Exclude anything with -core attached to it. Death and Black is what I am looking for.

EDIT: It is purposely vague because I am starting a Fanzine and want a large slew of bands to review that are within my region to bring attention

Goatwhore? You really should clarify a bit more. Your request is much too vague.

Classic Louisiana sludge bands are a good start, they have a very "Southern" sound, and a lot of the members have branched out into black/death metal. I'm sure you have heard of a bunch of these, but look into what the members are doing.

Acid Bath (sludge)
Crowbar (sludge)
Down (sludge)
Eyehategod (sludge/doom)
Goatwhore (black/death)
Soilent Green (death/grind/sludge)

As far as the "Southern US", what do you consider the south? Florida? Arizona? New Mexico? Tennesee? You can generally pick a band from a state and simply click around the archives and find a lot of bands from the same region, and a lot of those associated with established acts are glad to give interviews, and they appreciate quality press attention in the underground.

I will contribute with the state of Florida (I will not mention obvious classic dm bands and will avoid mediocre garbage like Kult ov Azazel, Secrets she Kept or DrySpell):

Cryptic Winds - Storms of the Black Millenium - bm
Byam Klavor - Imperial Moonshadows - symphonic bm
Assück - everything - grind/death
Lunar Reign - everything - technical/experimental bm
Rainfall - everything - minimalistic and atmospheric bm
Sadrith Mora - everything - symphonic bm/dark ambient
Felwinter - epic dm
Nocturnal Eclipse - everything - symph. bm
Septic Tomb - everything - atmospheric death doomgore
Gräuen Pestanz - everything - technical bm/ dark ambient
Burial Horg/AOC - everything - epic bm/ambient
Inferion - later material - bm
Tenebrous - Arias Toward the Black Sun: decent EP - bm
