Both threads are missing all of these:

Image

Uncanny is GREAT Swedeath. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhTkLdQSaAo , incredibly melodic and keeps you interested the whole way through.

Image

Mangled Torsos. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GSJ36m2zgk , German death metal, again with a very melodic twist. The vocals are SICKENINGLY guttural for this style of death metal.

Image

Internal Decay is another excellent Swedish death metal band. They too have a thing for making really melodic music, but they have plenty of heavy moments too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGmF2dmRnwA

Image

Another German band with great vocals that almost appeal to black metal (though they're still growls). This band uses a lot of keyboards and has pretty long songs. Great album though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnIjS6Iua0o

Image

Not sure if someone posted Rottrevore or not. Pennsylvanian death metal and some of the lowest nastiest guitars and vocals ever for a US band. Their lyrics are political in nature. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JMDhm0NCHE

I also want to re-mention Wombbath, Electrocution, and Gorement as some of my favorites.

How could I forget THIS little gem:

Image

The art is done by Dan Seagrave, and I personally think it's one of his strangest looking covers. This album is disgustingly rare, and I've only been able to find 1 or 2 blogs with a download. The downloads don't even have the same track times as the metal-archives entry so I don't know what to believe. But anyway, British death metal with more sick vocals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5VEir7O4uU , the quality is bad but you get the point.

I'll just leave this here for those of you that are interested.. http://rateyourmusic.com/list/danielana ... tal_albums

Nembrionic - Psycho One Hundred

1995

Killer heavy as shit death metal from the Netherlands. This is the only track I could find online streaming but its pretty short. Not all the songs are of this length. Ive also always loved that artwork.

It's a strange thing about death metal.

The quality of the artwork usually matches the quality of the music.

Pyrexia's first album was pretty sweet Suffocation worship, then they got way too caught up in tha slammz.

Pretty well known by any standards anyway.

Here are some that I like.

Vomiturition - A Leftover
Finland had some of my favorite death metal bands and here is one of them.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yb8GeqVP ... re=related

Antropomorphia - Necromantic Love Songs
One of the best EP's I've ever heard, but impossible to find.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUH7gI45jjY

Belial - Wisdom of Darkness
Yep, another band from Finland.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd9OVFopjkM

Bloodstone - Hour of the Gate
Pretty obscure Swedish band and they fuckin rule.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDndkUFjXRY

Burial - Relinquished Souls
One of my favorite Dutch bands.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3S4gRtNA0Q

Ghost - The Lost of Mercy
Severely unknown Polish DM.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQuN6s3Z ... re=related

Sororicide - The Entity
One of THE best old school death metal albums ever.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqZxFuFi ... re=related

Polluted Inheritance - Ecocide
Out of print and so hard to find...this album rules.

Some or all of these may have been mentioned already (didn't go through the whole thread), but I'll post some of my favourites.

Luciferion - Demonication (The Manifest) (1994)
Image
One of my favourite old-school death metal acts. Music is actually quite fast and there's plenty going on. Vocals are vicious, except on "Blasphemer", where I'm inclined to believe there's a different vocalist, but the whole album is great. Maybe one flaw is that the intro goes on a little too long, but once the music starts, prepare to be attacked. http://www.myspace.com/luciferionsouls

Rottrevore - Iniquitous (1993)
Image
One of the more bass-heavy old-school death metal albums around, this album focuses more on the riff rather than the speed. The album barely gets past mid-speed, with only a few faster sections on hand, but I feel the album gets the message across without needing to resort to all-out blasting and riff chaos. Definitely a gem. http://www.myspace.com/rottrevore

Bloodstone - Hour Of The Gate (1996)
Image
This one can be a little grating for some. There's constantly something going on, and there's little room to breathe. Having said that, in the right mood, this can be the best thing. http://www.myspace.com/bloodstonesweden

Krhoma Death - Grating Into Corpse (1994)
Image
A very unknown release, but hopefully it can gain some cult status soon. Some nice work here. Drumming is a little predictable after a while, but overall, it's not bad at all. (No MySpace link)

Image
Blood - O Agios Pethane (1993)
An awesome slab of oldschool death metal/grindcore from Germany. Fairly popular in some cult circles but a band that is sadly overlooked all too often.

Image
Caducity - Whirler of Fate (1997)
Epic, powerful Belgian death metal with some interesting narrative lyrics and a generally fantastical theme.

Image
Cianide - The Dying Truth (1992)
Not exactly an unknown band, especially now that they're on Razorback, but they're not mentioned very often and they really deserve to be. Thick, dense American death metal chock full of doomy grooves.

Image
Gangrena - Infected Ideologies (1994)
Catchy, bassy Portuguese death metal with a socio-political approach. Good stuff.

Image
Immortalis - Indicium De Mortuis (1991)
Eerie death metal from Germany. Crunchy and somewhat thrashy, it includes some vicious vocals and creepy atmosphere.

Image
Morgue - Eroded Thoughts (1993)
Though they hailed from the US, these guys seemed to mix a fair bit of European sound into their death metal. Comparisons can be drawn to Asphyx, Winter and Autopsy.

Image
Order From Chaos - Stillbirth Machine (1993)
Reasonably well-known but still worth a mention. These Americans played some truly vicious, filthy blackened death metal.

Image
Phlebotomized - Immense, Intense, Suspense (1994)
A Dutch band that played some really odd avant-garde death metal. Symphonic and melodic but not melodeathy, it includes clean vocals and other weird additions. May not be everyone's cup of tea, but surely an interesting listen.

Morgoth - Cursed (1991) recorded at Woodhouse Studio in Dortmund Germany, where Unleashed recorded their masterpiece Where No life Dwells. Great doom inspired churning German death metal with good but raw production.

Sorry no youtube links can't access it from work.

Image

Sinister - Cross The Styx (1992) Very technical for it's time and very brutal. Excellent Death Metal from the Netherlands. Cross the Styx was produced by Alex Krull of Atrocity fame. A must have along with follow up

Thanatos - Emerging from the Netherworlds (1990 Shark Records)

Another Dutch gem. Damn, Shark Records had a lot of good shit on it. Thanatos and Massacra are too of my favs from that label. This album is a mixture of thrash and death, but very very good.

It saddens me to see this one still going strong with the thrash metal thread on the second page already. :(

And that Thanatos cover is badass. I also have the Sinister album Cross the Styx and it is one of my favorite death metal albums. Brutal and nice grinding thrashy riffs without going into brutal death territory. I have Creative Killings as well from them which is a snoozefest for me.

Convulse- World without God (1992 Thrash Record, re-issued by Relapse in 2010)

Brutal Finnish death metal

Image

Carbonized - For the Security (1991 Thrash Records)

Features Lars Rosenberg also of Entombed. Great forgotten Swedish DM gem.

Image

Carnage - Dark Recollections (1990 Earache)

Fairly well known, but damn what a masterpiece I had to add it.

I promised I'd be back with a few gems of my own, so here I am.

First up, one of the only old school Swedish death metal albums I listen to. Lately it's been mentioned a few times in the rec forum, but generally, it's very rarely I see the name thrown around. Great prog/tech death from '92.

Afflicted - Prodigal Sun, 1992
Image
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foZXBdlXmE4

The Mexican scene is one of my favorites from back in the days. Similar to the Finnish in that it put focus on atmosphere and feeling, though generally more raw and drawn out than twisted. Cenotaph is a great band, and "The Gloomy Reflections..." is an awesome record. Great use of keys, and an absolutely devastating vocal.

Cenotaph - The Gloomy Reflections Of Our Hidden Sorrows, 1992
Image
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yj3nDOsX7bQ

How many death metal bands from Lithuania have you listened to? Not many I'd wager, and me neither. Conscious Rot is just that, however, and what a treat. "The Soil" is their last demo, but it's album length and ridiculously good. Chaotic, slightly technical brutal death metal, very bass heavy.

Conscious Rot - The Soil, 1994
Image
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVD6CFet8AY

Man, I love Lovecraftian death metal, you know, where everything is about absurd, astral horrors. I also love death metal in the vein of Immolation (my favorite band), twisted and jagged. If you're like me, say hello to Eldritch Horror. Only got 2 demos out, and I've only managed to find one of them on the net, but damn the 3 songs on are good stuff. Not as technical as Immolation, but you still get that jagged sense of melody. Great stuff.

Eldritch Horror - Untouched by the Sun, 1993
http://www.myspace.com/eldritchhorror

When people start talking of dark, crushing (American) death metal of the nineties, it's inevitably stiff like Incantation, Immolation and Infester that get mentioned. Why no love for Imprecation? Their only full length is awesome, crushing mid paced death metal with clear black influences. Great atmosphere as well, but pretty raw stuff. Do yourself a favor and take a look at these Texans.

Imprecation - Theurgia Goetia Summa, 1995
Image
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vr4_LsLSp8s

Unlike most, I just can't seem to like most of the death metal coming out of Poland. I mean, Vader really isn't that interesting. However, there is always an exception to the rule, and the exception to my rule of 'Polish death metal sucks' is Kingdom of the Lie. They only released a single demo back in 1993, and it is FUCKING AWESOME. I told you already, I love Immolation, and this is the band that is closest to the sound Immolation had at their peak ("Here..." and "Failures...") I have stumbled upon, and that's from well before Immolation released their best work. Brutal old school technical death. Very twisted and very raw.

Kingdom of the Lie - About the Rising Star, 1993
Image
(Sorry, but I can't find a song online. Do yourself a favor and track the demo down somewhere on the net, it's definitely worth it).

I have plenty more I want to share with you guys, but that has to be later.

Here at the end I'll mention a couple of bands that are pretty well known (and most of them have a couple reviews here on the archives too), but I rarely see mentioned. Most should know the, if you don't - check them out!

Disincarnate - James Murphys (Death, Obituary) band. Awesome.

Gorefest. Old albums are great old school European brutal death. Great sense of melody too.

Miasma. "Changes" is an awesome album. Death/doom, Funebrarum owes a lot to this release. Weird, too.

Dark Heresy -- "Abstract Principles Taken To Their Logical Extremes". This band were pretty big on the London underground scene for a while in the mid 90s. Technical and interesting Death/Doom riffs and arrangements, and some intelligent and clever lyrical writing.

Dark Heresy -- The Last Temptation Of Pan (YouTube link)

Image

Cemetary's first album "An Evil Shade Of Grey". Whilst not exactly the most unknown band/album, still hugely underrated. Soundwise, it is haunting Doomy Death Metal, somewhere between early Entombed and early Tiamat. The atmosphere on this album is so eerie, it always gives me the impression of some nightmare-haunted forgotten forest (very fitting cover art).

Cemetary -- Where The Rivers Of Madness Stream (YouTube link)

Also, seconding the mention of Morgoth's "Cursed" above. Fantastic album. Here's one of the best tracks: Morgoth -- Opportunity Is Gone (YouTube link)

Here are a few:

Image
Lord Gore - The Autophagous Orgy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehtpVRt5prU

I don't actually know how well known this is, it got reissued recently I believe, but I still don't see it mentioned that often. The vocals are inhumanly low, I almost can't believe it.

Image
Capharnaum - Reality Only Fantasized

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRmbbOZIyc4

Great old school technical/progressive death metal. One of my favorites.

Image
Mass Psychosis - Face

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNuEiCI4ZcI

Excellent old school death metal with killer vocals.

Image
Solstice - S/T

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uRyaYkymJY

I don't really like the vocals that much but the great instrumentation more than makes up for it.

Desultory - Bitterness (1994 Metal Blade)

What Swedish Melodic DM could have been!!! This album, along with their debut had a ton of potential. Desultory had melody along with powerful vocals and meaningful lyrics, great riffs without being pussified in any sense of the word. Too bad it all we to shit right after with their follow up. Cover is by Necrolord.

Xenomorph - Empyreal Regimes (1995)

Some pretty cool technical death metal we got here. While not as technically unhinged as say Unquestionable Presence, the songs are still complex and fun to listen to. I haven't listened to this album for quite a while now, but I remember enjoying its laid-back, darkened sound. Good stuff.

Your description and the picture of the Alien intrigued me, so I'm listening to some of their stuff on MySpace. I'm really enjoying this. The vocals aren't ordinary, and the music sounds very nice. This is definitely going into my wanted list for future purchases. Cheers, man.

Great to see others digging this release as well. Thought I was the only one!

P.S.

Good luck tracking this one down, Mikey. Rare doesn't even begin to describe this release.

That Xenomorph album looks interesting. I'm going to have to download it.

Here's more of my favorites that haven't been mentioned:

Infester - To the Depths... in Degradation

This is the scariest sounding DM album I've ever heard. Its in the New York style that focuses on brutal crushing riffs and low vocals. It also has some nice atmospheric parts. You can purchase it from Moribund records.

Mordicus - Dances From the Left

Finnish DM played in the Swedish style. Very Carcass influenced in some parts with the dual high and low vocalists. It has my favorite DM instrumental ever on the album: Cybernetic Summer.

Wicked Innocence - Omnipotence

Out of all the albums in this thread, I believe that this is the one everyone should hear.It is brutal and eerie sounding with some melodic parts. The vocals are really nice as well. Reminds me of Finnish Death Metal and Demilich especially.
