fairbanks, etc. Come on up for a visit! But if you do, be forewarned that just about everybody who visits leaves determined to live here.

Altarsingore - Lower Mainland BC kicks ass! I went to college in Bellingham, just across the border. Spent quite a bit of time goofing off in Vancouver and hiking around Squamish.

Took these with my new Nikon 12 megapixel camera. These are a direct contrast to all the frost and snow pictures taken by you northern hemisphere guys, and they were taken in balmy temperatures ranging from 28-33 deg centigrade.

Taken in the middle of the day in scorching heat at a place named Wangi Point. Good fishing spot.
Image

Both of these were taken on Lake Macquarie, as sunset approaches.
Image

Image

When night fell while out on the boat (in these last two), a strange thing happens in the lake. When the surface of the water is disturbed, tiny bacteria in the water create a phosphoric effect, radiating iridescent blue sparks wherever a trail, or wake is left, which looks amazing.

EDIT: Re-sized pics.

Amateur, though I probably will pursue something in the field, research & field work sounds appealing. As for the pics, I enjoy taking them and improving my mushroom photography helps lots with identifying many species.

Already posted two. :) Some edible and poisonous species as well, none of which are known to be typically deadly (My pictures of those ones I found aren't all that great sadly).

Somewhere between Banff & Jasper, Alberta.

Looks like an expensive camera forestcorpse, nice detail on that fungi.

Cool polypore, if you wanted an actual name for it, you might be able to get one by posting the pics on mushroomobserver.org. They have all sorts of knowledgeable hunters from around the world and its where I've gotten many of my ids.
