I'm looking for blackened doom? I'm not sure if that's the right word for it...

I'm not really keen at all on clean vocals and I really like black metal style vocals, especially tortured/insane sounding screams/vocals (bethlehem etc) so that would be a plus.

Any recommendations for me? Cheers..

Woods of Belial are good if you're looking for the "torture" stuff, they're industrial black/doom.
There is Funeralium who also have those Bethlehem-like vocals.

Otherwise, check out Dolorian, Deinonychus, Forgotten Tomb, Void of Silence (first album is more like "haunting", while the last one is more epic and sad sounding overall) and Forest of Shadows if you like Katatonia.

Faustcoven! Traditional/true doom riffing with black metal aggression, vocals, production, and tongue-in-cheek lyrics.

Velnias are generally well thought of. Their debut is well worth a look.

I'd also recommend the lesser known Leech. Although I do feel Mania are a much better band (associated band with several of the same musicians), but they do play a different style of music, so comparisons are limited. Actually check Mania out too (you can find a link on the Leech page, of course).

Technically speaking, Fleshpress could be considered blackened doom, though they do incorporate many other genres. Still, worth a listen.

Black Bile are decent, though very obscure and difficult to get a hold of. Check out Nokturn's review, it seems to hit the nail on the head.

To me, Schmerz sound like blackened doom, mixed in with a touch of DSBM. Its far better than a number of its fellow bands within the depressive sub-genre. Sounds like a mixture of black metal and Nortt, or Elysian Blaze, both of whom are also worth checking out - particularly Elysian Blaze's epic 'Levitating the Carnal'.

Another obscure band this time - Woebegone Obscured (a band with an apt name). Their debut is brilliant, but unfortunately relatively unknown. Highly recommended as it also mixes a death metal tinge into the fray, reminding me slightly of Disembowelment, the Australian legendary band.

Beatrik are an absolute MUST. 'Requiem of December' is practically perfect in every way.

Vhernen are the opposite of clichéd black/doom. Just look at the instruments the bands only member uses!

Have heard a couple of bands because I like some DSBM.

I have a small tape recording. Read this for further details on my project.

But I really advise getting Forgotten Tomb, especially Love's Burial Ground.

I second the recommendation of Misery's Omen. Especially because their bassist is really good, which is something rare among both the black and doom genres.

Doom has some of the best bassists I've heard.

Conjuration (of Finland) is what you need. it's REAL blackened doom metal. Not "black/doom metal" like Faustcoven or "black metal with doom elements" like Samael (well, around the time of their first full length, anyway). It's just straight up, oldschool (mid 80's) style doom metal with some touches of black metal here and there. The vox are just stellar.

Forgotten Tomb Love's Burial Ground should be all you need.

Highgate might be up your alley. Heavy pounding and super repetitive but they get the job done.

As far as I'm concerned the best of the "modern" black/doom bands (i.e, those that do a funeral doom/black metal crossover thing) is Funeral Mourning, their full length is absolutely amazing.

As for Misery's Omen, as one might be able to tell from my review of Hope Dies, I'm a fan.

Beatrik's ''Requiem of December''. The vocals aren't typical black metal ones, but they're still very emotional, more lower pitched, also quite understandable.

A hybrid of black and doom/sludge, it's Bill from Indian and Drew and Charlie from Avichi. Not pure black/doom like Nortt and the rest, but still a great record you might dig.
