I obviously lifted this topic idea from the one about Death Metal, but my intentions are good.

Post some obscure Thrash Metal albums, EPs or even demos. Please avoid posting releases that are more common to thrashers. Description + link would be great.

Sacrifice - Forward To Termination (1987)

Image

This album is badass from start to finish. The production is quite raw and their style is fast and aggressive. Great riff-per-dollar ratio.

Forward To Termination/Terror Strikes

Pariah - Blaze Of Obscurity (1989)

Pariah is basically the NWOBHM band Satan with a new singer. This album has some unique guitar playing and the songs are of high quality.

not 100% obscure, but not well known enough. everyone who claims to like thrash should have this.

Sabbat - Dreamweaver.

http://metal-archives.com/release.php?id=491

extremely fast / technical stuff, the vocalist sings (SINGS!) so fast you can hardly keep up with what he is saying,if you think of his voice as an instrument , then he is playing as fast as the guitars. sometimes it makes me think that the vocals and guitars are fighting a war. this is essential thrash metal, essential music in general.

my fav song from it - "do dark horses dream of nightmares?"

It's not that obscure, but it's still awesome.

^^^ Win win win. Gammacide is awesome.

Intruder - Psycho Savant - Ultra technical but filled with great riffs. There are a ton of really cool solos on this album too. The first two songs are the best but it's all worth hearing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUZvbCgwRAA

Post Mortem - Coroner's Office - This isn't so much of a gem as it is an enjoyable album. Really big hardcore influence in this band. Short songs except for the awesome 12 minute song (can't remember the name right now). Definitely worth checking out if you can find it cheap.

Uncle Slam - Say Uncle - This is almost like Suicidal Tendencies debut. It has a cool Punk flavour that most albums seem to miss. Still, it's pretty Thrashy. It was just re-issued so try to find it.

Xentrix - For Whose Advantage? (1990)

Here is another one from the UK. These guys have great songs with several tempo changes. The lyrics are more on the political side.

Questions

Paradox - Heresy (1990)

This is a concept album about the injustice of the church. The vocals are powerful and there are a lot of heavy riffs that are often harmonized.

700 Years On

Artillery - By Inheritance (1990)

Image

Technical Thrash Metal at its finest.

Italy's "Nuclear Simphony," aren't exactly mind-blowing or terribly essential, but their "Lost In Wonderland" album is a fairly obscure and solid enough thrash offering that was released on SPV/Steamhammer.

Outrage - Black Clouds

Very bassy/noisy production, with metallica influence on the vocals, check this out if you're wanting to try something new

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yYZcR46ARI

Vendetta - Brain Damage

absolute technical masterpiece, this album is highly overlooked and needs to be in every thrasher's library

Antagonist (USA, Green Bay) - Antagonist (1994)

The thrashingest tech-thrash to exist. The production is raw, the vocals are aggressive, the lyrics are violent, but the musicianship is top-notch and the song-writing far more interesting than what one would typically find in the sub-genre. Techxodus, if you will, or maybe what a follow up to Peace Sells should have sounded like. Extremely fresh and fun.

Aspid (Rus) - Extravasation (1992)

Quite simply, the best riffs ever. The two reviews on the Archives describe it quite well; technical thrash/death in the Destruction vein of things, with absolutely massive riffs played with a perfect buzzsaw tone. Every member plays their heart out, though.

Chaos Horde - 1986 Demo

Raw, hectic, shriek-filled death/thrash in the vein of Sadus' Death to Posers and Anacrusis' Annihilation Complete demos. It's a little inconsistent since the craziest material is placed at the beginning (MAAAD MOOOONK!) but still a great headbanger all the way through. Their singer is insane and possessed, and there is a slightly gloomy atmosphere also in the Anacrusis vein not too often explored. A bit of punk, too. One of the best demo bands out there.

Hexenhaus - A Tribute to Insanity (1988)

If you like early Mercyful Fate and mid 80's Destruction, you'll like this. Semi-technical mid-tempo thrashing that is clearly indebted to Sifringer's riff mastery and a demented vocalist similarly worshipping Schmier, but the leads come courtesy of Mike Wead which means that there is a heavy presence of NWOBHM-like melody as well. 'As Darkness Falls' in particular is one of the greatest thrash epics ever written.

Sore Plexus - Haptephobic (1999)

This one is weird and really left-field so I wouldn't recommend it to most, but fans of thrash that tries to be outside of the box could like it. The Archives calls them progressive metal, but riffwise there is definitely a strong thrash bent. I can only compare them to other German(-neighboring) progressive/thrash bands like Depressive Age, Secrecy, Flaming Anger, and 90's Coroner, but they have this unusual almost alternative influence to their sound as well. Again, if you want true headbanging thrash you should avoid this one, but it is a pretty special album.

Shotgun Justice is terribly awful imo. Absolutely horrible flat tone. No life to the vocals, Bob Reid doesn't stand out in Razor like Sheepdog did.

Sure hes no sheepdog but his pissed off vocals are awesome in their own way. Makes the music even angrier and meaner and its the perfect album to work out to because of this.

Torture - Storm Alert (1989)
Some of the songs a bit long winded but some killer tracks on here like Ignominious SLaughter and Terror Kingdom. Great Death/thrash.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-XU9kRlMDU

Ulysess Siren - Above the Ashes (demos from '85 and '87)
Quite fast and technical with some very catchy riffs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAsQf695gi4

Artillery - Terror Squad (1987)
Everyone seems to cite them for By Inheritance but I always preferred this album. Nice catchy, crunchy riffs and those vocals are awesome.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzuSCj_bLZ4

Vendetta - Brain Damage (1988)
Goes for a more Bay area like sound instead of the brutal or teutonic sound like most of the german bands of the time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gu0RUoSj ... re=related

E-X-E - Stricken by Might (1987)
Love their catchy NWOBHM like riffs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXhLmtEL ... re=related

Soothsayer - Have a Good Time (1989)
Fast punkish thrash from Canada.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frpVgC0ai2o

Wrath - Nothing to Fear (1987)
Quite technical thrash
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-IiBYLsHtU

Aftermath - Don't Cheer me up (1988)
Catchy thrash with some great high pitched vocals
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80s6dN5-qzY

Tyrant's Reign - Year of the Tyrants (EP) (1987)
Only an EP but great material in the bay area style.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ycUEXrU ... re=related

Chakal - Abominable Anno Domini (1987)
Dirty thrash in typical cogumello style of the time. I preferred them over Holocausto and Sarcofago.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIMjxRQEzY4

Schizo - Main Frame Collapse (1989)
Holy shit is this underrated. I don't know if i have ever heard these guys get mentioned. Dirty and raw black/thrash.

Quite a few more I could add but Executer - Rotten Authorities (1991) is one that I have been playing a lot lately.

Production is raw and dirty like other Brazillian thrash at the time with some nice grinding riffs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xDb2eiY5S8

Oh and Armoros - Pieces (1988)
Took a while to remember this one which I had on the tip of my tongue. Very underrated brutal thrash. Quite Slayer influenced. Listen to Euphoria.

Now that's a "gem" in all sense of the word. Those riffs aren't only quite original but fucking bone crushing! I am going to have to get a hold of this one.

Morbid Saint - Spectrum Of Death (1988)

Thrash with some early Death Metal influences. Unfortunately this band only released one album.

Virus - Force Recon (1988 Combat Records) Killer British Thrash band.

Image

Evil Dead - Annihilation of Civilization (1989 SPV / Steamhammer)

This record fucking shreds start to finish. Classic Reaganomics era L.A. thrash metal that drives home the fear of potential nuclear holocaust and environmental catastrophies. This is the type of thrash, today's bands try to aspire to. Classic Ed Repka artwork make this a must have underground classic.

This thread is fantastic, I'll definitely be checking out a lot of this stuff. I see those death or black metal gems threads pop up once in awhile, but I don't remember an obscure thrash gems thread. Some of this stuff looks really bad ass. I'd especially like to collect more classic brutal/evil thrash, like old Slayer.

Turbo - Ostatni Wojownik

I know there is an English version, but the Polish version has a much more fitting production and the vocalist doesn't sound as awkward. This album is full of great and slightly unique riffs with very memorable lead work. Although this takes an obvious influence from Master Of Puppets (the good bits, anyway), I'd say this is a little bit ahead of its time for 1987.

My vote goes to anything by Artillery or Holy Moses. Someone posted By Inheritance, which is surely the pinnacle of technical thrash.

Violator - Chemical Assault (2006 Kill Again Records)

Killer new school thrash gem out of Brazil. These guys are one of the few newer thrash bands that know how the fuck it's done right. Their songs are fast, precise with killer riffs and vocals that deal with political and violent topics, in the vein of Kreator to Coma of Souls.

Image

Atrophy - Violent by Nature and Socialized Hate

Fucking band shreds, both available in limited number re-editions of 2000 through Metal Mind Productions.

and speaking of Toxik some more killer Reaganomics Thrash found in "Think This"

In your opinion.

I haven't heard Mental Vortex, but the albums preceding it are fucking ace.

And of course, Watchtower are amazing.

Dyoxen - First Among Equals
Amazing Canadian thrash metal that reminds me alot of Killing Is My Business... era Megadeth. Not the best production, but suits well with the music, which is technical and melodic, yet still heavy and energetic. The way thrash metal should be! Good stuff.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYs9lpPz5uc

Paradox - Heresy
This is also really good technical(-ish) thrash metal that can be very melodic, especially the vocals. Superb songwriting! The riffs are extremely memorable, too.

How many Watchtowers do you think there are? There is only one, so you would say Watchtower IS amazing.

I mean, you wouldn't say 'My favorite band are Watchtower'. That is every bit as incorrect and retarded as saying Watchtower are amazing.

Watchtower is amazing, though.

While looking up the Aspid recommendation, I came across this list on RYM. I can't access MySpace or YouTube at work right now, and I recognize virtually none of them, so I figured I'd post it here.

Someone posted By Inheritance, which is surely the pinnacle of technical thrash.

No, that would be either Energetic Disassembly or Mental Vortex. By Inheritance has nothing on those two. Not in terms of technicality or songwriting.

Agreed, Mental Vortex is a perfect album. Coroner's finest hour for sure.

Holy Terror - Terror and Submission (1987)

Holy Terror - Mind Wars (1988)

Both albums are fantastic speed/thrash releases. Mind Wars has a better production.

Dyoxen - First Among Equals
Amazing Canadian thrash metal that reminds me alot of Killing Is My Business... era Megadeth. Not the best production, but suits well with the music, which is technical and melodic, yet still heavy and energetic. The way thrash metal should be! Good stuff.

Dyoxen never really did it for me. They just got boring for me quickly and didn't stand above the crowd. Not really sure why. I guess they just sounded kind of average.

Here are a couple of Belgian releases.

Evil Sinner - Evil Sinner (1989)

These guys seem to get left out when all the belgian bands like Target and Cyclone get mentioned. Not sure why as I find them better than both those bands. Music varies a fair bit from track to track but mostly reminds me of the bay area. If you don't like this track then get your ears checked. :P

Target - Mission Executed (1987)

Technical thrash at it's best.

Not Beligian but I just came across my CD while looking for something and had to add it.
Ritual Sacrifice - The Early Years 1988 - 1992

Very good band that never really made it. The music is very fast and brutal in the vein of Dark Angel and Morbid Saint.

Hey Its you!!! By the way, Technical Thrash Sucks!!! :p
