Yep, that's what I'm looking for. These two bands just have this awesome sound, and create this awesome atmosphere, between the slow thundering riffs and drums, and the soaring vocals. I haven't found much of anything like it. It seems to be either death/doom, or sludgey/stoner stuff, that's not what I'm looking for.

Help.

Hail!

You should look into Isole, Passage and Scald. All pure epic doom metal, no death/doom or sludge/stoner here.

Grand Magus - "Wolf's Return" and "Iron Will"

Trad doom with quite a bit of heavy metal influence

You might be interested in Dantesco, Puerto Rican epic trad doom band with an operatic singer.

aaand Doomsword, though they've also got some heavy metal running in their veins. Best albums are probably "Resound the Horn" and "Let Battle Commence".

Dwell Within's "Monkshood" demo is pretty good too. I second Isole btw. How about Funeral? "From These Wounds" is pretty heavy musically but the vocals are clean and I'd argue it's trad doom.

oh man, can't forget Solstice, great band from the UK. Both of their albums are worth hearing.

If you want Doomsword, also get My Name Will Live On, which is my personal favorite album of theirs.

Try Doomshine. They play Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus worshiping epic doom metal. Not the most original band by any means, but still good enough.

Their name sounds like some sort of slang for drugs.

I think that's the point...

Forsaken from Malta
Veni Domine (early stuff mostly but it's all pretty good)
Holy Martyr
Mirror of Deception
Dawn of Winter
Akilles/Forbidden Dreams (basically the same band)
Well of Souls (Germany)
Lamented Souls
and some of the Dio Sabbath albums fit too IMO

One of my favorite little subgenres

Mentioned already, but can't stress it enough: You need to hear New Dark Age. Blows both Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus (well, aside from the debut) completely away.

I don't know if its epic doom maybe more traditional, but Spiritus Mortis are amazing. I've been getting into them a lot lately.

I loved The Gates of Slumber's "The Conqueror" - the riffs, lyrics, production and artwork combined for my #1 of 2008. Like a cross between Manowar and The Obsessed with a bit of Dio-era Black Sabbath.

Most of the bands I would have recommended have already been in this thread, so:
- Ereb Altor's 'By Honour'. Quite a bit of epic Bathory influence here along with Candlemass, it's slow, solid, and epic doom metal.
- Forsaken's 'Dominaeon'. Some great songs, such as the title track, 'Obsidian Dreams', 'Kenosis', 'Resurgam', and the rest is still at a high level. Some great riffs, and an epic atmosphere. Also, I just realized that they were already mentioned once.
- Sahg. Something of a Sabbath-influenced Candlemass, and a pretty interesting band. Check out their first album.

You all forget the best band. Warchetype from Spain. Their Goat Goddess Supremacy is epic as fuck doom. It's the best.

If anyone still cares, I found a list of maybe 30 bands here:
http://www.doom-metal.com/bandlist.php?g=2

I'm familiar with a handful, and intend to get familiar with some more on there.

Also, Scald fucking rocks, thanks for whoever recommended them :D

Another great epic doom band is Thunderbolt (Italy). They are particularly similar to Candlemass' uber-heavy and guitar driven style of doom metal and their entire discography is very worthwhile.

Fall of the Idols may fit the bill. Traditional Doom, but still quite gloomy. Massively heavy thanks to the use of three guitarists

Fall of the Idols is the best "new" doom metal band. They are incredibly heavy and bleak. Especially The Séance contained not one moment of relief, totally uncompromising and gloomy all the way. They beat Reverend Bizarre at their own game. I don't find them to be that epic, though. They have some moments, but it's fairly standard traditional doom but executed almost perfectly.

To the OP: Pale Divine should work. It's not that it's musically the most epic heavy metal around, it's again your typical traditional plodding doom, but their songs are some of the best singalong tunes you'll find in this particular style. I haven't looked into their lyrics, but it's possible that they have some christian themed songs and lyrics, so watch out when singing those aloud. Satan would disapprove.

Just use the advanced search function. There aren't a whole hell of a lot, thankfully.

Argus recently released their full length and it's great epic doom metal with very driving riffs, harmonies and great vocals( vocalist of Penance).
