Internal Decay is another excellent Swedish death metal band. They too have a thing for making really melodic music, but they have plenty of heavy moments too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGmF2dmRnwA

Listening to this now, its really good thanks man

Any good recommendations for something in the vein of Scream Bloody Gore, Leprosy or Consuming Impulse?

More interested in the older style, before the typical DM sound became synonymous with a heavy low end and deeper vocals.

If you haven't already, definitely check out Morgoth's Resurrection Absurd and The Eternal Fall.

Eructation- Demo 1992
I was surprised I was the first to review it on the archives, it runs just under 20 minutes and is about as close to perfection as it gets in demo form.

Comecon - Converging Conspiracies (1993)
Image

Van Drunen on vocals + a more off kilter take on the Stockholm sound = win. The band's first album featured L.G. Petrov of Entombed on vocals and is solid, too, if not as interesting as this second album.

Deteriorot - In Ancient Beliefs (2001)
Image

Though this came out in 2001 this full length is the product of a band that had been around for a long time without releasing anything but demos. The band is from NJ but the sound has a blackened edge to it and wouldn't be all that out of place among bands from, say, Finland.

Abramelin - Abremalin (1996)
Image

Not too distant from stuff like Iniquity, the band has a nice mixture of brutality and melodicism.

Aw, damn. Well, if I ever see it, I'll try to get it. I get a nice feeling owning rare albums, and Xenomorph sound really nice. I still have hope! :)

Wicked Innocence - Omnipotence
Out of all the albums in this thread, I believe that this is the one everyone should hear.It is brutal and eerie sounding with some melodic parts. The vocals are really nice as well. Reminds me of Finnish Death Metal and Demilich especially.

I have Worship and Opium Empire. I wouldn't mind going further back, but they're just not good enough to delve further into. Worship is fucking strange, and not for everyone, and Opium Empire I don't particularly listen to often.

Has anyone mentioned Rippikoulu yet? Their demo Musta Seremonia is really awesome. Really dark slow-paced sickeningly heavy death metal.

Cremation from Canada. They only released about four demos in the early 90's, but some real crushing stuff. The Riffs sound similiar to the early NY OSDM sound. The vocals are some of sickest shit that i have ever heard. And the drumming has J.Read behind the kit so plenty of insane blasting. Also 3 of the demos were re-realeased together by Nuclear War Now last year.

Well, Nihilist's first demo came almost a year before Carnage's first demo.

Nihilist spawned Swedish death metal. Carnage didn't really spawn new acts, but the breakup of the band revived Dismember. Dark Recollections was basically the second Swedish death metal album after Left Hand Path.

My favorites were all mentioned except for:

Abhorrence (fin) - Abhorrence (1990)

Early Finnish death metal that won't disappoint if you're a fan of the scene. Both their demo and EP are band-sanctioned downloads on their site. Enjoy!

Scattered Remnants - Inherent Perversion from the "Inherent Perversion" album. Vaginal Vomit Records, 1995.

I added over a hundred new tunes to youtube within the last week not previously found anywhere on there. Many of them death metal and around a decade or so old. I plan on doing a lot more so if you have out of print or hard to find requests let me know, with 13k+ cds and many of them older there's a chance I may have it.

Great thread, guys!

Mindloss - Gorfest (1991)

Not an unknown band by any means but this one is a bit of a gem in itself.
Brutal and crushing old school death metal from Netherlands. A real must hear.

Gorefest Mindloss ^^^ and it's follow up False are good stuff, pretty underrated as well.

Their last two albums, before breaking up, La Muerte and Rise to Ruin were good as well.

I agree with everything here. However, I thought Erase was pretty good, too, even though it straddled the lines between death metal and death'n'roll at times. False is perhaps my favourite, though, but then again, a lot of Gorefest is very good.

Two that I consider classics that have not yet been mentioned, and are regularly overlooked:

Messiah: Hymn to Abramelin, an incredibly dark, atmospheric album, released in 1986, by the Swiss band Messiah. Features an occasional Baloff like vocal approach. It is very thrash-oriented, but I consider it to be too dark to be considered just thrash. And it has a song on it called Space Invaders.

Master: Master and On the Seventh Day, God Created... Master, vicious and unrelenting US OSDM. The first album is a lot faster and thrashier than the second, but the second more than makes up for it in heaviness, a brutal, steamroller of an album, with deeper vocals than the first, and cleaner production(by cleaner I mean less noisy, but obviously still just as raw as any other OSDM release).

Cryptic Tales - Valley of the Dolls

Image

Rather experimental death metal/grindcore from Poland, atmospheric and full of emotion. Features great use of keyboards. And if this isn't beautiful, I don't know what is.

Disharmonic Orchestra - Not to be Undimensional Conscious

Another experimental band, this one's from Austria. Martin Messner from Disastrous Murmur on drums, what else can I say? The record is definitely worth a listen for anyone.

Ripping Corpse's unreleased album is just as good as Dreaming with the Dead, if not better. That's definitely worth a mention too.

Another recent favorite of mine. Orth play some catchy, upbeat death metal with some cool technical flourishes here and there. The production is crisp/crunchy and everything just works. Surprisingly under-appreciated.
