The bit 1:10 into Amorphis - Magic And Mayhem sounds like the main riff from Iron Butterfly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.

I swear the intro riff to Kreator's Total Death is the same as Destruction's Mad Butcher except sped up.

Great Japanese thrash Ritual Carnage
debut album title track is "riff off" Forbidden's Through Eyes Of Glass

it sounds like take one great riff from Forbidden and built up a whole song

RC The Highest Law
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YgbUqbJgHk

Forbidden Through Eyes Of Glass
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZc3oN-yoxs

anyway,
Ritual Carnage is still one of the better thrash metal band

The verse riffs of

Slayer's Kill Again
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NX9t4BXUtvI
Razor's High Speed Metal
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGLeSKHDDHk

are quite similar. I don't know if it was a rip off or not but they're too close for comfort.

Just heard it - it's nearly an exact copy. How embarrassing, because "Mountain Song" is fantastic while this one just sounded pathetic.

Nice to see some Jane's Addiction love here.

Now, if you want to see some nice ripoffs, listen to "Possessed by Fire" by Exumer and compare it to "Bonded by Blood". It gets ridiculous sometimes. OK, I guess it's a tribute, but come on.

War's other riff also sounds like it was taken from Bathory's Necromansy, though that kind of sounds like Píseň Pro Satana anyway.

The beginning of Hofffmannn's Helll on the neo-Destruction album also sounds a lot like a clean version of So Close by Alice In Chains, and though I've mentioned it before, Check My Brain also by AiC sounds very much like Dark Night Of The Soul by Mayhem.

Also the first blasting section of In The Shadows by CoB is Transilvanian Hunger note for note.

Sigh, another one of these threads. Just YouTube 'Metal That Sounds Like Other Metal' and watch the series. It is mildly entertaining.

I think Megadeth's 'Tornado of Souls' riff after 2:49 is a little similar to Toxic Holocaust's 'Gravelord' from 1:15 to 1:35...
Am I right?

Anyone who actually composes metal knows that these similarities are almost always unconcious. Sometimes I write a riff and I later realize it's very similar to another one, either one that I'd heard before and had lingering in my subconcious or one that is alike purely by random chance. If it's identical, you should probably scrap it, but if not, go ahead and use it.

Hyades' Pictures of the World (intro) is an obvious rip-off (tribute???) from Artillery's Khomaniac.

So if I understand the logic here it's any midpaced song with a drum intro and a palm muted 16th note riff is a Carcass rip off? I mean, not to defend Trivium or anything, but these have only slight sketches of similarity. Did Carcass invent playing 16th notes at around 120bpm?

I do believe this was an intentional homage. You know, to pay tribute.

Isn't there a band who stole all their music from another band? I can't recall the band name or the band they stole their music from. I think the band played black metal (not sure on that, though).

The band and the band they stole their music from are on the archives (unless they've been deleted since then).

Both being 80's thrash bands from Oakland, I do believe Defiance borrowed the main idea for this riff from Testament.

This is one of the most obvious riff ripoffs to me.

Arch Enemy ripped off Blue Oyster Cult.

The music of the 2 bands is nothing alike.

Not a rip off, since it's a common progression, but the intro to Bosque's Cold January and Primordial's End of all Times are really similar.

yes thats true the 2 bands sound nothing alike being that rivendell is folk/bm and thergothon is funeral doom..but that doesnt change the fact that rivendell is ripping off the EXACT same riff.

You're thinking of Anthrax - Howling Furies.....but if you want to talk similarities, the battletoads opening is more of a direct rip off of AC/DC - Shot down in Flames.

Many of these alleged rip-offs are simply power chord chugging in the same rhythmic pattern. Chugging the lowest possible power chord is quite common in heavier styles of music, and when the rhythm happens to be the same, people claim it's a ripoff. Well, I'm sure everyone agrees that using the same rhythm as some other band in some song is not much of a crime, really, and if the "riff" is little more than one chord chugging (or at least, that is where the similarities end), I don't think it's really a rip-off.

Oh my god lol, F Zero X music ruled the guy behind it must have good taste. Its a shame on GX they went all trancy.

Why haven't they made an F Zero for the Wii, it would be the perfect game with Wii controls.

Metallica famously ripped off several tunes, especially on their early albums.

Seek and Destroy, the opening riff is close to Diamond Heads Dead Reckoning, and the speed up, slow down solo, bar the last part, is entirely ripped off from Princess of the Night by Saxon.

Ride the Lightning's intro is similar to Sucking My Love by Diamond Head, just reversed.

I cant see it myself, but also Whiplash is supposed to be a rip off of Jaguars Stormchild.

I'm sure there are several more Metallica rip offs, these are the obvious that come to mind for me.

The main riff from "The Phantom Opera Ghost" is literally a direct copy of a riff from "Travel in Stygian", only shortened somewhat.
