I'm not sure if this is the appropriate section for this but here goes. Yesterday I decided to check out Blut Aus Nord's latest album. I'm not a black metal fan but that album really appealed to me. So I checked out Deathspell Omega latest as well. Both had a very distinct style I've never heard in black metal before. To me they sound very sophisticated and original.

Is the rest of the French scene like this? Or are there any bands from other scenes who are similar?

I'm a black metal newbie so any recommendations are welcome.

The french black metal scene has alot of variety, if you take a look at bands like Peste Noire who plays very raw black metal with a great use of solos and others band like Alcest/Amesoeurs, who plays a mix of shoegaze/black metal are completely different and unique, indeed. If you think you're enough open minded, than i'd recommend you these bands because not everyone can get into them.

The best stuff I've heard is from Les Légions Noires (Black Legions) in the early 90's. It's well worth tracking down these recordings.

I've been under the impression they are a keyboard-wanking Dimmu Borgir clone. Maybe I've been wrong...

I am not a big BM fan, but one Black Metal band from France that I do enjoy is Seth. Their debut "Les Blessures de l'Ame" is pretty good.

Try the following:

Epheles - Souviens-Toi
http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=1174 (ignore the bad review and try it out for yourself, it's stunning material)

Nehemah - Light of a Dead Star
http://www.metal-archives.com/release.php?id=2574

Elhaz - Malemort
http://www.metal-archives.com/release.php?id=131542

Slow black metal with the emphasis on atmosphere created by the prominently present bass guitar.

Deathspell Omega - Inquisitors of Satan
http://www.metal-archives.com/release.php?id=10927

Recent Deathspell Omega does very little for me, but this is some great stuff. A true rifffest!

There are more, but these are already mandatory for supporters of the french scene.

I guess you could try SVEST, people often compare them to DSO though I really don't know why. I guess you could say they both have a obscured, "psychedelic" (I hate using that term) atmosphere, but achieve it in much different ways. Their music is very dissonant and noisy, harsh static is omnipresent, however the riffing is more Norse based, though very atonal. The biggest difference though is that they don't suck like DSO.

If you're into ambient, Pensees Nocturnes' Vacuum is quite chilling.

Very underrated band. 'Des Bibles, Des Hymnes, Des Icônes...' is a pretty spectacular album.

Most scenes tend to have an overriding sound, but it isn't utilised by all bands. I've often thought of DSO as vastly overrated. France does have a very strong scene though - its like Canada in a way. Smaller appeal than places like Germany, but still very strong roots and often overlooked.

It has a nice wide range of bands. From Celtic influenced black metal bands like Aes Dana, to the bone crunching style of bands like Sacrificia Mortuorum on albums like 'Maturum Est'. Very diverse.
