I've never been to a bad show (haven't been to very many though), but the one I saw last, in October, was the least awesome yet. (Evile/Entombed/Amon Amarth).

We stand out in the damp, freezing cold for the better part of an hour before we're let in. This was just a few weeks after Evile's bassist Mike Alexander died. No one knew for certain whether Evile would be playing live or not. So, we finally get in where it's warm. We then wait at the stage for one and a half fucking hours, looking at the roadies setting the stage up. They hadn't brought themselves a couple of nice metal CD's to pump us. Nope, instead they had put the radio on over the sound system. So there we stand, before the beginning of a metal gig, waiting for well over and hour listening to shit like Madonna and random pop-punk.

Finally something happens - everything goes dark, and everyone shouts in excitement. 20 seconds waiting, excitement dies. We wait another 20 minutes before the set really begins. Entombed come on, telling us that Evile have skipped out. As unfortunate as that was, the night was pure awesome after that. Except for the low volume. Leaving a semi-big metal show without temporarily reduced hearing is not acceptable.

i remember i have heard some horrible songs while waiting for bands to start i dont know why they dont bother to bring metal albums at metal concerts, weirdest thing is the loudest band i have ever heard live is the red shore and they are deathcore but by far the loudest band i have seen live

Haha amen to that! I'm still in high school so you can imagine how that shit plays out all the time, but what can you do...

As for me; though, I've only been to 3 concerts and my "worst" in this case is the least good, which was Summer Slaughter back in July. I made the mistake of going to early and having too sit through all the shit bands until Origin came on about 4 hours after I got there. After that point it was a blast.

...and your point is? I've seen Mastodon headline twice, and not once did they say a word to the audience at either gig. Still two of the best gigs I've ever been to though. So what if they don't say 'you guys in [insert town name here] are the greatest crowd ever' every five minutes, that shit gets old fast.

Back on topic, I once got free tickets to a local show when I was about 13, and found out when I got inside that the band were Christian. I decided to stay anyway, figuring it might not be too obvious in the band's music.
I was wrong. The local god-squad were out in force, and the crowd included several pensioners and some of the ugliest people I have ever seen attempting to pogo with absolutely no rhythm. After about 30 minutes of weak alt-rock, the lead singer started reading quotations from John the Baptist, and started telling us to let Jesus into our hearts, all to wild cheers from the audience. It was at this point that my mates and I decided to make a swift exit, only to find doors at both the front and back of the venue were closed and for some reason, bolted (in hindsight, this seems blatantly unsafe, but the venue in question is notoriously shit).
Worst hour of my life, let alone gig.

Good job I didn't because since then I've seen some amazing bands there including Stiff Little Fingers and Gallows :P
The place has just been bought up by some local metal fans who used to own a pub that put on some great gigs, so I'm expecting it to take an upturn in the next couple of months. :D

Motley Crue, hands down.

The Crue themselves weren't bad at all. Amazing light show, great fire effects, awesome performance. But the opening acts were Hinder and Theory of a Deadman.....both of them were just atrocious. Hinder went up first, and played a 30 minute set of shitty ballads......there was probably one track in the whole set where they used electric guitars. I was pretty glad, as was the entire audience, when they went off.

Theory of a Deadman goes next. It was pretty much the exact same performance as Hinder's. That's why I severely dislike these "post-grunge" bands....they all sound exactly the same! But at the end of Theory's performance, Mick Mars joined them onstage to do a rendition of "Smoke on The Water", which was terrible. And I've heard some bad renditions of that song.

To top it all off, I kept getting beer thrown at me by the people in the upper rows, because I kept standing up. Joke's on them, though. It was an area event; those beers were probably 5$ a piece!

The Casualties were awful, I have no idea why they were playing after Crowbar, or even on the same bill as them and The Acacia Strain+Hatebreed, They sounded like a middle school punk band covering the soundtrack of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater.

The Knitting Factory, a venue in NYC, shut down a show during the opener... The Acacia Strain, who were amazing, but apparently they thought it would be a good idea to book TAS, have no security, and expect that there would be no mosh pit or crowd involvement. I don't even remember who was supposed to headline, but I fucking hate the venue. Two weeks later, I was halfway to NYC when I found out that they cancelled a Napalm Death show because they expected the same thing. I have not even considered going to a show there since.

August Burns Red were one of the least captivating bands I have ever seen. They didn't involve the audience at all, their music simply didn't sound good, and they had to follow an intense opening set by Suicide Silence. SS were actually a really good opener, I don't like their music, but they were intense, very tight, and great at getting the crowd going.

Winds of Plague & Born of Osiris, among others, all sound exactly the same. I have seen these two bands play the same show at least three times and I still don't know the difference... one has a girl playing keyboards, the other has a guy who looks like a girl playing keyboards? I know there are more bands like them that I have seen, but I really couldn't tell the difference.

The worst show I've ever attended was a couple of years back when the girlfriend and I played chaperone for her then 16 year old sister and her emo (excuse me..."scene") friends at a Kill Hannah concert. If you've never heard Kill Hannah, imagine an extremely watered-down version of a Smashing Pumpkins ballad (y'know...the shitty kind from Machina or something) mixed with that horrible "I love The Cure but I think that they had dance beats in every song and also I have Down syndrome" variant of dance-punk revival that was really hip a few years ago. The band members were all wearing skinny jeans and had haircuts that looked like the bastard offspring of Flock of Seagulls and some emo kid with bangs, despite all of them looking to be in their late 30's. The emo kids went absolutely NUTS over that band. We had to stick around for like an hour and a half after the show ended because the emo kid that the girlfriend's sister had a crush on was waiting in this massive line to get his picture taken with this pathetic man-child.

I saw KH play a show in a warehouse (called the Empress Ballroom) about 10 years ago, all of the electronics/samples were inaudible and they sounded like a New Wave band with a bit of grunge. They played with some other weird bands, I think Candiria was one, and a Cynic clone playing jazz/death fusion.

Pop singers play with musicians live? I thought it was just the singer and a few dancers singing/dancing to a recorded track.

Some tend to use live musicians. I know that Justin Timberlake uses Greg Howe as a touring/recording guitarist.

That dude's actually insane, too.

I went to a show about a year ago to review it for the webzine I write for. The bill was Attack Attack, William Control, Black Tide, and Escape The Fate. 3-4 hours of brutal torture I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. Attack Attack were so ridiculous, with their synchronized running in place moves and blatantly auto-tuned clean vocals. William Control, I don't even know where to begin; two dudes, singer and bass player, with a fuckton of pretaped backing tracks. Emo girls screaming everywhere. Black Tide? Generic. I bailed a third of the way through Escape The Fate, cause they were vomit inducing.

You may ask yourself, "Dan, why would you go to this show under your own power?". Well, I was guest listed, so it didn't cost me anything. I used it as an excuse to spend a day in NYC-without my wife-and hit up Generation Records, among many other fine music, food, and pornographic establishments. Making the best of a bad situation, indeed.

Back in 07 the wife drug me to go see John Mayor had to sit nearly a mile from the stage. Honestly who sits during a show?

Worst metal show was Norma Jean, I hope they die... Between the Buried and Me was worth it though...

The second concert I ever went to.
The Devil Wears Prada was the headliners. Don't care much for them, but the girl I like invited me, so...

She loved it. I hated it. Just a bunch of crappy hardcore bands.

gig was actually pretty good, but when i saw posthum, dark fortress, shining and satyricon, during shinings set (they were fucking shit, awful band) some knob knocks into me, my glasses go flying off and I cannot see any of satyricons set, the whole things a blur.

Then about halfway into the set i started getting a headache, by the last coupke of songs it was a full blown migraine, and i was just waqiting for the set to end regardless of a great performance.

Within Temptation, they happened to be playing at a festival I was at with some chick and of course she had to drag me into the audience, and quite near the front row too. Being surrounded by a sea of barely pubescent girls trying their hardest to mimic headbanging and giggling and taking pictures of eachother with their cameraphones is far less arousing than one might expect.

The set was all playback, and it's funny how blatant and unashamed the band was about it. I suppose they can't see their core audience noticing, or caring, about that.

I once went to a festival where 15 bands played after each other on one stage, so obviously during building the stage there had to be some music played. 1 fucking CD they had, and it was slipknot - slipknot. It was around 2001 when they were pretty popular, but it was a real metal-festival with only heavy/power/black/death/trash, so 10.000 people were annoyed big time every 20 minutes after a show.

A couple possibilities for me.

1. Type O Negative back around 1996 or so. I guess the soundman was angry or incompetent, but it was the worst possible sound for a headlining act I can imagine. You could just barely hear the bass and the drums...the rest was a sea of noise. Couldn't tell one song apart from another. I couldn't listen to the band for years after that show.

2. The Gathering not showing up to a gig in Ft. Collins Colorado back in 1999. I drove five hours for it. Oh sure, they pulled up in front of the club and then drove off without informing anyone that they were not going to play, so we stood around till 1 am wondering what the hell was going on. Such a disappointment.

3. A friend got free tickets to a show and failed to mention the headliner was Limp Bizkit. 'nuff said. On the plus side, Clutch opened and I've always enjoyed their show.

lol thats horrible,i remember going to a concert(several) where they played whatever is popular on the radio...as if waiting for a band you really want to see live isnt painful enough so they have to play radio music

Wow really? I would never have guessed. Greg Howe is awesome.

I haven't had to many bad concert experiences, but one of the more annoying ones was Vader in December (as someone else mentioned) because there were so many weak openers. Rose Funeral especially overstayed their welcome. That is, they were shooting a live video and there were only about 6 or 7 people into the band. Everyone else was there for Vader and stood towards the back looking annoyed, though some guys kept their spots at the front but chose to simply turn around for the entire set. They got little to no applause after every song. Whenever the vocalist tried to talk to the crowd there was awkward silence or an insult shouted at him. Anyway, it was horrible to sit through but also hilarious. Not to mention some hardcore dancer pissed off some metalheads and they started to fight (both were big guys), resulting in the hardcore dude getting thrown out. Justice!

Then Decrepit Birth and Vader played great sets, but there were some problems with the monitors during Vader, and you could tell Peter was getting pissed. It was all worth it though.

Ok well, the two worst bands live for me were Converge and Rose Funeral. Converge were after High on Fire and before Mastodon, I was front row and literally turned my back to the stage for their whole set. They were awful. And I think anyone who saw Vader on the most recent North American tour knows about the infamous Rose Funeral.

They dropped off the tour by the time it came to Denver, so I guess I got lucky and didn't have to witness them.

They certainly weren't with them when they came to Canada, for which I'm grateful.

Sonic Syndicate or Blackguard. I also really hated Job For A Cowboy but that's probably mostly just because I hate their music.

Orphaned Land at ProgPower last year were terrible. Easily the worst band I've seen in concert, but as a whole, Day 2 was good.

Brutal Truth show last April. The show from the start was a complete fucking mess. Opener was some shitty Slipknot rip-off from Buffalo, NY called Safety Off. Just reeked of nu-metal, they even had this disgusting Gothic chick singing. Complete shit. After that was an even worse band, a Hatebreed rip-off from Buffalo (whats up with these bands coming from Buffalo?) called 3 Minutes of Hate. Possibly the worst band I've ever seen live. The singer was a drunken mess and was berating the crowd the whole time. Completely pathetic.

I saw Brutal Truth a few years ago in NY and there was a terrible, shitty opener called The Communion. Two of the dudes in the band had Whitehouse and Merzbow shirts on, and I love harsh, noisy shit, so I was excited. Just super bland thrashy death metal with super stale riffs.

Luckily, I got high with Rich Hoak and Malignancy, Devourment and Macabre were the other openers. Fuck yeah!

I saw Kataklysm open for Napalm Death last year. I can't stand this band. One of the two times of seeing hundreds of shows in my life that I walked to the back of the venue, trying to get as far away from the band as possible. And I like Death Metal.

The only other time I walked to the back of the venue and completely ignored an opener was when I saw a band called Death By Stereo open for Mastodon. Horrible shitty pop-punk with a lead singer who jumped around like an idiot and had such profound between-song banter as "Don't let me tell you what to do, don't let MTV tell you what to do, this songs called Goddamn Awful Shitty Song, LETS GO!!" while absolutely NO ONE is getting into it.

Suicide Silence and Black Dahlia Murder opening for Carcass was painful. Carcass was one of the best lives sets I've ever seen, hands down. Suicide Silence was one of the worst. Nothing but Chun-Chun haircut bullshit. Makes me jealous of the other people who got 1349 and Suffocation as openers for the earlier dates.

I try to block the really bad shows out of my head. A lot of those are ones I've played. I think I've done a good job forgetting they ever happened.

I saw that tour with Suffocation and 1349 opening for Carcass, most brutal show of my life, and my first death metal concert. Necrophagist and Dying Fetus did kickass sets too, my friend got punched out the second Dying Fetus started playing and made me leave before I got to see Carcass play Heartwork, which I still haven't forgiven him for (though he did pay for the concert XD).

That show also featured the second worst band I've ever seen live, Veil of Maya, they were absolute shit, just a bunch of EMO posers trying to be br00tal, gallons of cunt exploded from the speakers.

The worst concert I've ever been to was with a friend's band. His band, which is broken up now, was playing a charity concert in my hometown so I decided to go and support some true metal. Turns out every other band there was a Rage Against the Machine clone or an EMO band. They gagged on piles of shit the entire show, but at least my friend's band kicked some ass and really closed the show out right.

My Worst Concert was the Mayhem Fest Last Year Featuring Marilyn Manson, Slayer, Killswitch Engage, Cannibal Corpse, and The rest were Crappy Metal-core bands. The Concert was Filled Emo's, Fat Goths, Rednecks, And Only a Handful of Metalheads(Me Being one Of Them)Were There. The Reason why its one of the Worst was because Marilyn Manson was headlining Which it Should've Been Slayer, While Cannibal Corpse pulled an Amazing Set as Did Killswitch(And i dont care for them much) and So Did Slayer but when Slayer Finished Their Set, many People Left the Concert but i stayed for Manson(for only 20 minutes), After Twiggy Played the Worst Guitar Solo I ever heard, I decided to Leave.

They dropped off the tour by the time it came to Denver, so I guess I got lucky and didn't have to witness them.

I was there at the Bluebird that night. I was regretting it at first because of all the hate for Warbringer I'd heard before the show (Slayer ripoff, they open for everyone, etc.), but they were probably my favorite band of the night. ESPECIALLY when Mathieu from Augury got on stage and "played" a huge dildo.

I remember that! I went up to the 2nd floor to chill out after The Amenta and ended up watching Warbringer from there. He must've got it from the adult store next door.

Uh... what? This was really your worst concert?

Behemoth, Cannibal Corpse and Slayer all put on an awesome performance IMO. Even the metalcore bands weren't that bad, and it's not like you couldn't just avoid the stages they were playing on. Plus it didn't really matter that Slayer wasn't headlining, they played a full set anyway and it really just meant I didn't have to sit through Manson... Sorry dude, that post just didn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

The worst concert I've ever seen, and I really hate to say this, was Marduk when I saw them back in November. The performance wasn't really that bad, although I'm not really familiar with much of their material so it did sound kind of samey to me.

What sucked was the sound was WAY TOO FUCKING LOUD. Seriously, I know it sounds really stupid to complain about this for a metal concert, but it was seriously the loudest fucking thing I have ever heard. You could hardly differentiate between the instruments at all, it just sound like a giant fucking wall of static pounding on your head. My buddy agreed with me too, our ears were ringing nonstop for two days after that fucking concert. Goddamn, never again. Every time since then I've always brought earplugs, but in the above case I don't even think it would have helped.

Yes, some bands are really idiots when it comes to live production. Job for a Cowboy, for example, are consistently shitty like that; complete noise, no distinction between different instruments just a flat wall of DUNDUNDUN coming at you with intermittent pterodactyl screams overtop. I don't really care about being able to hear the shit they're playing clearly, but since they always open for everyone it has the unfortunate effect of deafening you before the bands you actually want to see take the stage. I remember seeing them (for the second time :ugh:) open for GWAR in December and the contrast between their sounds was incredible; JFAC had their usual flat wall of noise and GWAR came on fifteen minutes later with a brilliantly crisp but still earth-shakingly loud sound.

Hmmm, probably some local deathcore show I went to about 2 years ago. You know it's going to be an awful show when scene kiddies are blasting Emmure outside the venue. The only reason I went was to support my brothers friend. Luckily I spent most of the show outside with my friend, we probably smoked about an 1/8th of ganja that night. Shitty music is much more tolerable when you're blazed out of your mind.

Capitalisation Kicks Ass.

On topic, the worst gig I've ever been to was either my own last one (we were terrible) or Enslaved in London, 2006/7. Was extremely expensive to begin with, terrible support bands, awful meathead crowd, and Enslaved were so dull and slick it was like they were headlining a huge open air festival or something. For a band who sound so authentic on record, their live act is completely contrived.
