Hey guys, I'm looking for melodic black AND blackened death metal bands without satanic/occult/demon worshiping type lyrics. I love the black metal style and the sound but not into all of that satanic/devilish stuff. Bands that sound like true melodic and blackened death w/o those type lyrics would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You might want to check out Blinded By Faith's debut album, Under and Occult Sun. It mostly deals with history, some politics and secret societies.

You would really really like Dissection's last album, Reinkaos. It is super satanic, but if you can ignore the lyrics you will love the music.

I like the idea of ignoring the entire point of his thread, and then suggesting a bands worst album.

Anyways, I haven't paid that much attention to their lyrics but I have to assume that if out and out satanism was involved it would be listed in the lyrical themes. Since it isn't, check out Sacramentum. They play some pretty convincing melodic black metal, obviously huge fans of Dissection.

Check out Borknagar's later works, especially "Quintessence", "Epic", and "The Olden Domain."

I know, but he'd really like them. That's far from their worst album, if he's looking for melodic or blackened death metal.

Well Reinkaos certainly has its good songs but both The Somberlain and Storm of the Light's Bane blow it clear out of the water.

But the OP clearly states he does not want any satanism in his music.

Ok. I was wrong. Hey, OP, go for Kalmah. Melodic black/death metal.

There's a christian black metal scene with bands such as:
Crimson Moonlight, Antestor, Admonish,Slechtvalk,Horde

If this is not what your looking for, I believe summoning has tolkien themes and Mictlantecuhtli has songs about aztec mythology.

Sworn (Arm). Check out their album "Twilight", which is up for free download on their website. (Band sanctioned.) They're my favorite melodic black metal band.

Lifelover
Very good and melodic band, dealing with death and suicide in some kind of dark-humoristic way.
Check their website if you like the song, they have several songs for free download.
But only watch live pictures, if you have a strong stomach

Nagelfar (Ger)
As far as I know, most their lyrics basically are fiction. I only have the "Srontgorrth" album and it tells some kind of fictious story. One of the best BM releases ever, sadly they split up.

Geist
Although they sometimes "borrow" melodies from old Amiga games ;) they still are a very good band. Their newest album seems to be a "nautical" concept album - I haven't heard the whole thing yet, but I can't remember any "satanic" passages.

EDIT:
HOW could I forget!!!

Transilvanian Beat Club
This is the definition of Black'n Roll. See the title of the song, this is what they're all about.

Behemoth is more mythological than anti-christianity. You could try Demigod?

No, but they play melodic death metal, and you can't doubt the black metal influences, Sir.

Order of Ennead is an awesome death/black metal band that I highly recommend. Yeah, Deicide's drummer founded the band and all, but there is no outright satanism in the lyrics. Trust me, I don't like satanic crap either.

Well, Wintersun sure have some (melodic) black metal influences.. The vocals are black metal-ish enough. Definitely not death growls.!
Most riffs and tremolo picked melodies are also black metal influenced. The song Beautiful Death is pure melodic black metal for Lemmy's shake. Anyway, I think the album is closer to Dissection's The Somberlain, rather than At the Gates's The Red in the Sky Is Ours.

Vinterland is a pretty good melodic black metal band from Sweden, Welcome My Last Chapter kicks ass. Also, Sycronomica from Germany is another good band. Paths and Gate are rather epic. Another good band is Meza Virs, although they aren't pure black metal, they are also death and gothic metal. I have their album Vida Sacrificium Meum Est, great stuff right there.

On the other hand, if you are looking for Christian black metal, then for the melodic bands I can recommend Slechtvalk (Falconry is a great album), Crimson Moonlight (Check out the Eternal Emperor EP), Frost Like Ashes and Renascent (Through Darkness is excellent). If melodic death interests you, check out Hilastherion (Taken from Darkness has excellent solos, great for COB and Norther fans) and Immortal Souls.

I'm not really a fan of melodic death/black metal, but I recently purchased a couple of albums by Agmen. I'd definitely recommend them to people who like this genre. Probably satanic, but it's all in Czech, so I haven't a clue what they're going on about. All I know is that the album Damnation has a picture on the liner notes of a dude fucking a goat.

V:28. Atmospheric black/death with nuclear war and the like for lyrics.

Yes, I can actually. Wintersun is epic melodic death metal. There is a minimal amount of black metal influence, but not enough to call them black metal.

Rites of Thy Degringolade

I actually have no idea what their lyrics are like, but they're fuckin' fantastic and their song titles indicate more spiritualism, drug use and mental instability than anything else.
